Is Austin Really a Blues City?

Decades ago, Stevie Ray Vaughan brought the Texas Blues to town — but since then, Austin has birthed a well-known blues festival and kept the Austin Home of the Blues, Antone’s Nightclub, in business. Executive Producer Eva Ruth Moravec sits down with Austin’s longtime icon, “Soul Man Sam” Evans, to hear about how we got here; and later is joined by relative newcomer D.K. Harrell to talk about the future of blues in Austin. Catch both musicians’ live sets this weekend at the Austin Blues Festival.  Want some more Austin news? Who’s Surveilling Austinites?

Surveillance technology has played a big role in the investigation into the recent West Sixth Street mass shooting, and participants in this year’s SXSW festival certainly understand they are being watched by law enforcement on downtown cameras. But how much surveillance technology is too much? Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Mackenzie Rhine, a digital rights attorney and board member of the Electronic Frontier Foundation Austin, to talk about the Austinites who stopped the city from adding cameras to parks, Austin’s new surveillance technology act, and if cameras can actually stop crime.  Want some more Austin news? ‘Your City Could Be Better’: DC’s Plan To Hold Federal Agents Accountable — Presented By City Cast Austin

Austinites are concerned about police accountability, especially with the increased presence of federal troops in many cities. DC Council in Washington recently passed emergency legislation requiring local police to release body-worn camera footage of incidents involving federal forces they patrol with, and to collect the names of federal officers who make arrests. It’s a big shift in local policy, partially motivated by the fact that local cops have damaged their reputation by patrolling with feds. City Cast Chicago podcast host Jacoby Cochran talks with City Cast DC podcast co-host and executive editor Mike Schaffer about the political stakes involved, the effectiveness of body cameras, and how Washingtonians are dealing with the heavy federal law enforcement presence. Plus, Mike and Jacoby weigh in on public transit etiquette in their cities when it comes to people playing music out loud. Is there something your city is doing that we should be talking about? Your Guide to SXSW 2026

It’s SXSW — and downtown Austin has been transformed like never before, with programming even more spread out than usual due to the lack of a convention center. So, what will SXSW’s 40th year look like? Will running the innovation, music, film and TV, and comedy festivals simultaneously be a chaotic mess?  How can Austinites get involved without breaking the bank? And is SXSW ready for the crowds (they’re expecting about the same as last year, when 200,000 people attended, down from a 2018 peak of 432,500) just weeks after the mass shooting on West Sixth Street? Executive Producer Eva Ruth Moravec sits down with Alex Casolaro, the director of credentialed sales for SXSW; and Wesley Lucas, the director of communications for Visit Austin, to find out. Plus, will SXSW go back to the convention center once the new one is built? Casolaro and Lucas say yes, while another company official hinted otherwise to Texas Monthly.  Want some more Austin news? Should Austin Spend Money to Save Money?

Austin City Council is considering spending money to hire an outside auditor — even though it has an audit office — to identify ways the city could save money. But what are their motivations? Is it to actually prove to the public that they are more fiscally responsible, and regain lost trust? Or, is it to take action before an outside group can gather signatures and force a vote on whether to include a regular audit in the city charter? Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Amy Stansbury, editor-in-chief of The Austin Common, to get the details.  Want some more Austin news? 'Your City Could Be Better': What Austin Needs To Know About Utah's Controversial 'Homeless Campus' Plan

Homelessness is one of the major issues that cities like Austin are trying to solve. The state of Utah is planning to build a 16-acre homeless campus on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, where unhoused people with mental illnesses or addiction issues could be sheltered and in some cases involuntarily committed. This controversial idea is the brainchild of conservative think tanks, and it’s one that’s very much being embraced by the Trump administration and the Utah legislature. City Cast CEO David Plotz talks with City Cast Salt Lake podcast host Ali Vallarta about how this plan is meant to work, the concerns about forced institutionalization, and why the state is pushing for this even though it goes against the recommendations of local experts and service providers. Talarico Wins, Cornyn and Paxton Face Runoff, & More Election News

A change to when votes are counted in Travis County caused results on primary election night to be delayed for hours, leaving several local races uncalled late into Tuesday evening. In the heavily-watched race for the U.S. Senate nomination, State Representative James Talarico beat U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett, and the top Republican vote-getters, incumbent John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton, will face a runoff.  Meanwhile, other polling changes across Texas created confusion and the slowdown of proclaiming a winner in many key statewide races.
