Episode 6 | Dr Liz O'Riordan | Breast Cancer misinformation and the power of speaking up

In this episode, I’ll be talking to former breast cancer surgeon turned author, speaker and storyteller Dr Liz O’Riordan. After several encounters with breast cancer herself, Dr Liz was forced to retire early from her career as a surgeon and find a new purpose; empowering those going through breast cancer and making accurate, straight-talking information more accessible. Today, she has authored two books; The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer and Under The Knife: Life Lessons From The Operating Theatre, and has been featured on the likes of BBC Radio four’s Women’s Hour, TEDX and The Financial Times (to name a few).  Through this short-form conversation, Dr Liz talked to me about the growing issue of misinformation around breast cancer and provided some simple tips on how to discern clever marketing campaigns from quality information backed by evidence and assured by highly trained health professionals.  We also talked about the importance of being an advocate for your and other women’s mental health and well-being, especially in male-dominated industries, such as surgery.  You can follow Dr Liz on Instagram here, and find her website here. I'd like to dedicate this episode to UK-based Future Dreams Charity, who provide in-person and virtual support and guidance to those living with breast cancer. Our sponsor, Y.O.U Underwear, the UK's no.1 ethical clothing brand, supports Future Dreams with every purchase. Don’t forget to like, share and subscribe to the Informed Her podcast. Episode 5 | Sarah Jordan | Why your pants should NEVER cost less than your coffee

In this weeks episode i'm chatting all things pants with co-founder of the worlds highest scoring B-Corp clothing brand, Y.O.U Underwear. Y.O.U (Your Own Underwear) is an ethical business producing 100% organic cotton underwear for men and women where every purchase provides underwear to people in need (every purchase supports charities like Smalls for all and Future Dreams charity (who provide support to those experiencing poverty and people affected by breast cancer) During our conversation Sarah explains what it actually means when you see that “B-Corp” sign on a company's product as well as why being informed about where your clothes come from, can help you make better buying choices that align with your ethical values. We also explored the link between the cost of living crisis and period poverty- a poll done by Action Aid UK in May 2023 on over 1000 women reported the amount of women and girls (and anyone who menstruates) struggling to afford period products in the UK has risen from 12% in 2022 to 21% in just one year 🤯 Action Aid revealed that, of those affected, 41% kept sanitary pads or tampons in for longer, and 8% re-used disposable pads, which can be a dangerous method of period management 🩸🩸🩸🩸 As a country with the sixth largest economy in the world, we can really do better. Information (accurate information) empowers us to make more informed decisions that align with our values. I have a newsletter coming very soon, where i'd love to get you involved in what questions we look to answer through the podcast. If you want to get in contact, please do so via my Instagram. G x

In this long-form conversation, Dr Louise talks us through the (2015) NICE guidelines for menopause, explaining how an awareness of the guidelines can be a tool to inform patients and make for a more collaborative patient, doctor relationship, whilst also delving into a prevalent problem that the NICE guidelines left out - the astoundingly common occurrence of sleep disordered breathing among peri-post menopausal women.
