"This Guy's an Incel" (Shoot the Piano Player)

Seth Halley joins to talk about the French New Wave meeting American Crime in Francois Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player ("Tirez sur le pianiste"). Follow Seth on Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/sasslord/ You can feel the French New Wave's influence on Tarantino, especially in the naturalistic and seemingly banal dialogue that adds texture to the film. I found this piece from Images helpful in framing my thoughts about the relationship between Shoot and Pulp Fiction. Cody's Letterboxd Peter's Letterboxd

  6. 2

"Sam Raimi is My Jesus" (Black Sabbath)

Special guest, filmmaker and local theater staffer Freddy Ruiz is on to discuss Black Sabbath ("I tre volti della paura"). Watch Freddy's horror short, The Killbilly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XGQBaeBitE Black Sabbath inspired the triptych structure of Pulp Fiction. Tarantino is quoted in Far Out magazine saying, "What Mario Bava did with the horror film in Black Sabbath, I was gonna do with the crime film.” On our next episode, we're watching Shoot the Piano Player ("Tirez sur le pianiste") directed by Francois Truffaut, a French New Wave film in conversation with American crime films and novels.
