We have been away for a very long while due to life being incredibly chaotic and not allowing me much time for audio editing, but Ric and I are finally back to discuss the first three episodes of the iconic Disney+ miniseries WandaVision, which kickstarted the MCU's Multiverse Saga. We reflect on what we remember our initial thoughts being at the time and how confused we were regarding what was going on, and we also share our deep love and appreciation for the great Kathryn Hahn who is introduced to the MCU here as Agnes O'Connor (whom we later learn is the nefarious witch Agatha Harkness). Let's do the time warp again - as in bring you an episode from the past! Originally intended to be a seasonal Halloween episode, our discussion around The Rocky Horror Picture Show (originally released by Fox which now means that it's Disney property) is being released much closer to Thanksgiving than to Halloween, but it was recorded on Halloween, so that counts for something, right? Besides, Eddie certainly looks like a Thanksgiving turkey in the dinner scene! Ric is back in this episode to tackle the 1975 cult horror comedy musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, sharing our earliest memories of having seen it and how our feelings for it have evolved over time. We also share how much we appreciate it being so far ahead of its time, an arthouse film in so many ways that was very likely aware that it was going to cause more raised eyebrows in 1975 than it was going to cause bitten lower lips. Even though the film is whacky and nonsensical and does not have much of a linear plot, we love it for what it is and recognize that, despite that, there are still some interesting themes to pull from the film such as rejecting oppressive cultural norms and instead allowing yourself to be yourself - to not dream it but rather to be it! We are continuing spooky season this year with the Academy Award winning 2017 film The Shape of Water! Directed and co-written by legendary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water is heavily influenced by the 1954 horror film The Creature from the Black Lagoon and tells the story of Elisa Esposito, a middle-aged nonverbal woman who falls in love with an Amphibian Man not too far removed from the Gill-man creature from the aforementioned classic horror film. I am joined again in this episode by Ric (who is, in fact, the one who originally recommended the movie to me), and we discuss how cinematically and visually beautiful that this very green movie is, pointing to some of our favorite shots and scenes. I am switching things up quite a bit in this episode, but I assure you, it's all just part of the menu. A follow-up to the 2010 smash hit Tangled, Tangled Ever After is a 2012 short movie that depicts the beautiful, character-driven story of Rapunzel's and Flynn's wedding. Well, it maybe should, but it doesn't. The majority of the few minutes are spent with Pascal and Maximus as they go through ridiculously improbable hijinks to retrieve Rapunzel's and Flynn's wedding rings before anyone notices that they are missing. There isn't much plot, but there is fun to be had if you're into silly slapstick comedy. Be sure to tune in next time for my discussion of the Disney classic The Menu! Wait. Once upon a time (or perhaps twice upon a time), I had one of my closest friends on the podcast to discuss all things Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to the 2014 box office hit Maleficent, which itself was a retelling of the 1959 Disney animated classic Sleeping Beauty. While this sequel might not quite hold up to its predecessor, it's still a great movie as far as sequels go, and we are both looking forward to this being rounded out as a trilogy given that a third film has been announced. Let us tell an old story anew, and we will see how well you know it. The 2014 film Maleficent was definitely fairly polarizing upon its release nearly a decade ago because of the drastic changes that it makes to the beloved animated classic Sleeping Beauty. In this version, Maleficent still becomes a villain and curses the young princess Aurora, but, unlike her animated counterpart, she thereafter finds redemption. Some viewers did not like this, while others (like myself) loved it. Where do you stand? Do you like the more complex and nuanced anti-hero that Angelina Jolie gives us in this pivotal performance, or do you prefer the more iconic maniacal and ruthless embodiment of evil that Eleanor Audley gave us more than six decades ago?
