Follow along Stephanie's journey @cinemanomadtv

    Empire Records

"We mustn't dwell, no...not today...not on Rex Manning Day." It's April 8 and 30 years after its original release we are still celebrating Rex Manning and Empire Records - a cornerstone film of 90s culture that feels as fresh, vibrant, and as entertaining as ever.

  19. 98

    Stand By Me

"A long time ago, if you only measure time in years..." a film came out about 4 boys in Oregon on a quest for personal glory. That film is Stand By Me released in 1986 and directed by Rob Reiner in what would be a 10 year span of all time classic films. Centering around a group of best friends Stand By Me is as timeless and poignant as ever with sharp writing, incredible performances, and a song that instantly makes you nostalgic.

So Anora is Best Picture. Demi Moore lost. And we are holding space for everything, ups and downs, from the 97th Academy Awards. Joined by Jess and Jesse Kalavoda we are recapping fashion, awards, host, and bits that we loved and the moments we wished didn't happen.

  21. 96

    Oscars Prediction Show 2025

It's the most wonderful and cinematic time of the year and we are documenting our predictions for what promises to be a surprising and plot twisting Oscars night in a tumultuous Oscars season. We can't do this without cinephile extraordinaire Anthony Desanctis from Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas.

  22. 95

    Moulin Rouge!

This is a story about love. Evenmoreso, this is a story about 4 people who met at a movie theater, and haven't stopped talking movies ever since. You know them from our Oscars post show every year, and we are excited to have them on the show to talk about one of their favorite films of all time - Moulin Rouge! The landscape of the Hollywood musical has gone through its seasons, from being able to print money, to now feeling like a massive swing. No one took a bigger swing than Baz Luhrmann in 2001 when he envisioned a juke box musical set in 1899 blending bohemian values with can-can dancers, Aussies a plenty, and pop music. Tune in as we discuss what made this such a smash hit, such a visionary pursuit, and perhaps what didn't make this a Best Picture winner (you know we had to sneak in a little Oscars talk).

  23. 94

Films of 1999: Eyes Wide Shut

"Fidelio" is the password, or you can just press play for our final in a long series of episodes celebrating the 25th anniversary of the films of 1999. If you've been listening all year you knew we would cover Kubrick's final psychosexual thriller masterpiece in all of its Christmas lights glory. And we did! Just under the wire to before the ball drops and we start 2025. It's Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise at their finest, in all sense of the word. It's more than just that one scene you've heard about. It's a film desperately searching to critique desire, wealth, power, and what happens when you go searching for something you don't intend to find.

  24. 93

    The Santa Clause (1994)

Ho-ho-ho it's the jolliest time of the year and we are revisiting The Santa Clause celebrating a 30th anniversary. In 1994 Tim Allen was the pinnacle of multimedia celebrity with the number one film at the box office, a best seller, and the number one tv show. But how does he rate as a Santa? Tune in and find out our thoughts as we look back at this now holiday classic.

  25. 92

March of the Wooden Soldiers (1934)

Call it Babes in Toyland, or March of the Wooden Soldiers, but either way call it our oldest Thanksgiving tradition! Join us as we kick off the festive week recapping the classic Laurel and Hardy musical comedy, March of the Wooden Soldiers. It's a film that for many is a holiday tradition, thanks to a copyright issue and its repeated plays on television from the 1960s on. For us it's firmly to be shown on one day in particular, leading us to ask How Could You Not watch March of the Wooden Soldiers on Thanksgiving?!

  26. 91

OSCARES - A Celebration of Horror Films

It is no secret that the Academy Awards criminally ignores horror genre films when dolling out Oscars. Thanks to a suggestion by a dear friend and longtime listener, we are handing out our first ever Oscares awards, honoring the horror films that missed out on gold.

  27. 90

Films of 99: The Sixth Sense

"I see dead people" and the latest entry in our year long exploration of the films of 1999 with The Sixth Sense. M. Night Shyamalan's third film is probably the most discussed of the year, making water cooler fodder around a twist so surprising, it begs us to ask How could you think a twist is better than this one?

  28. 89

Films of 99: The Blair Witch Project

In a year of remarkable films, and highly talked about films, the buzz around The Blair Witch Project was the buzziest of all. In a lightning in a bottle moment, viral marketing, lack of mainstream understanding of the genre, and a group of unknowns combined to scare the daylights out of audiences. But perhaps more intriguing is the life this film continues to have as one of the most successful independent films of all time, the gold standard in found footage, and a film that continues to surprise and terrify generations removed from its release. Compelling us to ask: how could you not still be obsessed with The Blair Witch Project?

  29. 88

    Films of 99: American Pie

It would be impossible to cover this year in film and not discuss the boundary pushing (and perhaps setting) teen comedy of 1999: American Pie. With a cast of characters that were the who's who of the late 90s-early 2000s moment, and with some actors who are still some of the most bankable in Hollywood, this movie is a cultural touchstone of late 90s teen culture. Join us as we talk about the memorable, the deplorable, and the absolute cringe inducing moments of comedy and finding yourself in high school. With so many talked about moments, and given that comedy ages like bread not wine, we have to ask: How could you defend American Pie?!

  30. 87

    Films of 99: Office Space

Does somebody have a case of the Mondays? Fear not, whether it's the start of or midweek blues, we've got the cure with our latest episode covering Mike Judge's Office Space. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this all to real satirical look at workplace culture and the man who tries to escape it remains both a snapshot of 1999 and relevant to the cubicle life. In many ways this is the definitive workplace movie, but we more specifically want to know HOW COULD YOU NOT THINK THIS IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WORKPLACE MOVIE OF THE 90S?!

  31. 86

Brian Raftery - The Ultimate Films of 99 Conversation

Brian Raftery is the author of Best. Movie. Year. Ever. How 1999 Blew Up the Big Screen, and in a year where this podcast is celebrating the 25th anniversary of those films, this was the episode we hoped most would happen. Interviewing Brian Raftery is a joy, he's funny, insightful, and an ardent movie fan. His passion for his subject matter and his ability to contextualize how these films still ripple to this day is nothing short of remarkable. Enjoy this week our conversation with Brian in this pinnacle episode for our podcast. 32. 85

    The Karate Kid (1984)

You're the best around, nothing in the world is going to keep you from listening to our latest episode celebrating the 40th anniversary of THE KARATE KID. A coming of age sports film that has stood the test of time in the crane position.

  33. 84

    Films of 99: DOGMA

What happens when Ben Affleck and Matt Damon play two fallen angels hellbent on getting back to heaven? Protests apparently. Join us as we look at Kevin Smith's fourth film Dogma as part of our ongoing celebration of the films of 1999. On this film's 25th anniversary we take a look in the rearview of the View Askew universe to evaluate the casting, controversies, and acclaim of a film much maligned on its release, and now desperately hard to find. With a cast including Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, and a special appearance by Alanis Morissette it seems like Kevin Smith rallied some of the heavenliest creatures for this exploration of faith, dogmatic law, and fast food franchises.

  34. 83

    The Crow (1994)

We are returning after a few weeks off to bring you a massive how could you. Returning to our original format that started this podcast we are taking care of a film that Lauren has never seen - The Crow - a genre and decade defining, atmospheric and soundtrack bar setting film. Join us as we deep dive into the gritty noir tale of revenge and love that comes with it a tragic production history and legacy burned into the minds of 90s cinephiles. And remember, "It can't rain all the time..."

  35. 82

Films of 99: Star Wars The Phantom Menace

It’s the 25th anniversary of the Star Wars movie that brought Lucas’s vision back to the big screen and a new trilogy to the Star Wars universe. Join us, and favorite third mic Anthony Desanctis, as we hit the hyper drive back to 1999 and remember the anticipation, and reviews of Episode One: The Phantom Menace.

  36. 81

    Road House VS. Road House

It's an all out Daulton fight ya'll!! Daulton v. Daulton. Kicks v. Kicks. Double Deuce versus Road House? In a first for our podcast we are filling a How Could You? and covering its remake on the same episode. Born out of curiosity and a weekend away at the beach, we finall sat down to watch the crazy for Swayze classic and decided to follow it up and see how Gyllenhal fills the Tai-Chi shoes of the OG. Did we love the original? Did we loathe the remake? You'll have to tune into find out in our first ever original and remake Double Deuce episode.

  37. 80

Films of 99: Beyond the Mat

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! Or whatever day you are listening to this episode we are taking it back to the late 90s and the WWE nee WWF. In a candid, raw, and unflattering documentary we witness the circus of pro-wrestling from the corporate to indie realm. Bodies are bloodied, and dreams are shattered, so it got us wondering: How could you like pro-wrestling?! Join us as we turn back the clock, fire up the VHS player, and hear from Mick Foley, Mankind, and many more in BEYOND THE MAT.

  38. 79

Films of 99: 10 Things I Hate About You

We are continuing our celebration of what can be argued as the greatest year of cinema ever with dreamy and teeny comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. We recite poems, have a Heath Ledger lovefest, and praise the feminist icon Kat Straford. And we had to have on our third mic Anthony Desanctis, programming manager for Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas and devoted fan of this film from the age of 9. There's something special about 99 and something tough about our how could you this week where we ask: HOW COULD YOU NOT THINK THIS IS THE BEST TEEN MOVIE OF the 90s?!

  39. 78

    Oscars 2024 Post Show

Who won? Who lost? And what happened with that Best Picture announcement? It seems like a night ruled by Bella Baxter and J. Robert Oppenheimer, strange golden bedfellows. Ken rocked it. Da'Vine made us all cry. And the Oppenhomies ruled supreme. Join us with our favorite Oscar companions Director, Writer Jesse Kalavoda and Producer Jessice Kalavoda as we break down the event that was the 96th Academy Awards.

  40. 77

    Oscars 2024

It's the most golden time of the year and we cannot do it without our third mic Anthony Desanctis! That's right, it's Oscars 2024! Will the Oppenhomies see Oscar glory for Nolan? Will Barbie be Kenough to the Academy? Is this the strongest Best Picture race in recent years? Who is to say? Us, of course! Join us as we lay out our predictions in all of the major categories in an energetic, at times contentious, film filled conversation about the 96th Academy Awards!

  41. 76

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

Come with me, and you'll be, in a world of pure admiration...for the beloved classic film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Dreamy production design, catchy tunes and the indomitable Gene Wilder combine to make this a much loved and often shown film. The story of its production is as rich as a Wonka bar and what it means to so many people is as glittering as a golden ticket. But why is this deeply adored film often neglected from being named as one of the best films of the 1970s. Hop on the boat and head into the tunnel with us as we celebrate and dissect: how could Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory not be one of the best films of the 1970s?

  42. 75

    Films of 99: Fight Club

The first rule of podcast is...you talk about movies made in 1999. Okay, maybe it isn't the first rule, but all throughout this year we are looking back at the movies that made 1999 one of the best films ever. For our first entry, we are covering David Fincher's chaotic Fight Club. A film that is quotable, iconic, and without a doubt influential. Join us as we break down the core scenes, the charismatic cast, and the pure unadulterated cult like devotion for this film.

  43. 74

    Garden State (2004)

It's Ryan's birthday and it means a no veto episode is in the works. For this year Ryan is celebrating Zach Braff's Garden State in its 20th anniversary. It's a movie that was a Sundance darling, critically acclaimed and a boost for sales of The Shins albums. It's beloved by the How Could You?! Podcast, but this film went from much marveled to much maligned. In an emotionally honest episode we seek to answer the question How Could You not love Garden State?

Join us we close out the year with Will Ferrell's joy, James Caan playing this as serious as a meeting of the families, and direction by Jon Favreau that captures the essence of the Christmas season.
