    Gathering Amidst The Ruins

Transcript via https://casco.art/resource/gathering-amidst-the-ruins-on-the-potential-of-assembly-within-the-context-of-art-institutions/ - Casco Art Institute and Club Solo proudly present Gathering amidst the ruins: on the potential of assembly within the context of art institutions. We are happy to welcome you to join this reflection and share knowledge together! Which forms of coming together lead to an open and layered decision-making process? What happens if you choose other formats? What significance does an assembly bear, or how relevant is it for art practices today and in the future, especially if the present time might be best seen from an angle of the capitalist, patriarchal, colonial ruins? During this event organized in collaboration with Club Solo: Symposium on tour we will reflect on these questions and actively engage with criticality shaped by artistic practices that are on the cutting edge of social practice and engagement. https://casco.art/activity/gathering-amidst-the-ruins-on-the-potential-of-assembly-within-the-context-of-art-institutions/

Collective harvesting facilitated by the organizational team and closing

Collective harvesting facilitated by the organizational team and closing -- On 11 and 12 December 2020 Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons organized the third Assembly for commoning art institutions entitled "We Owe Each Other Everything." Following Casco’s two earlier Assembly editions in 2018 and 2019, "We Owe Each Other Everything" addressed various forms of collective art practice and the question of their resilience, with contributions by groups from across the world, including Utrecht, Singapore, London, Warsaw, Kampala, and Medellín. These twenty-odd groups form a part of the Casco Art Institute ecosystem and go towards shaping Casco’s institutional practices and inquired: When there is never enough time and survival is uncertain, how do collective art practices continue their ways of being together and shape art institutions working for the commons? The third annual Assembly was developed by a steering committee consisting of: artist Annette Krauss, researcher and organizer Ying Que and curator Yolande van der Heide - who co-organized the first and second Assembly in 2018 and 2019 - and Casco Art Institute: Binna Choi with support from Leana Boven and Marianna Takou. Common Air S3E2 @ Stranded FM - 21.01.21

Due to the lockdown, this is a recording from home, featuring a chat with artist and designer Wok the Rock and Casco’s director Binna Choi, and recordings contributed by researcher Nuraini Juliastuti, both from Indonesia. The episode was inspired by Wok the Rock's project Parasite Lottery (2016 in Casco, Utrecht) that was created with an intention to respond to the government's heavy budget cuts in the art and cultural sector. Nuraini Juliastuti’s research endeavors were leading in the direction for this broadcast, grappling with questions around song heritage and caring for an infrastructure of the commons. The red thread of songs for resistance unravels and draws lessons from Indonesia’s social movements, where the act of archiving is presented as a way to dissent from mainstream and dominant narratives in post-colonial Indonesia. This is the second episode as Channel 4 of Common Grounds: Song / Value: Casco’s radio program. Kanitha Tith - How heavy is time? (soundscape, taken from the film)

Chapter 3: How heavy is time? As part of Common Grounds: Story / Heritage 6 March - 11 July 2020 Audio version (soundscape) of original film conceived by Kanitha Tith Camera and sound by Davy Chou This performance took place by the 200-year-old platanus tree in Casco’s shared courtyard in the heart of Utrecht’s museum quarter premieres on Friday, 5 June 2020. Read more via https://casco.art/en/program/chapter3 Watch the film here: https://youtu.be/vs0e05Bc_Tc Kanitha Tith would like to thank Binna Choi, Staci Bu Shea, and Marianna Takou and the rest of the Casco team; Davy Chou; Catalina González; Donghwan Kam; and the band Dengue Fever. Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons https://casco.art/ Speech transcript: ["Uku" by Dengue Fever plays softly in the background.] [Kanitha is kneeling in the courtyard facing the direction of the tree. Kanitha begins speaking and the camera is near her face.] [minute 7.17] I don’t think I am a verbal person but my gesture can show you the gratitude and pay respect to you, because since you have been here and you have seen many things happen, since your existence, and I think the way you are breathing is to share with us, as a kind of thing that walk with two legs, but I don’t think that having movement can bring us further as we thought. The air you absorb, no matter what air it is, I think you always find a way to breathe, in and out, with… with you flexi-[stutter], with your flexibility. Even though I cannot pronounce it well. But I know, your flexibility is always there. And I feel that you always find a way to continue to root here. And now, you are already 150 years old. So, I am really pleased to meet you, in person. And... [places hand over heart] My name is Kanitha. [camera slowly moves back. Kneeling, Kanitha bows in the direction of the tree.] [10.00] -- [rain patters against a plastic raincoat, Kanitha is speaking to the small group around her] [17.12] We witness for what it is now. [17.19] If you have questions you can ask me. [17.33] I think sometimes when I do this, it’s more like, alone by myself. From the beginning I don’t feel it’s a kind of meditation, but then after that I feel like yeah, it’s really meditation but I don’t know because my hand is coiling and then after that, after awhile, my brain is traveling like this [motions a spiral with her finger]. But after a while I enjoy it a lot. Like, ok… What could bring me to this situation? Questioning around what’s happening in the world. Why I exist in this world. Then after that it can be more fun… I like to speak with my cat, and I feel like, am I just pretending that I speak with my cat or what? Something like that. [laughs] Because the cat just keeps looking at you [looks gazingly above and softly blinks] like “ohh." But you know it’s your own projection, right? [laughs] [18.45] [20.44] [thundering clouds and patter of rain on leaves] Isn’t it amazing if you imagine yourself that you are here for a long time, and you keep rooting and growing, but at the same time you feel like, you admit something, how do you say it... you see everything. I feel this is really amazing that I have this time to spend with the tree. I never thought that one day I could do that. Because I feel more like… [trails off] [21.18] [21.27] Can you see something different? Can we listen to something that we never listen to? Can we just take time to look at things we never really pay attention to? Something like that. I try out to see that I never been working outside like this too. So this moment, I bring my sculpture out, my wire out, to see what is happening here, and now I feel that everything is combined. Which means that, I wish so much to have a sunny day. But then there’s wind, there’s rain, there’s you, there’s the tree here, the ground, and everything, it’s combining! [22.25] Sorry, my English is not really good. I would express well in my own language but I would like to share with you also.

[Image description: A warm yellow background with visible brushstrokes, with a small pencil drawn figure with a peaceful looking facial expression and one visible arm wrapped around an oval shape, drawn in black ink which is more saturated at the top than the bottom. This drawing is entitled "Wrapping Your Arms Around the Dark" and is made by artist Jumana Emil Abboud.] The irresistible shade of the vine Performance, fairytale reading & workshop with Jumana Emil Abboud presented in the context of Common Grounds: Story / Heritage, chapter 2: The irresistible shade of the vine Thursday, 30 April 20:00 - 21:00 on Stranded FM De voertaal van dit evenement is Engels, voor informatie in het Nederlands bezoek: https://casco.art/program/chapter2 “In the shade of the grapevine we gathered as children to hear tales of the wonders and wanderings of the young and harmed as they faced their adventures into heroism. The voice of the folktale was like a bird singing us into enchantment and we lived and loved for more.” In this three-segment audio performance, the artist shares with us “a story of directions,” anecdotes from her own childhood when folktales were a common practice, and invites us to participate in the storytelling process. Find a comfortable spot to sit and join Abboud in this tale that leads us to remedies for love and hardships. In the first part, Abboud takes us on a journey through distant and ever-so-close lands and tells a folktale inspired by Palestinian-Arab folklore. In the second segment, she’ll share the story’s background and interpretation in preparation for the workshop prompt to follow in the third part. Then, the artist invites us to imagine our very own story-interaction by making our own response or remedy in relation to the story she told. A prompt with specific instructions or directives will be given, and it will ultimately call on us to shape the “vine” together. Each remedy will be unique, crafted from the same question, yet achieved through various forms and materials. Take a photo of your outcome and tag us on social media or send to [email protected] You can listen and participate anytime, anywhere. For the remedy-making tool kit, here are some of the kinds of materials you may use: a pencil sharpened at both ends a piece of paper any photo-making device (your phone camera or disposable camera etc) liquid pen-correction tool needle and thread scrap of fabric hair pin soap bar sugar glass of water leaf Music used, attached the links so listeners can support the artists: 1. Keynote “Reforming the civil code in the interest of future generations” by Ugo Mattei

On 25 and 26 October 2019 Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons organized the second Assembly for commoning art institutions entitled "Our House is on Fire." The last keynote in the program was given by lawyer, legal scholar, and activist Ugo Mattei, entitled “Reforming the civil code in the interest of future generations.” Following Casco’s inaugural annual Assembly in 2018, "Our House is on Fire" turned our attention to developing a climate justice code for art and art institutions in response to the current climate crisis and the question: What practical measures will art and art institutions take to care for our planetary commons with the power of imagination? The second annual Assembly was developed by a steering committee consisting of: artist Annette Krauss, researcher and organizer Ying Que - who co-organized the inaugural Assembly Elephants in the Room in 2018 - and Casco Art Institute: Binna Choi and Yolande van der Heide with support from Rosa Paardenkooper. The Climate Justice Code editorial committee consisted of: Platform BK: Joram Kraaijeveld; Commons Network: Thomas de Groot, Taru Aitola; Fossil Free Culture: Teresa Borasino, Harriet Bergman; artist Clementine Edwards.
