MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF SHEN TAN - FISH HEAD CURRY

Makan Kakis, Chef Shen Tan is back with another surprising and delicious recommendation this week! Chicken Rice is arguably one of the most tasty and popular local dishes and while Chef Shen loves chicken rice too, when she visits Bugis Street Chuen Chuen Restaurant, it's not usually for their chicken rice! While theirs is very good, the dish that has captured Chef Shen's heart is the FISH HEAD CURRY! This spicy claypot gem is actually quite a well-kept secret...

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF ANTHONY YEOH - MORSELS LUNCHTIME NOODLES

This week, our Makan Kaki Chef Anthony Yeoh returns to recommend a lunchtime noodle treat that will surely satisfy. Morsels is known for their small plates and Omakase, but did you know they open for lunch with special noodle sets inspired by self-confessed Noodle Queen, chef-owner Petrina Loh's travels across Asia and her own culinary upbringing? There are 4 noodle specials on rotation currently, one per week, which cycles through - be sure you pop by to try a different one every week!

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & ANNETTE TAN - TONO PERUVIAN CEVICHERIA

This week, we're taking a culinary trip through our tastebuds to South America - Peru to be exact - with our Makan Kaki, FatFuku's Annette Tan. She recommends Tono Cevicheria, a fun, festive and of course, delicious restaurant by Chef Daniel Chavez, owner of Spanish eatery Ola Cocina Del Mar. Chef Daniel is from Peru and Tono Cevicheria serves classic Peruvian dishes as well as, as its name suggests, a wide range of fabulously fresh ceviches...

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF BJORN SHEN - SPECIAL FRUIT JUICE

Our Foodie Friend and champion of indulgent "Dude Food", Chef Bjorn Shen, returns to recommend something unexpected. From his reputation, you'd think he'd be telling us to try deep-fried mayonnaise or something like that, but the truth is, when he eats out he prefers lighter stuff. He's often on the hunt for something cold, refreshing and acidic, so check out his favourite fruit juice...

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF SHEN TAN - AW'S SIGNATURE NOODLES

Our Foodie Friend, Chef Shen Tan is partial to a bowl of Bak Chor Mee and recommends this stall run by an ex-policeman. Since quitting his crime-fighting job to pursue noodle perfection, Aw has been doing an excellent job with his signature minced pork noodles. Great tasting and great value at only $5 or $8 for a fully loaded bowl - not only do you get minced pork, but also abalone, clam, liver, prawn, quails egg, herh keow (fish dumpling), fishball & meatball. You can tell this isn't your typical Bak Chor Mee, but there's a nice balance between the vinegar, soya sauce & chilli, which makes for a really delicious, flavour-packed bowl...

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF PETRINA LOH - AH CHIANG PORRIDGE

As the days get wetter and we crave warming comfort food, our Makan Kaki Chef Petrina Loh of Morsels has the perfect dish to recommend. Definitely one of her childhood favourites, she has been patronising this old-school porridge stall since she was a little kid. And after eating there for 30 years, nostalgia plays a big part in her love for Ah Chiang's Porridge...

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF SHEN TAN - DELICIOUS CHINESE DUMPLINGS

This week, Chef Shen Tan returns with another great recommendation for those in need of a dumpling fix, but don't want to break the bank - just maybe a little sweat - heh! A lot of people like to go to Zion Road Hawker Centre for the famous Char Kway Teow, but next time you're there, be sure to look for this other outstanding dumpling stall located within the same hawker centre. Here's how Chef Shen discovered these delicious dumplings - she noticed a big group of people coming and going from that one stall. Like a typically curious Singaporean, she went to check it out and found that they were queueing for Guo Tie (potsticker dumplings) and Xiao Long Bao. Of course she had to try them and ordered up a couple of plates...

Makan Kakis with Denise, Chef Bjorn Shen & Chef Jason Jones Part 1 - Taco Libre!

We're having lots of fun chatting with our new Makan Kakis from Taco Libre: The All-Star Taco Showdown happening at Lucha Loco on Duxton Hill. Chef Jason Jones is the Culinary Director of The Loco Group and host, if you will, of the Michelin-starred & celebrity chefs who've been invited to create their ultimate tacos in this Taco-Off! Chef Bjorn Shen (of restaurants Artichoke & Bird Bird) was the first chef to kick off Taco Libre back in August, with his insane surf & turf Bacon & Crab taco. Since then, Chef Andrew Walsh of Cure, Chef Dave Pynt of Burnt Ends, Chef Rishi Naleendra of Cheek by Jowl, Chef Sam Aisbett of Whitegrass and Chef Clayton Wells of Blackwattle (his tacos are currently being served up at Lucha Loco) have also contributed their creative taco genius. But don't worry if you missed Chef Bjorn's taco, you can head on over to Lucha Loco on 14th November for the Grand Finale Event and all SIX tacos will be on the menu! Best of all, part of the proceeds from this campaign will be donated to the Singapore's Children Society.

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF SHEN TAN 1 - HER OWN REVOLUTION COFFEE NASI LEMAK

Greetings, Makan Kakis! This week, we welcome a new foodie friend to our rolling panel of culinary personalities and she is someone you might remember from her Maxwell Market, Wok & Barrel or Ujong days - she is Mod-Sin Chef Shen Tan, who's also Culinary Directory & creator of bespoke gastronomic experiences with Gastrogig. She's currently serving up an array of "greatest hit" dishes at Revolution Coffee over at Infinite Studios, in particular her fantastic Nasi Lemak with decadent toppings! Do scroll all the way down for more. In the mean time though, we're talking about her first foray into cooking, childhood culinary memories, Grandma's cooking, her approach to food, what her perfect meal would be (hint: it's spiky, pungent and absolutely fruitiluscious!) and where this Nasi Lemak aficionado goes for her own Nasi Lemak fix (promise, it's not her own kitchen - haha).

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & ONIATTA EFFENDI - NASI JENGANAN

This week sees the return of our Makan Kaki Batik Fashion fashion designer, avid home cook & self-confessed "Nasi Girl", Oniatta Effendi. There's not a day that she doesn't eat rice, so really, you should trust her when she says this Makan place that specializes in two unusual rice dishes is SO GOOD! Have you heard of Nasi Jenganan or Nasi Rawon? Frequent customers to Bedok Corner Food Centre may be familiar with these complete plate meals, but Denise confesses to never having heard of them till now. And after a trek to the East to try Oniatta's recommendation, you have a convert in Denise. Here's why: Both dishes come with the same ingredients - steaming hot rice, paru (fried beef lung), begedil & sambal sotong. The difference is in the wonderfully aromatic and tasty gravies poured over each rice dish...

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF PETRINA LOH - AMO CASUAL ITALIAN

There’s a new place that our Makan Kaki, Chef-Owner of Morsels, Petrina Loh has just tried along Hong Kong Street. It’s a pizza-pasta place started by Italian restaurateur Beppe Devito, of Il Lido fame and also, the man behind Baci, a recent 1 Michelin Star awardee. So, one would have high hopes for this casual eatery. Amò is a recent discovery, highly recommended by other chef friends and convenient for Chef Petrina, as she often runs errands along that stretch, picking up her traditional chinese herbs for her own restaurant from just across the street. If there’s parking, she always takes advantage to hop out and look for something good to eat. And boy, is Amò GOOD! How can you resist comfort food like Italian pizzas and pastas done exceedingly well?

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & FATFUKU'S ANNETTE TAN - FIREBAKE

This week, our Makan Kaki, homecook and founder of FatFuku, Annette Tan returns with another delicious recommendation from her home turf in the East of Singapore. Firebake - Woodfired Bakehouse & Restaurant is an awesome casual dining establishment that has seen packed houses and lots of return regulars since it opened earlier this year...

Makan Kakis with Denise & Chef Anthony Yeoh - Bird Bird & Artichoke

We're on our final episode in the month of August and as we conclude our Nation's birthday celebrations, our foodie friend Chef Anthony Yeoh, now Group Executive Chef of Bird Bird & Artichoke, returns with more delectable recommendations, starting with one of his go-to stalls when he's East-side at Bird Bird. One thing that can be said of Singapore, you can't get more unique than a stall with Geylang in its name that's not actually in Geylang! The same can be said of many others, but as Chef Tony observes, it's to preserve the brand & the reputation through the (albeit geographically incorrect) name! So back to the stall in the spotlight this week, if you love Hokkien Mee, you've got to get yourself to the Siglap area (East Coast Road, to be exact) for Geylang Lorong 29's delicious version. In a word, this Hokkien Mee is awesome, especially if you prefer yours "wet". Chef Tony loves it with a juicy coating of viscous sauce, thick and gelatnous from the liberal use of pork and prawn stock.

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE - NASI LEMAK BURGERS

Hello Makan Kakis! In recent weeks, our nation and its netizens have been all abuzz with opinions about MacDonald's NASI LEMAK BURGERS, which, to the disappointment of many, sold out in 2 weeks. Personally, I think a nasi lemak burger should at least contain nasi (rice) so come with me as we follow the coconut-fragranced trail of one other worthy nasi lemak burger, that could fill that empty space left by said fast food restaurant...

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & ANNETTE TAN - HUA YU WEE

This week, I’d thrilled to welcome yet another Makan Kaki, who’s long been an avid cook and entertainer, besides holding down her career as a food writer and award-winning book author. Please meet Annette Tan, who’s been making headlines after her private dining concept took off in a big way! She’s the brains, beauty and brawn behind FatFuku, which offers you the experience of dining at her home has she whips up a menu from her childhood memories. Today, she kicks off our run-up to National Day with her recommendation of a quinesstentially Singaporean-style restaurant in the East Coast… Tuned in for Chilli Crab, roasted chicken and more...

MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & ONIATTA EFFENDI - WARONG PARIAMAN

Oniatta Effendi, our gregarious foodie friend, gets even more animated when she talks about Nasi Padang because she is, as we have previously discovered, a self-confessed "Nasi Girl" - she has to have rice with every meal, including breakfast! As early as 7am, Oniatta can be found up and ready for a steaming hot plate of Nasi Padang from her favourite place in Singapore. Warong Pariaman has a very special place in her heart because this is where she met her husband Nizam and its also her favourite because of the nostalgia factor - shes been eating there with her family since she was a young child. Warong Nasi Pariaman has its beginning back in 1948 as a family-run corner coffeeshop at Kandahar Street. For the uninitaited, Nasi Padang hails from West Sumatra in Indonesdia and  Pariaman is the name of a city there. Essentially, you get hot, fluffy white rice that is paired with a variety of dishes, sides and condiments. If you enjoy rich flavours of coconut, chilli, lime, lemongrass and lengkuas (galangal), then you'll love Nasi Padang!

This week, our Makan Kaki Violet Oon (have you tried her latest Satay Bar & Grill yet?) wants to take us on a gastronomic experience to end all experiences - if you have a very special occasion coming up or looking for an extraordinary treat or if you only try fine dining once in your life, you might want to dine at one of the very best in Singapore, 3 Michelin starred Joël Robuchon Restaurant. MAKAN KAKIS WITH DENISE & CHEF ANTHONY YEOH - CANDLENUT CRAVINGS

We feature another hot favourite amongst chefs here in Singapore, especially if you want good old Peranakan comfort food served with both a nod to tradition and to imagination, innovation and modern technique. Our Makan Kakis Chef Anthony Yeoh says you'll get the best of both worlds at Candlenut, run by talented young chef Malcolm Lee. Previously located at Dorsett Residences near Outram MRT, this Michelin-starred restaurant has since moved into the swanky Dempsey area and yes, was arguably best known as the place where you could get served the rather unusual Buah Keluak ice cream! But Chef Malcolm is no one-trick pony and he uses Buah Keluak expertly in a couple of other dishes Chef Tony wants to highlight...
