He highlighted how connecting with fellow veterans who have already made the leap into entrepreneurship provided invaluable guidance and support. This collaboration not only helped him avoid common pitfalls but also fostered a sense of camaraderie that is often missing in civilian life. The podcast also touched on the resources available for veterans looking to start their own businesses. Various organizations and programs are dedicated to supporting veteran entrepreneurs, providing everything from funding to training. By leveraging these resources, veterans can better equip themselves for the challenges ahead, ensuring they have the tools needed to succeed in their new ventures.  As we reflect on the inspiring stories shared during the podcast, it becomes clear that the path from service to ownership is not only possible but can also lead to fulfilling and successful careers. Episode 47 - From Soldier to Sober: Joe Yurick's Journey of Transformation

Send us Fan MailIn today’s episode we sit down with Joe Yurick The Founder of This Sober Vet Podcast, a U.S. combat veteran and small business owner, to discuss his incredible journey from military service to sobriety. Joe shares his insights on normalizing sobriety within the veteran community, highlighting the challenges he faced and the lessons he learned along the way.Main Content:1. Joe’s Military Background:  Joe Yurick graduated high school in 2000 and enlisted in the Army, initially joining to support a friend. He underwent boot camp at Fort Sill and AIT at Fort Bliss, where he learned to operate the Patriot missile system. Joe shared that he was not a model student in high school, often seen as the class clown, yet he rose to the occasion during his training, graduating as an honor student. The turning point in his military career came shortly after 9/11 when he was deployed to Qatar, playing a crucial role in protecting U.S. interests during the early stages of the Iraq War.2. The Downward Spiral After Service:  After leaving the military, Joe struggled with finding direction and purpose. His transition into civilian life was rocky, marked by heavy drinking and substance abuse. He confided that he didn’t realize he was an addict at the time, viewing his behavior as normal. Joe recounted nights spent drinking with friends and even getting into trouble with military authorities, illustrating the party culture that often surrounds young soldiers.3. The Wake-Up Call:  Joe's relationship with his wife became strained due to his drinking habits. After a particularly reckless night, she confronted him about his alcohol abuse, leading to an ultimatum: stop drinking or risk losing his family. This moment served as Joe’s catalyst for change, prompting him to reassess his life and relationship with alcohol. He candidly shared that he agreed to stop drinking for six months, recognizing the need for a serious change.4. The Journey to Sobriety:  Transitioning to sobriety was not easy for Joe, as he felt exposed and vulnerable without alcohol to numb his emotions. He emphasized the importance of support systems, relying on his wife, a therapist, and his faith to guide him through the challenges. Joe discovered healthier ways to cope with stress and celebrate achievements without resorting to alcohol. He found joy in simple pleasures, like treating himself to cookies instead of drinks, showcasing how small changes can lead to significant improvements in life.5. The Impact of Sobriety:  Now three and a half years sober, Joe reflects on the positive changes in his life. His relationships with his wife and children have strengthened, his health has improved, and he has successfully managed his business without the haze of alcohol. Joe also highlighted the financial benefits of sobriety, noting how much money he saved by quitting drinking, which allowed him to make better decisions and investments for his future. Conclusion:  Joe Yurick’s story is a powerful reminder of the challenges many veterans face during their transition to civilian life. Through resilience and determination, he has turned his struggles into a mission to help normalize sobriety among veterans. Check out This Sober Vet at: https://thissobervet.com/#VeteranStories #Sobriety #MentalHealth #AddictionRecovery #SoberVet #Transformation #Entrepreneurship #VeteranSupportSupport the showVisit our website: https://www.dogtags-to-ownership.com/Follow us on Social Media Instagram/Facebook/Threads: @dogtags_to_ownershipX: @DTO_PodcastTikTok: @dogtags_to_ownership
