Season 4: Ep 14 – Toy Story Vs Toy Story 2 Vs Toy Story 3

It’s the final week and we have a special show for you all! This whole season we’ve taken original films and pitted them against their sequels. Generally, if there’s more than one sequel, the quality will often go downhill. Or at least that was historically the case. The case before the Toy Story movies got on the scene, which is what we’ll be discussing this week! But instead of Toy Story 1 vs. Toy Story 2, we decided that Toy Story 3 was too good to leave out and we are having a first ever for the show. Producer Brandon will be the judge. The man in the chair becomes the man with the mic…and the power!  Steve will defend Toy Story 1. Nate will advocate for Toy Story 2. And Jeff will make the argument for Toy Story 3 as the best. For a series that has some of the most emotional moments in film history, will Andy choosing Buzz over Woody be the most emotional? Or perhaps it’s Jesse pining for her past life with her previous owner? Or maybe it’s the whole crew coming to grips with Andy aging out of toys?  Listen and find out! Season 4: Ep 13 – Scream Vs Scream 2

Do you like scary movies? Cause we certainly do this season. Our second original vs. sequel pairing for horror movies (or third if you count Alien as many do), includes the quintessential 90’s horror series: Scream! Steve takes on the responsibility of defending the original Scream that kickd off an entirely new generation of slasher films that lasted more than a decade. And Jeff gets the honors of trying to prove that it’s sequel (the first of many) is better than the original. Will the meta nature of small-town feel of the first movie take home the victory? Or will the even more deeply meta nature and new setting of the second film slash it’s wayl to the top?  Listen and find out! Season 4: Ep 12 – Batman Begins Vs, The Dark Knight

In our most recent original vs. sequel pairing, we have a couple of movies that many of you know very well and are part of one of the biggest franchises in history: Batman. This week we take a look at the Christopher Nolan reboot Batman Begins and it’s revolutionary sequel The Dark Knight.  Nate gets to defend the start of the reboot series with Batman Begins. And opposing him will be Steve arguing on The Dark Knight and it’s merits. Will the “hero’s journey” structure of Batman Begins give that movie the victory this week? Or will the career defining performance by Heath Ledger of one of the most iconic villains in history give the edge to the sequel? Season 4: Ep 11 – Alien Vs. Aliens

In space nobody can hear you scream about which movie is better, the original or the sequel. Luckily, we’re not in space, we’re on a podcast and you get to hear us argue about which is better between the first two films in the Alien franchise: Alien and Aliens.  Jeff will defend the original that started it off with Ridley Scott’s Alien (which we discussed in season 1 if you want to go back and do some prep before this episode), and James Cameron’s (making his third appearance this season) Aliens. Will the tight setting and epic tension of the first film lead it to victory? Or will the non-stop action and lore expansion give the sequel enough to overtake the classic original? Season 4: Ep 10 – Hellraiser Vs. Hellraiser 2

We have such sights to show you! Err, tell you. You know what we’re trying to say. Or at least you will with this episode as we take on one of the greatest original and sequel runs for a horror movie franchise in history. This week we look at Clive Barker’s legendary Hellraiser and compare with Hellbound: Hellraiser II.  As the resident horror nut, Jeff gets to the be the judge as Steve argues for the original Hellraiser and Nate will take the reigns of arguing for Hellbound: Hellraiser II being the superior film. Does the closed room nature of the original lend it to winning the week? Or will the expansion of the lore and the setting help the sequel take the crown?  Listen and find out! What’s that? You want to know what movies we’re discussing this week? The Moose our front should have told ya! Cause it’s a beaut, Clark! That’s right, we’re doing one of the best original and sequel comedies in history, National Lampoon’s Vacation will go up against National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation!  Nate will get the honor of defending the one that started it all with the documentation of the Griswold family and their cross-country trek to Wally’s World in the original Vacation. And Jeff will hop into the sleigh of the defense of the sequel that documents what happens when a famil like the Griswolds tries to host Christmas in the epic sequel, Christmas Vacation. Season 4: Ep 8 – Home Alone Vs. Home Alone 2

AHHHHH! It’s here! Another one of the “gotta have it this season” originals vs sequels comes in the form of Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. One might ask themselves how you could possibly build on the success of a runaway hit like Home Alone? Well, that’s what we’re here to answer! Jeff will defend the original Home Alone as being better but Steve will argue that Lost in New York is the superior film. With almost the entire cast returning but a few new characters on board, which one will find it’s way towards taking the crown?  Listen and find out! Season 4: Ep 7 – Shrek Vs. Shrek 2

After one of the most epic showdowns of last week, we have another one today. One of the greatest animated films of all time and one of the greatest animated sequels of all time will face off this week when Shrek goes up against Shrek 2! Nate gets to advocate for the original Shrek while Steve takes the reigns of defending Shrek 2. Season 4: Ep 6 – A New Hope Vs. Empire Strike Back

This is the week that we’re sure many of you have been waiting for. When the idea of “original vs. sequel” comes up one of the biggest examples that comes to mind is one of the first to ever enter the conversation: Star Wars: A New Hope vs. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back. One of the most successful franchises in history and two of the best sci-fi movies will duke it out to see who takes it home this week.  Jeff will argue for the original A New Hope and Steve will get the honor of defending The Empire Strikes Back. Will the revolutionary nature of the original take home the victory? Or will the expansion of the world and journey into a deeper story of The Empire Strikes Back be the one that propels the sequel to victory?  Listen and find out! Season 4: Ep 5 – Top Gun Vs Top Gun Maverick

We’re riding into the danger zone this week! Or do we have the need for speed? Either way, we’re Tom Cruise-running our way into this weeks episode which introduces our first Legacy Sequel of the season as we pit together Top Gun vs. Top Gun Maverick.  Tom Cruise came back to reprise his role as Maverick more than 3 decades after the original. Almost the entire cast and crew around him was switched for the sequel, so does the charm of Tom Cruise win out from the original? Or does the world weary Cruise that we know today take them to victory? Nate will defend the original and Steve will defend Maverick as we take on our first legacy sequel situation. Season 4: Ep 3 – Terminator vs Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Week three is here and we have a good one! After two weeks of the original taking the win, will a sequel finally be able to break through? This week is as good of a chance as any with the epic films of The Terminator and the Terminator 2: Judgment Day. This will be the first week in which there is a clear difference between budget and production values between the first and second movie. As we laid it out in our first episode this season, the argument “the special effects are better because of the bigger budget” is not a viable argument. So how will these bee defended?  To find out, Steve will have the honor of defending the original The Terminator and Jeff will take the defense of the sequel The Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Without the obvious argument of better special effects (especially ones as revolutionary as T2) how will the arguments for the film hold up? Is it still better from a character and story perspective? Or does the ingenuity of the original win out?  Listen and find out! Subscribe and Rate us on Podcast Services! iTunes – Spotify – iHeart – Amazon – RSS Did you like the show? Let us know! Email us! Season 4: Ep 2 – Father of the Bride Vs Father of the Bride 2

After the heaviness of last weeks episode, we take on a little bit lighter duo of films The Father of the Bride and The Father of the Bride Part II. Two hilarious movies starring legends of the silver screen Steve Martin and Diane Keaton.  We have a reversal of last weeks advocators with Nate taking on the original The Father of the Bride and Jeff defending The Father of the Bride Part II. Will the hilarious hijinks of wedding preparation take the cake (pun intended) or will the dual (see what I did there?) bundles of joy in the second get the nod?  Listen and find out which one takes it home. Season 4: Ep 1 – The Godfather Vs Godfather 2

We’re back, baby! Season 4 is upon us! We’ve done director vs. director (twice!). We’ve done doppelganger vs. doppelganger. So what’s next? Original vs. sequel, of course! The long held tradition of arguing whether the first or second movie is better has been co-opted for this season and our NEW title: Deux of the Greats! Our first dual of the Deux is two of not only the greatest movie and sequel of all time, but two of the greatest films of all time period: The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. Jeff takes the reigns of advocating for The Godfather and Nate makes the argument for The Godfather Part II.  Will the original with Marlon Brando’s epic, Acadamy Award winning performance take it home? And is it possible to make contact with these spirits and aid them in their passing? The Sixth Sense and Stir of Echoes are two movies that came out a month apart and seek to answer these questions.  Both movies deal with the ability to “see dead people,” but approach it in different ways that reveal different aspects of the human condition. Season 3: Ep 5 – No Strings Attached vs. Friends with Benefits

From the time of “When Harry Met Sally” many rom-coms have tried to figure out whether men and women can be “just friends.” But something was in the air in 2011 that had people wondering if they could be *only* be more than friends? Instead of wondering if a relationship could be had without the physical it’s whether a relationship could be had with only the physical.  This is the question that two movies came along to answer. “No Strings Attached” starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher rivaled “Friends With Benefits” starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake. Which movie handled this topic better? Which was a better version of the rom-com? Has either movie become a classic to rival others of the genre? Season 3: Ep 4 – Immaculate vs. The First Omen

You’ve heard of a pregnant pause, but how about a pregnant nun?? Well, we’ve got two of them this week in our doppelganger movies. These are the most recent movies that we have ever reviewed as both of these movies came out in 2024 and are hardly over a year old but they have made their mark. These movies are the Sydney Sweeney passion project Immaculate and the horror movie prequel The First Omen.  Both movies take place in a convent where something isn’t quite as it seems. And both movies have one of the chosen nuns that are the unfortunate ones to figure out exactly what it is that is going on…and it ain’t pretty. Which movie tackles this unique topic better? Season 3: Ep 3 – Antz vs A Bug’s Life

The Dual of the Greats marches up the hill hoorah, hoorah! This week we take on our first ever animated movies in AntZ and A Bug’s Life. Both movies came out in the year 1998 (somebody needs to really look into the 97-98 period and all the doppelganger movies) and feature a plot of an ant colony that has to protect itself from external threats attempting to steal their resources. It’s there first ever  AntZ was one of the first major Deamworks productions that solidified them as a competitor to Pixar. Before Shrek, before Kung Fu Panda, before How to Train Your Dragon, there was AntZ and it’s star-studded cast. But it goes up against the mighty Titan that is Pixar. Even back in 1998 they were young but had solidified their position as the leaders in CGI animation. Which one will get the nod? Listen and find out this week! Season 3: Ep 2 – Dante’s Peak vs Volcano

Season 3 continues with our second set of doppelganger movies. This week we have the Pierce Brosnan vehicle Dante’s Peak facing off against the Tommy Lee Jones lead Volcano. Both movies came out in the early part of 1997 and featured dormant volcanoes that became active and threatened people in various locales. In Volcano, Tommy Lee Jones is aided by Anne Heche as he tries to save the city of Los Angeles from molten lava. Meanwhile, Linda Hamilton assists Pierce Brosnan as they both try to save the small town of Dante’s Peak from the volcano it built underneath. Who decided to build a town there? We’ll never know, but we WILL know which is the better movie after they face off this week. Listen to find out which one takes it home. Season 3: Ep 1 – Deep Impact vs Armageddon

We’re back, baby! Season Three is here! And we’ve changed things up this season. You made have noticed we are now DUAL of the Greats. Why is that you ask? Wonderful question! Instead of putting one director against another we are going straight to the movies themselves. Forget about the directors! We’re putting doppelganger movies against each other. What’s a doppelganger movie? Another excellent question! It’s a set of two movies that are released within 12 months of each other and have a very similar plot/premise.  As an example, we have our week 1 matchup which is mabe the most famous of the doppelganger movie phenomenon: Armageddon vs. Deep Impact. Both movies came out in the year 1998 and both movies are about how society reacts when they find out that an asteroid/comet is coming towards Earth. How does each movie handle this topic? What do they focus on? Which one does better with their focus? Listen on and see in our first episode of DuAl of the Greats Season 3! Season 2: Episode 13 – Rest Your Case

It all comes down to this! For the second year in a row we have reached a draw and will present two films that must be decided on to get the winner. “We Rest Our Case” week has Jeff touting the greatness of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” starring–for their first time altogether–Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci (who came out of retirement just for this role!). Nate will counter with another part of the excellent “Brooklyn Sextet” from Spike Lee with “Crooklyn”.  What is it about these movies that typifies what the directors do best? Which director got the most out of the material and the actors? Which is the better film? And who will take home the crown for season 2 of Duel of the Greats Listen on to find out who takes it home this week. Season 2: Episode 12 – Undercover

SHHHHH! (It’s undercover week. On this week’s show Steve, Nate, and Jeff discuss two fantastic movies from these two directors. Spike Lee lets us look in on an infiltration of the KKK by a black policeman portrayed by John David Washington in the 1970’s who enlists the help of Adam Driver. Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese’s The Departed gives us a behind the curtain look at an attempt to infiltrate the Boston mob by the state police as Martin Sheen and Mark Whalberg recruit Leonardo DiCaprio to get into a gang run by Jack Nicholson that uses Matt Damon as a mole in the police department (did you follow all that?). Both movies were nominated for a bevy of Oscars including both Martin Scorsese’s first win (Best Director and the movie also went on to win best picture) and Spike Lee’s first win (Best Adapted Screenplay). ) Main character going undercover is not a new story so how does each director take it and make it their own? Which one is able to best summarize the tension and stress involved in such a task? Which one got the best performances of their electric casts?  Listen on to find out who takes it home this week. 34. 17

    Season 2: Episode 11 – Biopic

Biopic week is here! Whether you pronounce it bye-oh-pic or bye-op-ick is irrelevant cause the crew is talking about some good ones here. Martin Scorsese gives us his gloriously epic “The Aviator” starring Leonardo DiCaprio in his Oscar nominated role and Cate Blanchette in her first Oscar winning role. Spike Lee takes us on a journey through the life of the Civil Rights leader Malcolm X as Denzel Washington gives one of his career best performances that earned him an Oscar nod.  Biopic formats can be tricky but are incredibly important to the movie. Who had the best format? Who was able to get the best performances out of the actors that most invoked who they were trying to portray? And with both movies having incredible scope that spans decades, who was able to use that to their best ability? These two films go head to head in one of the most heated weeks this season! Season 2: Episode 10 – Staged

Who’s ready for this week? It’s STAGED! On this weeks show our two directors take on a journey through two stories in which the entire thing is a setup, but who knows what? What is real and what is not real? Spike Lee’s “Inside Man” starring Denzel Washington matches wits with “Shutter Island” from Martin Scorsese, where one man’s quest to find a missing prisoner reveals more than he realized about the prison and himself. Which movie did staged the best? Which had the most interesting twist? Which had the best ending?” Nate, Steve, and Jeff discuss all this and more on this weeks episode. Season 2: Episode 9 – Music

It’s Music Week! On this week’s show two movie-based films go head to head. Spike Lee’s “Mo’ Betta Blues” starring Denzel Washington goes head-to-head with “New York, New York” Martin Scorsese’s musical journey starring Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli.   Which movie did music the best? Which had the best musical journey? Which had the best “signature song?” Nate, Steve, and Jeff discuss all this and more on this week’s episode.  Listen on to find out who takes it home this week. 37. 14

    Season 2: Episode 8 – Controversy

It’s “Controversy” week! Two movies that stoked the fires of controversy from these two directors. Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ” didn’t go over as he planned and was disowned by the Catholic Church. Spike Lee’s “Bamboozled” was a daring look at what it would be like to put on a minstrel show on cable TV.  Both movies were ambitious looks at very complicated topics. Both were met with you guessed it…controversy. Which one courted it the best? Which one was most controversial? Which was the better movie? Nate, Steve, and Jeff discuss and declare a winner…. Season 2: Episode 7 – Buried Secrets

It’s “Buried Secrets” week on this installment of the podcast! Martin Scorsese’s “Cape Fear” goes up against Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer”.  Scorsese joins up with longtime collaborator Robert De Niro to make a film about how some people can’t let go of the past. While Lee teams up with a cast of many that have been in his films before dealing with how, for some people, the past will never leave them. Both movies are a bit out of the comfort zone of their creators, but sometimes that can be good. Did both directors swing for the fences? Did they hit a homerun? Did they even make contact? Jeff, Steve, and Nate dig into each film to determine which director did or didn’t and which one did it the best. 39. 12

Season 2: Episode 6 – Day in the Life

This week’s theme is “A Day in the Life”. Both films center around one man’s journey that takes place in a single day. Spike Lee has his grounded take with “25th Hour” starring Edward Norten, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Pepper, and Rosario Dawson. Meanwhile, Martin Scorcese takes a different approach with the surreal and comedic “After Hours” starring Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, John Heard, Catherine O’Hara, Teri Gar, and Cheech and Chong.  Despite the films different approaches, they both nail the aesthetic of showing how one day can be so impactful in somebody’s life. And the question, as always, is who did it better? Who was the one who captured the essence of how such a single and important day can impact so many people? Spike’s down-to-Earth take? Or Marty’s surrealist bender?  Jeff, Steve, and Nate discuss all this and more on this week’s show. Season 2: Episode 5 – The Streets

From the Streets week is here! These two legendary directors tell stories of Steet-level gangsters who try to climb to the top only for it all to come crashing down. Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci reunite with Scorsese again in ‘Casino’, a spiritual successor to Goodfellas. And they all go up against newcomer Mekhi Pfeiffer in one of his first starring roles going to battle with two of this season’s biggest crossover actors in detectives played by Harvey Keitel and John Turturro. As the lives of these characters escalate so do the stakes. Nothing and nobody is safe in the precarious worlds these characters have built for themselves. But which world encapsulated this feeling better? Which director and their actors will come out on top this week? Nate, Steve, and Jeff discuss and determine who will take the week. 41. 10

    Season 2: Episode 4 – Athlete

It’s Sports week! Our two directors square off with movies that revolve around sports and athletes. Both directors enlist the help of their best collaborators as Martin Scorsese taps Robert De Niro to play the real life boxer Jake LaMotta in “Raging Bull” and Spike Lee calls upon his multi-collaborator Denzel Washington to play the fictional Jake Shuttlesworth in “He Got Game”.  Both movies involve great performances to go along with a couple of very good films. But which will come out on top this week? Will De Niro’s Oscar winning portrayal give him the edge? Or will Denzel’s tortured father help pull “He Got Game” to the front?  Nate, Steve, and Jeff discuss and determine who comes out on top. Listen and find out their thoughts and who will win! Season 2: Episode 3 – Paranoia Week

It’s paranoia week on Duel of the Greats! But Paranoia of what? Of whom? Are they watching? Are they listening? Are they on the podcast right now? They are, in fact, Spike Lee’s “Summer of Sam” and Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver”. Two movies that take place in New York and make everyone a suspect.  Steve, Nate, and Jeff dive into these films and look at which one was the better depiction of paranoid. Which film showed the characters being sucked into their own worlds of paranoia better?  New York is a character of it’s own this week as it dominates both movies. But which one does it better? Season 2: Episode 2 – Best of the Best

Season 2 rolls on! After reviewing the first movies of Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese we now move on to their best! While the consensus may not be universal, it is generally accepted that Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” and Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” are these directors best films. Others may have made more money or had more awards nominations but these are the two that have stood the test of time. Jeff, Nate, and Steve dive in to get it the bottom of which movie is better. Which one deserves the title of “best of the best”. Scorsese’s gangster opus, or Lee’s deep look into the societal issues that surround a small neighborhood in Brooklyn. Both films are great. Both deserve all the accolades that they receive. But only a true duel can get to the bottom of which is best. Listen and find out who the guys think should take the crown this week! Season 2: Episode 1 – Opening Credits!

We’re back, baby! Season two has begun! After the epic battle that was Steven Spielberg vs. Ridley Scott last season, we come back this year with two new directors who are legends in their own right, Spike Lee vs. Martin Scorsese. These two directors have an incredibly long and varied filmography and we’ve got some great films to review and compare throughout this season so be sure to join us to see them all. Up first this week is the opening films from these directors. Spike Lee has “She’s Gotta Have It” and “School Daze”, two movies that are part of his “thematic trilogy” that is completed with “Do the Right Thing” (talked about in a separate week). Scorsese has a thematic trilogy of his own. The first of which was never filmed, but the final two parts were filmed in “Who’s That Knocking At My Door?” and “Mean Streets” Which director started their career better? Which movies jumped out the most? Who seemed the most promising? Steve, Nate, and Jeff tackle these topics and more in the kickoff to a new Duel this season. Season 1: Episode 15 – Closing Arguments

It’s We Rest Our Case week! The Final Battle has arrived! It’s a bit of a different format this week as Steve will take a movie directed by Ridley Scott and plead his case for why it shows why Ridley should be the victor in season one. Going up against him is Jeff picking a movie from Steven Spielberg that showcases why Spielberg should be standing alone at the end of this season. Steve’s pick for Ridley Scott is Kingdom of Heaven – Director’s Cut (2005) and Jeff’s pick for Spielberg is War of the Worlds (2005). Why does each movie represent the best of each director? What is so great about these two movies? And which one shows why their director should be named the winner of S1 DUEL OF THE GREATS? All those questions and more were discussed in this week’s penultimate episode of season one. 00:45 – Intro 2:07 – First experiences with these movies 8:26 – Format explanation 9:19 – Steve Describes why Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s Cut) should make Ridley Scott the victor 24:59 – Nate and Jeff’s thoughts and cross-examination of the film 46:21 – Jeff describes why War of the Worlds should make Steven Spielberg the victor 1:08:39 – Nate and Steve’s thoughts and cross-examination of the film 1:29:52 – Nate’s Final Decision! 1:46:14 – Discussion of next week’s final wrap-up episode Subscribe and Rate us on Podcast Services! iTunes – Google Play – Stitcher – Spotify – RSS Did you like the show? Season 1: Episode 13 – Growing Up and Going Home

It’s “Far From Home” week on Duel of the Greats! Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra Terrestrial matches up against Ridley Scott’s White Squall. This week Jeff, Nate, and Steve are away from home and coming of age with alien friends and a semester at sea. Spielberg and Scott both both try ton replicate that feeling of growing up and losing innocence in a world run by adults. Will they take off for home or be stranded at sea? Which movie is better at using movie magic to make the viewer evoke those same feelings of growing older and discovering yourself? Which director was better at handling child/younger actors? It’s “Stranded” week on Duel of the Greats! Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal matches up against Ridley Scott’s The Martian. This week Jeff, Nate, and Steve are simultaneously left behind and stuck in bureaucratic limbo. Spielberg and Scott both took a gamble by telling fairly lighthearted stories of a man seeing red: red tape and red dust, respectively. Which movie is better at using movie magic to make the viewer feel the character’s isolation? Which director better converted his serious leading man into a comedic hero? And ultimately, which movie says more about the indomitable human spirit, gender equality, and/or the American Dream? Wait, really?
