Double Feature Frenzy

Zodiac (2007), based on true events, is Fincher's classic thriller, lightly inspired by M (1931), which basically invented the procedural drama. The bell is ringing and class has begun as Emily and Margaret learn about high school movies, the musical, Grease (1978) and the comedy, Bottoms (2023). With Grease being credited with the creation of a lot of common high school film tropes, compared to the modern take on the tropes in Bottoms. We discuss the important questions, who is PJ and who is Josie? And is Danny Zuko gay for dating a woman? Join us or you’ll get detention.

Mosey on down with us as we educate ourselves with the classic piece of cinema, Butch Cassidey and The Sundance Kid, by way of Tarantino’s modern cowboy flick, Django Unchained. Very familiar with westerns? Well, forgive us as we navigate this beloved genre by watching the movie that is often sighted as being the start of the modern western (Butch Cassidy), and a Tarantino fan favourite.

Should Margaret and Emily be sent to space? Absolutely not, but they will talk about it at length. For our first episode, we take a dive into complex narrative structure and unreliable narrators with David Fincher's The Social Network (2010) and Akira Kurosawa's Rashamon (1950). The Social Network is a personal favourite of ours and when we heard that it had a lot in common with a classic Kurosawa film that neither of us were familiar with, we were intrigued. But will they make a good double feature? Let's find out.
