Can Religion create Civilization?
The discussion started with a general agreement on the fact that humans as individuals are capable of building a civilization, no matter where they come from. "There are approximately 1.6 billion Muslims in the world and within them are potential Einsteins, Wittigensteins, Ghazalis, Ibn Taymiyyah, architects, policymakers and leaders. All that is missing is stable institutions and some unity." We then discussed the various schools of thought that were in charge of igniting Muslim minds during the golden age, namely: Mu'tazili , Ash'ari, and Athari. The discussion then moved to the attitude of the modern Muslim world towards the idea of carrying religion and education together. The current conditions of Muslims in India were particularly highlighted during the discussion. The political and social reasons that have led to this decline were also discussed. By the end of the session, we had a word on the ongoing controversy of the reconversion of Aya Sofya Masjid of Istanbul. This discussion was part of the Ibn Sina Reading Club.
