    Allyship is Lifelong with Dr. Manju Varma | Episode 9

    Supporting our Indigenous Community with Tera McDonald | Episode 8

    A member of Qalipu First Nation, Tera McDonald (she/they) is the owner of Kalawikk (Gal-a-wikk) and the soon to open Kalawikk micro Gallery. Through Kalawikk, a social enterprise, Tera leverages 20 years of accommodations experience in communications education to exact greater impact in inclusivity, accessibility, diversity, and equitability standards for clients. Training is offered in full and half day sessions and aligns clients ranging from educational institutions, tourism operators, to health providers, with actionable inclusion tools to build Kind Spaces. This training is guided by the CLEAR framework which was developed by Kalawikk through 2022-2023 to emphasize action over awareness to support inclusive behaviour development. Alongside working to create Kind Spaces, Tera combines her communications knowledge with digital art through illustration, branding and marketing materials, and personal expression. A graphic designer and lifelong artist, Tera’s artwork can be found on Quidi Vidi Artist Series beer cans, local posters for plays, and business’ storefronts and webpages. Tera’s work was nominated for and awarded the International Association of Business Communicator’s NL Chapter Pinnacle Award for Creative Design in 2019. Now developing Kalawikk micro Gallery, Tera aims to provide NL’s Indigenous artists a decolonized space in which to share and sell their artwork. This intimate space, which plans to open late summer 2023, will be reservation only and provide small, interactive group engagements in a Kind Space to explore and discuss Indigenous artwork. Over the years, as an individual and working through Kalawikk, Tera has worked with Indigenous communities and organizations within NL such as Shushepishipan Ishpitentamun Mitshuap Inc. and Empowering Indigenous Women for Stronger Communities.     Laurabel Mba is a Communications, Marketing and Fund Development Specialist and a mom to a 4-year-old boy. She recognizes and has lived experiences of the disparities in society for BIPOC, marginalized and underrepresented communities. She lends her voice and leverages her experiences to bring their concerns and struggles to the decision-making table. She is one of the hosts of Rogers TV's "Out of the Fog" show. Laurabel enjoys shining light on those working hard and smart to make Newfoundland and Labrador a more welcoming province as well as those striving to improve the lives of all who call it home. As a member of the Anti-racism Coalition of Newfoundland and Labrador, a member of both the St. John's Status of Women Council and Happy City St. John's. She works with a wide variety of like-minded individuals to improve the experiences of marginalized communities in our province. Her activist spirit became public after the murder of George Floyd. The unfortunate incident inspired her to write a series of poems focused on the black experience and fighting racism and prejudice. Laurabel Mba is involved in numerous campaigns focused on advocacy on issues about 2slgbtq+ representation, inclusion and diversity in politics and mental health.
