Hanging with Humans Podcast | Episode 30 | Bradley Richard
Episode 30: "Man in the Mirror"Bradley Richard, 42Williston, NDRecorded 12/30/2024What do you do after you’ve already walked through fire? We close the season 2 with a conversation that’s equal parts confession and compass, sitting with Bradley as he traces a path from early rebellion and first heartbreak to a string of devastating losses that fed a brutal addiction—and the moment he chose to live. He talks about an intentional overdose, seven minutes gone, and the treatment-room wake-up call that shattered his assumptions about who addiction affects. Twenty-one years later, he’s still sober, and he’s honest about what that really takes. We go beyond sobriety and into mental health: how unguarded thoughts can undo progress, why vulnerability is a daily practice, and how “time equals love” reframed his role as a partner and father. Bradley shares the story he rarely tells—a daughter he didn’t know for two years, a preacher father who spent everything to find him, and the unbearable loss that followed just as recovery began. He also walks us through a home invasion in Seattle, a split-second self-defense decision, and the legal and emotional aftermath that could have sent him back to using. Instead, he doubled down on healing.Along the way, we talk parenting, family court, and the skills we owe our kids: independence, discernment, and the courage to leave harm. We unpack jealousy, betrayal, and the quiet ways fear of investment destroys connection. This is a raw, grounded look at recovery, grief, and accountability—built on friendship, the power of showing up, and the belief that presence is the only proof of love.If this conversation moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs it. Your words can help others find the courage to keep going.I can't find the feeling that comes to mind when listening to this for the first time. But I will find the words for this one day. That chance meeting turned into an unlikely friendship—and a story worth telling.Jason’s early life began in Indianapolis’ Haughville neighborhood, shadowed by family tragedy before he was even born. Despite earning multiple basketball scholarships, his energy gravitated toward hustling more than academics. After a run as a successful mortgage broker, he plunged into the “scam game”—a decision that would catch up with him later. At 40, Jason faced his first prison sentence. Six months in solitary confinement during COVID forced him into a brutal kind of introspection. Hanging with Humans Podcast | Episode 29 | Alejandro Soto
Episode 29: "How to Heal a Broken System"Alejandro Soto, 32Pikes Peak, CoWhat started as a pre interview: became the podcast itself. From the streets of Sinaloa to the cells of Colorado's prison system, Alejandro's life story reads like a harrowing thriller – except every word is painfully true. Arriving in America at age 11 without knowing how to read or write in any language, he found himself navigating a school system that placed him in kindergarten classes as a pre-teen, setting the stage for years of misunderstanding and marginalization. The true nightmare began when, at just 16 years old, Alejandro was framed for attempted murder and thrown into adult county jail. Despite eventually being cleared when the actual perpetrator confessed, the justice system continued to punish him. Years later, a vindictive employer would orchestrate another setup, resulting in nine years of imprisonment on drug charges – even though court transcripts explicitly stated he was cleared. What elevates Alejandro's narrative beyond a tale of injustice is his remarkable spiritual transformation. Within prison walls, he educated himself, earned his GED, and began a profound journey of self-discovery. Cannabis emerged as his unexpected healing tool, helping him process trauma and eventually even enabling him to help family members overcome addiction and negative spiritual forces. Now focused on creating stability for his young son, Alejandro speaks with striking clarity about the distinction between opposing government systems and challenging those who govern unjustly. His insights into America's "mingle system" of justice – where cases are decided over coffee between judges and prosecutors rather than through evidence – offer a sobering look at institutional failures that continue to impact countless lives.Have you ever wondered what happens when the system gets it wrong? Alejandro's story will challenge everything you thought you knew about justice in America while demonstrating the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds.If anyone is interested in taking his case, feel free to reach out. Thank you very much for lending me your time Alejandro.-------I've been humbled by the last few conversations had. I learned a whole bunch. I hope we can all find it in us to try and understand, instead of judge. To always ask questions, and continue to seek answers. There is much more outside of those 4 walls. so just be kind. <3 You write your story. As season 3 crawls its way towards the end. With a few episodes left to go. Hanging with Humans Podcast | Episode 28 | Jeremiah Lowrie
Episode 28: "The story of Jeremiah & Kimber"Jeremiah Lowrie, 44Helena, MtWhat happens when the systems designed to protect children fail? In this raw and unfiltered conversation, I welcome Jeremiah, a father locked in a years-long custody battle that exposes troubling flaws in our family court system.Jeremiah shares his journey as a dedicated father to eight-year-old Kimber, describing how he went from being the family's primary caregiver to fighting for the right to protect his daughter. The love between father and daughter radiates throughout their story— Jeremiah recounts how his attempts to report alleged abuse led not to investigation, but to his own persecution. Through it all, Jeremiah maintains that the courts have never allowed him to speak his truth. The conversation explores how initial court filings create immediate advantages, how allegations can be weaponized, and how those without financial resources or legal knowledge are particularly vulnerable. The mental health toll becomes painfully evident as Jeremiah describes the support mechanisms that keep him functioning through this ordeal. His powerful closing advice to others facing similar battles—"Hold the line"—serves as both rallying cry and survival strategy. This episode isn't just one man's story; it's a window into how custody battles can devastate families and a call for greater accountability in a system where children's wellbeing should always come first. Listen, share, and join the conversation about how we can better protect our most vulnerable.Jeremiah wanted to dedicate this episode to Danielle Moore.https://www.ktvh.com/news/suspect-identified-in-downtown-helena-officer-involved-shooting Support the showContact & Info:www.hangingwithhumans.comhttps://poplme.co/hash/P5oM9JFj/1/dashSupport the Podcast:https://gofund.me/2a99e9b7Video Podcast :https://www.YouTube.com/@hangingwithhumanshttps://rumble.com/c/c-2507620Social Media:https://www.instagram.com/hangingwithhumanshttps://www.tiktok.com/@hangingwithhumansThank you so much for taking the time out of your important life to listen, It means the world to me.#HangingWithHumans #Podcast #HWHPIn honor of those who served our country. ** Pre-interview process ** | Thomas Egbert
My Pre-Interview ProcessA day before—sometimes the day of—the podcast, I carve out several hours to sit with my guest in complete intimacy. No cameras, no microphones, just my notebook and two humans sharing a space. With nothing but curiosity and a pen, I guide my guest through their story, capturing the raw details that will become our roadmap. We explore the emotional landscape, identify the moments that changed everything, and uncover the universal truths hidden within their personal journey. Some of the most profound conversations of my life have emerged from these sessions. There's something sacred about this process to me—the trust a human places in me to handle their story with care, the vulnerability required to excavate painful memories, the honor of witnessing someone's truth unfold in real time.I'm endlessly grateful for the souls that let me capture their stories. Decade-Long Fight for FreedomWhat happens when the system designed to protect us becomes the very thing that destroys us?Thomas Egbert was 21 years old—a certified mechanic with no criminal history and everything to live for—when he was sentenced to 20 years for a crime he didn't commit. While the actual shooter walked away with a six-year plea deal and surviving three. Thomas found himself facing two decades in maximum security hell. For seven brutal years, he navigated the razor's edge of a level-four prison yard. Racial riots. Daily violence. The systematic stripping away of hope. All while his young children grew up without their father. But Thomas refused to surrender. In the darkest corners of that concrete tomb, he found unlikely mentors—lifers who pointed him toward the prison law library with words that would change everything: "Nobody's going to get you out of here but yourself."For years, Thomas became his own lawyer, studying case law by day and dodging violence by night. Appeal after appeal, motion after motion, until finally—after serving over ten years for someone else's crime—his conviction was overturned. But perhaps the most remarkable twist was yet to come. While Thomas fought for his freedom, his first love discovered his name while working as a child support enforcement officer. She wrote. She waited. She believed. Today, they're building the life that was stolen from them.Have you ever wondered how someone survives losing everything unjustly and still finds the strength to rebuild? Listen to this raw, unflinching journey through our broken justice system—and proof that even in our darkest moments, hope can find a way to survive. Tom's story offers a raw look at resilience in the face of catastrophic injustice. At just 21 years old, Tom watched his promising career as a lead auto technician crumble when he was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for a crime committed by someone else. Knowing he was innocent, Tom made the difficult decision to fight his case. This is his story.. Behind prison walls, Tom navigated a brutal environment defined by racial segregation, violence, and a complete absence of rehabilitation. Yet in this darkness, he found unexpected mentorship from an Aryan Brotherhood member with legal expertise who gave him crucial advice: "Ain't nobody going to get you out of this shit but you." Taking this to heart, Tom taught himself the law, filing appeals and motions while working for mere cents per hour in the prison kitchen. The story takes a remarkable turn when Tom's childhood sweetheart discovers him through a letter crossing her desk at the child support enforcement office. After reading his case transcripts and recognizing the miscarriage of justice, she stands by him throughout his remaining sentence, becoming his anchor to the outside world.Tom's mechanical genius — becomes his salvation. From rebuilding a 1967 Camaro as a youth to his current work restoring vehicles and equipment, Tom's ability to fix broken things serves as both livelihood and metaphor for his own life journey. Now rebuilding his life day by day, Tom faces the ongoing challenge of employment discrimination due to his record, while fighting for stability and trying to create a meaningful future with his wife—whose family has disowned her for choosing to be with him. Listen to Tom's powerful testimony of perseverance, and discover what it truly means to rebuild a life from the ground up.There was a moment in the conversation, when Tom is explaining what was going through his young fragile mind. When sitting in his cell waiting and preparing for violence to erupt as soon as his cell door opens. I had chills running through me, as I listened to this story of a young man doing what had to be done in order to survive the next years of his adult life. After the conversation, Tom said to me. “Rj.. Episode 22: “Redemption comes in many forms”Chris Langer, 42Glendive, MT(Video episode)https://youtu.be/B0ZWRhYLkeo?si=jrGP__CHD6kC-frdHave you ever wondered if someone can truly recover after decades of trauma, addiction, and incarceration? Chris Langer's powerful story proves that transformation is not only possible—it's within reach for anyone willing to do the work.At just four years old, Chris experienced unimaginable trauma—being chained in bathrooms when his mother was gone and locked in sheds as punishment. These early experiences shaped a life trajectory that would include approximately 15 years behind bars, beginning when he was just eight years old for running away from home. Rather than questioning why a child would choose to brave the freezing Minnesota winter rather than stay home, the system labeled him with oppositional defiant disorder, setting in motion a cycle that would define decades of his life.Through raw and unflinching conversation, Chris reveals how childhood trauma created protective mechanisms that both saved and sabotaged him. Patterns he maintained until recent years. The substances that once helped him survive eventually became the very things destroying every aspect of his life. The turning point came through profound loss—the death of his infant daughter. As Chris describes it, "My rock bottom has a basement." Yet from these depths emerged a determination to build something different. What makes this episode particularly powerful is Chris's practical wisdom about recovery. After nearly ten years actively pursuing healing through various modalities including EMDR therapy and medication-assisted treatment, he shares specific strategies that have helped him maintain three years of sobriety and build a stable life with a loving partner, reconnection with family, and even grandchildren. For anyone struggling with trauma, addiction, or mental health challenges, this conversation offers both hope and practical guidance. As Chris says, "Just keep walking, no matter what... If you're not doing something to recover, you're doing something to stay sick." His story proves that it's never too late to begin again.Thank you to Chris & Sam for being such wonderful guests and humans <3 Support the showContact & Info:www.hangingwithhumans.comhttps://poplme.co/hash/P5oM9JFj/1/dashSupport the Podcast:https://gofund.me/2a99e9b7Video Podcast :https://www.YouTube.com/@hangingwithhumanshttps://rumble.com/c/c-2507620Social Media:https://www.instagram.com/hangingwithhumanshttps://www.tiktok.com/@hangingwithhumansThank you so much for taking the time out of your important life to listen, It means the world to me.#HangingWithHumans #Podcast #HWHPIn honor of those who served our country. Hanging with Humans Podcast | Episode 20 | Sam Ames
Episode 20: “Melancholy melodies”Sam Ames, 37Glendive, Mt(Recorded: 12/27/24)On this episode of the Hanging with Humans podcast, we sit down with Sam Ames, who shares her captivating life story rooted in the musical beats of Alberton, Montana. Growing up surrounded by melodies, from her father's youthful triumph at the gong show to the vibrant tunes played by his mother in local bars, Sam's childhood was a symphony of highs and lows. We spoke of navigating the challenging landscapes of familial addiction.(A topic that hits home for me) Sam opens up about confronting the shadows of her past and the impact it had on her relationships. She candidly recounts her mother's struggles with substance abuse and the rippling effects that strain family bonds. Out of all the life stories told on this podcast thus far, this one has many similarities to the way I grew up.“It’s never too late to make a change.”Is something that I wholeheartedly believe in, and are words that I udder often. Sam's journey underscores that completely as we discuss the themes of recovery and healing. We both found the importance of camaraderie in high school sports to play the pivotal role of mentorship during dire times. There’s a common theme between us. The powerful narrative of overcoming darkness to find strength and reconciliation. The journey doesn't end there as Sam explores paths of redemption and purpose. The support and the significance of building a stable, loving environment for her own children. Is the redemption that had been sought out for years after years of vicious cycles of being in the grips of addiction. Towards the end of this episode. We dive into the complexities of mental health in the digital age, where we share personal coping strategies, including grounding practices and the importance of stepping back from the pressures of social media. We speak of the profound gratitude found in everyday joys. That can be sometimes taken for granted. & The importance of moving forward. I would like to thank Sam & her wonderful boyfriend Chris (who will be interviewed soon). For taking the time out of their busy lives to come spend their Friday evening with me.Stay tuned, I have plans for a few more episodes to be recorded before the new year. In this episode of Hanging with Humans, Jorge takes us through the pivotal moments of his childhood, the crucial decisions that kept him on a path away from drugs, and how mental preparedness played a vital role in his resilience. His story is a compelling reminder of how our environment and the choices we make can impact our personal growth and opportunities.Once in Grand Junction, Jorge faced the formidable challenges of adapting to a new culture and language. Jorge's journey to land ownership is fueled by a deep connection to his family and their history with tree farming. His experiences shed light on the importance of adaptability and the relentless pursuit of new opportunities, proving that change can indeed lead to empowerment and personal fulfillment. The conversation takes a heartfelt turn as Jorge shares his transformative journey with therapy and mental health. We explore the cultural taboos that often prevent men from seeking help and how Jorge's initial skepticism turned into a profound appreciation for open communication. Hanging with Humans Podcast | Episode 5 | Marcos Diaz
Episode 5: "From the cradle to the grave"Marcos Diaz, 33Helena, MTFull video episode: https://youtu.be/CAPKugilNOYIn this episode, I sat down and talked with a really good friend of mine Marcos Diaz. (In my living room) We grew up together in the same place, and yet our lives went in very different directions. We talked extensively about what it’s like growing up in the 209. Marcos is a hustler in every sense of the word. If there’s one thing I can tell you about this human, he has a insane work ethic and upholds the meaning of Loyalty to the highest degree. Marcos has lived a crazy life, and has been in some situations that are hard to fathom. His story starts out with having his first child at fifteen, and then you just have to listen to the to the rest grasp it.There aren’t a whole lot of options for humans coming out of that place. My road was the military, that’s what got me out. Marcos had sports, but taking on real life adult responsibilities at a young age changed that path for him. I hope you guys can take something away from Marco’s story. By the way, I’ve seen Marcos like twice since I moved from Cali. (2010)It has been years since we talked, and when I asked him if he would come down, catch up, and do a podcast if he was passing through. He replied “hell mf yea” and drove 8 hours out of his way to do that for me. People make sacrifices for the ones they care about, I believe he did it because in his heart he knows I would do the same without batting an eye. This is the first podcast done with somebody that I grew up with from back home. (can you spot any similarities)Very thankful to sit down with my brother. Smoking blunts and choppin' it up, like the good old days. For those who didn’t know me, or were not a part of my life back then. Here’s a little bit of insight as to what life was like for me growing up.Marcos wanted to shout out his homie Young Iggz from the 209.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoapnIFeyuYTurns out this music video was filmed like around the corner from my house growing up lol.Check it out for a visual reference to where I spent the first like 20 years of my life.and lastly R.I.P. Hanging with Humans Podcast | Episode 4 | Zoë Sanders
Episode 4: "A line in the sand"Zoë Sanders, 24Helena, MTFull video episode: https://youtu.be/vUXdHLk9ciUIn this episode I sat down and talked with one of my best friends Zoë Sanders.I've known Zoë for many years, but I never knew much about her past. We talk about her journey over from South Africa to the United States. Where she grew up in the religious group Jehovah's Witnesses. Zoë's life within the organization ended at age 18. The nature of being thrown into the world as an adult with no support system can be a dark thing. Our minds are so fragile as children, and sometimes our spirits can be broken before we reach the age of understanding right from wrong. I have a lot of respect for Zoë. She has battled through many things in life, starting at a young age. Life threw things at her like teen pregnancy, followed by the suicide of the father of her child. She had to take on the responsibility of taking care of her daughter by herself. Zoë is a fighter in every sense of the word, I am very grateful to have a person like her in my corner. She is currently off traveling the country chasing her dreams and experiencing everything thing this world has to offer. I know her story is going to help somebody somewhere. Because, I know people close to me with very similar upbringings, including myself.I asked what came to mind for the title of the episode. She told me "A line in the sand""You can waste your lives drawing lines or you can live your life crossing them." - I was given lines my entire life, but now I am the one pushing past them. I saw myself being held back by the opinions of others. That isn't a part of my life anymore. We are so much more capable then we think we are, draw a line in the sand and crawl until you get there. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you get there.Thank you to Zoë! Hanging with Humans Podcast | Episode 3 | Baylie Flynn
Episode 3: "Hurt people, Hurt people." Baylie Flynn, 25Helena, MTIn this episode, I talk with Baylie Flynn. This was the first episode done in the alternate recording space. It was chill vibes.Baylie has become a good friend of mine over this last year. She is a super smart and strong willed individual with a heart of gold, haha. She has also been helping me out on the Podcast pretty much from the beginning, with the use of her training in Graphic Design & Computer Science and she is currently finishing her Bachelors in Accounting. The consequences of the vicious cycle that is "Hurt people, hurting people" is what spawned the spontaneous podcast recording without any video. I don't think this will be a common theme going forward. The way this podcast came about: I had a nice little mental episode/breakdown. Starting on a day that would have been a start to a beautiful week long vacation. In the process of a overwhelming panic/breathing attack, came a moment of clarity. With clarity came an assortment different ideas and different ways to approach my current life problems/stresses. Some major self exploration was fueled by some psilocybin and mountain therapy. It helped free my mind from what was hindering me in that moment. The free mind is capable of so much. Knowing my usual manic state, Baylie was not deterred from coming and recording a podcast with me at 11pm. She knew if I actually asked that late, that it was important for me. That's what good friends do, they show up for you when you need them. In this episode Baylie opens up about the struggles she dealt with after the loss of her fifteen year old sister Ashley. Ashley was Baylie's best friend in the world, so I feel very honored that she told her story here. We touched on all parts of metal health in one way or another in this episode. So I think there is a lot in here that people can relate to. There were moments in her life where her spirit seemed broken, but she battled through and is now making a beautiful life for her and her son Casey. For the relatively small amount of time that I've known Baylie, I've seen enough strength and courage to last a lifetime. This gal is a real fighter, and I think her story proves that. You never know what the person next to you has gone through, the more we understand that, the more we can understand each other. Baylie would like the world to know that this podcast is for Ashley Ryan Flynn.I hope somebody can take something away from Baylie's story to help benefit their own.Thank you to Baylie! I was actually very nervous!Edgar made it really easy for me to get comfortable. Listening to his story of growing up as a kid in Cuba with dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. Edgar is a very passionate strong willed individual that I am very lucky I had the chance to sit down with. His story takes him from growing up in Cuba. Immigrating to Florida, with the hopes of getting the rest of his family there, as well as to one day play professional baseball. Edgar's life took many different paths, but the one commonality was perseverance. This is what never giving up, or taking no for an answer looks like. It was a pleasure to sit down with such a gracious kind human being. Towards the end of the podcast Edgar spoke about In vitro fertilization, known as IVF, is a procedure used to help you get pregnant. Edgar shares him and his wife's experience with IVF. We met for the first time a few weeks prior. He saw my vision exactly as I do, and gave me a ton of confidence leaving that little meeting. Edgar is a great coach, who has coached at the highest level. Hard work pays off, is a good take away from this one. I left that podcast very fired up and inspired. I hope somebody can take something away from Edgar's story. Thank you to Edgar! A person I now call a friend. I would plug all your social media but you're just doing your thing without it. Hanging with Humans Podcast | Episode 1 | St. Paul's UMC Youth Group
This Is the official Introductory first episode of the Hanging with Humans podcast.Episode One: "Rjeezy meets the KatyCats"St Paul's United Methodist ChurchHelena, MtFull video episode: https://youtu.be/AhTWcbbrYhcFirst one!I decided to make my first public speaking event, my first official published podcast episode. The point of this "Motivational" presentation was to speak to high school kids from a church youth group about "Finding your worth" and "Finding your purpose". Those who know me, know that me and religion go together like two things that don't actually go together. But I do believe that I am a spiritual person. Some say those two things go hand and hand. I have no clue, but either way. I went in not knowing what to expect. I left with a whole new perspective on many things. I do believe I learned much more from these young adults, then they probably learned from me. I did kind of a post interview sort of thing on how I felt about my first public speaking event. So the video starts with that. It looks terrible because i'm dumb and not good at editing yet. But hey, we all have to start somewhere.I want to say a big thank you to my friend Molly and the kids over at St. Paul's United Methodist Church youth group. So thankful for the opportunity to come out and talk about the podcast.
