History Reinvented: The Stairs to Nowhere
by Ian Stewart
In this new season of History Reinvented we’ll uncover stories of Pine Camp. In the late 19th century, the 160 acres along the northern border of the city of Richmond was known as the City Farm or City Jail Farm. Later on, Richmonders who were battling contagious diseases, including smallpox and tuberculosis, were isolated on the property. But because this was the post Civil War South and the height of the Jim Crow era, only white patients were treated until eventually a separate house was built for the city’s Black population. When vaccinations were finally able to stem the diseases, the land and buildings began to take on new life. And while the whites only building remained, the Black ward was torn down. It’s here where mysteries are being uncovered and the history of those patients and the land itself is being rediscovered. And it’s here where the land is taking on a new life which will allow new stories to emerge. You

New Podcast coming from Big Soap Productions
Send us Fan MailI'll be creating another History Reinvented Podcast soon (on Belle Isle), which I'm looking for sponsors for. In the mean, I'm about to launch a new (and yet another) podcast---the World Music Show - Interviews from the Archives. For almost two decades I hosted a World Music Show on a public radio station, where during that time, I interviewed dozens of musicians, authors and filmmakers. These include Angelique Kidjo, Jack Johnson, Los Lobos, Vieux Farka Toure and More. You can also listen to my music show on Mixcloud. So keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, make sure you're listening to the Mechanics of Transportation/ RVA Bike Scene and watching my dorky videos on YouTube at IanStewartCycles. Special Update - Cemetery Mystery
Send us Fan MailSo, it’s been awhile since season two of History Reinvented, Pine Camp, the stairs to nowhere wrapped up. But as luck would have it, I’ve got a few bonus episodes coming up.It all started because of listener Andrew Phinney. He grew up all over RVA and he’s a history buff too. He got in touch with me about another story related to Pine Camp, specifically the cemetery near where some of the new bike trails are. Now comes the time for me to think about Season three. But I need your help…I’m debating a couple of areas to dive into the history and future of. Those include Brown’s Island and Belle Isle which have a rich and troubled history with the city but are turning into a special space for the city; And it includes the Nickel Bridge, which just celebrated its centennial—that could be lumped in with some transportation history as well, such as the rail cars that once moved Richmonders. What are your thoughts? What would you like to hear about? You can let me know in a few different ways—either on my Buzzsprout fan page; or in the comments wherever you listen or via my email, which is in the show notes. And here’s where else I need your help…I do these on my own, I’ve got no sponsors or corporate backers–if you are interested in sponsoring the next season, let me know.Or if you want to help, I’ve created a new Buy me Coffee link that allows you to help support my efforts as a freelance reporter and podcaster. https://buymeacoffee.com/ian_stewartOr you can Venmo me a few dollars at Ian-Stewart-82 to buy me some coffee or gas. A Diabolical Piece of Land
Send us Fan MailThe conclusion Kit West knows his trails in Richmond. He’s a certified trail groomer and designer for the city’s parks and rec department. Usually he and his team just help maintain the trails but at Pine Camp a few months ago, I caught him working on his trail design–one that would connect the glass loop trail to the community center. He has to use a tractor to make the trail into something functional, basically taking mounds of dirt and roots that are full of twists and tree roots and yes, historical trash and turning it into something cool–something any kid who grew up riding BMX bikes on homemade trails would love to do as an adult.History Reinvented is created solely by me, Ian Stewart. I’m a freelance journalist, and a longtime, former public radio reporter. I’ve got no sponsors at this time–so, if you’d like to sponsor this podcast series, let me know. I’d love to do other deep dives into the history of Richmond or surrounding areas. If you like History Reinvented and want to support my efforts then please consider subscribing to it . You can also help support my efforts by sharing this podcast on all your socials and by rating it and leaving a comment .If you do subscribe I’ll be sure to thank you at the end of each episode. Thanks! That particular connection is open now so go check out Kit’s work.Well, that’s it for this season of History Reinvented: Pine Camp, the stairs to nowhere. I’d like to thank everyone who I interviewed for this, who took their time to talk with me about Pine Camp, including Professor Marie Vergamini, and her students and the Parks and Recreation Department. And Gray Montrose, for suggesting this as a topic.I hope to be back soon with another season of History Reivented–I’m debating diving into the history and future of either Brown’s island and Belle Isle or maybe the nickel bridge. Let me know what you’d like to learn more about. And if you know any sponsors or are one who’d like to sponsor this podcast, which I do all on my own, let me know. Historical Trash
Send us Fan MailOn this installment of History Reinvented, Pine Camp, the stairs to nowhere, I walk a new bike and running trail on the edge of Pine Camp, right near John Marshall High School with Emily Monroe, a long time bike advocate and all around cool person in Richmond. Your Stay in Pine Camp
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of History Reinvented: Pine Camp the stairs to nowhere, I take us inside the Library of Virginia. It’s here that the great Librarians pulled a special pamphlet from their collection. It’s called "Your Stay at Pine Camp." I say pamphlet but it’s got more than 20 plus pages of information, including drawings of stick figures, and a glossary of terms to help patients. It was put together and distributed by the Richmond Department of Public Health. The tiny booklet is not available for checkout, so I could only read it in one of the rooms at the library, which is why this shortened episode is just me, talking above a whisper because, well you know, I’m in a library.History Reinvented is created solely by me, Ian Stewart. Mystery Stairs
Send us Fan MailOn this episode of History Reinvented – Pine Camp, the stairs to nowhere, VCU professor Marie Vergamini and her students, who’ve been studying and digging into the history of Pine Camp, literally, take me to where they found the stairs to nowhere. Meet the Researchers
Send us Fan MailOn this episode of History Reinvented – Pine Camp, the stairs to nowhere, we meet the team doing the research to uncover the history of the Black Hospital, which was torn down basically as soon as the Tuberculosis pandemic began to subside once vaccines became available. The white hospital, at least parts of it, still stands today–though, the building is boarded up.One of the highlights of our introduction to each other and what they’re doing, is how dedicated they are to digging up the history of the place and the people, like the Black Nurses, who were integral to getting Black patients to seek treatment.I met Marie Vergamini and her students on a typical humid day a few months ago at Pine Camp. We camped ourselves at a picnic table near the entrance to this really cool trail that weaves around some outdoor sculptures and some recently installed historical markers. So pull up a seat and meet Marie and her students. If you like History Reinvented and want to support my efforts then please consider subscribing to it by clicking the link in the show notes. Pine Camp Bonus Episode - The Other Sanatorium
Send us Fan MailIn this bonus episode on the History of Pine Camp, Christina Vida of the Valentine Museum, talks about another Sanitorium that was erected to battle Tuberculosis in 1908. It was in Church Hill — and it was created in part with the help of a citizen who many residents were not a fan of. In fact, you could say, her doing what she did was the start of the NIMBY movement (Not in my backyard). And it was in a place that is now an elementary school. This bonus episode of History Reinvented is to spur you into becoming a member or by sending me a monetary tip via Venmo at Ian-Stewart-82. City Jail Farm becomes tuberculosis hospital
Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we’ll talk with Christina Vida from the Valentine Museum in Richmond, Va, who talks about Frances Branch Scott, founder of Sheltering Arms Hospital, who organized a meeting in her home in 1909 to address the lack of quality treatment for tuberculosis patients in Richmond. And we’ll hear about what preceded Pine Camp.In the late 19th century, the 160 acres along the northern border of the city of Richmond was known as the City Farm or City Jail Farm. Later on, Richmonders who were battling contagious diseases, including smallpox and tuberculosis, were isolated on the property. But because this was the post Civil War South and the Jim Crow era, only white patients were treated (pause) until eventually a separate house was built for the city’s Black population. When vaccinations were finally able to stem the diseases, the land and buildings began to take on new life. And while the whites only building remained, the Black ward was torn down. It’s here where mysteries are being uncovered and the history of those patients and the land itself is being rediscovered. Wrap up & So Long
Send us Fan MailI want to start this off — this wrap up – about producing this two part series on the historic Mayo Bridge and Island in Richmond, Va by thanking all 1000-plus listeners, downloaders since I published the first episode last December. It came after a time that I was let go from my job at a public radio station, where I was a transportation reporter, a general assignment reporter, a fill in anchor and the host of a long running music show. So give this a listen.------------------But even though the podcast is done, I could surely use some help from you. You can Venmo me a few dollars at Ian-Stewart-82 to buy me some coffee or gas. And more importantly, you can also keep supporting the show by rating it and sharing it around your socials because soon, I’m going to have to stop paying for keeping the uploads on buzzsprout—the place I use to post and house older episodes. And If you’re a sponsor who may be interested in helping me produce other episodes on the History and Future of Richmond, then please do reach out. I’d love to tell more stories like these. And I may dive into something else that’s interesting an needs attention–you can also give me some ideas too. Be sure to check out my other podcast, called The Mechanics of Transportation in which I talk to local Richmond and national experts about all things transportation. And, if you like music, check out Ian’s World O’ Music show on Mixcloud. For 17 years, I had a world music show on a local public radio station, where I also happened to report on transportation topics. Plus, you can always look for my freelance work on outlets like Virginia Mercury, The Richmonder, Richmond Magazine and on the podcast Full Disclosure with Roben Farzad–where recently, I guest hosted an interview with 80s music icon Thomas Dolby.History Reinvented is a Big Soap Production. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I hangout with Richard Hankins, Executive Director of Partnership for Smarter Growth, who are invested in making sure the updated Mayo Bridge is equitable for everyone–not just cars, but bicyclists, pedestrians, people who fish, and buses — and they want to help make sure there’s access to what will be a new and improved Mayo Island.History Reinvented is a two part podcast series that takes you on a trip around the Mayo Bridge and Mayo Island in Richmond Virginia, from its early beginnings to what the future holds for this historic part of the city’s Landscape. As a freelance reporter, I could surely use some help with you subscribing and supporting this podcast. If you can’t subscribe, you can rate it and share it around your socials because the more the word gets out the better it helps me keep going. Heck, you could even Venmo me a few dollars at Ian-Stewart-82 to buy me some coffee. If you’re a sponsor who may be interested in helping me produce other episodes on the History and Future of Richmond, then please do reach out. I’d love to tell more stories like these.Be sure to check out my other podcast, called The Mechanics of Transportation in which I talk to local Richmond and national experts about all things transportation. And, if you like music, check out Ian’s World O’ Music show on Mixcloud. Ospreys & Asphalt
Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I take a last walk on Mayo Island with Nissa Richardson, Deputy Director for Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities through locked gates, past two osprey’s nesting high above on a light pole, through another fence, down a trail in hopes of reaching the mighty James River. The trail is dense with foliage – If only I had brought my machete. On this small trek, we talk about how this iconic island will be transformed into one of the newest, walkable parks in the Richmond landscape in just a short time–and in government speak–that’s saying a lot. The Public Speaks
Send us Fan MailRichmonders love their public meetings–which is a good thing because when city officials or groups hold them, it allows the public to see what’s going first hand and to ask questions up front or have their concerns addressed in a more personal way than in an email or post on social media. In this episode, we go back in time to some public meetings about the Mayo Bridge -- one happened back in May at a time when the latest bridge design wasn’t yet released. The other came last September just after a first round of designs were released.People were concerned about the designs that VDOT had proposed because there was no room for bikes or pedestrians --- something many had asked for in a survey put out by VDOT.New episodes of History Reinvented will try to drop every few weeks but, as a freelance reporter, I could surely use some help with you subscribing and supporting this podcast. Hidden History
Send us Fan MailRichmond’s history was built on the backs of the enslaved population. Special Update on History Reinvented
Send us Fan MailI wanted to take a quick moment, while I’m working on the next episode of History Reinvented, to apologize for not having weekly episodes drop as I originally promised. As a freelance reporter, where paychecks are sporadic, I’ve got to prioritize my time as to when I can work on these episodes. History Reinvented is a sort of passion project for me–I’m fascinated by the history and the future of what’s going on in this part of Richmond, so I want to make sure I produce good episodes. So that means I have to wedge in working on this inbetween working on other paid for stories. Besides doing this podcast because I’m fascinated by the stories, I’m also doing this to hopefully land a permanent job and to maybe get some underwriting to hopefully dive into other fascinating parts of Richmond’s history. This is why within each episode I ask you to share it with others, to rate it and to if possible to subscribe and/or send me tips via Venmo (Ian-Stewart-82). This helps me get more ears to the show and hopefully get some funding. I totally understand that there are a zillion other podcasts, substacks, etc out there in the ether. But as a freelancer, anything helps. So, the next episode is still in the works–which hopefully will happen after I finish a paid story for a publication. I appreciate your patience. Be sure to check out my other podcast, called The Mechanics of Transportation in which I talk to local Richmond and national experts about all things transportation—including topics on cargo bikes, multi-use trails and more. ABOUT THIS SHOW
In this new season of History Reinvented we’ll uncover stories of Pine Camp. You
