Adapting Toys for Accessible Play with Greg Nakata, AIA

Advocacy and Inclusion Through Medical Play with Mary Jenner with The Butterfly Pig
Chasity is joined by Mary Jenner, founder of The Butterfly Pig, which specializes in creating medically inclusive toys. They discuss the importance of play with toys that represent disability and a child's own personal medical journey. They also discuss how medical play toys can increase can be used to improve disability inclusion in the upcoming generation. Mary Jenner is an oncology nurse by training, who started making miniature toys replicating medical devices for her own patients on the pediatric oncology unit where she worked. Her passion has now grown into The Butterfly Pig, a company making medically inclusive toys. These miniature replicas of medical equipment are used for play therapy in the hospital and at home, to bring representation to kids with medical needs, and help them process their unique experiences through play. She has experience working in early intervention, outpatient pediatrics, school based therapy and currently owns a cash based mobile pediatric physical therapy practice in Boise, Idaho. During her time as a PT, Dr. Baker has worked with children with a variety of health challenges and has found incredible purpose in helping parents celebrate each step forward their child makes in movement, often helping to guide parents to see changes they may not have noticed before. Dr. Baker is also a four time author who prides herself in educating parents.
