What Makes Universities Meta-Skills Ready? Evidence from 60 Chinese HEIs
In this episode, I’m introducing the key idea behind my 2026 IJERE article, “Meta-skills-oriented academic management in higher education: evidence from Chinese HEIs.”Universities are under pressure to develop graduates with meta-skills—adaptability, critical thinking, collaboration, and the ability to perform under uncertainty. But in most discussions, meta-skills are treated as a learner-level outcome—something students develop inside classrooms. My argument is different: meta-skills can be an institutional management orientation—a guiding logic that reshapes how universities organize academic management systems. In this study, I propose and test a framework that links meta-skills orientation—metacognitive capacity, emotional intelligence, and motivational competence—to four academic management frames: structural, human resource, political, and symbolic. Then I examine how these frames connect to institutional performance.Using a cross-sectional survey of 2,406 administrators and faculty across 60 Chinese HEIs, analyzed with SEM, the model fits well. Meta-skills orientation significantly strengthens all four management frames, and importantly, the structural and human resource frames are the strongest predictors of institutional performance. We also see differences across university tiers, with national key universities showing a stronger pathway from meta-skills orientation to structural change. So the takeaway is practical: meta-skills are not only a student outcome—they can become a management system, with frame-specific levers for evidence-based academic reform.
