The scope of sadness is large and it moves unexpectedly in the most random moments. This Luvjonez produced verse scratches the surface of a marketing dynamic that many activists and community servants face. Navigating the media's bright side, which is to shine light on the good works you're doing in hopes of empowering others to serve, with the media's dark side which often misrepresents people of color and exacerbates racial stereotypes. I decided to broach this topic in this series because messaging is so important in galvanizing people around causes and movements. Not being led by electing the candidate we love, but driven to remove the candidate we hate. Emotionally, where do we draw the line? Do we hold certain establishments accountable by not giving them our vote and teaching them a lesson in the long run? Do we sacrifice another 4 years of decimating inner city communities equitable policies because the candidate we wanted isn't in the race? What do we do? In my opinion we can't waste another 4 years! On this verse I touch on the complicated history of trying to maintain, move forward, and power through the conditions of systemic oppression and the path towards progress. Jeff Blake was a quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals who had a lot of success in his career throwing touchdowns to Bengals’ receiver Carl Pickens.. Amiri Baraka, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Langston Hughes and many others are passing their legacies down through artists and activist like Hannah to continue the fight! We are in an era of strong women who are leading the movement against social injustice and inequity! But these queens will be the first to tell you that you can’t see where you’re going until you know where you’ve been! We are all standing on the shoulders of the ancestors that came before us! For Day/Verse 26 of “16 Bars For Breonna”, I’m dropping the Quay Bailey produced verse “Standing On The Shoulders of Ida B.”!

The assault on women of color date back centuries... After touching on the early days of slavery & Reconstruction this week, in today’s verse, I talk about the challenges and the opportunities to empower, that black women experienced during Jim Crow. Thank you Quay Bailey for the incredible soundscape!

Again, my vibe this week is chronicling the progression of black women from slavery to current day. Day/Verse 24 (produced by Quay Bailey) I get into the “Recontruction” period a bit.. A time when black women sought to reclaim their body and image after centuries of rape and sexual abuse from their overseers and masters. I also explored the impact that segregation had on the relationship between black men and women.

Again, my vibe this week is chronicling the progression of black women from slavery to current day. One of the more diluted parts of early slavery, in regards to how it is taught in the schools, is the sexual abuse and exploitation of female slaves. Day/Verse 23 (produced by Quay Bailey) I get into that dynamic as much as I can within 16 bars. Many women were forced to succumb to the sexual desires of their overseers and slave masters in order to stay alive. However, like Celia of Missouri, many slave women fought back against sexual oppression, as they'd rather face death than to continue have their temple degraded by Satan's human manifestation. I believe that part of the psychological strategy in white supremacy is to only teach the submissive reactions of some slaves while downplaying the rebellious reactions of slaves. Liberation came in many forms and facets and we must not forget all the elements in which it took for our people to reach it!

As we enter week 4 of our daily #16BarsForBreonna series, I wanted to lay some ground work on the impact that slavery has had on the vulnerability that balck women are left with it 2020, while also highlighting the uncanny fight that resides in our queens when facing the most dehumanizing odds imaginable. This week, my brother Quay Bailey aka DJ Well Blended donated soundscapes for me to use to try and conceptualize the progression of African American women from slavery to current day, despite being the most unprotected persons on Earth. I pray this is my last week of having to do these... Please continue to find unique, inspiring, and informative ways to #SayHerName and demand #JusticeForBreonna.

Though the black community isn't monolithic, systemic racism has imparted on all of us in some way. One of my favorite parts of being unapologetically BLACK, is the strength and endurance that saturates the passed down blood in my veins.. Using that strength and faith to overcome my own obstacles and then using my victories to inform my gifts in hopes to help others defeat their demons... I love it. Just for one second, imagine if Breonna Taylor was the daughter of a prominent white man like Coach Cal, President Trump, or a horse owner in Midway, Kentucky... Do you think we would still be fighting for #JusticeForBreonna? Black women continue to be the least valued person on earth. 3 times more likely to die giving birth than their white counterparts, left to keep families together when systemic racism erradicates men from households, victims of sexual abuse, the adultification of young black girls, and the list goes on.

Day/Verse 20 Not all bias is based in hatred. Most is settled in ignorance, guilt & fragility. As uncomfortable as it feels to talk about oppressive behavior, it doesn’t equal to a piece of the pain felt by those that actually oppressed..
