    Suffer the Little Children

Recorded Live at Strange Escapes, Waverly Hills Event Pennhurst Asylum may have opened with the best of intentions, but it didn’t end up that way. In its 79 years of operation, the asylum was characterized by the harshest of patient mistreatment. Its more than 10,000 residents were subjected to what the Philadelphia Inquirer described as “medical experimentation, cruel punishments, and constant threats to physical and psychological well-being.” Residents were trapped, forced into labor against their will, unable to leave, out of control of the most basic elements of their own lives. And that was the adults. Children under five years old were kept in cages, lying in their own filth for days on end. As one newspaper put it in 1972, Pennhurst Asylum was “the shame of Pennsylvania.” Many inmates stayed there as long as 35 years. And some never left. The hotel remembers the town’s dark history. At least, the ghosts inside it do.

Bisbee, Arizona was prosperous for the mine owners, but for the miners themselves, things were different. They worked difficult, dangerous jobs for minimal pay. In the midst of all the controversy and strikes, rose a luxurious hotel with a pool, billiard room, bar, restaurant, and today - lots and lots of ghosts. I’m Going to Get Even With Them. I’m Going to Fry Their Brains

Early in the morning of December 20, 1964, flames blazed against the darkened sky, erupting from a fire in a home in Palmyra, New York. The house burned so intensely that the city’s fire chief told a contemporary newspaper, “When we got there, the flames were shooting into the middle of the street.” When all was said and done, six children and their mother died in the blaze. Today, the Palmyra Museum stands in that very spot, and may be one of the most haunted locations in the country. The Disembodied Voice of a Child Cries Out in the Night, "Mama, Mama!"

Florida’s most haunted home has seen more than its fair share of tragedies. Inside the walls of the May-Stringer House have been sickness and suffering, untimely deaths of spouses, the enslavement of more than 50 people, and the tragic loss of children who died so young they barely even knew their parents. Some say the spirit of a little girl wanders the house to this day, looking for the mother who died bringing her into the world. Sitting at the end of a long, tree-lined driveway, the White Hill Mansion in Fieldsboro, New Jersey has always held secrets.
