The Collective: Airline Aristocracy and Award Season Madness

A week full of travel has The Collective debating their preferred airlines, with Sho and Darryl sharing why they are willing to pay for convenience and peace of mind. After a few obligatory Spirit Airlines jokes (not too much!), the conversation turned to awards season. Up first, the recent controversy at the BAFTA Awards, where “SINNERS” actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were caught up in an “impossible” situation. We share the lessons the controversy can teach the church. Namely, the difficulties, limitations and dangers of “inclusion.” Our admiration of “SINNERS” continues with a celebration of the films historic achievements at the Academy Awards. We discuss the relationship between Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan, pairing authenticity with excellence, and the value of surrounding yourselves with brilliant people.  Follow @goodcultureinstitute for updates about how you can watch The Good Culture Show live!  Tax Free Giving: https://goodcultureinstitute.com/contribute/ Discover: Learn more about Good Culture: www.Goodcultureinstitute.com  Join our Community: https://good-culture.mn.co/ Learn About our Cohorts: https://goodcultureinstitute.com/ Follow: Follow Good Culture: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodcultureinstitute/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582477391136 Follow Sho Baraka: https://linktr.ee/amishobaraka Follow Tryce Prince: https://linktr.ee/tryceprince Follow Ian O’Brian: https://linktr.ee/iobrien01

The Collective: Representation Matters: Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl, Trump’s Racist Video, and Jesse Jackson’s Legacy

How we represent our cultural group, our country, and our faith matters. The Collective is back again to discuss Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance that divided parts of Christendom, and give us a pathway for how we should we respond when our own “group” is not represented in cultural celebrations. Turning to the Winter Olympics and NBA All-Star weekend, we discuss why “USA v. The World” ignites a little bit of patriotism in all of us. Finally, they reflect on the recent racist depictions of the Obama’s posted by President Donald Trump and the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson Jr. Two figures who have represented their faith in drastically different ways. The Collective help us discern how to address racism in the world without letting it distract us from the good work we have been called to do.   Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl USA v. The Collective: ICE Shootings, Church Disruptions and Protest

The Collective’s eyes are still watching Minneapolis. Sho, Darryl, Ian, and Tryce open this episode with a discussion of rage and anger. They encourage us to filter out corrosive emotions that lead to sin, but make a case that Christians can express a righteous indignation in response to injustice. This leads to a discussion of the Cities Church protest. The Collective debates whether churches should be exempt as sites of protest, drawing on history as well as their own experiences as church leaders. They also discuss why Christians response to protests matters, and share their perspectives on the varying responses to the church protest two weekends ago. They end the episode by sharing their reflections on the most recent fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, the role of apathy and ignorance to the experiences of marginalized groups, and whether the events in Minneapolis will be a wake up call to the nation or “business as usual.”   Resources Mentioned: CATO Institute - A Brief History of U.S. Immigration Policy from the Colonial Period to the Present Day Sanctuaries of Segregation: The Story of the Jackson Church Visit Campaign by Carter Dalton Lyon Faces at the Bottom of the Well by Derrick Bell Tax Free Giving: https://goodcultureinstitute.com/contribute/ Discover: Learn more about Good Culture: www.Goodcultureinstitute.com  Join our Community: https://good-culture.mn.co/ Learn About our Cohorts: https://goodcultureinstitute.com/ Follow: Follow Good Culture: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodcultureinstitute/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582477391136 Follow Sho Baraka: https://linktr.ee/amishobaraka Follow Tryce Prince: https://linktr.ee/tryceprince Follow Ian O’Brian: https://linktr.ee/iobrien01

Sho, Anastacia, Darryl, Ian, and Tryce share their reactions to the tragedy, discussing the role of narrative, power, desensitization, and policing. The Collective also discusses the philosophy of nonviolent direct action, and draw on the philosophy to analyze various protest tactics we’ve seen employed.
