Counter-Reformation

The Counter-Reformation, also known as the Catholic Reformation, was a significant period of resurgence for the Catholic Church in response to the Protestant Reformation. Historian Adolphus Ward describes it as a movement with two primary goals revitalizing the Church of Rome and reclaiming the territories lost to the early successes of Protestantism. This transformative era began with the establishment of the Jesuit Order, a dedicated force aimed at achieving both objectives. The Council of Trent (1545-1563) played a crucial role in this movement, although it notably excluded efforts for conciliation with Protestant factions.
