Stop Trying to Fit In—Start Paying Attention
From identity to boundaries… and everything in between. In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Lindsey shares an honest rant about not quite fitting right now. Whether it’s age, energy, running a business that doesn’t fit the “lifestyle” mould, or being the main earner, she’s asking the question many avoid:Where do you fit… and do you even need to?Paul relates, reflecting on a time when not smoking meant missing out on conversations, decisions, and opportunities—because the real networking happened in the smoking area. He also admits he doesn’t like golf… and would appreciate you keeping that quiet.Together, Lindsey and Paul explore:➡️ What identity really means in business—and how social media shapes it➡️ Comfort zones, and why growth often sits just beyond them➡️ The warning signs that show up when you’ve crossed your own boundaries➡️ Why trying harder to “fit in” usually pulls you further away from yourself➡️ Grounding yourself when things feel uncertain and learning to trust your body’s signals➡️ The power of connection and finding the right rooms, not just more roomsAs they hit episode 60, they also reflect on breaking podcast “rules” and expectations, proving that consistency, honesty, and showing up as you are count for far more than stats.Because sometimes, the moment you stop trying to fit in… is the moment things start to click.➡️ Enjoyed this episode? How do we turn clients into raving fans? From customer to ambassador, and the bit in between
We've all done it, got the client over the line, then, without thinking or intention, don't take good care of them afterwards. It's like we receive the money, breathe a sigh of relief, get cracking with delivery, while jumping back to the beginning to secure another client.A treadmill that can really take the shine off what we do and why.In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Paul and Lindsey discuss the importance of onboarding, delivery, and offboarding. An episode that feels like the final step in the latest episodes, which have focused on the practical steps of business, covering:✅ How we ensure our clients feel/know they are in the right place.✅ The importance of systems, and the part they play✅ The challenge of being stuck in the loop of client acquisition.✅ How we can't afford and shouldn't avoid the human response✅ The 'What can we do for you' lesson from the Portuguese Fish and Chip shop✅ The power of feedback, and the importance of using the lessons within.Lindsey and Paul also talk about how good customer service is not just a nice-to-have, but the key to revenue, business development, and growth. They also mentioned the secret sauce to creating raving fans, and you'll have to watch the episode in full to find out what that is.Another episode providing secret-sauce insights, touches on the importance of processes and how to use feedback received. And why you must never neglect the human side of business, and how by putting relationships first, you can't really go wrong.➡️ Enjoyed this episode? Why Most Small Business Marketing Doesn’t Work
A practical conversation that will make marketing feel simpler.Paul and Lindsey continue their practical discussions, and in this episode of Challenging the Norm, they unpick marketing — a big topic.Following on from recent conversations about pipelines, sales, and analysis paralysis (the mechanisms that move potential clients into your pipeline), this discussion is full of golden nuggets. This episode is particularly for solopreneurs and business owners without a marketing department.Lindsey’s hope for this episode is that by the end, you realise you don’t have to do everything — and can let out a sigh of relief. In this episode, Lindsey and Paul cover:✅ What marketing is, what it isn’t, and how to avoid the traps.✅ The importance of knowing who you want to work with and serve.✅ Why the relevance of your offer is key in marketing.✅ Understanding where your audience is at.✅ Why you should never get fixated on the outcome.✅ The dangers of social media and engaging with the wrong ‘people’.✅ Marketing tools, the pitfalls, and how to avoid them.Paul and Lindsey both agree that marketing — and business — starts with relationships and the experience we provide our clients.Another episode full of real insights for the everyday business owner, and we guarantee you’ll walk away with more than one a-ha moment.➡️ Enjoyed this episode? Sales and Selling: Why This Must Be Your Business Priority Turning conversations into conversions
In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Lindsey takes the lead as she and Paul dive into the heart of business: sales. Lindsey kicks things off bluntly: “If we don’t sell, we don’t have a business.” Paul adds, “If you have a business, you are a salesperson.”Even with a website that sells, the owner still needs to actively talk about their business. Before diving deeper, they tackle common phrases like “I don’t like selling” and why so many business owners avoid it.Here’s what you can expect from this episode:✅ Why women sometimes find selling harder — and how to overcome it.✅ The importance and benefits of a solid sales process.✅ How a CRM can boost conversions and make selling easier.✅ The emotional side of sales and the hidden dangers of discounting.✅ Why strong offers give you confidence in selling.✅ How women thrive in sales once they find their confidence.Paul and Lindsey share practical examples of adding value to your offers, and Paul emphasises — more than once — why sticking to the process is key.Lindsey also reflects on gender bias in business and their shared vision for a more equitable world.➡️ Enjoyed this episode? In the last episode, Paul and Lindsey explored the heart of your business — your pipeline. Now, they take the natural next step: sales. After all, a pipeline only matters if it converts. In this episode, they tackle analysis paralysis—the invisible gap that keeps many business owners from taking action and having those crucial sales conversations. Here’s what you can expect from this episode:✅ Why it’s easy to get lost in research.✅ How “steps to something” can actually be avoidance.✅ The difference between distraction and avoidance.✅ Why doing nothing is still a decision — and the danger of self-negotiation.✅ The importance of having the right people around you.✅ Why you must never remove yourself as the best option.✅ The power of small actions and the impact on your business.Lindsey and Paul also share practical questions to help you stop chasing the nextnew thing or trend. Why Waiting In Business (and Life) is Dangerous: Lessons Hidden in the Latest Budget
In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Lindsey and Paul dive into the 26thNovember budget. Not as economists (because they’re definitely not!) but as two business owners trying to make sense of why “solutions” were kicked into the future. They start with the first and perhaps most significant lesson in the budget: why waiting is dangerous — in life, in business. Whether you’re running a business, leading a team, or navigating everyday life, delaying action can quietly hold you back far more than you realise.Expect laughter, a little disbelief, and, as always, practical insight as Lindsey and Paul explore:✅ Why waiting rarely solves anything — in business or in life✅ Paul’s “failure loop” and how it shows up in everyday decisions✅ Mindset, resilience, and how to shift perspective when you’re stuck✅ The role of media and why filtering the noise is essential✅ The importance of staying in your lane, even when everything around you feels chaoticAnd in true one-take style, Lindsey does disappear for a moment to answer the door — because real life doesn’t stop just because you’re recording a podcast. Lindsey's disappearance aside, this is a look at the budget from a different perspective, without the scare, and instead two ‘normal’ people staying in their lane.If you enjoy honest conversations, real business talk, and the occasional giggle, subscribe, comment, and share with fellow entrepreneurs navigating the noise.CONNECT WITH US:Paul: Uses the latest in neuroscience to help business leaders unlock success through a people-first lens. https://www.dnaneuroanalytics.com/Paul - https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulksnell/Lindsey: Helps ambitious entrepreneurs create financial abundance and a time-rich lifestyle without sacrificing their joy. https://lindseyburden.com/Lindsey - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lindsey-burden/ABOUT THE PODCASTChallenging the Norm: His and Hers Look at Life and Business is the podcastfor solopreneurs, entrepreneurs, and business owners who want to achieve successon their terms. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by information overload, losing sight of your priorities,or constantly chasing the next trend, this show is for you. With over 50 years (and some) of combined experience, Lindsey and Paul bring realtalk, practical wisdom, and fresh perspectives to help you cut through the noise andbuild a business that works for you.______________________________#business #businessdevelopment #success #growth #motivation #inspiration#leadyourbusiness # #personaldeveloment #entrepreneurlife #businesscoach#businesscoaching #successonyourterms #successyourways #successwithouthustle#businesslifebalance #realbusinesstalk #Budget2025 #ChallengingTheNorm

Planning vs. Winging It: The Great Business Debate
Finally, a topic where Paul and Lindsey are poles apart. In this episode, Paul admits he doesn’t always get around to this ‘stuff’... stuff being planning. He is honest and holds his hands up.Lindsey, on the other hand, has become more organised over the years. Is that because she is a woman with two teenagers and has built a business around the family? Or did she realise the power of planning in the nick of time.By moving away from an ad-hoc, hope-for-the-best approach, Lindsey has more time to spend away from the business. Perhaps more importantly, she now makes progress. This episode is a juicy one.Although, while listening back and writing these show notes, Lindsey thinks she sounds like she was in the toilet… which we promise she wasn’t. But perhaps she didn’t turn her Snowball on! Rookie error!! 😆.Anyway, here’s what you can expect:✅ The challenges facing business owners who love the “business stuff” but sometimes struggle to get organised.✅ Finding your tipping point for outsourcing and why not doing so could hold your business back.✅ How mindset and spotting gaps in your processes can move your business forward.✅ Lindsey’s excitement for planning — yes, you’ll hear her geek out!✅ Paul shares his approach to reframing and using 90-day plans to stay on track.✅ Meaning that Lindsey and Paul, of course, dive into why 90-day planning works and how it can help you make better business decisions. Finally, touching on the risks every solopreneur or business owner faces if planning is neglected — and how thinking ahead protects your business. If you’re ready to bring structure, clarity, and momentum into your business, you can book a Discovery Call with Lindsey using the link below:https://bookme.name/lindseybrownburden/lite/discovery-callPlease subscribe, comment and share with fellow entrepreneurs navigating the noise of business advice.CONNECT WITH US:🔗 Paul: Uses the latest in neuroscience to help business leaders unlock success through a people-first lens. 🌐 https://www.dnaneuroanalytics.com/Paul - https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulksnell/💫 Lindsey: Helps ambitious entrepreneurs create financial abundance and a time-rich lifestyle without sacrificing their joy. 🌐 https://lindseyburden.com/Lindsey - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lindsey-burden/ABOUT THE PODCASTChallenging the Norm: His and Hers Look at Life and Business is the podcast for solopreneurs, entrepreneurs, and business owners who want to achieve success on their terms. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by information overload, losing sight of your priorities, or constantly chasing the next trend, this show is for you. With over 50 years (and some) of combined experience, Lindsey and Paul bring real talk, practical wisdom, and fresh perspectives to help you cut through the noise and build a business that works for you.______________________________#business #businessdevelopment #success #growth #motivation #inspiration #leadyourbusiness # #personaldeveloment #entrepreneurlife #businesscoach #businesscoaching #successonyourterms #successyourways #successwithouthustle #businesslifebalance #realbusinesstalk #OnlineBusinessSupport #podcast #ChallengingTheNorm

Hiding in plain sight
In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Paul and Lindsey talk about what it really means to stop hiding in plain sight. From building genuine relationships to creating momentum, they share what actually works.Usually, Lindsey is the one on the soapbox — but this time, it’s Paul. After racking up 25,000 impressions on a joke, 400,000 on a bagel shop post, and a measly 150 on a value post, Paul is questioning whether visibility on LinkedIn is really worth it. Add in a sea of copy-and-paste DMs (with only 1 in 20 worth his time), and his frustration is something we can all relate to.But here’s the thing: this isn’t about algorithms or even LinkedIn. Perception is everything and that can be the problem.
In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Lindsey is on a soapbox, and for good reason! Together, she and Paul explore how our perceptions shape how we respond, the actions we take, and, ultimately, the results we see in both life and business. It starts with a story from Lindsey’s holiday and ends with practical, thought-provoking business advice. Along the way, you’ll pick up lessons about choice, perspective, and how the stories we tell ourselves can either hold us back or move us forward. What to expect:✅ The role of feelings and why we often search for answers that validate them✅ How our perspective creates self-fulfilling prophecies in life and business✅ Why abdicating results or validation keeps us stuck✅ The difference between genuine positivity and toxic positivity✅ Practical ways to stay motivated and on track without losing yourselfAs Paul wisely puts it: “We choose the truth that fits our story.”This conversation will help you choose a story that leads to better outcomes, more aligned decisions, and a healthier approach to success. Please subscribe, comment and share with fellow entrepreneurs navigating the noise of business advice.CONNECT WITH US:🔗 Paul: Uses the latest in neuroscience to help business leaders unlock success through a people-first lens. With over 50 years (and some) of combined experience, Lindsey and Paul bring real talk, practical wisdom, and fresh perspectives to help you cut through the noise and build a business that works for you.______________________________ #business #businessdevelopment #success #growth #motivation #inspiration #leadyourbusiness # #personaldeveloment #entrepreneurlife #businesscoach #businesscoaching #successonyourterms #successyourways #successwithouthustle #businesslifebalance #realbusinesstalk #OnlineBusinessSupport #podcast #ChallengingTheNorm

Is Lindsey going to be replaced by an AI coach?
Let’s hope not… but with the rapid rise of AI tools, it’s a question worth asking. Whether you realise it or not, AI is already a part of your daily business life — from note-taking apps to platforms like ChatGPT and Claude, we’re all interacting with artificial intelligence in some way. In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Paul and Lindsey dive into the big question: Could an AI Coach ever truly replace a human one like Lindsey? More importantly, explore how embracing AI (rather than fearing it) can enhance what we offer as business owners, rather than detracting from it. From content creation to nuance, facial expressions to tone of voice — Lindsey and Paul aren’t convinced AI can replicate the depth of human connection needed for coaching. But acknowledge that for some, it might seem like a more ‘cost-effective’ option. Lindsey and Paul also discuss the ethical concerns around AI in coaching and the scaremongering that impacts public perceptions of AI. An honest, thought-provoking conversation, with, of course, a sprinkling of humour — and a bit of a throwback to our early podcast chats about AI! And you might be surprised where the conversation goes, so make sure you listen to the end. There's an undercurrent, are you feeling it?
How to Keep Going in Business When It Feels Chaotic In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Paul shares that he is sensing a subtle undercurrent. Lindsey says it's more like full-blown chaos and kicks off the episode with an honest (and slightly angry) rant. While Lindsey zooms out to global events, Paul brings it closer to home — focusing on what's really going on in the business world. The shifts. The ripples. The impact. Not here to add to the doom and gloom. Lindsey and Paul have weathered a recession or two and a pandemic, and know that while it isn't the end, things feel wobbly for some right now. 2024 was tough. Many used it to build stronger foundations, but now, in 2025, even those who emerged resilient still feel tested. What to expect: ✅ Why more discerning customers are actually good for your business✅ How constraints can drive creativity and higher standards✅ The danger of coasting when things are "good"✅ Why discounting is rarely the answer✅ The hidden role of energy behind every sale These times will pass. But don't wait for the perfect moment — or let someone else's narrative derail your path. On this occasion, Lindsey wraps it all up with some grounded advice on how to ride this wave — and the next one. Where's my 'me time' gone?
In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Lindsey and Paul are diving into the elusive concept of ‘me time’.Not the hours spent on your business or in your job — but time that’s truly just for you. Personal, pressure-free moments that exist outside the constant drive to cram more in on the road to success. But here’s the challenge…· Where does that time come from when we’re all so busy?· How much of our ‘me time’ is shaped by what we think it should look like, thanks to social pressure or curated Instagram routines?· And is work/life balance even real… or just another unrealistic expectation?Lindsey and Paul unpack what ‘me time’ really means, and how to find it amidst the chaos of running a business and managing life. Expect a refreshingly honest conversation, plus some reassuring advice on carving out the kind of me time that works for you, not what others think it should be.They explore:· The pressure to do ‘me time’ the way everyone says you should· The ongoing juggle of work/life balance· Why it’s essential to define your own version of downtime· And how, for some of us, the business is our place of peacePlus, they share a few personal favourites: Lindsey finds cleaning the house surprisingly therapeutic, while Paul’s is all about time in the kitchen. Please subscribe, comment and share with fellow entrepreneurs navigating the noise of business advice.CONNECT WITH US:🔗 Paul: Uses the latest in neuroscience to help business leaders unlock success through a people-first lens. With over 50 years (and some) of combined experience, Lindsey and Paul bring real talk, practical wisdom, and fresh perspectives to help you cut through the noise and build a business that works for you.______________________________ #business #businessdevelopment #success #growth #motivation #inspiration #leadyourbusiness # #personaldeveloment #entrepreneurlife #businesscoach #businesscoaching #successonyourterms #successyourways #successwithouthustle #businesslifebalance #realbusinesstalk #OnlineBusinessSupport #podcast #ChallengingTheNorm #businesslifebalance #realbusinesstalk #podcast

It's not for everyone
In this episode of Challenging the Norm, Lindsey and Paul get real and talk openly about the reality of building a business — and how it might not be the right path for everyone. And guess what? That’s completely OK. There’s a common perception that running your own business means full flexibility, easy money, and more time to do what you love. But the truth? It’s not that simple. While entrepreneurship can be incredibly fulfilling, it’s rarely easy. There’s no magic 10-step formula to becoming a millionaire by a week last Thursday. We all have different hours to give, different goals, and different definitions of success. Many of us start businesses for more freedom — to be there for the school run, to do more of what lights us up. And even with solid foundations and doing “all the right things,” you might not hit the income you hoped for straight away. In this episode, Lindsey and Paul explore:Why business isn’t for everyone — and that’s not a failure. How social media influences our view of being employed. Why chasing money alone isn’t the answer. Why your business is just that — a business — and family comes first. How your life is yours to shape — and it’s OK to change your mind. Paul and Lindsey have loved —and do love —their entrepreneurial journey, but in this episode, they encourage you to think deeply about what truly matters to you before taking the leap. Staying in your lane
As your business grows, how do you stay focused on your own path—especially in a world filled with noise, fear, and negativity? In this episode of Challenging the Norm: His and Hers Look at Life and Business, Lindsey and Paul try to answer the question How do you stay in your lane when starting a business?Which requires you to know what your lane looks like in the first place.Paul kicks off with a chat about instant gratification—how the "10 steps to success in 90 days" messages from influencers can lead us astray. (He even mentions his dream of owning a tearoom to make his point!)They go on to explore:Why success doesn't have to mean six figuresHow to define success in your terms (hint: it’s not always about money)Understanding the pace at which you can realistically achieve successThe importance of knowing your available resources, especially timeWhy having everything at your fingertips can lead to burnout and overwhelmToward the end, Lindsey and Paul discuss resilience—a huge topic in itself—and the issue of perspective. Why is it women are more willing to do additional learning and training than men?
All the research shows that women are more willing to undergo more training and learning than men in similar situations. We wrestle with why that might be the case and why it's so important to understand the mindset behind that behaviour.Paul talks about biases around this behaviour and how it can drive women to feel they need to continuously prove themselves against men. Whats so important about the New Year anyway
The first episode of 2025! Why do we use the New Year as a time to put the plans into action? We chat about where procrastination comes in when we choose a date in the future (Jan 1st is the most common point for this). We look at the discipline we need to get the planning done by a particular date. Paul talks about how planning can be maintained by using the trigger reward loop to keep on top of it. We break it down to make the commitment to hitting the key date you have set yourself. Overcommitting is one of the greatest risks in plan execution. Grab a cuppa and have a listen. It's the end-of-the-year episode. As business owners, planning should be second nature. Fail to plan is planning to fail as they say. When it comes to planning there is a big question... Knee Jerk, is that the right approach?
Lindsey has a bee in her bonnet! ( just don't mention the budget 😁). Knee-jerk decisions seem to be everywhere and we have decided its time to look at knee-jerk as a strategy...or not. - Do knee-jerk decisions have a place in business? - Are panic moments a driver for poor business decisions? - Knee-jerk is driven largely by how people feel, not always what they think, can that be a good thing? - The role social media has in driving knee-jerk reactions A very direct episode that deals with the tricky subject of making quick, knee-jerk decisions, that really do work for us rather than against us.

Is doing more damaging your reputation?
When things don't go to plan our default can be to simply do more... - more marketing - more admin - more qualifications The list goes on... Eventually, it starts to feel like it's from a place of desperation. One critical area of this is the dreaded ... lowering your prices to get more sales. We talk about why this isn't the best plan when it comes to building income.... not by a long shot! We explore this idea of doing more and expect that to solve our immediate problems. This is an area close to mine and Lindsey's heart as we see too many business owners falling into this rabbit warren and we want that to stop. Is it easier for men to be visible in business than women?
Lindsey kicks this one off with frustration over how easy it is for men to simply rock up in business having made minimal effort to look the part whereas women have a whole different challenge. Paul had a very different take on this! This one got interesting. We discuss: - The fears of being visible when it comes to business - What is a successful image in business for a man or a woman? - The impact visibility has on confidence in business - The use of image in business - Do we manipulate with visibility? - Does age matter when it comes to visibility in business?
