Sensory-Friendly Haircuts for Neurodivergent Kids : Henry Tribes

Kim talks with Henry "Tribes", a Dallas barber known for sensory-friendly haircuts for neurodivergent kids and the inventor of the Weighted Cape. Henry shares how a weighted blanket inspired a new kind of haircut cape, which opened his eyes to families who needed more than a traditional barbershop experience. Henry explains what makes a session successful: preparation with parents before the appointment, reading nonverbal cues, letting kids set the pace, and bringing calm, flexible, positive energy into every interaction. He also highlights the importance of honoring parents, including the hard days when a haircut does not happen, and why he commits to never quitting on a child. This conversation offers practical strategies for anyone who works with neurodivergent kids, plus Henry's vision for sensory-friendly support becoming the standard in industries like health care, education, and travel. What changes a church more than a new program? Sometimes it's a friendship. Kim sits down with Ryan Wolfe, President of Ability Ministry, for a conversation that's both practical and deeply personal. Ryan shares the stories of Clyde and Coral, two friends who shaped his calling and helped him see the difference between doing ministry for people with disabilities and doing ministry with them (and ultimately by them). You'll also walk away with tools you can use right away, including Ability Ministry's free, professional one-page resources (intake forms, volunteer training, disability awareness tools, visual schedules, and more) and DisabilityIsBeautiful.com, a free stock photo library that helps churches reflect the people they hope to welcome. Big Feelings, Little Kids, and a Gospel-Centered Preschool Ministry : Josh Zello

In this episode of Every Child Belongs, Kim talks with Josh Zello, founder of JesusLovesPreschoolers.com, about building gospel-centered, developmentally rich preschool ministries where kids feel safe, known, and loved. Josh shares what changed when he moved from Texas to Baltimore and stepped into ministry in an urban context where trust is not assumed. He explains why many outreach events fail when they require parents to drop off children, and how trust is often built outside the church walls through consistent presence, service, and relationships, including his surprising role as "Tot Lot Josh." Kim and Josh also dig into big feelings in little kids. Josh reframes emotions as part of being made in God's image and offers practical ways to partner with children as their brains grow and their experiences shape what they feel. The conversation takes a powerful turn as Josh shares what he has learned serving families in his church who are blind, including simple but meaningful accommodations like adjusting worship slides for readability, providing song lyrics in Braille, changing everyday ministry language, and training volunteers to communicate in ways that help kids feel safe and included. They close by talking about wonder, the childlike faith of preschoolers, and how kids can help adults rediscover trust, presence, and joy in the everyday gifts of God. When Inclusion Feels Difficult: Practical Tools for Churches : Cortney Jenkins

In this episode, Kim talks with Cortney Jenkins, founder of Awe and Wonder, about practical, realistic ways churches can create spaces where kids with disabilities truly belong. Cortney shares how her years as a middle school special education teacher shaped her passion to bridge the gap between classroom strategies and church ministry, and why her adapted Bible resources help more than one group of learners. Cortney unpacks simple tools churches can use right away, including visual timers for transitions, visual supports and AAC-style symbols to clarify Bible stories, and repeating one clear main idea throughout a lesson. She also challenges churches to think beyond children's ministry and build a lifespan mindset, especially helping students transition into middle school and youth ministry with the supports they already use as kids. They discuss what well-intentioned leaders sometimes say that can unintentionally harm families, how to reframe disruption as discipleship, and how to pursue safety and inclusion when a child has high support needs. Cortney closes with practical ideas for churches without a dedicated sensory room, plus the hope and heartbreak she carries as she hears stories from families and ministry leaders across the country. Inclusion Ministry for Teens and Adults : Stephanie Smith

In this episode of Every Child Belongs, Kim talks with Stephanie Smith, CEO and founder of Kingdom Inclusion, a ministry creating inclusive environments for teens and adults with disabilities and helping churches bridge the gap between the church community and the disability community. Stephanie shares the story behind her passion, shaped by her sister Shelly, who has cerebral palsy and uses a communication device. She explains why finding a church that truly welcomes people with disabilities can be so challenging, and what changed when Shelly was included in youth group life simply as a person who belonged. You'll hear practical ideas churches can use right away to create meaningful belonging beyond kids ministry, including asking families what barriers exist, inviting individuals with disabilities to serve in ordinary roles like greeting and hospitality, and helping volunteers slow down, learn, and ask questions. Stephanie also shares powerful stories from Kingdom Inclusion, including a moment at the Great Banquet when a guest realized, "They really love me here." If you want church to become the most inclusive place on earth, this conversation will encourage you and give you next steps you can actually take. Why Nearly Half of Families Leave Church: New Research with Erik Carter

Dr. Erik Carter joins Every Child Belongs to talk about what belonging really means for families impacted by disability and why churches must move beyond accessibility to genuine relationships. Erik is a professor at Baylor University and Executive Director of the Baylor Center for Disability and Flourishing. He shares how friendships with young adults with developmental disabilities shaped his faith and his life's work, and why ministry must be with people, not for them. Kim and Erik discuss research showing that nearly half of families of children with disabilities have left their church because their child wasn't welcomed or included. They explore the "10 dimensions of belonging," what intentional churches do differently, and practical ways churches can support families not only on Sundays but throughout the week. The episode closes with encouragement for leaders who feel overwhelmed and a reminder that creating belonging is central to the gospel. Anniversary Episode: A Year of Stories, Strategies, and Hope

It's the one-year anniversary of Every Child Belongs and this episode flips the script. With Dave kicking things off, Kim Botto reflects on what the past year has meant, what surprised her most, and what she's learned from conversations with educators, therapists, parents, and advocates. You'll hear the biggest themes that kept showing up across the season: why proximity matters, why behavior is often misunderstood, why listening is so closely tied to love, and why adults have a responsibility to stay in the game longer than feels comfortable. Kim and Dave also talk about the power of community for families who feel isolated, the importance of offering specific help, and the hope-filled truth that change is possible through both neuroplasticity and the renewing of the mind. If you serve kids in any capacity, this recap will help you focus on what matters most: creating spaces where kids can be fully themselves, find their people, and experience real belonging. Foster Care Impacts the Whole Family : Daniela Coats

On this episode, Kim Botto welcomes licensed clinical social worker Daniela Coats—founder of With Siblings and a powerful advocate for birth children in foster and adoptive families. Daniela brings a deeply personal and professional perspective, having grown up as a "bio kid" in a foster family and now parenting children through both birth and adoption. She's also the author of a beautiful children's book, The Day Lily Turned Uninvisible, which shines a light on a group often overlooked in caregiving spaces: the biological children in foster and adoptive homes. Daniela shares how growing up with foster siblings shaped her identity and led to moments of feeling invisible—not just at home, but also in church and community spaces. She recalls the emotional confusion and social challenges of adapting to new family dynamics, often without guidance or validation. These early experiences sparked a passion to make sure bio kids don't feel left out or silenced in the midst of their family's calling to foster or adopt. In the conversation, Kim and Daniela explore practical ways families, churches, and caregivers can better support biological children. Whether it's giving bio kids space to express their feelings, empowering them with language to navigate difficult conversations, or simply remembering to include them in prayers, gifts, or church programming, Daniela offers compassionate, insightful ideas for honoring every child's voice. If your family fosters, adopts, or supports families who do, this episode is essential listening. Daniela's perspective reminds us that seeing every child—adopted, fostered, or biological—builds stronger families and more compassionate communities. Our routines change, the way we do things change, and so we're changing up Every Child Belongs for the month of July with a couple of mini-episodes.  When we started this podcast in January 2025, one in 36 kids were being diagnosed with autism. Just a few months ago, the CDC, Center for Disease Control, released new research which shows that one in 31 kids are being diagnosed with autism. And it made Kim think back on a couple episodes that we had with two moms who are parenting kids who are autistic.   Our very first episode was with Larah Roberts. She shared all kinds of great insight on how we can talk to our kids who are neurodivergent about things of faith.  One of the things I love that she talked about was God created us to know him. So the fact that somebody has a diagnosis or a difference, that doesn't change the fact that God created them to know him so we can march forward confidently. Larah's Episode:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/raising-autistic-disciples-larah-roberts/id1788322535?i=1000682404450 Larah's Book "How to Advocate & Stay Christian: For Parents of Special Kids" https://amzn.to/4mcTT9b The second episode by a mom raising an autistic kid is my friend, Kari Baker. Her son, Brady, is a teenager, and she shares how they navigated getting the diagnosis. And one of my favorite quotes in her book is she talks about how the first couple years, they were very much swimming in a private pool. Like they weren't sharing it with anybody. They weren't even using the term autism. She talks about how she navigated that, how she started being vulnerable and how God used that to really build her community. Kari's Episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/kind-families-kari-baker/id1788322535?i=1000685147742 Kari's Book "Finding KIND: Discovering Hope and Purpose While Loving Kids with Invisible Neurological Differences" https://amzn.to/451GV79 So if you are somebody who is parenting an autistic kid, loves an autistic kid, has a family in your circle that has an autistic kid, and you want to better understand what these families might be going through or how you can better support them, give those both a listen. Summer Reflection 1 : Kim Botto

It's the summer! Our routines change, the way we do things change, and so we're changing up Every Child Belongs for the month of July with a couple of mini-episodes.    As Kim has been reflecting, a recent episode that stands out was with Dr. Dwonna Thompson Lenoir and the three things she said we could do in order to be a safe place for kids.   One is, be curious. Like if a kid is behaving in a way that you don't understand, be curious.    Second thing is have a conversation. Talk with the child, not at the child.    Third is consistency. We've got to do what we say we're going to do. When we don't do what we say we're going to do, then trust is broken and the kid doesn't feel like they can depend on us.   Everybody have a great summer!

Building Inclusive Churches for Kids with Disabilities : Sandra Peoples

In this episode of Every Child Belongs, host Kim Botto sits down with her friend and fellow advocate Sandra Peoples.  Sandra shares her unique story of growing up in a family shaped by disability—her older sister had Down syndrome—and how that upbringing influenced her calling. Years later, Sandra and her husband became parents to two boys, one of whom was diagnosed with profound autism. This dual perspective—both as a sibling and now a parent—has fueled her lifelong work in encouraging families and guiding churches toward true inclusion. Sandra's book, Unexpected Blessings, unpacks the beauty and challenge of life in a special needs family. Now, Sandra focuses her energy on equipping churches to welcome and support all people. She shares how her own family asked bold questions when interviewing at churches, advocating for disability ministries from day one. Her story is one of grace, growth, and gospel-centered advocacy that every church leader and family needs to hear. If you're navigating disability in your own family or leading in a church wondering where to start, Sandra's insights are both inspiring and practical. From language learning to ministry-building, Sandra reminds us what's possible when we choose to see every person as a vital part of the body of Christ. In this heartfelt episode, Kim Botto is joined by Jamie Finn—foster and adoptive mom, author, and founder of Foster the Family. Jamie shares her candid journey into foster care and the powerful lessons she's learned along the way. With humility and wisdom, Jamie emphasizes that being "qualified" isn't about credentials—it's about love, faith, and a willingness to grow.   Jamie opens up about what it really means to step into the foster care world unprepared but faithful, highlighting the importance of trauma-informed care, surrounding yourself with community, and approaching others with grace. She gives insight into helping the broader community understand trauma-related behaviors and why vulnerability from parents should center on their emotions, not their children's stories.   Listeners will be encouraged by Jamie's perspective on protecting kids—not only physically but also emotionally and socially. She explains how sharing just the right amount of information with trusted caregivers can transform the way children are supported and understood. Her blend of deep compassion and practical advice makes this episode a must-listen for any foster, adoptive, or caregiving family.   Whether you're a seasoned foster parent or just beginning to explore the idea, Jamie's wisdom will inspire you to approach the journey with truth, gentleness, and a commitment to honor every child's story with care. Embracing Diversity in Faith & Disability : Dr. Terisha Lee

Welcome to Every Child Belongs, Kim Botto—an adoptive mom, grandma, and passionate advocate for children and teens with disabilities—explores how we can build spaces where every child feels seen, heard, and valued. With decades of experience in student and kids' ministry, Kim invites listeners into meaningful conversations with parents, educators, professionals, and community leaders to uncover real-life strategies for inclusion. Whether a child is neurodivergent, differently abled, or has experienced trauma, this podcast offers support and encouragement for anyone invested in their well-being.     In this episode, Kim talks down with Dr. Terisha Lee, a parent educator, practical theologian, and the founder of FamAuLee Dynamics. Dr. Lee shares her inspiring journey of advocating for families navigating the intersections of faith, race, and disability. From early volunteer work as a child to launching support groups for parents, Dr. Lee has been living out her passion for inclusivity long before she had the language to describe it. Her motto, "God's ability is greater than any disability," reflects her deep commitment to creating space for families often overlooked or misunderstood by society and even within faith communities.     Dr. Lee opens up about the joys and challenges families face when raising children with disabilities, including how preconceived ideas about love and patience are often transformed through this journey. She also addresses the harm caused by shame-based theology and misinformed support, encouraging communities to lead with kindness instead of offering unsolicited opinions on causes and cures. With wisdom and grace, Dr. Lee offers practical advice on how individuals and churches can better support families—not by fixing, but by showing up and making room.     Together, Kim and Dr. Lee remind us that it doesn't take a large budget or perfect plan to make a meaningful impact. Inclusion begins with the willingness to listen, to learn, and to adapt. Whether you're a parent, ministry leader, educator, or simply someone who cares, this conversation is filled with rich insights and gentle challenges that will leave you encouraged and better equipped to support every child's belonging.   "Boundless Hope for Every Child" by Kim Botto https://amzn.to/3Uj0MKg (affiliate links)
