344: Raising Capable & Confident Kids with David Thomas and Sissy Goff
This episode's guests might take the cake for most frequent guests on the podcasts – Sissy Goff and David Thomas! Throughout this insightful conversation with them, there is a question that I keep coming back to - are we protecting our kids or are we accidentally preventing them from becoming capable? That is the primary focus of not only our conversation today but also of their book – Capable: How to Teach Your Kids the Strengths, Skills, and Strategies to Build Resilience!Listen in as we unpack why so many loving, thoughtful parents are exhausted from carrying responsibilities their children are actually ready to begin taking on themselves. From chores and homework to conflict resolution, independence, and even sleeping in their own beds, we talk honestly about how resilience is built, and it is not through perfection or pressure but instead through practice, discomfort, and trust. One of the most eye-opening parts of this conversation is our discussion around “coddling.” We don't talk about it in a judgmental way but in the very real sense that fear can quietly shape our parenting more than we realize. We talk about why boundaries do not damage attachment, why kids need opportunities to safely take on challenges, and how confidence grows when children are allowed to solve problems instead of being rescued from every single difficult moment. We also get practical, with Sissy and David sharing some simple, age-appropriate ways that parents can begin shifting responsibility to their children, whether they’re toddlers, elementary-aged kids, teenagers, or even young adults. We discuss natural consequences, teaching children to ask for help, encouraging self-advocacy, and how overmonitoring can unintentionally communicate, “I don’t think you can handle this.”This episode is all about becoming a steadier parent, and we discuss the importance of modeling courage ourselves, letting our kids see us try new things, fail, recover, and grow. If you’re listening as a parent thinking, “I didn’t do this soon enough,” I think you’ll find a lot of hope in this conversation too. I hope that you enjoy this conversation with Sissy and David, and, as always, please feel free to reach out to me with your own thoughts! In This Episode[0:35] - Welcome Sissy Goff and David Thomas back to the podcast![1:43] - Resilience grows when children face manageable challenges instead of parents constantly preventing discomfort.[4:06] - Sissy and David point out that healthy boundaries and accountability build secure attachment without coddling.[7:39] - Sissy asserts that overprotection based on fear can unintentionally limit children’s confidence, independence, and emotional growth.[10:08] - Parents should gradually shift everyday responsibilities onto their children that they're already close to being able to do on their own.[13:38] - It's important for parents to manage their own anxieties as a model for their kids.[15:08] - Hear David exemplify how trying unfamiliar things helps parents model resilience, perseverance, and empathy for struggling children.[18:34] - Simple everyday responsibilities help young children discover their abilities and build lasting confidence.[20:02] - David argues for the importance of honoring each child’s developmental pace and trusting that they will grow into capabilities in their own time.[22:35] - I discuss how teaching children to communicate needs and ask for help builds lifelong emotional and problem-solving skills.[24:01] - David and Sissy believe that children build confidence and resilience via independence, responsibilities, and experiences outside of their comfort zones.[26:11] - I add that encouraging self-advocacy helps children build confidence and handle challenges independently.[29:37] - It's important to remember that each parent-child relationship carries unique dynamics that impact expectations, behavior, and emotional growth.[32:01] - Sissy explains how kids benefit from experiencing natural consequences alongside empathy, encouragement, and supportive guidance.[33:44] - Small, gradual lessons in responsibility help children become confident, capable, and adaptable adults.[37:04] - Children ultimately thrive when parents nurture their existing strengths instead of putting extra pressure on them.[38:36] - David reminds us that growth happens at different paces and that it’s never too late to encourage independence.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksCapable: How to Teach Your Kids the Strengths, Skills, and Strategies to Build Resilience by Sissy Goff & David ThomasSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

343: The Surprising Lessons I’m Learning from Training for a 10k
Funnily enough, this episode of The Crystal Paine Show was originally supposed to be about my 22-hour getaway with Jesse and then naturally became much more an episode about running and how I have been training for a 10k! Listen in as Jesse and I share how a two-week break from the podcast turned into a reflection on just how full life has been lately! From the chaos of baseball season to the unexpected intensity of my 10K training, things have truly been hectic. Between juggling travel ball schedules and long practices with Jesse and Silas, I have also been dealing with a completely new challenge for myself: running longer distances than I ever thought I could! What began as a simple goal has turned into a deep learning experience around pacing, breathing, fueling, and even rethinking how I understand my own body, and I talk openly in this episode of the show about how I’ve had to slow down, correct my breathing habits, and even explore things such as mouth taping after dealing with laryngitis and realizing how much my old habits were holding me back from my full potential.I share how, as I have trained, I have been so surprised by how much running has changed not just my fitness but also my mindset. I am really learning that endurance is just as mental as it is physical and that sometimes finishing a run is less about speed and more about choosing to keep going one small step at a time. I also share how tools such as the RUNA app and Strava have helped me structure my training and actually understand what it means to train smart instead of just hard. It has been such a fascinating journey discovering firsthand how much strategy goes into something as simple as going for a run!Beyond the physical side, I also reflect on what it means to take on something new in my forties and how running has unexpectedly opened up new ways of seeing my neighborhood, my routines, and even my own limits. From exploring unfamiliar streets to learning how to manage discomfort, this journey has become about more than just race day. It’s about growth, curiosity, and learning to trust myself in the process. Jesse and I also discuss how this experience connects to bigger life themes such as stepping into new and even initially uncomfortable challenges, embracing uncertainty, and letting our kids see us do hard things. I hope that you enjoy this episode, and, as always, please feel free to reach out with your thoughts! We would love to hear from you!In This Episode[0:35] - Baseball season overwhelmed our schedule, pausing the podcast temporarily.[3:37] - Hear how training for a 10k has been exhausting but also has taught me pacing and breathing.[6:02] - I talk about how running has also exposed poor breathing habits, leading to Laryngitis and a shift toward nasal breathing and better pacing.[9:39] - I explain how mouth-taping has helped me retrain nasal breathing and has improved sleep and morning symptoms.[12:01] - Jesse and I discuss how conscious nasal breathing improves congestion, sleep quality, and overall stress regulation.[15:38] - I enthuse about how running has become transformative for me via consistency, endurance building, and mindful pacing over speed.[18:09] - I reveal how the Runna app creates personalized training plans that highlight structured pacing and prevention of injury.[19:32] - For me, running has become a deeply mental challenge where fueling, hydration, and self-talk determine whether I finish strong![22:07] - Jesse and I talk about how training beyond race distance helps build endurance, confidence, and better performance on the day of the race.[25:12] - Hear how post-race plans will be decided later on but will focus on growth, exploration, and flexible running goals![28:11] - I reflect on how what began as a casual activity has turned into a truly meaningful way to explore surroundings and daily life more intentionally.[30:28] - Jesse remarks that embracing uncertainty in challenges can be motivating, but lack of preparation can also cause setbacks.[33:32] - Hear how race strategy focuses on maintaining a steady personal pace using training data and body awareness instead of competition.[36:28] - My running journey has truly grown into a broader reflection on self-growth, balance, and learning to “run your own race.”Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineRunna AppFartlek App (Apple)Fartlek App (Google)Strava AppBooksBreath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James NestorSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

342: Discovering Your Communication Type with Jason VanRuler
I am truly so excited for this episode because, honestly, it felt like a little therapy session for me, and I really hope that it gives you some aha moments too! I am talking with Jason VanRuler about his book Discovering Your Communication Type: The Five Paths to Deeper Connections and Stronger Relationships, and right from the start as I read it, I was hooked. I could see how the insights would help me with my husband, my kids, and my friendships because it’s practical, relatable, and so surprisingly accessible - like someone finally saying, “Here’s how this actually works,” without all the jargon!Jason walks us through the five communication styles that make up his PATHS model - Peacemaker, Advocate, Thinker, Harbor, and Spark - and he explains how our words are driven by different motivations: maintaining peace, standing up for what’s right, being logically correct, protecting feelings, or bringing energy and momentum. He and I get into how knowing your style (as well as the styles of those around you) can truly change your conversations, especially when conflict or stress shows up. I had one of those aha moments when I realized that I have been showing up in relationships in ways I think are expected of me, instead of who I am actually wired to be, and yes, that includes my husband and me missing each other mid-conversation more than I’d like to admit. We also discuss how these patterns can also have strong impacts on parenting, friendships, and even self-care, and one story that hit me hard was realizing that holding out my “I got this, let me help you” sign often keeps people at arm’s length because vulnerability feels too risky. Learning to express my needs without fear has been such a huge game-changer. Listen as Jason shares some practical tips for seeing differences as gifts, understanding where misunderstandings come from, and how intentional awareness can make every conversation more meaningful. By the end, I felt so inspired to rethink how I show up, listen, and allow people in without expecting them to mirror me exactly. If you have ever wanted a roadmap for connecting more authentically with the people in your life (family, friends, colleagues, or even yourself), then this episode is full of insights that really stick, and be sure to grab a copy of Discovering Your Communication Type!In This Episode[0:35] - Today’s conversation is with Jason VanRuler, author of Discovering Your Communication Type.[2;28] - I open up and admit that Jesse and I sometimes misunderstand one another mid-conversation.[3:47] - Jason explains his five paths.[5:19] - I reflect on having realized that I balance advocacy with a learned harboring to meet others’ expectations.[7:49] - Early-life communication patterns often resurface during stress, helping to explain misunderstandings in adult interactions.[9:14] - Jason notes that awareness of our communication style allows us to give and receive meaningfully.[11:58] - Hear how I have recognized that accepting care for myself felt as vulnerable as asking for it.[14:07] - Hear how Jason realized expressing needs clearly allows others to love and support more fully.[17:02] - Sharing vulnerability with multiple people enriches life and strengthens relationships.[19:43] - Jason and I talk about how understanding and valuing different communication styles strengthens relationships and lessens conflict.[22:02] - Effective communication requires listening, understanding others’ perspectives, and adjusting your approach for each situation![25:45] - Jason reflects that healthy relationships require patience, mutual effort, and embracing others’ timelines.[29:08] - Hear how writing prompted Jason to recognize the value of outside perspectives for self-awareness.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksDiscovering Your Communication Type: The 5 Paths to Deeper Connections and Stronger Relationships by Jason VanRulerSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

341: Five Exciting Updates at Our House
Listen in this week as Jesse and I share five exciting updates from the Paine house as of late! Some of our updates are more practical, some are deeply personal, and a few honestly caught me completely off guard, and Jesse comes into the conversation without knowing what I am going to share, which makes it even more fun as we walk through what’s been happening behind the scenes in our world!I start off with something that might sound minor but honestly felt pretty significant to me - a recent dentist visit that went surprisingly well after years of being told something was wrong with my teeth. After working with a functional medicine doctor and trying oil pulling (something that I was very skeptical about), I had a completely different experience at my last appointment. It made me think more about the connection between oral health and overall health and whether some of the small habits that I have added might actually be making a difference. From there, we share an update about our son David as he prepares to start kindergarten this fall. If you have been following our story, then you know how remarkable that moment feels for our family. David's team has been working closely with us to create a plan that supports his unique needs, and hearing the goals that they have set for him is both exciting and emotional. David continues to surprise everyone with his determination and personality, and we talk about some of the ways that he’s already showing just how capable that he is!Another unexpected development is that I agreed to run a 10K with our daughter. That decision has launched me into a whole new world of running, training, and learning far more about shoes and socks than I ever expected. I also share how an unexpected invitation is taking me to Guatemala this summer, something that’s been on my heart since we adopted David, and finally, the biggest update of all: I finished writing my next book! I reveal the title, share the story behind how it came together, and explain why this project feels especially meaningful to me. I hope that you enjoy this episode, and please feel free to reach out with your thoughts! In This Episode[0:35] - Jesse and I are sharing five recent updates from our home![2:30] - Hear how, despite brushing obsessively, discussing my dental history revealed more serious oral health concerns.[3:52] - I share how, after months of oil pulling, my dentist visit finally showed unexpectedly healthy teeth.[7:26] - Realizing oral health affects overall health, I have begun flossing far more often.[8:28] - David will start kindergarten with extensive support, continually surprising everyone with his determination![11:57] - Although full days can be tiring, we are so excited for David’s growth and the support surrounding him![13:58] - Hear how I impulsively agreed to run a 10K and am now learning how to train.[16:37] - I discuss how a salesperson encouraged me to try specialty socks, and I loved them so much that I bought two pairs![18:14] - Hear how new running shoes improved my comfort and endurance, helping me run three miles without stopping.[20:59] - Unexpectedly invited on a church trip, I’m finally visiting Guatemala, a longtime personal dream![23:46] - I reveal that, after nearly two years of work, I finally completed the manuscript for my upcoming book.[26:43] - I also reveal the title of my new book – The 7 Habits of Financially Healthy Women.[29:22] - Early preorders of the upcoming book include access to a live Q&A call with me!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksThe 7 Habits of Financially Healthy Women: How to Stop Stressing, Begin Where You Are, and Build the Future You Want by Crystal PaineSign up for the free live Q&A call with Crystal when you pre-order!Social MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

340: How to Love Your Morning Even If You’re Not a Morning Person with Jennifer Dukes Lee
I am so thrilled to have today’s guest on the show because not only does she have brilliant insights to share, she is also a very dear friend as well as my acquisitions editor! Jennifer Dukes Lee is the author of the book How to Love Your Morning: Faith-Filled Habits to Build a Life of Joy and Purpose One Day at a Time, and she joins me for this episode to talk about just that - how to love your morning!Jennifer offers a truly refreshing perspective that mornings aren’t about the time on the clock but are rather about the mindset that you bring into the day. You don’t have to wake up at 5 a.m. or have two hours of quiet to start well. It’s about the little intentional choices that you make such as greeting God in prayer, practicing gratitude, or reflecting on scripture. She reframes mornings as sacred opportunities even on the hardest days and gives practical ways to create rhythms that fit your life, whether you’re caring for kids, grieving, exhausted from night shifts, or just overwhelmed. We talk about how small, realistic habits such as setting out clothes the night before, keeping a prayer list by the coffee (or, in my opinion, espresso) maker, or even just stepping outside for a moment of sunlight can truly change your day by setting it on the right track. Listen in as Jennifer shares stories from women across different life stages, as well as historical and everyday figures, showing that there’s no one “perfect” morning routine. I especially love how her book makes it so accessible; it’s permission-giving, practical, and so encouraging! We also discuss the accompanying six-session Bible study that helps you explore mornings in scripture, offering a chance to go deeper, alone or with friends. Jennifer’s insights reminded me why approaching the day with intention, hope, and God at the center can reshape not just your mornings but your overall life! If you have ever wished that mornings felt less stressful, more meaningful, or simply more joyful, then this episode is definitely for you! Tune in, and please, as always, feel free to reach out to me with your thoughts! In This Episode[0:35] - I welcome my good friend Jennifer Dukes Lee to the show to talk about her book How to Love Your Morning![1:52] - Jennifer explains how being a morning person is mindset-focused, not defined by the hour you wake.[4:05] - Jennifer encourages shifting stressful routines into meaningful rituals such as prayer, gratitude, or scripture reflection.[6:23] - Even during grief or sleepless nights, morning rituals can help you face the day with presence and strength.[9:52] - I point out that impactful mornings rely on small, realistic habits, not two-hour perfect routines.[11:13] - Simple, sacred practices like prayer and stepping outside invite God into the start of each day.[14:49] - I reflect on how stacking small, accessible habits onto daily tasks helps create meaningful morning rhythms.[17:39] - I also reflect on how giving up coffee was initially difficult because it felt like giving up part of my morning ritual.[19:00] - Jennifer encourages listeners to begin their mornings with meaningful habits, movement, nourishment, and healthy sleep routines.[22:55] - Preparing for my morning the night before has been a big gamechanger.[25:16] - Jennifer highlights how even just one intentional habit can create calmness and inspiration for the whole morning.[28:28] - Mornings don’t need to be the same for everyone; effectiveness depends on what fits your life.[31:19] - Scripture reveals mornings to be spiritually important; starting the day with hope aligns us with God’s design.[34:54] - Doing morning practices with friends can help strengthen accountability and boost everyday joy.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksHow to Love Your Morning: Faith-Filled Habits to Build a Life of Joy and Purpose One Day at a Time by Jennifer Dukes LeeHow to Love Your Morning Bible Study: 6-Session Guided Journey to Build a Life of Joy and Purpose One Day at a Time (Devotional Study to Start Your Day and Wake Up Thanking God for Every Sunrise by Jennifer Dukes LeeSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

339: Jesse Chaperoned a Trip to Denver
Although we inadvertently took a few weeks off from the podcast, we are back, and overall, the most accurate way to describe life lately is “full.” Between spring breaks, kids popping in and out of the house, and multiple trips layered on top of one another, quiet moments have been pretty rare around here.Listen in this week as Jesse and I do something we hadn’t actually had time to do yet: sit down and process everything that’s happened over the past few weeks. We talk about the whirlwind of travel – his father-son ski trip to Utah with Silas, my church retreat, and, of course, the titular school trip to Denver that Jesse chaperoned, which he describes as “the most servant-oriented trip I’ve been on.”Of course, though, life did not slow down when the trips ended. In fact, we walked straight from the airport into a memorial service for three young men whose lives were tragically cut short. One of them had been very close to our family, and the loss really hit our girls – and all of us – deeply.A big part of this episode, however, as previously mentioned, focuses on Jesse’s time serving alongside students at the Denver Dream Center. Hear how they spent their days hiking in the mountains and their evenings working in inner-city Denver, sharing meals with people experiencing homelessness and connecting with people who were rebuilding their lives after incarceration. Listen as Jesse shares and reflects on some stories about the conversations that happened there such as moments where the goal wasn’t to “fix” anyone but simply to listen, learn names, and recognize the humanity in front of you!Jesse and I also discuss how even just small choices can shape the direction of a life (for better or worse) and how courage often looks like doing something that feels strange, risky, or unsupported. Sometimes, the most meaningful moments come when we step outside the safe little spaces we’ve built for ourselves and choose to do the thing that scares us most. I hope that you enjoy this heartfelt conversation with Jesse! In This Episode[0:35] - We have been absent for a few weeks because of a lot of chaos![3:45] - Jesse notes how we haven’t recorded since the trips, which became a major part of his story.[4:00] - I reflect on how, after returning home, we attended a tragic memorial before juggling several trips and retreats.[7:26] - Hear how Silas chose a Denver school trip where students hiked Colorado and served the homeless.[10:24] - What is the ultimate goal of the Denver Dream Center?[13:24] - Jesse and I talk about how serving others begins with seeing their humanity, learning their stories, and offering dignity and hope![16:35] - Serving others ultimately means seeing people’s humanity, learning from them, and connecting without superiority or judgment.[19:33] - I express my belief that experiences such as Silas’s trip help young people rethink priorities and what's truly important.[20:16] - Even small choices and courageous ones can reshape the direction of someone's life.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

338: Do This First Thing Every Morning with Addison Bevere
I am so excited to be bringing this conversation with repeat guest Addison Bevere to you! Addison is the author of the book Words with God: Trading Boring, Empty Prayer for Real Connection, and his work has really stayed with me since our last discussion. I have, in fact, told so many people about how his heart for faith feels grounded, honest, and alive, and, in this new episode, we talk about his new prayer journal that accompanies his book which is designed as a 40-day invitation to build a more real rhythm with God rather than trying to achieve perfect performance. After all, prayer should not be performative! One of the themes that keeps coming up throughout our conversation is the idea that prayer isn’t about getting the words right, and I reflect a bit about my own experience learning to slow down and practice rest as a spiritual discipline, something I never really thought much about before. Addison explains how many people feel they are “bad at prayer” because they approach it through shame or expectation rather than connection, and, instead, he frames prayer as simply showing up honestly and paying attention. We also unpack how quickly our mornings can be hijacked by screens, anxiety, or the pressure to immediately start producing, with Addison sharing a simple but powerful practice: when you wake up, breathe, rest in the moment, and allow your mind and heart to settle before grabbing your phone. He explains how early morning brain states may be uniquely open to reflection, creativity, and spiritual awareness, and I also reflect on how this practice has helped me move from feeling overwhelmed by life’s demands to seeing them as opportunities to respond with love and intention. Addison highlights the importance of writing down fears, burdens, or questions that can help name what we are carrying and create space for clarity. If you have ever felt unsure how to pray, struggled with slowing down, or longed for a deeper sense of closeness with God, this conversation offers a gentle, practical framework for beginning. I hope that you enjoy this conversation with Addison, and, as always, I would love for you to reach out with your thoughts! In This Episode[0:35] - Welcome Addison Bevere back to the show![2:07] - Addison believes that prayer thrives on relationship, not performance, and frees us from shame.[5:48] - Showing up honestly before God each morning is more important than fighting distraction or cultural pressure.[8:16] - Addison asserts that morning openness invites rest and awareness, while phone use often replaces calm with anxiety.[11:02] - Listeners are encouraged to breathe, rest, and avoid phones after waking to help nurture creativity.[13:24] - Surrendering control each day leads to clarity, compassion, and wisdom.[16:57] - Addison reminds us that remembering answered prayers and embracing limits helps foster humility, trust, and deeper spiritual growth.[19:39] - I describe relying on the Holy Spirit to guide parenting and daily conversations for me.[21:58] - Hear how morning listening helps Addison speak compassionately rather than react from a place of insecurity.[24:49] - I reflect on how starting the day slowly helps me reflect and reconnect with God and my body.[25:51] - According to Addison, writing fears or pain gives language to emotions, helping awareness and release.[27:22] - Hear how anxiety can help signal inner needs, helping discern God’s guidance vs. condemning voices.[30:44] - True prayer invites closeness with God and others, avoiding religious rigidity.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineThe Crystal Paine Show - 211. 337: My First Colonoscopy
Just as a forewarning, this week's episode might be a little bit TMI, but I did mention it coming up in a recent episode – my recent colonoscopy! While I don't get into the especially gritty details, I talk openly with Jesse about my experience because I really wanted to share the full story. I kept hearing from people who were scared of the procedure or avoided it because of what they’d heard about the prep, and I was nervous too, especially after reading all the horror stories online, but I found that preparation and good guidance made a bigger difference than I had expected!Listen in as I walk you through why I had the procedures in the first place, including my long history with chronic anemia and how my doctors wanted to look for possible root causes rather than just treat symptoms. A big part of the episode is the prep experience because honestly, that’s what people tend to dread the most. However, I talk about starting a low-residue diet days early, sticking to very bland foods, and what it actually felt like to move into the clear-liquids phase. I share how hunger, brain fog, and low energy showed up for me and how surprisingly manageable the laxative process was compared to what I feared. I also mention small practical things that helped such as choosing certain drinks and realizing that some flavors quickly became unappealing once prep started.I then walk you through the procedure day itself - checking in, getting an IV, anesthesia, and what it felt like waking up after sedation. The sedation was so strong and peaceful that I can understand why people describe it as a really good nap. In fact, I kind of didn't want to wake up! I also reflect on how disorienting that it felt trying to talk afterward when my brain wasn’t putting words together correctly.I also, of course, touch upon recovery, what my results looked like so far, and why I truly believe that these screenings are worth it, so if you have been afraid of getting a colonoscopy, I really hope that this episode with Jesse makes it feel a lot more approachable! As always, please feel free to reach out! I would love to hear your thoughts! In This Episode[0:35] - This episode shares my colonoscopy and endoscopy experience, addressing fear, prep, and cancer detection.[4:44] - Hear how I underwent procedures mainly because chronic anemia persisted since childhood and pregnancy complications occurred.[7:16] - Hear how low hemoglobin and ferritin levels led my doctor to recommend colonoscopy and endoscopy for diagnosis.[10:42] - I reflect on how I began a strict low-residue diet early, avoiding fiber, fruit, vegetables, and acidic foods.[13:52] - Hear how the clear-liquid phase felt surprisingly difficult, causing intense hunger, weight loss, and constant emptiness.[16:36] - I share how clear-liquid days drained my energy.[18:39] - I avoided mixing Miralax with my favorite drinks because prep may have made those drinks unappealing later.[20:32] - Preparing for laxatives, I found the worst fears exaggerated; one nauseous hour passed and then relief.[23:49] - Hear how mixing Miralax with Gatorade surprisingly tasted fine, and calories plus electrolytes improved my energy.[26:00] - I share how I chugged 36 ounces of prep fluid over two hours, experienced mild thirst, and slept mostly well.[29:43] - I describe how the anesthesiologist warned of a “spicy” feeling before sedation, and I instantly lost consciousness.[32:47] - Hear how I was completely out under propofol sedation, awakening groggy but unaware of the procedure.[34:56] - Waking from propofol felt hypnotically peaceful, and my body stayed unusually difficult to rouse.[37:18] - Hear how I wanted more sleep after waking, felt groggy, spoke coherently, but couldn’t fully process conversation.[39:27] - Hear how, post-procedure, I was so disoriented that I dropped food in the car but still ate it![42:22] - Recovery was quick, and results looked good, although biopsies and stool tests are still pending.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineCrystal’s Colonoscopy Instagram HighlightsSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

336: The Life-Changing Art of Self Brain Surgery with Dr. Lee Warren
I have been eagerly looking forward to doing this episode ever since I got my hands on Dr. Lee Warren’s new book, The Life-Changing Art of Self-Brain Surgery. The title alone had Jesse asking, “Wait… self-brain surgery?” Honestly, I actually had the same thought, but what Lee shares in this conversation completely blew me away. He is a brain surgeon, and he has discovered that the same principles he uses in the operating room can be applied by each of us to literally change our own brains - via our thoughts! Most of what runs through our minds every day is false, negative, or repetitive, keeping us stuck, but when we intentionally practice new ways of thinking, we can rewire our brains in real time and reshape the life that follows, and, in this episode of The Crystal Paine Show, Lee and I talk about why our culture often convinces us that we are powerless to change, why 80% of our thoughts are false, and how the simple act of noticing and choosing our thoughts can literally transform our neurochemistry, our bodies, and our perspective!Lee and I dive into practical tools - from prayer and meditation to quiet reflection - that help filter out the noise and build mental habits that help make us calmer, more resilient, and more intentional. We also explore the deeply human side of change - the grief, loss, and impossible days that can feel like they could crush us. Listen in as Lee shares his personal story of losing his son and welcoming a grandchild on the same day and how recognizing that two truths can exist at once (joy and sorrow) was life-giving and transformative.Tune in this week and see how science and scripture beautifully reinforce each other and how small, consistent actions can rebuild your mind, your habits, and your hope. If you have ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or powerless to change your thoughts and your life, then this episode will very likely challenge you, encourage you, and give you hope that real change isn’t just possible; it’s built into how you’re wired! As always, please feel free to reach out! I would love to hear your thoughts! In This Episode[0:35] - Welcome to the show, Dr. Lee Warren, author of The Life-Changing Art of Self-Brain Surgery![1:13] - Lee argues that our thoughts physically influence our brains, giving us real agency over our lives.[4:46] - It's important to pause to examine thoughts because doing so allows for rational thinking to replace fear and rewires healthier habits.[7:21] - I reflect on how replacing false, negative thoughts with truth changed my brain, behavior, and parenting.[8:31] - What we focus on filters our perception, giving us responsibility over how life appears to us.[10:56] - Lee explains how consistently practicing positive focus rewires the brain - building calm, wise, and grounded habits.[14:38] - Lee argues that healing ultimately comes from focusing on the future, not dwelling on past trauma or suffering.[18:02] - Trauma breaks beliefs, not you, and small courageous actions retrain the brain for resilience![21:31] - Lee has learned how deep sorrow and real beauty can exist simultaneously, revealing hope even in darkness.[24:10] - I point out how many face a pit of grief where summoning the strength to act feels impossible.[25:07] - Hear how, for Lee, necessity forced action, showing how focused thoughts instantly change neurochemistry and emotional response.[28:28] - Lee explains how changing your thoughts intentionally produces real-time brain and body changes, proving that mental rewiring is literal.[30:05] - Lee and I discuss how you can only control your own responses and perspective, not others or circumstances.[31:45] - Ultimately, you can only control yourself, not others or circumstances.[33:19] - Lee reminds us that emotions are chemical events, not facts, and controlling your thoughts directs your emotional response.[35:22] - Recognizing your agency in daily choices shifts perspective and builds gratitude for what you can control.[36:35] - Lasting change requires lifelong practice and retraining learned patterns to create healthier mental habits!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksThe-Life Changing Art of Self-Brain Surgery: Connecting Neuroscience and Faith to Radically Transform Your Life by W. 335: My Grandma Hobbies Era
This week on The Crystal Paine Show, I want to talk about something that has unexpectedly changed my life this year - what I jokingly call my “grandma hobbies era.” When I first shared that phrase online, it stirred up more feelings than I ever expected. Some people really loved it, but some were really bothered by it. For me, it’s a playful way to describe something deeply meaningful: choosing activities that slow me down, calm my body, and help me feel present again! Two years ago, if I had heard myself talking about puzzles, watercoloring, baking, or crocheting a scarf, I probably would have thought something had gone very wrong. Back then, my life was full of adrenaline, constant urgency, and never-ending to-do lists. I didn’t realize how tightly I was living until I started to loosen my grip, and with the encouragement of my functional medicine doctor, I began intentionally creating space - working fewer hours, building in white space, and letting go of the need to always be “on,” and in that space, I found myself drawn to simple, creative things that didn’t demand anything from me other than just my attention.Listen in this episode as Jesse and I open up honestly about what it has been like to step out of fight mode and learn how to rest, and I share how scary it felt to reduce my work hours as the CEO of a company, how much anxiety that stirred up, and how it revealed an idol of control that I hadn't even realized I had. I also share the surprising ways that God met me in that place - financially, emotionally, and spiritually - when I ultimately chose to trust instead of hustle.Jesse and I also talk about what it feels like when your calendar finally has breathing room, when your to-do list doesn’t fill the page, and when people start to feel like opportunities instead of interruptions. We laugh about puzzles, sourdough, and my very flexible relationship with recipes, but even more than that, we talk about what it means to live from a calmer place and show up more fully to the people and work we love! Please tune in this week, especially if you are tired, running on adrenaline, or craving a slower, richer way to live. Maybe it’s time to find your own version of a “grandma hobby.” I hope that this conversation encourages you, and, as always, I would love to hear from you, so please feel free to reach out!In This Episode[0:35] - This episode is about how the phrase “grandma hobbies” is a playful, positive term for calming activities that have unexpectedly improved my life![3:07] - I talk about how leaning into energizing “grandma hobbies” helps me re-regulate my nervous system and move out of constant fight mode.[6:44] - Jesse and I discuss how living constantly in fight-or-flight exhausts the body because it was designed only for short-term survival.[7:30] - I explain how calming, repetitive hobbies redirect my focus and gently regulate my nervous system without adrenaline or urgency.[9:42] - I reflect on how letting go of rigid rules revealed how I was addicted to adrenaline and uneasy with newly open space.[11:11] - Hear how cutting back hours exposed my fear, control, and misplaced belief that success depended solely on me.[14:40] - I argue how choosing trust over hustle showed me that rest, not control, leads to freedom.[17:26] - Hear how working less has made my life richer, calmer, and more present across work, relationships, and creativity.[20:28] – Jesse and I talk about how working fewer hours has improved my energy, sleep quality, and overall well-being by preventing constant exhaustion.[21:31] - Jesse and I discuss how intentional stillness via simple, calming activities helps restore awareness, reduce stress, and regulate the nervous system![24:36] - I am finding that simple creative hobbies create space, restore calm, and help me show up with joy and love!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

334: Don’t Burn Your House Down with Lindsey Maestas
Several years ago, Lindsey Maestas challenged me to see Jesse not as another task on my never-ending list but rather as a person again - a moment that stuck with me, and in this season of raising a big family and carrying a lot of weight, I realized how easily my marriage had slipped to the back burner. So for this episode, I invited Lindsey on to talk about what it really looks like to choose your marriage when life is busy or you are tired, hurting, or feeling like life is difficult.Using her book Don’t Burn Your House Down as the basis of our conversation, Lindsey and I talk about the quiet disappointments that build up such as when a gift feels impersonal or you feel completely unseen and why those moments often point to deeper needs, not deal-breakers. Lindsey shares why love doesn’t “just happen,” how unspoken expectations create distance, and what to do when your spouse hears your requests as criticism or failure. We uncover the anxious–avoidant cycle, the danger of keeping emotional receipts, and why fighting fire with fire only burns the house down even faster. One of my favorite parts of this episode is honestly when we shift away from heavy conversations and talk about rebuilding friendship. Laughter, play, small acts of service, and even silly moments can soften hearts in ways that words sometimes can’t, and Lindsay explains the power of what she calls “micro attractions” - the tiny daily choices that quietly say, “I see you.” We also talk about why trying to change your spouse almost never works and how real change begins when you look honestly at yourself. This conversation is for anyone who feels lonely in their marriage, overwhelmed by life, or just wants to build a stronger marriage. It’s not about pretending things are fine but rather about choosing hope, humility, and connection again, even when it feels easier to quit.In This Episode[0:35] - Join me in welcoming Lindsey Maestas, author of Don’t Burn Your House Down![2:34] - Lindsey believes that love and connection in marriage require daily, intentional choices, even during difficult periods.[4:30] - Despite struggles, couples can find hope, tools, and renewed commitment in marriage.[7:29] - Lindsey has seen how small daily disappointments reveal deeper needs for care, attention, and consideration.[9:20] - While you can't change my spouse, you can choose to love and communicate well.[11:48] - Lindsey has learned that conflict often stems from unspoken expectations, and clarity requires open explanation.[14:15] - Our anxious–avoidant patterns trap us, and breaking them requires addressing and naming the cycle.[17:05] - Lindsey asserts that rebuilding friendship, play, and shared joy often reconnects hearts more than repeated conversations.[20:16] - I add how, amid daily chaos, couples need to remember to nurture joy and play in their marriage.[21:14] - Hear how fighting fire with fire fuels resentment, whereas forgiveness and grace restore connection.[24:19] - Ultimately, marriage reveals our flaws and calls us to become more like Christ.[27:14] - Shifting expectations from spouse to God relieves pressure and highlights small acts of love.[29:02] - Lindsey explains how micro gestures such as noticing, serving, and affirming help build the strongest foundation in marriage.[32:00] - Lindsey points out how letting go of resentment can lead to relational growth.[34:00] - Becoming our best selves honors God, strengthens marriage, and revitalizes energy and joy.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksDon’t Burn Your House Down: Prioritizing Your Marriage, Your Spouse, and Yourself for a Deeper Connection by Lindsey MaestasSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

333: Why I Started Wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor
Join me and Jesse this week as I share what it has actually been like wearing a continuous glucose monitor as a non-diabetic, why I decided to try it, and what I’ve learned about my body in the process. It all starts in the middle of a very real “snowpocalypse” with canceled plans, sick kids, and a scrapped anniversary trip, which somehow turned into the perfect time to slow down, rest, and pay closer attention to my health!I walk you through the basics of what a continuous glucose monitor is, how the non-medical versions work, and why my functional medicine doctor encouraged me to use one for a few months. I also dig into why I chose the brand that I did, what it cost, how easy it was to install and remove, and what it actually feels like to wear one day to day. (It’s way less intense than I expected, and I forgot it was even there most of the time!)The real value for me, though, has been the data. Seeing my blood sugar in real time completely changed how I think about food, especially carbs, protein, and movement. Listen in as I share how I assumed that I had major blood sugar issues only to find out that my levels were actually pretty stable and that most of my past “crashes” were likely from under-eating and not getting enough protein. I break down the biggest patterns that I noticed such as why carb-only snacks spike my blood sugar, why starting meals with protein matters, and how even a short walk after eating can make a measurable difference.Jesse and I also get into some surprisingly practical discoveries such as why eating the same foods in a different order changes the outcome, how workouts affect glucose levels, and why three muffins in one evening sounded fun but did not feel great later. This episode isn’t about perfection or rules. No; it’s about curiosity, small experiments, and using real feedback from my own body to make better choices, so if you have ever wondered how your habits actually impact your energy, focus, or overall health, then this episode is basically me being your guinea pig so you don’t have to be! Tune in, and, as always, I would love to hear from you, so please feel free to reach out!In This Episode[0:35] - We’re in the middle of a snowstorm, prepped for possible power loss![3:30] - Hear how my anniversary with Jesse was planned, but Micah suddenly complained of ear pain before we could leave.[4:41] - Hear how both kids tested positive for strep, with Micah also having COVID and an ear infection.[7:37] - I discuss how I avoided strep but feel that I might have borderline laryngitis, so I’m resting at home and taking vitamins.[8:53] - I explain how continuous glucose monitors for non-diabetics give real-time data to help me understand my body.[11:23] - I chose the Stello monitor because it’s accessible, affordable, and shows data without alarms![12:55] - The sensor is easy to insert, a tiny filament under the skin, not a needle.[16:24] - Hear how the monitor sits in fluid around my muscle, stays secure with tape, and is barely noticeable![18:01] - I discuss how my device lasted nine days, was easy to remove, and unexpectedly revealed stable blood sugar.[20:04] - I explain how eating consistently, especially protein first, stabilizes my blood sugar, while carb-only snacks cause spikes.[22:48] - Eating carbs alone spikes my blood sugar unless I exercise immediately afterward.[24:25] - Hear how I learned that eating protein first stabilizes blood sugar, whereas carb-first meals cause spikes.[27:12] - I explain how combining carbs with protein prevents spikes, but carbs alone raise my blood sugar.[28:45] - Hear how moving shortly after meals helps stabilize blood sugar, especially if I first eat carbs.[31:45] - The order of eating foods such as protein before vegetables significantly affects blood sugar.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSteloSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

332: One Man’s Journey from Abuse & Addiction to Forgiveness and Redemption with Stephen McWhirter
Trust me, you are not going to want to miss this episode’s honest and vulnerable conversation with Stephen McWhirter, author of the memoir Radically Restored: How Knowing Jesus Heals Our Brokenness. I have really been looking forward to sharing this episode because his story is raw, unsettling at times, and deeply hopeful, and it challenged me in ways that I couldn't have expected. Listen as Stephen opens up about growing up in a home where faith was loudly preached in public but painfully contradicted in private. We talk about what it does to a child when the person who represents God also causes pain and how that kind of hypocrisy can lead to anger, rebellion, and addiction for years, and Stephen openly shares his long road into substance abuse, the surprising moment when everything began to change, and how his encounter with Jesus didn’t happen in a church pew but rather alone, surrounded by darkness and drugs where grace met him anyway.Stephen walks us through forgiveness in a unique way, and we talk about abuse, safety, boundaries, and the very real cost of forgiving someone who caused deep wounds, especially when that person is a parent. His story of forgiving his father (not once but over a lifetime) is one of the best parts of the conversation. We also spend some time talking directly to parents, friends, and loved ones who feel helpless watching someone they care about struggle, with Stephen offering hope for those carrying quiet shame, hidden addictions, or unanswered prayers, reminding us that repentance brings things into the light. If you are wrestling with forgiveness, addiction, trust, or the question of whether God is actually good, then this episode is absolutely for you, and if you’re the one praying for someone else and wondering if it matters, I truly hope that this conversation gives you real hope that restoration is possible, sometimes even in ways that we could never expect or plan for ourselves. Be sure to grab a copy of his book as well!In This Episode[0:35] - This episode is an interview with Stephen McWhirter, author of Radically Restored: How Knowing Jesus Heals Our Brokenness![1:39] - Stephen opens up about how his father’s public faith hid private abuse, fueling rebellion and addiction.[4:18] - Alone with drugs, Stephen realized that salvation required belief, not effort.[6:57] - Stephen believes that God met him outside church and used his story uniquely.[10:04] - For Stephen, obediently forgiving his father was unimaginably difficult.[12:48] - At his father’s deathbed, forgiving him aloud released Stephen and reshaped his understanding of grace.[15:37] - Stephen argues that forgiveness involves tearing up debt and opening the door to healing.[17:15] - Stephen asserts that a parent’s words matter most, but peers can powerfully redirect someone who is struggling.[19:52] - Hear how Stephen longed for honest apologies and repentance because hiding only deepens damage and prevents healing.[23:12] - Stephen believes that repentance brings hidden sin into light.[26:13] - Stephen shares how his mother's faith taught him that prayer is active trust, especially when loving someone feels helpless.[29:50] - Hear how knowing God’s character transformed Stephen's controlling prayers into trust that His will is genuinely good.[32:16] - Be sure to grab a copy of Stephen's book!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineThe Crystal Paine Show - 329: Why I Am Not Setting Goals in 2026BooksRadically Restored: How Knowing Jesus Heals Our Brokenness by Stephen McWhirterThe Case for Christ: A Journalist’s Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus by Lee StrobelSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

331: My Fun List for 2026
Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show! This one is a follow-up to the episode where I shared why I’m not setting goals for 2026, and if you haven’t listened to that one yet, I recommend you do so first because it gives some important context for everything I’m sharing here. Today, Jesse and I give you a peek into my “fun list” - the low-pressure, no-fail, creatively inspired approach I’m taking this year instead of traditional goals, and I am sharing how it’s already reshaping my life just eight days into 2026 (as of when we recorded this)!I talk about the various ways that I have been learning to exist without constant urgency. Years of nonstop goal-chasing left my nervous system overworked, and letting go of that pace has forced me to ask, “Who am I without projects defining my worth?” I share how sitting quietly, arriving early, and simply having space between tasks has actually been strangely calming and unexpectedly healing. We also dive into some very practical examples: everything from decluttering and organizing our home, creating better systems for the spaces which we already have, helping our kids take more ownership, to discovering joy in cooking, exploring new crafts like watercolor and embroidery, and simply enjoying small daily rituals like tea, walks, movies, and shows!Along the way, I also reflect on how my fun list allows me to enjoy life without pressure—no measuring, no stress, just inspiration. Listen in as I share how I am approaching social media differently this year, letting Instagram be a life-giving place again, and how I’m enjoying reading fiction for the sake of enjoyment, not just achievement. I really hope this episode inspires you to experiment with your own fun list, give yourself permission to slow down, and find joy in both the small and creative moments of life, and, of course, as always, we would love to hear from you!In This Episode[0:35] - This episode is a follow-up to episode 329 and discusses my “fun list” for 2026![1:28] - Hear how I visited a gastroenterologist due to chronic anemia, navigating confusion about colonoscopy and endoscopy.[4:59] - Jesse and I discuss how replacing rigid goals with a flexible “fun list” reduces pressure and avoids feelings of failure for me.[7:03] I discuss how fun lists inspire without pressure, unlike goals, which feel heavy and failure-laden for me.[10:22] - Not setting goals challenges my identity, revealing how much I tied worth to productivity.[13:32] - Hear how introducing myself without listing projects initially felt strange, highlighting how much I normally juggle.[15:02] - Letting go of constant goal-chasing calms my nervous system and creates healing space.[19:15] - Jesse and I talk about how embracing a fun list allows enjoying activities such as assembling puzzles without pressure, timelines, or discomfort with unfinished tasks.[20:18] - I am realizing that I cherish simple pleasures and keep them flexible, trusting that rest enhances rather than hinders productivity.[23:42] - I want to explore watercolor, embroidery, knitting, and possibly consider moving for more space.[25:39] - Hear how managing bedrooms and sibling dynamics shows the challenges of space and kids' competitive relationships.[27:35] - I talk about how creating home systems and decluttering improves daily life and prepares for a potential move.[30:58] - I am aiming to enjoy cooking, gym routines, and short trips without pressure or strict goals.[33:44] - I reflect on having rediscovered Instagram joy by posting freely and creatively, without focusing on strategy or metrics.[36:09] - The final thing on my fun list is to read more fiction.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineThe Crystal Paine Show - 329: Why I Am Not Setting Goals in 2026Social MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

330: How Understanding the Compassion of Christ Changes Us with Sherri Hughes-Gragg
Welcome to 2026, everyone! To kick off the new year, I am joined in the studio today by Sherri Hughes-Gragg, an author whose writing has truly changed the way that I read scripture and experience God. Her Advent devotional stopped me in my tracks this December, and her newest book, The Compassionate Christ, feels like exactly what many of us need as we head into a new year!Listen in as Sherri shares her story of growing up in a deeply legalistic Christian environment where rules mattered more than relationship, and doubt wasn’t just unwelcome but was dangerous. We talk about what it’s like to keep up appearances while you are privately unraveling and how years of trying to be “good enough” created a crushing sense of failure, especially in parenting. Her reflections are tender, unfiltered, and grounded in compassion – not only for herself but for her children and anyone who has carried spiritual shame longer than they should have.Hear how a turning point came when Sherri began studying scripture through its Middle Eastern cultural and historical context, including time spent learning in Israel. She explains how this lens transformed familiar passages and healed some long-held fears of hers, especially around the crucifixion and the belief that God turns away in our darkest moments. One moment in particular - Jesus’ words from the cross - reframed everything she thought she knew about God’s presence and faithfulness. We also discuss how understanding God’s compassion changes everyday life: how we parent, how we handle frustration, how we engage people with whom we deeply disagree, and how we resist the urge to play Holy Spirit in someone else’s life. This episode with Sherri isn’t about winning arguments but is about what freedom can look like when fear loosens its grip and how compassion could be one of the most powerful things we offer the world right now!In This Episode[0:35] - I am interviewing Sherri Hughes-Gragg, author of The Compassionate Christ.[1:45] - Sherri reflects on how growing beyond fear-based faith, studying Scripture’s context revealed a far kinder, compassionate Jesus.[4:45] - Sherri withdrew while doubting God’s existence, maintaining appearances until her honesty triggered some intervention.[6:28] - At Christian college, conformity replaced authenticity, leaving no safe space for doubt or being myself.[9:33] - Sherri discusses how impossible religious standards left her feeling daily failure, burdened, and regretful.[12:20] - Understanding God’s compassion challenges legalism and calls Sherri to treat even people with whom we disagree with dignity.[15:32] - Sherri asserts that listening quietly for God means trusting Him with others, including her adult children.[17:49] - As fear exhausted Sherri, studying the scripture’s Middle Eastern context and Jesus’ actions changed everything.[19:26] - Hear how studying in Israel sparked a new, healing understanding of scripture’s cultural context for Sherri.[22:36] - During edits of her book, Sherri caught herself overindulging details.[23:12] - Learning Jesus’ cry referenced Psalm 22 revealed God’s faithfulness, not abandonment, even on the cross.[26:56] - Experiencing God’s love over punishment brought daily peace and reshaped how Sherri parents her kids and treats others.[28:30] - I share how recognizing God’s compassion helps me meet frustration with empathy.[30:33] - Sherri's greatest hope is changed relationships - with God and each other - so the church reflects Jesus’ kingdom on earth.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksThe Compassionate Christ: Draw Near to the Risen Savior (A 31-Day Devotional Retelling of Stories from the Life of Jesus by Sherri Hughes-GraggSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

329: Why I Am Not Setting Goals in 2026
Tune in for our final episode of 2025 as Jesse and I talk about the top books we read, some major shifts in how I want to show up in life, and why I'm not setting any goals for 2026. I share my top four reads from the year - books that challenged me, inspired change, and gave me perspectives that I didn’t even know that I needed. From Is Your Daughter Ready? by Kari Kampakis, which offers guidance on raising daughters through modern challenges, to The Fight for Us by Rebekah and Gabe Lyons, which made me face the reality of a lopsided marriage and rethink how my priorities shape our relationship, each book left a lasting mark. Habits of the Household opened my eyes to the rhythms and habits already present in our family life, helping me reframe intentionality in small, practical ways, and The Many Lives of Mama Love gave me a raw, compassionate look at addiction, incarceration, and motherhood, pushing me to expand my understanding of struggles that so many face unseen.Alongside these book reads, I am also unpacking a major personal shift: I am not setting any goals for 2026. For someone who has been goal-oriented since childhood, this feels like an especially huge step for me, but after reflecting on a lopsided marriage, watching Jesse take such brave steps with his own coaching and health journey, and seeing how chronic stress has been silently wearing me down for decades, I realized that constant planning and pushing has been a default, not a necessity. My blood work and coaching experiences showed me how disconnected I had truly become from my own body, always running on adrenaline, cortisol, and extreme stress while mistaking calm endurance for health.I have ultimately decided that 2026 is about creating real breathing room - intentionally cutting back on commitments, slowing down, and filling my life with creative and meaningful practices rather than arbitrary deadlines. I am really learning to treat rest as a spiritual discipline, to stop using work as a crutch, and to allow space for real healing, connection, and reflection. I hope that you will listen to this episode as I share the books that shaped my year and the mindset shift that’s shaping the next!In This Episode[0:35] - I am sharing my top 2025 reads, and I explain skipping goals for 2026![3:35] - Here about how I chose books that impacted me deeply; I highlight Is Your Daughter Ready? and The Fight for Us.[6:32] - I discuss the impact that the book The Fight for Us had on me.[10:13] - Habits of the Household encouraged intentional family rhythms and shaped her upcoming 2026 book.[11:54] - I discuss how The Many Lives of Mama Love revealed addiction, incarceration, and motherhood with raw human insight.[14:14] - Jesse focused on historical fiction and military novels this year, gaining detailed Vietnam War knowledge from Jack Carr.[16:44] - I talk about how The Women explored Vietnam War nurses’ experiences, PTSD, and women’s challenges during the war.[19:55] - Hear how Jesse’s coaching and functional medicine journey sparked major life changes and health improvements.[22:50] - Overworking and chronic stress left my body constantly in fight mode, risking future collapse.[23:27] - Early-life coping patterns influenced decades of stress, now being reversed via conscious effort.[26:42] - Extreme stress had been normalized, hiding true health despite outward calm and endurance.[28:37] - I reflect on how chronic stress pushed me into survival mode, disconnecting me from bodily signals and rest.[31:40] - I realized that I had been so disconnected that I entirely missed the changing seasons.[32:37] - Life on autopilot made me overlook reality, leaving me feeling rushed, exhausted, and ungrounded.[35:32] - I share how overplanning caused stress.[37:37] - Choosing no goals allows focus on creative work while reducing hours and pressure.[40:59] - Living intentionally now highlights mindfulness and purpose but with far less stress than before.[41:24] - Practicing rest as a spiritual discipline frees me from overwork and supports deep healing.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineThe Crystal Paine Show - 307. 328: 25 Things I’m So Glad I Said Yes to in 2025
Join Jesse and I this week as I unpack 25 things that I said yes to this year that I am really glad that I did because they have genuinely changed and improved my life. Some of them look small from the outside (like pajamas, fiction books, or shopping in-store again), but every single one has left an indelible mark on my life, our family, the business, and/or all three. I spent more time preparing for this episode than any other because I wanted to name these moments clearly and honestly, without rushing past what they have taught me.Listen in to hear about rhythms that have helped me slow down, such as weekly Sabbaths, earlier bedtimes, and learning how to rest without guilt. I open up about choices that have really reshaped my relationship with my body such as hiring a dietitian, eating enough food, letting go of the scale for a season, and eventually saying yes to strength training and 5 a.m. workouts in a way that actually feels supportive instead of punishing. There’s also a lot here about joy and play: wearing dresses again, reading fiction, wearing real pajamas at night, traveling with my kids one-on-one, and even rediscovering how much I love showing up for baseball games!I also share some of the heavier yeses, the kind that require courage and wisdom such as leaving a toxic relationship and investing in deeper support via a business coach and a functional medicine doctor. Alongside that, I talk about growing our team, saying no to work that no longer fits, and how leadership feels different when you’re not carrying everything alone. 327: How to Avoid Unintentional Harm Through the Words We Speak (with Amy Hughes)
I am so excited to welcome Amy Hughes, author of Words Like Honey, to the studio for this episode! I want you to know this isn’t just an episode for parents of little kids. What Amy shares applies to marriages, friendships, classrooms, churches - any relationship where words matter, which is pretty much all of them. I found myself convicted not just about how I speak to my kids but about how I speak to Jesse too!Amy is a mom of nine with kids ranging from toddlers to adults, and her life is anything but quiet or controlled. Listen as she shares how she was thrust into motherhood at 19 years old, instantly becoming a stepmom to a 6-year-old, and how observing harmful parenting patterns early on shaped her desire to do things differently. Amy didn’t initially think much about her words at all, but it was watching how her kids reacted, misunderstood, and internalized things that she never meant that changed everything for her.We talk about how seemingly harmless phrases like “what’s wrong with you?” or “hurry up” can land very differently in a child’s mind, sometimes even leading to shame or anxiety when comfort was intended. Amy explains how small, thoughtful shifts in language can communicate empathy instead of blame and connection instead of pressure. We also talk about repair and why apologizing to our kids isn't a weakness, how humility can rebuild trust at any age, and why it’s almost never too late to begin again.Amy and I explore how asking guiding questions instead of giving quick answers helps kids develop confidence and problem-solving skills and why letting them wrestle with hard questions (especially when it comes to faith) is not dangerous but essential. She stresses that questions should never be shamed and shares why she believes doubt and curiosity can actually strengthen faith when they’re met with safety instead of shame. My conversation with Amy is truly honest, practical, faith-centered, and deeply human, and I strongly encourage you to go grab a copy of Amy's powerful book, and as always, I would love to hear from you, so send me an email at [email protected]!In This Episode[0:35] - This episode is an interview with Amy Hughes, author of Words Like Honey![1:49] - Amy discusses how our bustling, multigenerational household shaped her patience and parenting philosophy.[3:39] - Becoming a stepmom at 19 pushed Amy to question parenting norms and form her own.[5:25] - Amy reveals how witnessing a child be silenced until he wet himself cemented her refusal to silence kids.[7:56] - Hear how Amy eventually realized that parenting differently requires intentional speech, not just different actions.[10:01] - Amy's daughter’s long-held misunderstanding around stealing revealed how literally kids take words.[12:48] - Hear why we shouldn’t ask our kids, “What’s wrong with you?”[15:06] - Reframing “what’s wrong with you” into curiosity can help affirm children’s worth and help them feel heard.[16:30] - Amy discusses how empathetic language helps children feel supported, understood, and less anxious.[19:45] - Repair, rooted in humility and apology, can heal fractured parent-child relationships at any age.[22:09] - I discuss how showing children our flaws models grace, forgiveness, and faith far more powerfully than attempted perfection.[24:49] - Guiding kids with questions helps lead to confidence, critical thinking, and independence.[27:48] - I assert that letting children struggle and try builds life skills, resilience, and self-confidence.[30:29] - Amy highlights why it's important to not shame faith-based questions.[32:45] - Creating space for hard questions requires courage, prayer, and curiosity!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksWords Like Honey: How to Avoid Unintentional Harm, Model Kindness, and Nurture Your Child’s Faith Through What You Say by Amy HughesLove-Centered Parenting by Crystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

326: Why I Started Getting Up at 4:15am (it might surprise you!)
As we wrap up the year with this episode that may or may not be the final episode of 2025, Jesse and I sit down and talk through something real, something I’ve been wrestling with. I’m not really the type to plan out twelve months of episode themes. I record when it’s something actually shaping my life right now, and when it comes to this conversation? It has been shaping everything!Jesse and I thought that we knew what this episode would be about, but we definitely didn't. What it turned into was a little year-end heart check and a look at two habits that I have wanted to build for months: going to bed on time and strength training - the everyday stuff that’s weirdly difficult when life is already overflowing.Listen in as I share the moment a few weeks ago when I finally told Jesse, “I can't figure this out. Help me.” Between our kids’ schedules, it being baseball season, my own work rhythms, and that magical late-night second wind that has betrayed me many times, I truly wondered whether these habits were even possible, but Jesse then suggested something I never would have landed on by myself: a 5 a.m. class at our gym! I tell you how that first week went, what surprised me, and why the locker room shower in total silence may now be one of the great joys of my life.I also discuss the domino effect that this small shift has had on our family, including Micah suddenly turning into a cheerful morning person and how a functional medicine appointment forced me to face the truth that I am not nearly as rested or relaxed as I thought! If you’re ending the year wondering whether a habit that you have been circling forever is actually possible, I hope this episode gives you some hope, some ideas, and maybe even a little permission to try something wild!As always, I would love to hear from you, so send me an email at [email protected]!In This Episode[0:35] - This episode focuses on year-end lessons and rebuilding habits that finally stick![4:15] - I describe how daily unpredictability kept derailing her bedtime and workout intentions.[7:10] - Hear how the schedule review pushes me toward trying a consistent 5 a.m. workout class.[10:52] - I talk about how our 18-year-old daughter supports my first class where I finds a warm and encouraging gym community.[12:48] - Early workouts give her peaceful morning routines and even improve her three-year-old’s mood.[15:51] - I explain how earlier bedtimes boost my sleep quality, supporting the rest my doctor says that I need.[18:42] - I realize that I have been disconnecting from my body and ignoring my own physical signals.[20:36] - I have recognized that my constant “fight mode” is draining my body.[22:48] - My therapist has warned me that nonstop high alert will eventually break me down.[25:55] - I adopt a calm, light-free morning routine to support rest, grounding, and early workouts.[27:25] - I share my full rhythm to encourage listeners to build habits aligned with your deeper values.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

325: It’s Never the Wrong Time to Do the Right Thing with Nicole C. Mullen
I am so excited about having Nicole C. Mullen join me for The Crystal Paine Show for this episode! Nicole is the author of the book It’s Never the Wrong Time to do the Right Thing: Courageous Stories to Inspire Godly Decisions, and Nicole discusses one of the inspiring biblical stories that she explores in her book - the account of Abigail, the wife of the wealthy but foolish Nabal. As a self-proclaimed “Bible nerd,” Nicole discusses how, when Nabal insults David's men, the enraged David vows to destroy Nabal's household. Abigail quickly gathers provisions and goes to intercept David, humbling herself and pleading for mercy. Her wisdom and courage turn David away from his plan for vengeance, and later, when Nabal hears what Abigail has done, he has a fatal reaction, and David then takes Abigail as his wife.Nicole goes on to explain that Abigail's story teaches important lessons about responding vs. reacting and about the importance of timing and wisdom in difficult situations. She reflects on how Abigail's example has impacted her own life, especially during her experience of becoming a single mother, and she highlights the need for the church to better support and empower single mothers, who often feel unseen and unsupported. She recounts the legacy of her own grandparents, who fostered and adopted children, creating a true ripple effect of generational impact. My conversation with Nicole really highlights how one person's courageous choices can have far-reaching, even world-changing consequences, as seen in biblical figures such as Abigail and Moses' mother Jochebed. Nicole encourages listeners to step out in faith, even when it's scary. God can use our obedience in ways we can't imagine! As always, I would love to hear from you, so send me an email at [email protected]!In This Episode[0:35] - I welcome Nicole C. Mullen, author of the book It’s Never the Wrong Time to Do the Right Thing![2:06] - Nicole recounts Abigail’s bravery as she intervenes to stop David from slaughtering her household.[5:15] - Hear how Abigail’s swift courage and wise timing ultimately averted David’s anger and saved her home.[8:19] - Abigail waits wisely, reveals the crisis, and God, not her, ultimately removes her dangerous husband.[11:40] - Abigail's story teaches us that seeking divine wisdom and acting with calm timing prevents reckless reactions.[14:14] - Peace-guided choices, patient replies, and deliberate timing help us respond wisely instead of reacting rashly.[17:07] - Nicole reflects on how God guided her as a single mother despite fear and societal neglect.[20:50] - Supporting single mothers strengthens them and impacts future generations positively.[23:35] - I touch upon how helping one person’s healing creates a ripple effect across families and communities.[24:06] - Nicole traces her family’s legacy of faith, courage, and fostering children through generations.[27:11] - Even just one courageous, faithful act can create lasting ripples affecting families, communities, and even nations.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksIt’s Never the Wrong Time to do the Right Thing: Courageous Stories to Inspire Godly Decisions by Nicole C. 324: My 3-Week Experience with a Parasite
I do want to say right out of the gate that this is not an episode that you’re probably going to want to listen to while eating. (The title should give you a clue as to why.) Jesse joins me this week as I discuss having recently returned from a trip to India feeling great but then soon after developing severe gastrointestinal issues that lasted for weeks. I initially thought that it was just a stomach bug, but after my symptoms persisted, I realized that something a lot more serious was likely going on.Listen in as I describe feeling extremely nauseous, fatigued, and having constant diarrhea that left me bedridden for days. I had trouble keeping any food or drink down, and the medical professionals that I saw were hesitant to test for a parasite, even though many of my friends who had heard about my condition suggested that that was likely what was wrong.I reflect on how, after struggling through a trip to attend my brother's wedding, my condition worsened to the point at which I could barely move! At 2 a.m. in severe distress, I finally convinced Jesse to take me to the emergency room where they were able to quickly get my fluids and run tests, which confirmed that I had contracted a parasite during my trip to India. My ER visit and subsequent treatment, which included an antibiotic regimen, ultimately helped me begin to recover. I talk about how it took several more weeks to fully regain my strength, but I am so grateful that I persisted in advocating for myself and getting the right diagnosis. This is a longer episode than usual, but we hope that you got some laughs from it! We also hope that you take away an important message - it’s so important to advocate for yourself! As always, I would love to hear from you, so send me an email at [email protected]!In This Episode[0:35] - I am recounting returning from India with a parasite and hope that my story encourages self-advocacy.[4:05] - After getting home, my mild jet lag suddenly escalated into severe stomach illness by Friday night.[7:44] - Hear how, even though I was happy to be home, my lingering nausea and exhaustion only got worse.[9:44] - Despite trying to push through, my nausea persisted, leading to inconclusive clinic tests.[12:26] - Hear about how I initially skipped parasite testing, forcing fluids and sugar-heavy drinks while struggling with my dehydration getting worse.[15:45] - My exhausting trip left me bedridden, prayerful, and unable to work despite my usually high stamina.[17:37] - I recount how a brief, miraculous surge of energy allowed me to run a wedding before the sickness returned that night.[20:57] - I share how I became violently ill on the drive home and barely managed the trip without incident.[23:48] - Hear how my slight improvement convinced me to skip testing while I worked through a hectic week.[26:12] - I discuss how the long drive to Kansas went surprisingly smoothly, leaving me feeling cautiously optimistic.[27:16] - I talk about how, during rehearsal, I helped David down the aisle.[29:12] - I reveal how my illness peaked that night, leaving me curled on the floor and worrying that something was seriously wrong.[32:10] - Zofran gave me brief relief before I realized that I needed to get emergency care despite the wedding.[34:48] - I reflect on how the quiet late-night ER immediately admitted me, ran tests, and began me on fluids.[36:50] - The ER staff collected my stool sample in-room, leaving me mortified while Jesse nearly gagged from the smell.[39:42] - Jesse’s dramatic reaction forced staff to rush in, confirm the awful smell, and remove the sample.[42:02] - IV fluids and Zofran quickly revived me, marking the turning point toward daily improvement.[44:25] - I learned of my parasite diagnosis, recovered with treatment, and have taken on healthier habits.[46:42] - I share how, after a late-night call, I started a short antibiotic course, and I encourage listeners to advocate for yourselves!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

323: Raising Daughters That Are Ready for Adulthood with Kari Kampakis
I am so excited to present this episode to you because I sat down with Kari Kampakis, author of the new book Is Your Daughter Ready?: 10 Ways to Empower Your Girl for an Age of New Challenges. Tune in as Kari shares how she was inspired to write this book after her previous parenting books and as she recognized the unique challenges facing teenage girls today.Kari explains that her goal with this book is to provide practical guidance for mothers who currently have girls making that transition into adulthood. She highlights and explains the importance of preparing girls not just to be "lights" in the world but also to be discerning and resilient in the face of adversity. Drawing from her own experiences raising her daughters, Kari encourages moms to parent with open hands, trusting God's plan rather than trying to control every single outcome.I really resonate with Kari's advice, and I share some of my own struggles with the pressure that many parents feel to have their teenagers' futures mapped out. Kari advises against this, encouraging moms listening and reading her book to avoid overpacking their daughters' "suitcases" with unrealistic expectations, instead encouraging celebrating each child's unique God-given personality and gifts even when they differ from our own.Our conversation explores some practical ways to encourage discernment in teenage girls, such as teaching them to tune into their intuition about relationships and recognize red flags. We also highlight the value of involving fathers and other male role models in this process as well as the importance of having open, age-appropriate conversations about sensitive topics such as dating, technology, and sexuality.Throughout our conversation, we openly and vulnerably share some stories from our own journeys as parents, hoping to offer hope and wisdom to listeners. We hope to remind moms that perfection is unattainable but that trusting God and leaning on community can empower us to raise resilient, discerning daughters who are prepared to take on the challenges of this age!In This Episode[0:35] - I am interviewing Kari Kampakis, author of Is Your Daughter Ready?.[1:53] - Hear how Kari was inspired to write a practical book helping moms prepare daughters for life’s darkness and challenges.[4:10] - I discuss the pressure that teens face to plan their futures and how uncertain paths still work out.[5:06] - Kari stresses trusting God over control and focusing on children’s peace and mental health over perfection.[8:26] - Kari encourages moms to pray for guidance, lean on supportive communities, and remember God’s love for them.[11:20] - It's important to embrace each child’s unique personality instead of molding them into parental reflections.[13:38] - I share how accepting my 18-year-old's creativity and boldness strengthened our bond.[16:04] - Hear how faith and prayer helped Kari appreciate her daughter’s strong spirit.[18:45] - Kari stresses teaching our daughters to trust their intuition and recognize safe, healthy relationships early on.[21:51] - Kari explains how to distinguish loyal “real friends” from inconsistent “50-50 friends” who drain your peace.[24:49] - Kari recalls praying through her daughter’s unhealthy relationship and involving male role models for guidance.[27:28] - Kari advises starting relationships as friendships, learning from dating experiences, and valuing emotional compatibility.[29:47] - I stress the importance of observing potential partners in varied settings to reveal true character before committing.[31:31] - Kari encourages parents to initiate honest and age-appropriate talks early on.[34:40] - I reiterate the importance of preparing daughters for real-life challenges via open discussions and learning from others' experiences.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksIs Your Daughter Ready?: 10 Ways to Empower Your Girl for an Age of New Challenges by Kari KampakisLove Her Well: 10 Ways to Find Joy and Connection with Your Teenage Daughter by Kari KampakisMore Than a Mom: How Prioritizing Your Wellness Helps You (and Your Family) Thrive by Kari KampakisSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

322: Helping Our Kids Understand Their Worth and Identity in Christ with Elisabeth Hasselbeck
I am thrilled to welcome Elisabeth Hasselbeck for this episode of the show! Elisabeth is the author of the children’s book God’s Masterpiece: An Adventure in Discovering Your Worth, and from the very first moment she started sharing, I could feel her heart for moms, kids, and families. Her book isn’t just a storybook; it’s a reminder of something which we all need to hear again and again - that we are uniquely made with purpose and beauty woven into every part of who we are.During our conversation, Elisabeth and I talk about what it really means to see ourselves and everyone else as created in God’s image, changing how we parent, how we speak to others, and even how we handle conflict. When we remember that every single person, even the one we most disagree with, is a reflection of God’s creativity, it transforms how we show up in the world.Elisabeth opens up about how her family’s experience with fostering helped shape her understanding of love and surrender, and she talks about the freedom that comes from letting go of control, something all of us moms wrestle with daily! She also discusses learning to trust God with our children’s stories, and I even reflect on how that lesson has shown up in my own life, especially via prayer. We also take on that tricky tension between correcting our kids and speaking life over them, with Elisabeth reminding us that motherhood is not about perfect control but is rather about being a safe place. She speaks about how prayer doesn’t have to be fancy or formal, that God meets us right where we are whether it be in the car, at the kitchen sink, or in the middle of chaos, and He delights in us just showing up.This episode is for any parent or caregiver who is feeling weary, stretched thin, or unsure if they’re doing it “right.” You are sure to walk away feeling reminded that you and your kids are loved completely, and be sure to grab a copy of Elisabeth’s book!In This Episode[0:35] - I welcome Elisabeth Hasselbeck, author of God’s Masterpiece, to the show![1:08] - We learn that Elisabeth wrote God’s Masterpiece to remind families that each person is uniquely created by God.[3:15] - Elisabeth explains that her return to art and fostering revealed God’s love in every life story.[6:16] - I reflect on how remembering that everyone is made in God’s image transforms how I treat those with whom I disagree.[7:21] - Once we see others as God’s masterpieces, we are more compelled to love and protect them.[10:38] - Elisabeth believes that unity in Christ grows when families speak God’s truth over themselves and one another.[13:37] - Elisabeth describes motherhood as a balance of protection and release that is consistently guided by prayer and grace.[16:55] - Hear how prayer teaches me to release control and trust God with my kids' futures.[18:21] - Elisabeth says that fostering helped reveal the beauty of parenting via love, prayer, and freedom from control.[21:33] - Moms often seek quick fixes instead of first asking the Holy Spirit for wisdom.[22:14] - Elisabeth reminds moms that God meets them anywhere, anytime; even brief, imperfect prayers invite His presence.[25:32] - I add that prayer has no “right” way; God values honesty and dependence over perfection.[27:42] - Elisabeth describes faith as standing under God’s power, trusting His promises and resting in His presence.[29:45] - Thank you, Elisabeth!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksGod’s Masterpiece: An Adventure in Discovering Your Worth by Elisabeth HasselbeckSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

321: My 13-Day Trip to India
I have such exciting news to share this week on the show! I recently took an international trip to India, my first time traveling overseas in six years! I was initially hesitant to go because it would mean leaving the young kids for an extended period of 13 days - the longest that I have ever been away from them, but I felt a strong calling to make the trip despite my fears and reservations.Listen in as I share how, in Mumbai, my team and I spent some time in one of the world's largest slums, the Dharavi slum. We were really struck by the resourcefulness and industriousness of the slum's residents, who produce over $1 billion in goods annually via small-scale manufacturing and recycling. While the living conditions definitely appeared to be difficult, I was really encouraged to see how much income the residents were able to send back to support their families in rural areas.Beyond the slum, my team also toured many of Mumbai's iconic sights and took in the city's vibrant culture and contrasts. We even visited the Taj Hotel, a historic landmark that has hosted countless world leaders and celebrities over the years, but while the trip itself was incredibly meaningful and impactful for me, the weeks following my return were hard. I got sick for three weeks and had to coordinate two weddings, all while processing the lessons that I had learned in India.I am so excited to share more about how the trip transformed me in the next episode, so stay tuned! In This Episode[0:35] - Surprise! Jesse is interviewing me for this episode![2:50] - I share how I was reluctant to leave the family for such a long time even though I do love to travel.[4:52] - Even though I was hesitant and guilt-ridden, I ultimately accepted a last-minute India trip that I felt guided to take.[7:41] - I reflect on how I took the trip as a way of obeying God's calling even though I was afraid.[11:16] - Hear how I explored Mumbai’s vast slum and admired its people’s creativity, resilience, and relentless work ethic.[14:33] - I learned that the slum’s government sale probably benefits profit-driven elites and not the residents who are struggling.[16:56] - I really admired the workers’ pride and creativity despite harsh living conditions.[19:58] - Most of the workers in the slum were men supporting families back home in rural villages.[21:34] - I reflect on how Mumbai overwhelmed my senses with vibrant color, noise, and contrasting beauty and decay.[24:09] - Hear how I noticed stray and cared-for animals, reflecting both poverty and compassion.[26:02] - My final day mixed luxury and restraint as I savored Mumbai’s grandeur while staying mindful and humble.[29:36] - I talk about how I took strict precautions with food and water, relying mostly on safe, Western-style meals.[32:36] - Despite India’s tighter religious laws, the trip deepened my faith and also forged lasting friendships.[35:32] - I reflect on how, even though I was emotionally drained, I felt so uplifted by my team.[39:16] - After getting back home, I got sick and faced some challenges, but I trusted God.[40:31] - Reflecting on everything, I feel renewed, healed, and grateful.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

320: The Power of Prayer with Willa Kane
This episode features an interview with Willa Kane, co-author of the Eighth Day Prayers book series, and she shares the inspiring story of how this series unexpectedly came to be during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. She was spending time in Georgia when she received a text from a friend suggesting that they get friends and family to pray at 8 p.m. daily about the unfolding situation. Willa reached out to a few others, and within 24 hours, they had a website set up and 15,000 people around the world committed to join the daily prayer initiative. Even though she never intended for this to become a major project, over the next few years, it evolved into a series of three Eighth Day Prayers books.Listen in as Willa reveals how the name Eighth Day Prayers comes from the theological significance of the eighth day - the day of Christ's resurrection, representing a new creation. She explains how the liturgical calendar and focusing on God's word, rather than just the challenges of the times, was so important to the initiative's appeal and impact. She also reflects on how her background and life experiences, including a period of chronic illness in her 30s, prepared her for this unexpected calling, and she offers advice for busy women, suggesting that they start small by focusing on just a word or phrase from scripture that speaks to them each day rather than trying to take on especially long passages. The Eighth Day Prayers books are designed to be accessible, with content that can be read in just a few minutes. Willa encourages even skeptics to try it, believing that God will meet them there. As a grandmother of twelve, Willa also shares some insights into parenting and grandparenting, highlighting the importance of helping children discover how God has uniquely wired them. Willa's story is an inspiring example of how God can take a simple idea and turn it into a global movement, and I hope that you enjoy my conversation with her. If so, be sure to check out her books here!In This Episode[0:35] - Join me for this episode as I interview the co-author of the Eighth Day Prayers book series, Willa Kane![1:28] - We learn where the idea for the Eighth Day Prayers series originated.[3:11] - Hear how a spontaneous global prayer movement spread rapidly, drawing 15,000 participants![6:06] - Willa's creative, spiritual, and professional experiences came together perfectly for developing this project.[7:41] - Discover how personal hardship and spiritual symbolism around the number 8 inspired the Eighth Day Prayers title.[10:29] - Willa states that she views daily life and this project as gifts rooted in Jesus’ redemptive work.[11:40] - Following the liturgical calendar helps Willa see everyday seasons as reflections of Christ’s life.[14:33] - Listen as Willa encourages brief, reflective Bible reading as a daily conversation with God via prayer.[17:30] - Willa even encourages skeptics to try prayer briefly, trusting that God provides exactly what we need daily.[18:51] - Willa asserts that fulfillment comes from living as God designed us, not pursuing limitless ambition.[22:00] - Despite family chaos, Willa finds hope knowing that Jesus is the mediator in every story.[24:50] - Willa urges parents to pray intentionally for family values and unity across generations and marriages.[26:54] - Learn how Willa's Cousin Camp nurtures faith and family bonds via Scripture, prayer, and shared summer activities.[30:18] - We discover where to find Willa and her books online.[32:26] - I praise the Eighth Day Prayers books for being so accessible and guiding readers toward daily reflection and faith.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineEighth Day Prayers - WebsiteEighth Day Prayers - Website - Willa KaneBooksEighth Day Prayers - BooksSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Kristen shares her own personal story of feeling lonely and "desperate" to find friends when she moved to a new city with her military family, describing the strategies that she learned, including "show up, open up, pray up" (putting herself out there to meet new people, being vulnerable by inviting them into her home, and relying on prayer for guidance).Kristen highlights the importance of patience and persistence, noting that building deep friendships takes significant time and persistent effort, and she encourages listeners to get creative in finding opportunities to connect, whether through shared activities, volunteering, or simply running errands together. Kristen also cautions against the pitfalls of trying too hard or being overly needy in friendships, which can inadvertently push people away. Our conversation also touches upon the pain of friendship breakups and rejection, with Kristen offering empathy and advice for those who have been deeply hurt, suggesting that they rely on their faith, avoid bitterness, and have the courage to try again.Kristen shares how her own difficult friendship experiences ultimately helped her become a healthier, more confident friend, and she highlights the vital importance of community and the need for women to support and encourage one another. I highly recommend you get yourself a copy of her book Desperate Woman Seeks Friends as it is filled with practical wisdom and inspiration for anyone seeking more meaningful connections! In This Episode[0:35] - I introduce this episode’s focus on women’s struggles with friendship and welcome Kristen Strong![2:06] - Hear how Kristen nearly resorted to posting a “Desperate Woman Seeks Friends” sign before meeting her friend.[5:18] - I reflect on moving towns, feeling lonely, and realizing social media can complicate true connection.[7:44] - Online friendships often lack the vulnerability of real-life encounters.[9:09] - Kristen stresses “show up, open up, pray up” as keys for building lasting friendships.[12:12] - Hosting people at home fosters deeper bonds and aligns with God’s design.[15:12] - I emphasize initiating coffee invites, acknowledging that most attempts won’t lead to close friendships.[16:20] - Kristen reflects on having clicked instantly with Maria, proving treasured friendships can form even with full, busy lives.[19:12] - Kristen values blending friendship and routine tasks, leaving people feeling lighter and more encouraged afterward.[22:41] - We reflect on having once suffocated and/or overwhelmed friends in the past.[25:52] - By finding security in faith, Kristen became a healthier friend for others.[28:56] - Friendship breakups rarely reflect personal failure.[31:09] - Kristen sees rejection as God’s protection.[34:21] - I share how a breakup birthed growth, gratitude, and opportunities to love my former friend.[36:34] - Kristen warns bitterness can stunt healing, but softened hearts enrich future friendships and resilience.[39:39] - Kristen critiques throwaway culture and stresses grace, forgiveness, and cherishing supportive friendships.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksDesperate Woman Seeks Friends: Real Talk About Connection, Rejection, and Trying Again for the Friendships You Need by Kristen StrongSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

317: I Wish I Had a Bigger Kitchen with Kate Strickler
I am so thrilled to be joined this week by Kate Strickler, author of the new book I Just Wish I Had a Bigger Kitchen: And Other Lies I Think Will Make Me Happy. The book is brand new, and let me tell you - it’s exactly the kind of book we all need right now! Kate and I talk about the little stories that we tell ourselves, those “lies” that sneak into our marriages, our homes, and our friendships, and how they can so easily steal our joy.Listen in as we laugh about the quirks of daily life such as piles of toys on the floor or an unloaded dishwasher and how easy it is to build an entire story in our heads about why someone did or didn’t do something. Kate’s perspective is refreshingly practical, showing us how to give each other grace at home, communicate clearly, and focus on what really matters instead of trying to create a Pinterest-perfect life.We also get into her experience building Naptime Kitchen where she started sharing simple recipes during her baby’s naps and gradually grew it into a space full of real-life solutions for families. Her honesty about online life, friendships, and being seen authentically is something that truly resonates with me!We talk about how adult friendships often require intention, asking for help, and letting people support you, which can feel vulnerable but ultimately deepens connection, and Kate shares some practical tips for making your home work for you rather than stressing over appearances. She encourages us to embrace authenticity in marriage, parenting, and online spaces!By the end of our chat, I guarantee you that you will be laughing, reflecting, and maybe even inspired to lower your standards a little because life is meant to be lived, not staged, so if you are looking for a book that will make you feel seen, laugh out loud, and think differently about home, family, and friendships, grab a copy of Kate’s book and follow her online at Naptime Kitchen! In This Episode[0:35] - I welcome Kate Strickler, author of I Just Wish I Had a Bigger Kitchen, to the show![1:58] - Hear how Kate realized that being vulnerable online showed me others shared my struggles, making me feel less alone.[4:13] - Kate confidently chose relatable topics to show that struggles exist even in happy marriages.[7:29] - Marriage requires grace; Kate's spouse Nate leaving small messes isn’t personal but is just part of everyday life.[10:55] - Communicating openly about household messes helps prevent guilt.[13:16] - Kate views her home as adaptable, focusing on solutions that make it serve her family.[16:21] - I discuss how lowering expectations for cleanliness helps me manage a busy household without constant frustration.[19:50] - Hear how Kate's online presence grew gradually and how she aims to keep it inclusive, approachable, and accessible.[22:54] - Kate shares her authentic, everyday self online to avoid unrealistic public expectations.[24:47] - Kate explains why she craves honest, deep friendships rather than surface-level connections.[27:46] - I point out how understanding a friendship’s intentions sometimes feels even more uncertain than dating.[30:10] - Accepting friends’ support revealed how small gestures can deeply strengthen bonds.[33:05] - Kate recognizes that receiving help nurtures trust and enriches friendships.[35:58] - Embracing and expressing needs allows true connection.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineNaptime KitchenBooksI Just Wish I Had a Bigger Kitchen: And Other Lies I Think Will Make Me Happy by Kate StricklerSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

316: Why I Started Shutting Down at 7
Listen in this week as we do something a little bit different. Jesse interviews me! That’s right. I recently went on a retreat to Utah, and Jesse asks me questions all about it! I talk about my trip for a mastermind retreat with a group of women CEOs, a retreat focused on the theme of "flourishing" - exploring the gaps in their lives and how to move from areas that feel "dead or dying" to truly thriving.I talk about the various activities that we did, including an adventurous Jeep tour through the rugged Utah terrain that left us covered in dust! We also had intentional discussion times, including a "one question meal" where each person took turns sharing in response to a thought-provoking question. One of the biggest takeaways for me personally was the importance of creating more space in my life. I realized that I needed to be more intentional about shutting down work earlier in the evenings in order to be fully present with my family, and this has truly already made a noticeable difference in my energy and focus! The most impactful part of the retreat for me had to have been writing a letter to my future self, reflecting on the last five years of my life and envisioning how my new priorities will shape the next two years. I found myself very surprised by how much poured out as I wrote, feeling a sense of healing and clarity! Overall, this retreat provided me with valuable time for rest, reflection, and renewed intentionality around the areas of my life that matter most, and I am so excited to implement the changes that I identified and see the positive impact that they have, both personally and professionally! In This Episode[0:35] - Hear how I realized that my phone was under me the whole time as I searched for it![2:41] - My trip to Utah was one of three summer journeys.[4:09] - What was the purpose of my recent trip to Utah?[7:33] - I describe what the weather was like on my trip.[9:08] - I talk about how the Jeep ride was bumpy, dangerous, and beautiful but left me utterly uninterested in owning one.[11:41] - Hear how dust covered us so thoroughly that baby wipes revealed streaks of clean skin.[13:32] - Our dinner began with reflections on flourishing and times of feeling fully alive.[16:19] - I contrast empty success-chasing with the fulfillment of fostering and adoption.[18:31] - Hear how serving behind the scenes at church rekindled my lifelong joy in organizing meals.[20:40] - I cherished early nights and found healing in honest group sharing.[23:38] - Via journaling and discussion, I realized that my biggest gaps were sleep and marriage.[26:35] - Hear how I publicly committed to ending work by 7 p.m.[28:17] - Early shutdowns improved my sleep quality and made me more present in my marriage.[31:16] - Choosing “space” as my theme, I have delegated tasks and restructured priorities at home.[33:36] - Leaving space in my days has increased gratitude, connection, and joyful laughter![35:46] - I talk about how writing a future-focused letter brought healing reflection and clarity for the next two years.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

I have the honor this week of having not just one but two guests in the studio, both of whom I love dearly - David Thomas and Sissy Goff! David and Sissy discuss their new children's books focused on building resilience and courage in young kids. The books, featuring therapy dogs as the main characters, aim to help children with common challenges such as anxiety, fear, and emotional regulation.Listen as Sissy and David share how they have witnessed the powerful impact of therapy dogs in their counseling practice, helping kids open up and feel more comfortable expressing their feelings. They also discuss the scientific research showing the mental health benefits of interacting with dogs, including reduced stress and increased feel-good hormones. Our conversation explores how even very young children, as early as preschool age, can struggle with anxiety and fear that manifests in rigid behavior, meltdowns, and an inability to cope with change or big transitions. David and Sissy provide some practical strategies for parents, such as using "breath prayers" and feelings charts to help kids identify and work through their feelings.Highlighting the importance of building emotional intelligence from an early age, Sissy and David also reflect on some personal stories of how they've seen this make a profound difference, even in the lives of older kids who initially resisted. 314: Swimming with Dolphins and Stingrays
Listen this week as Jesse and I share an unscripted update on our family's recent travels and the start of the new school year! We talk about some of the changes to our kids' school schedules, with David now attending the afternoon preschool program instead of the morning which has worked out really nicely as it better suits his natural sleep and wake cycle. We then reflect on our recent fun trips - first, my visit to Orlando to attend a business retreat where I experienced the thrills of the Volcano Bay water park and the serene beauty of Discovery Cove. At Discovery Cove, the highlight was definitely swimming with dolphins, an experience that left a deep impression and even had me briefly considering a career change! Then, following the Orlando trip, our whole family spent a week at the lake with extended family, enjoying activities like boating, tubing, and water skiing. Jesse and I note that this was absolutely our best lake trip yet, with even the younger kids fully embracing and delighting in the water activities!Throughout this update, we highlight the importance of making time for play and new experiences, which we personally find so rejuvenating for the soul, especially amidst the busyness of daily life. 311: Changing My Mindset with Food
Today’s topic is a really vulnerable and honest one and I've been sort of hesitant to cover it. But while putting yourself out there like this is a little scary, it's been impacting my life so much that I wanted to share in hopes it might help and encourage someone else.In this episode, Jesse and I sit down and talk about my journey of changing my mindset around food and the major shifts that I have experienced in the last few weeks. I talk about why I signed up with a dietitian (it's fully covered by insurance for me and most people!) and what I thought I would get out of it and how it's completely not panned out like I thought!During my first session, I had some pretty big "a-ha" moments as the dietitian challenged some of my long-held beliefs. She asked me a lot of questions and then explained to me that in eating too few calories for years, especially while under immense physical and emotional stress, I have actually been hurting my body.I discuss how, over the following weeks, I really struggled to increase my calorie intake, as it felt like "too much food" after restricting for so long and I was scared. I went through a period of intense anxiety and stress as the weight didn't immediately come off, and I ultimately realized that I needed to break free from this unhealthy mindset and get rid of the scale altogether.I am now focusing on nourishing my body and listening to my hunger cues rather than obsessing over macros or calories. I have experienced a new freedom and energy, I'm working through and processing so much, and I hope to break this cycle for my kids and set an example of true health and wholeness! This is just the beginning of my journey, but I am so excited to continue to heal and share the process transparently! In This Episode[0:36] - I am discussing my as of yet unhealed struggles with food.[2:24] - Hear how I discovered a dietitian service covered through insurance, prompting some clarity around my health goals.[9:08] - Despite years of dieting, I couldn’t lose the last five pounds after my fourth pregnancy.[11:18] - Repeated dieting and surprise pregnancies left my body stressed and resistant to weight loss.[14:07] - Parenting, fostering, writing books, and business pressures overwhelmed me physically and emotionally.[17:46] - Realizing that my chronic stress and calorie deficit was damaging me, I began increasing my calorie intake.[20:00] - Although I was encouraged to eat more, I initially struggled emotionally when weight loss didn’t immediately follow.[21:27] - Hear how I realized that my unhealthy fixation on weight was an addictive, joyless pursuit of external validation.[24:17] - I reflect on how I clung to the scale for validation, not realizing how deeply it controlled my self-worth.[25:14] - Jesse and I discuss how I came to realize that true health isn’t about weight loss but about feeling nourished, energized, and balanced.[28:58] - I realized that my obsession with the scale was mentally and physically harming me.[31:37] - Not knowing my weight daily gave me relief and began to break toxic thought patterns.[33:30] - Hear how I replaced obsessive food tracking with photo-based check-ins, allowing space for more intuitive eating.[35:09] - Listening to my hunger cues and eating more gave me energy and modeled balance for my kids.[38:12] - I express gratitude for my dietitian helping me launch a healing journey.[40:13] - I now practice gratitude for my body’s function, rewiring thought patterns toward healing and self-love.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineMy Completely Honest Experience With NourishNourish - Hire a Registered Dietitian for $0 Out of Pocket!Social MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Katie shares how she felt called by God to write this study, even though it took years to come to fruition, and she explains how Deborah's story has personally impacted her, especially in finding the balance between not shrinking back but also not steamrolling others. Katie highlights the importance of maintaining a close relationship with God, relying on His strength rather than our own, and being willing to step out in faith even when the path ahead is uncertain. Our conversation touches on the challenges of discerning God's calling, the power of prayer, and the value of community, with Katie encouraging listeners to approach the Bible study with an open heart, taking time to truly digest the lessons rather than rushing through. She also highlights key takeaways from Deborah's life, such as her godly confidence and collaborative spirit.Katie truly provides a compelling overview of what readers can expect to find in God, What Do I Do?, and her insights offer a timely message for taking on life's unexpected twists and turns by drawing near to God and leaning on His guidance. [27:12] - Simple prayers still carry power and deepen our relationship with God.[28:56] - Inviting God into daily moments, even small ones, opens the door to His power.[31:58] - Katie realized that true strength begins when we stop striving and fully depend on God's sufficiency.[34:34] - Naming your spiritual obstacles invites God's power to free, heal, and transform from within.[36:56] - I discuss how chronic stress often signals self-reliance rather than true rest in God.[39:19] - Deborah’s legacy showed Katie the power of godly confidence paired with intentional collaboration. 309: Your Waiting Isn’t Wasted with DawnChere Wilkerson
I have truly been looking forward to this conversation with Dawnchere Wilkerson! Author of the book Slow Burn: The Work and Wonder of the Wait, I was so deeply inspired after reading it that I knew that I had to have her on the show. Her story of waiting through eight years of infertility and the profound transformation that took place in her heart during that time is incredibly powerful and encouraging.DawnChere shares so many gems of wisdom that I know will resonate with anyone who is in a season of waiting and wondering if their story will ever unfold the way that they hope, and she discusses how waiting is not just a season but a way of life - and that the key is learning to truly live in the wait, rather than just passively enduring it.One of the biggest breakthroughs for DawnChere was realizing her identity as a beloved daughter of God. When she grasped how deeply she is loved and accepted by her heavenly father, it gave her the confidence to live with faith and open arms even in the midst of her unreached goals. She didn't have to wait to be fulfilled or at peace because she could experience that fullness in the present. DawnChere also highlights the value of community and not isolating ourselves when we're in a hard season, sharing how investing in relationships, even when it's difficult, is where so much of our faith gets strengthened and our perspective gets broadened. If you're in a waiting period of your own, I just know that DawnChere's story and insights will encourage you to see this season as an opportunity for transformation, rather than just an obstacle to get through. Her book is a beautiful invitation to trust the timing and find joy in the journey, even when the outcome is still uncertain. In This Episode[0:35] - I enthusiastically welcome the author of the book Slow Burn, DawnChere Wilkerson, to the show![2:00] - DawnChere has found that waiting is a lifelong journey in which purpose and transformation happen in the present.[4:58] - Answered prayers bring greater responsibility, which requires deeper trust, wisdom, and surrendering daily.[6:26] - DawnChere reveals that true strength came not from willpower but from surrendering to God and reaching out.[9:30] - Discovering her identity as God's daughter gave DawnChere confidence to trust and live boldly.[12:31] - DawnChere reveals that believing that she is loved by God helps silence self-doubt and recognize daily grace and support.[14:08] - A generous life widens your world, connecting faith and growth through meaningful community.[16:39] - DawnChere believes that community offers a new perspective, reminding us that there's more beyond what we currently see.[19:30] - DawnChere argues that true friendship requires time, sacrifice, and grace.[22:11] - Casual conversations can still carry divine impact, offering unexpected wisdom exactly when we need it.[25:22] - Supportive friendships are a vital, irreplaceable part of life.[27:22] - It’s important to not give up on community because authentic friendships require effort, patience, and continued pursuit.[30:44] - Surrendering control to God brings peace, deepens faith, and strengthens friendships.[33:24] - Seasons of waiting and hardship can ultimately transform you and lead to unexpected, meaningful blessings. 308: My Very First Time Going to a Gym Class
I honestly never thought that I would be recording a podcast episode about this, but join Jesse and I this week as I share how I started going to gym classes for the first time in my life! It all started when my friend Kate told me about a gym in our area that offers free childcare. Jesse and I signed up, thinking that we could just use the childcare and work while the kids were taken care of. After all, the childcare alone made the cost worth it.However, when it was suggested that I should take a gym class myself, I was initially completely against the idea. It truly scared me. After all, I had had a traumatic experience in PE as a young girl, where I was always the one who couldn't do the exercises and felt so embarrassed. I carried that shame with me for decades, but I ultimately decided that I needed to face that fear. I told the internet that I was going to do it, which helped hold me accountable.Walking through that door for the first class was definitely the hardest part, but the instructor was so kind and encouraging, helping me feel comfortable as a total beginner, and something amazing happened; I kept going back, week after week. I've even started making "gym friends" and look forward to the classes. It has been so incredibly empowering to push past this fear that's held me back for so long!Of course, it hasn't been without some embarrassing moments, like the time I had a little accident during an intense workout (listen in for those details!), but I am learning and growing through it all. This experience has made me realize how many other areas of my life that I have avoided due to fears and insecurities from my past, and I am so glad I didn't let that stop me this time. I hope my story will inspire you to identify things that scare you and help you find the courage to take that first step in facing them! You never know what good could come from conquering a fear! In This Episode [0:35] - Jesse and I are talking today about how I recently did something I never thought that I would do - join a gym class! [3:33] - We initially joined the gym for childcare, but a tiny nudge led me to try a class. [6:55] - I reflect on how childhood gym class failures left me feeling humiliated, inferior, and determined to never repeat it. [9:42] - Jesse notes that proper coaching could have reframed my struggles as growth, not lifelong self-judgment. [10:23] - Hear how I began replacing old shame with courage, embracing things that once terrified me. [13:20] - To help hold myself accountable, I told the internet and asked one of our daughters to go with me for moral support. [15:34] - Hear how I chose a beginner class, asked for help, and felt welcomed by a kind instructor. [18:21] - Conquering my fear, I now attend regularly and look forward to it! [21:33] - I discuss how the instructor’s kindness and nonjudgmental attitude helped me rediscover confidence and encourage others. [24:48] - I really appreciate the inclusive, non-competitive environment! [26:55] - Hear about a little accident that I had during an intense class, hoping that others didn't notice. [29:36] - I stealthily exited the gym, horrified to find the evidence painfully visible and unforgettable. [31:38] - Jesse reminded listeners to stay clean and emphasizes that gym mishaps happen more often than people realize. [33:09] - I invite listeners to reflect on their own fears and take one bold, courageous step forward this week! 307: How to Fight Less and Thrive More in Marriage (with Gabe and Rebekah Lyons)
This book we are talking about today is so authentic and vulnerable and I really appreciated the authors being willing to open up like they did. In their new book The Fight for Us: Overcome What Divides to Build a Marriage That Thrives, Rebekah and Gabe Lyons share their personal journey of overcoming challenges in their marriage, discussing how writing the book together was a vulnerable process that forced them to confront their own issues and communication problems.Join me as Rebekah and Gabe highlight how early trials in their marriage -- such as having a child with Down Syndrome -- could have torn them apart but instead brought them closer together. They stress the importance of leaning on and supporting each other during difficult times rather than retreating. The Fight for Us explores the "four dysfunctional dances" couples can find themselves in - avoidant, anxious, silent, and intense - and offers readers some guidance on how to recognize and break out of these unhealthy patterns.A key theme that we discuss is the need to look inward and take responsibility for our own contributions to marital problems, rather than automatically putting all of the blame on the spouse. Rebekah and Gabe encourage couples to better understand how past experiences shape their current behaviors and reactions, and they share how this self-reflection has been so integral to strengthening their own marriage over nearly three decades.Throughout our conversation, the Lyons are refreshingly honest about their own struggles, missteps, and growth, highlighting that even strong, long-term marriages require constant work, structure, and recommitment, especially during major life transitions. The Fight for Us offers practical tips for prioritizing the relationship and creating the emotional safety needed for vulnerable conversations – a relatable resource that I highly recommend grabbing a copy of!In This Episode[0:35] - I am excited to welcome Rebekah and Gabe Lyons, authors of The Fight for Us, to the show![1:59] - For Rebekah and Gabe, sharing their story via writing deepened their healing, clarity, faith, and connection as a couple.[4:43] - Gabe and Rebekah chose to face hardship together, building resilience via community and shared commitment.[6:15] - We hear how Rebekah and Gabe leaned on each other when their son's diagnosis changed so much for them.[8:11] - Gabe stresses looking inward rather than blaming your partner, while Rebekah stresses communicating hurt without automatically assuming harmful intent.[11:14] - Hear how the book identifies four conflict patterns in couples, urging awareness for deeper emotional connection.[14:43] - Despite initial incompatibility, the Lyons’ marriage succeeded via humility, growth, and choosing to fight together.[16:12] - Learn how vulnerability and honest conversation helped the Lyons push through hopelessness instead of giving up.[18:04] - Emotional safety ultimately requires mutual commitment and honesty, or vulnerability becomes difficult.[21:29] - Understanding generational patterns clarified Gabe’s and Rebekah’s roles and helped them redefine emotional and parental expectations.[23:46] - Reflecting on past wounds taught Gabe how vulnerability can lead to deeper connection in marriage.[26:07] - Rebekah argues that every stage of life brings fresh conflict but that awareness and honesty help couples navigate it better.[27:45] - Gabe has realized that, instead of fixing emotions, men must learn to validate their partner’s pain with empathy.[30:14] - Rebekah reflects on how saying yes to too much nearly cost them their intimacy, forcing them to reprioritize.[32:24] - Gabe argues that healthy marriages require structure, planning, and dreaming, even if it feels unromantic at first.[34:13] - Hear how a calendar audit helped the Lyons prioritize connection and value relationships over material things.[36:48] - Kids tend to feel safer when parents nurture joy and connection away from daily responsibilities.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBooksThe Fight for Us: Overcome What Divides to Build a Marriage That Thrives by Rebekah Lyons & Gabe LyonsSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

306: Our 20-Hour Overnight Getaway
Jesse and I recently had the chance to sneak away for a quick 20-hour overnight trip, and it ended up being exactly what we needed. With our busy schedules and the constant demands of parenting six kids, it's rare that we get uninterrupted time to truly connect and plan for the future, and this short getaway allowed us to do just that! Before we even left, we sat down and made a list of the key things that we wanted to accomplish - reviewing our goals, talking through some challenges we've been facing, and trying to map out what the next nine months might look like for our family (a time frame that, for the record, has nothing to do with pregnancy). Having that plan in place helped us make the most of our limited time away, having begun the trip by enjoying a nice dinner out, which gave us the space to have those important conversations.Listen in as we share the story, including how, the following morning, we headed to a local coffee shop (where we ran into several friends, much to my embarrassment since I hadn't even brushed my hair!), and over coffee, we were able to dive deeper into the practical steps we want to take to build our business around our family life and not the other way around. It was truly amazing how much we were able to accomplish in just 20 hours. We came back feeling refreshed, reconnected, and motivated.I feel so grateful that we didn't allow the short timeframe to hold us back, and this episode of the show will hopefully help remind you that sometimes you have to get creative to nurture your marriage, even if you can't take a full weekend away. I would, as always, love to hear from you! Reach out to let me know about how you have found ways to prioritize your relationship, even in the midst of busy seasons. What tips do you have for making the most of limited time together? I'm always looking for new ideas! In This Episode[00:35] - We have some exciting news to share - Silas now has a driver’s license![03:13] - Getting his license helps simplify managing Silas’s jam-packed schedule of sports, friends, and constant movement.[05:32] - We discuss how, after a delay for insurance, Silas safely drove alone and proved himself a careful driver.[07:23] - Hear how I researched DMV strategies and chose the best day and time to avoid long waits.[10:22] - I reveal that arriving early on Tuesday paid off, with fast DMV service and successful ID and license processing![13:33] - I talk about having to adhere to strict photo rules to renew my passport and hope to be fully licensed soon.[14:54] - We talk about our recent short getaway which offered meaningful reconnection and some much-needed rest.[16:15] - Hear how we created a written plan to stay focused without letting the time feel like work.[18:33] - Planning an ABC date night brought structure, clarity, and joy to our short getaway![21:03] - We discussed nine-month goals which will help us prioritize needs and communicate more clearly as a couple.[23:27] - Jesse and I discuss how people so often prioritize work over life, sacrificing needs and identity in a work-centered society.[25:50] - I am aiming to shift from overworking toward building business around life, not the other way around.[28:13] - With all six kids in school soon, we discussed how to use our new free time.[30:39] - We reflect on how caretaking responsibilities for David lingered on our trip, but we did finally get some restful sleep.[33:22] - Even though our time away was limited, we set goals, made a plan, and truly reconnected.[35:59] - I strongly encourage intentional living, not “balance,” and I invite listeners to share marriage and work-life strategies!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

305: The Devil’s Subtle Strategies: What We Miss When We’re Distracted (with Tilly Dillehay)
So many of you have told me you loved Tilly's clever and quirky new book My Dear Hemlock, a book written in the voice of a demon mentor coaching her underling on how to derail a Christian woman’s walk with God. Taking inspiration from The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, Tilly’s version is tailored to the specific struggles that Christian women face today - frustration in marriage, social media distractions, pride disguised as virtue, and the slow drift that can happen in daily family life.We talked about how the fictional format of the book gave Tilly room to say the hard things that are so easy to sidestep when we’re just trying to get through the week. She shares what it means to see homemaking not as a list of chores but as a sort of battleground on which small choices have big consequences. We also explore the temptation to fixate on a spouse’s flaws instead of tending to our own spiritual health as well as why that is so spiritually dangerous.Tilly doesn’t just offer observations; she imparts deeply practical wisdom, things like how to build upon gratitude when your first impulse is annoyance, how to recognize when the enemy is whispering half-truths, and why community and prayer aren’t just helpful but essential. This episode will be sure to challenge you, encourage you, and make you think twice the next time that you scroll through Instagram or silently stew over a spouse's mistake. In This Episode[0:36] - I welcome Tilly Dillehay, author of My Dear Hemlock, to the podcast for this episode![1:15] - Tilly reveals how the book came to fruition.[3:30] - Hear how writing a fictional book helped Tilly express real-life marital struggles and spiritual challenges that Christian women face.[6:03] - Although not from a charismatic tradition, Tilly finds value in acknowledging Satan’s real influence.[7:28] - I stress how small annoyances are spiritual battlegrounds on which we choose our response.[10:57] - Women's imaginative power can harm relationships if misused as criticism instead of praise.[12:07] - I warn against magnifying minor flaws in loved ones.[14:08] - Tilly advises cultivating daily gratitude instead of scrutinizing a spouse’s faith.[17:29] - By gently initiating nightly prayer, it's created deeper connection and communication in marriage.[18:34] - Many marriages unfortunately fall apart from unspoken contempt that could’ve been avoided with small, daily kindnesses.[21:34] - I point out how the media distorts women’s expectations and how prayer often gets derailed by distracting thoughts.[22:30] - Tilly suggests praying with others and using scripture as structure for focused prayer.[25:02] - Instead of promising prayer and then forgetting, Tilly prefers to pray immediately and let people know that she just did.[28:36] - Tilly disabled Safari on her phone entirely because phones are ultimately designed to steal time.[30:37] - Distractions vary per person; mine was audio, while a friend’s was compulsive online shopping.[32:24] - Tilly asserts that homes are spiritual battlegrounds and that women play a key role in their power.[35:55] - Tilly advises beginning with prayer and learning from godly women whose homes reflect familial, not material, richness.[36:54] - Neglecting prayer and community can ultimately open the door to spiritual vulnerability.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineTilly Dillehay’s Home Fires PodcastBooksMy Dear Hemlock by Tilly DillehayThe Screwtape Letters by C.S. 304: Marriage License Mayhem: Our Wild Ride Trying to Get a Real ID License
We had to sit down and recount this story since it sort of went viral on Instagram and I got thousands of messages and comments and emails about it!A few weeks ago, we accidentally stumbled across something totally unexpected – that we may not have actually been legally married for the past 22 years! That's right! Listen in as Jesse and I fill you in!It all started with a passport - or rather, the lack of a current one. I was prepping for a trip to Colorado Springs for some filming and radio interviews when we realized that my passport had expired and that the window to renew it was way too tight. The backup plan was to try to get a Real ID, which turned into a long, chaotic day at the DMV, but the DMV line wasn’t even the wildest part. While confidently presenting my organized folder of documents (thanks to Jesse), I was told that our marriage license wasn’t valid because it wasn’t the right kind. Apparently, what we’ve had all these years was just the signed license from our wedding, not the certified marriage certificate with the state seal. We had used that same document to change my name, get a driver’s license, even get passports, but now, we weren’t so sure someone ever mailed the signed license back after our wedding like we were supposed to.The more we pieced it together, the more we realized what had actually happened, and we hope that you'll join as we walk you through this hilarious story of minor panic and the weird legal questions that come along with the realization that you might not actually be legally married... more than two decades after the wedding! In This Episode[2:24] - Jesse and I are sharing how we recently discovered that our marriage of 22 years might not have been legally recognized![3:37] - I nearly missed a trip due to delays getting a Real ID required for flying.[6:43] - A week before traveling, I found that my passport hadn't been renewed like she had believed.[8:44] - I realized that there was unfortunately no way to get my passport renewed in time for my trip, meaning that I had to get a Real ID.[10:53] - Despite an estimated 15-minute wait time, I actually spent nearly two hours just to reach the DMV desk.[14:05] - Hear how DMV staff revealed that our marriage license wasn’t valid without an official state seal.[18:04] - Jesse realized that we likely never filed the marriage license, so no certificate was ever issued.[18:45] - I began to worry that Jesse and I were never legally married due to paperwork mishandling.[20:32] - Hear how we anxiously submitted an expedited request, unsure if Kansas even had our marriage certificate.[22:15] - I came to realize that many other people have also mistaken a license copy for a valid marriage certificate.[24:35] - Hear how we learned that there's a difference between a marriage license and a certificate with a raised seal.[27:20] - The official certificate finally arrived, relieving us and allowing me to finally apply for my Real ID.[29:52] - I found it funny that this rare paperwork error came from Jesse, since he is usually the more detail-oriented one!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Their approach isn’t about perfecting your partner or expecting them to "fix" your emotional triggers but rather about learning how to heal and grow together.Listen in as we talk about the importance of small daily moments and how a simple interaction, like how we deal with frustration or small disagreements, can either draw us closer or create distance. They, for example, share some powerful insights into their own struggles with emotional dysregulation and how it often leads to disconnection, but it isn't just about avoiding the pitfalls. It’s also about learning how to show up as emotionally healthy individuals and what it takes to keep the relationship itself thriving!Hear how Joanna and Matthew learned to handle some tough topics like finances and how taking a step back to understand each other’s emotional states can truly transform conversations. 302. An Invitation to Behold Christ in Motherhood (with Whitney Newby)
I am so excited to be joined this week by Whitney Newby for an episode that is perfectly timed to be released before Mother’s Day! Whitney is the author of the book Lift Your Eyes: Daily Invitations to Behold Christ in Motherhood, and I have long admired her heart for motherhood. Her new book brims with the kind of grounded and graceful encouragement that so many of us desperately need when we are in the thick of it - tired, anxious, stretched thin, or even just quietly wondering if we’re doing anything right. We talk about what it means to see motherhood not as a detour from a more “important” purpose but as the exact work that we have been called to in this season. Whitney shares how her early postpartum challenges taught her dependence on God in a whole new way and how even something as simple as changing her response from “What?” to “Yes, love” transformed the atmosphere of her home. These are all truly just lived experiences, real shifts that she has made in the messiness of everyday life, and it’s these small choices that she says have shaped her most profoundly.Tune in to hear Whitney and I talk about anxiety, identity, and the constant pressure to “fill our cups.” Whitney’s stories and insights definitely are not sugar-coated, but they are soaked in truth and gentleness, so if you are in a season where the needs feel never-ending, your patience is paper-thin, and/or you're wondering how you’re supposed to keep going, this episode is for you, and definitely be sure to grab a copy of Lift Your Eyes!In This Episode[0:35] - This episode’s guest is the author of the book Lift Your Eyes, Whitney Newby![2:12] - Hear how motherhood has grown Whitney's faith, teaching her to trust God more than her own control.[5:50] - Whitney learned as a nurse that saying “I have time” builds deep connections with both patients and children when busy.[7:52] - Whitney feels that even being present with her kids for ten minutes can create lasting memories.[10:43] - True strength in motherhood doesn't come from cultural comforts or self-reliance.[12:38] - Praying with Jesse in weakness has revealed God's power to multiply emotional scarcity.[14:48] - Hear how Changing a snappy “What?” to a gentler “Yes, love?” has transformed Whitney's home atmosphere.[17:35] - Whitney believes that moms shape their homes' emotional climates.[20:33] - I really like the title of Whitney's book and cherish the image of lifting our eyes to God when experiencing overwhelming daily challenges.[21:15] - Whitney reveals that, in chaotic seasons, she connects with God through audio Bibles and quick “flare prayers.”[24:36] - We discover how Whitney added minimal watercolor art to her book to visually reflect calm and spiritual beauty.[26:01] - Hear about Whitney’s business Brighter Day Press.[28:39] - I value Whitney’s generosity, humor, and authenticity, calling her book a peaceful gift for mothers that listeners should read!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineBrighter Day PressBooksLift Your Eyes: Daily Invitations to Behold Christ in Motherhood by Whitney NewbySocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

301. The Hard Truths We've Learned From a Month of Using the Opal App
If, like me, you have ever told yourself, “Tonight, I will put my phone away by 8 p.m.,” only to find yourself two hours later mindlessly scrolling through TikTok, then you will probably feel seen in this episode, and I am sharing something that has made a huge difference for both Jesse and me: the Opal app. This app has really helped me set real boundaries with my phone… and actually stick to them. Jesse and I talk about how Opal helped me finally break a pattern I didn’t even realize had such a grip on my evenings and how reclaiming that time has changed way more than I even expected! We’re talking about better sleep, better connection with each other, a tidier house, and a return to things I actually love, like reading fiction instead of just perusing strangers’ Instagram posts!I also get honest about the struggles that I had at first (because setting boundaries with your phone sounds simple, but if it were that easy, we'd all be doing it already)! I share what worked, what surprised me, and why the goal isn’t perfection but awareness and choice, so if you are feeling like your evenings (or your whole day) keep slipping away one scroll at a time, this might give you some ideas! In This Episode[0:35] - Despite my plan to use my phone only as a landline after 8 p.m., I found that I lacked that willpower and needed additional help.[3:33] - I ended up downloading the Opal app to curb late-night scrolling.[6:17] - I explain that I set Opal to block social media apps nightly without any ability to override it.[8:56] - After some trial and error, I managed to customize Opal’s settings to avoid emergencies but still stay disciplined.[10:28] - Jesse notes that he has become more present and attentive at night after installing the Opal app.[11:12] - Hear how I realized that I could meet my work goals while limiting app use to three hours.[12:27] - Mindfully limiting phone use helped Jesse break habits of mindless scrolling.[13:20] - Choosing to read fiction at night instead of scrolling has revived so much joy and fulfillment for me.[14:38] - Without nighttime phone distractions, I also now get better sleep and feel more productive each day.[17:09] - I explain how shutting down apps early has improved our home organization, marriage, and overall sense of presence.[19:54] - Seeing how much of my lifetime I'd waste on my phone really gave me a huge wake-up call!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineOpal AppBooksLittle House on the Prairie (book series) by Laura Ingalls WilderThe Frozen River by Ariel LawhonSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

300. When You Feel Underestimated (with Mary Marantz)
Welcome to the 300th episode of The Crystal Paine Show! Joining me this week is Mary Marantz, author of several books including her newest, Underestimated: The Surprisingly Simple Shift to Quit Playing Small, Name the Fear, and Move Forward Anyway. This conversation is raw, honest, and deeply personal one, and in Underestimated, Mary explores how to stop playing small and move past the fear that holds us back, a message that resonated so much with me as I read the book.We talk about how Mary's childhood in a rundown trailer in rural West Virginia shaped her journey, including how she overcame immense insecurity and the fear of failure, only to find herself still grappling with feelings of inadequacy after achieving what seemed like the pinnacle of success. You’ll hear about her struggles with perfectionism, how she used it as a way to prove herself, and how she’s learning to let go of that.Mary’s openness about her own fears, especially about being unlovable after succeeding, is a reminder how easy it is to let fear's voice be so loud that it cripples us from taking action. And then we miss out on so many gifts and blessings and the fulfillment and strength that comes from not letting fear win. This episode of the show is a beautiful reminder to let go of the armor that we often wear and start showing up authentically, trusting that our worth isn’t defined by how small we started or how much we have accomplished. Listen in for an empowering conversation about stepping into who we are meant to be, even when it feels scary, and be sure to grab a copy of Mary's new book!In This Episode[0:35] - I felt deeply connected to Mary's introduction to her new book.[1:56] - Mary believes that being overlooked fosters empathy, shaping us into people who truly see others.[5:45] - Mary grew up in poverty and still wrestles with defining herself beyond the underdog narrative.[8:27] - Purpose outweighs proving others wrong.[9:59] - Fearing failure, Mary nearly skipped applying to Yale until a friend intervened and believed in her.[12:06] - Trying to mask insecurity with achievements.[15:02] - Mary used perfectionism as an armor, trying to prove her worth after her mother's abandonment.[18:35] - In striving to need no one, Mary ended up becoming isolated and heartbroken by her walls.[20:40] - Fear of failure can come from the pressure to always be the one who comes through.[23:07] - Mary asserts that those who lack true passion aren't afraid, but creatives fear whether their work will matter.[25:13] - Naming fear’s predictable patterns weakens its power![28:03] - I explain how facing fear in tough situations builds courage, preparing us for challenges in the future.[30:24] - As is scientifically supported, the brain predicts outcomes based on past experiences, but doing difficult things can reshape this.[33:17] - I express admiration for Mary’s gift for words in her book.[36:08] - Mary explains the five achiever types and invites listeners to take her free quiz online![39:28] - I applaud Mary’s perseverance and encourage others to read her work!Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineMary MarantzAchieverQuiz.comNametheFear.comMary Marantz on Instagram (@marymarantz)BooksDirt: Growing Strong Roots in What Makes the Broken Beautiful by Mary MarantzSlow Growth Equals Strong Roots: Finding Grace, Freedom, and Purpose in an Overachieving World by Mary MarantzUnderestimated: The Surprisingly Simple Shift to Quit Playing Small, Name the Fear, and Move Forward Anyway by Mary MarantzSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

299. The 5 Money Beliefs That Shape a Teen’s Financial Future
Jesse and I are back in the studio this week together to talk all about raising financially confident teens, I have personally seen firsthand how a few key mindset shifts can totally change the game, not just for them but for the entire family dynamicIn this episode, we are unpacking five powerful money mindsets that can shape your teen’s relationship with money in ways that last far beyond high school! These aren’t just fluffy theories or one-size-fits-all strategies. We’re talking about practical shifts - some that may even challenge how you think about money!Tune in as I get into why a $20 hoodie "costs" more than $20 (and how that concept can seriously shift your teen’s thinking), why giving your kid everything might actually rob them of future success, and how the most valuable lessons often come from small mistakes. We also take a look at why compound interest isn’t just a boring math concept but one of the most exciting opportunities your teen can tap into if they understand it early enough.Jesse and I explore how creativity and contentment can become your teen’s financial superpowers and how you can help them develop those strengths without a single lecture. I’m also sharing a brand-new resource called The One Hour Budget for Teens, along with a freebie packed with 15 essential financial skills every teen should know, so if you have ever wondered how to raise a teen who is smart with money and not just good at spending it, then this episode is definitely for you!In This Episode[0:35] - Jesse and I are discussing talking to kids early about money, building lasting habits.[3:25] - Teaching kids to earn purchases shows them that money equals effort and thoughtful decisions.[5:33] - Jesse argues that teens shouldn't be taught to equate money solely with hours worked.[6:37] - It's important to show kids the value of long-term gains by discussing investments and risk vs. reward.[9:06] - I add that living below your means sets teens up for financial independence and effective budgeting.[12:41] - Jesse points out that failures are learning opportunities that often teach us more than successes do.[13:13] - I encourage allowing kids to make financial mistakes because they’ll gain lasting wisdom from the experience.[16:04] - I warn about online scams and introduce a fun, teen-friendly budgeting guide.[19:07] - Initiate financial talks with teens via shared activities and honest but non-judgmental conversations.[22:53] - I argue that excuses only delay progress, so start managing what you have now, even if it’s only $30.[25:37] - Contentment now is key to lasting financial peace and success.[28:32] - Removing screen time and ads has helped our son become more motivated to earn.[30:11] - I have realized that buying more can’t fix deeper issues that only contentment can address.[33:42] - Go to my store to download The One-Hour Budget for Teens, using the code TEENS at checkout!Links & ResourcesCrystal Paine15 Financial Skills for Teens FreebieThe One-Hour Budget for Teens (Use code TEENS at checkout!)Social MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

297. My Honest Experience With Function Health
This week, Jesse and I dive into an much-requested topic - my recent experience with getting blood tests done through Function Health. In this episode, we compare my experience with Function with my experience with InsideTracker. I loved that Function Health didn’t just give me numbers; it actually provided detailed, personalized recommendations, including the top foods and supplements which I should focus on. I also really appreciated the way that they communicated, reminding me of important prep steps like fasting and exercise restrictions before doing my tests. One of the most interesting parts is definitely the internal age assessment. (Let’s just say that the results made my day!) Beyond that, though, I found myself very impressed by how comprehensive the testing was - two rounds of bloodwork, deeper insights into key health markers, and clear explanations of what my results actually meant (including which areas needed attention ASAP)!Jesse even found a way to integrate my Function Health results into my InsideTracker app, which gave me a cool side-by-side comparison of my health trends over time.If you have ever considered a blood testing service (or if you have tried one before and weren’t too sure if it was worth it), then this episode will give you an inside look at my experience. As always, I would really love to hear from you! Have you tried Function Health, InsideTracker, or something similar? Send me an email at [email protected], and let’s compare notes! In This Episode[0:35] - I discuss my experience with Function Health's blood testing and am comparing it to InsideTracker.[2:04] - High school baseball games differ from middle school -- much longer and apparently with extra innings![4:24] - Managing kids at baseball games is challenging, but this year feels easier than last.[7:57] - Kathrynne and I had a relaxing, bonding trip to Isle of Palms over spring break.[10:28] - Function Health provided me with extensive health testing, offering a lot of add-on options.[13:04] - I found the $499 Function test affordable, detailed, and easily scheduled via local labs.[16:15] - The two rounds of testing help ensure accuracy by accounting for dietary and lifestyle factors.[18:22] - Function Health provides ongoing health tracking with personalized recommendations.[20:06] - Function Health's communication and reminders were better than InsideTracker's, keeping me well-prepared.[22:17] - The final results included doctor-reviewed insights, prioritized health concerns, and custom dietary recommendations.[24:51] - I was somewhat surprised that they so highly recommended magnesium -- but it makes sense![27:16] - I usually avoid using apps but appreciate Function Health’s communication despite being a newer company.[30:19] - I find it encouraging that I already limit certain foods, and Jesse and I discuss dietary recommendations.[33:44] - Function Health testing has grown more popular, although InsideTracker offers a more structured membership.[36:08] - I explain why I prefer Function Health over InsideTracker.[38:06] - I question how internal age results are determined, as I note discrepancies in different tests.[39:32] - Jesse plans to take the test next, and I encourage listeners to prioritize their health.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineFunction HealthInsideTrackerSocial MediaCrystal Paine on Instagram (@moneysavingmom)Crystal Paine on Instagram (@crystaliscleaning)Crystal Paine on LinkedInCrystal Paine on TwitterCrystal Paine on GoodreadsMoney Saving MomMoney Saving Mom on FacebookMoney Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook [email protected] Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
