Episode 26: Agency Owner to CEO Challenge - Day 3

To finish out Season 1, we decided to do a 3-day Agency Owner to CEO Challenge to help set you up for 2024. On day 3 of the Challenge, we talk about how becoming aware of your ethos (mindset and limiting beliefs) will help you move from working in the business, to working on the business. The reason owners are stuck in their Zone of Excellence and unable to pivot to their Zone of Genius is because of mindset and limiting beliefs. We can tell you all day long how to increase efficiency and energy but if you don’t have the mindset and belief system to go along with it, you will fall back into old, reactive patterns. Stepping into the role of CEO requires you to step out of your comfort zone and change the way you think about things. → If you found this Challenge helpful, we invite you to check out our Agency Owner to CEO program. Episode 25: Agency Owner to CEO Challenge - Day 2

To finish out Season 1, we decided to do a 3-day Agency Owner to CEO Challenge to help set you up for 2024. On day 2 of the Challenge, we talk about how to increase efficiency. All of the clients that start with us are stuck in “putting out fires” mode. The first few years of building an agency require owners to do everything and be everyone. Once your business is financially stable and you start adding team members, being reactive becomes less sustainable. It can start to create stress and resentment toward the business. After the first two coaching sessions, we help you go from being reactive to being proactive. You will have a clear roadmap of how to increase efficiency, so you can get back to what only you can do and what you love to do. → Interested in learning more about the Agency Owner to CEO program? Episode 24: Agency Owner to CEO Challenge - Day 1

To finish out Season 1, we decided to do a 3-day Agency Owner to CEO Challenge to help set you up for 2024. On day 1 of the Challenge, we talk about managing your energy. Your energy is your greatest asset. We find most agency owners spend 80% of their time in their zone of excellence (things they are good at but could be outsourced, delegated, or automated). These “little” tasks add up and steal your energy from your zone of genius (the intersection of your strengths, talents, and passions). To help you grow and scale your agency without resenting it, we help you set up your business so you can be in your zone of genius 80% of the time. → Interested in learning more about the Agency Owner to CEO program? Episode 23: Beth DeLaForest on Unleashing Your Strength: How to Succeed and Thrive as a Woman in Insurance

Beth DeLaForest is President and Founder of Aspire Insurance Group Inc., a multi-location, full-service, boutique-style Independent Insurance Agency serving MN, WI, and IL. Beth started in the insurance industry in 2001 as a receptionist. In 2010 Beth made a bold move and left the agency she started with to start her own book of business from scratch ($0). In 2014, Beth took another leap of faith when she bought the book she had built and started Aspire Insurance Group, Inc., Aspire grew organically via word-of-mouth marketing until 2020 when Beth navigated her first acquisition. Currently, Aspire Insurance Group, Inc is a team of 9 and has a seven-figure valuation. Beth has a passion for company culture, modern-day leadership, innovation in the workplace, and growth and development. Throughout this journey, Beth has learned that our businesses, lives, and incomes will only grow to the edge in which we grow ourselves, and she looks forward to coming alongside others on this same growth path. → Key Takeaways: I always wanted to be in the helping profession. Being an independent brokerage allows me to be in an advisor role rather than a sales role. Purchasing leads is a hampster wheel, most people buy online for the lowest rates and aren't interested in forming a relationship. They'll continue to shop around. When networking, I've always had the mindset of what am I going to give and what will I learn, never what will i get out of this. Insurance is sales AND service. You cannot have one without the other. Our ideal client is someone who values our opinion and expertise. Someone who says, "What would you suggest?" We have a holistic approach, it's not about agency growth, but personal growth first and foremost. If I take really great care of my team, they'll take really great care of our clients. → Key Moments: [0:01] Introduction to Beth [3:42} The decision to leave State Farm and start her own company [8:53] The process of starting from scratch [14:04] How do you get leads? By establishing boundaries and building a successful business, they have each found their place in the industry, within their home, and what truly motivates them. → Key Takeaways: Know your boundaries and have the (uncomfortable) conversations. Ask for what you need, whatever that might be. When you're confident in one area of your life, it shines through in other areas. If you're facing burnout, address it before you hit rock bottom and irreversible damage is done. Self-care has a very high return on investment. Be okay with giving to yourself. It's okay to strive for something. It's ok to be ambitious. It's okay to go after the things you want in life. Episode 19: Kathryn Arnold on Heartfelt Niches: Finding Your Passion and Serving Others

Kathryn, also known as Kat, is a dedicated mother of four, including one child with special needs. Her passion lies in helping others, which she has pursued through a career in healthcare since 2007. Kathryn finds fulfillment in developing and motivating individuals by empowering, educating, and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed. With over 15 years of experience in medical and insurance fields, alongside a team of agents with 20+ years of experience, Kathryn aims to help others achieve the same success she has worked hard for. She is a part of Women of Insurance, an organization that supports women with an ambitious, driven community of like-minded professionals striving to help each other achieve success. Kathryn is committed to her clients and to helping others succeed and grow. → Key Takeaways: Take care of your clients like they're your family. Lazy Prospecting - If you're in Medicare, schedule, a "How to Effectively Bill Medicare" lunch and learn with Dr.'s offices. Establish a mutual relationship, doctors will send clients who need insurance assistance. Retirement is where I find the most fulfillment because I'm helping client's income plan so that they don't outlive their money. Always do the right thing, because it will always come back to you. Advocate for your community. Senior citizens were being kicked out of their community center and it upset me because a lot of my medicare clients are widowed or their children have moved out of the area and don't come around much anymore. These centers are their only lifeline. I spoke at a City Council meeting on behalf of the Senior Citizen Center, its patrons, and the community at large, and was successful in keeping it open. A master of all is a master of none. I joined Women Of Insurance and it's been the best thing to happen for me. WOI is the only female-owned and operated national organization focused exclusively on providing training and support to women who work within the insurance industry. Advice: Seek mentorship or a community that will support you and is there for you no matter what. More advice: Look for a "home" whether it's an upline or a person who will mentor you and help you grow regardless of what that is. Growth is how you'll get there and succeed. → Key Moments: [0:00] How Katherine got into the Insurance Industry [3:03] Background in healthcare [12:47] The importance of writing down your final expenses [18:09] The importance of giving back to the community [23:45] How the group Women Of Insurance helped [29:36] How to build a team [35:09] Heart to serve others [39:53] Where to find a mentor → Follow Kathryn "Kat" Arnold: Email: [email protected] Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SLALegacy → Thank you for listening to this episode! Episode 18: Teresa Kitchens on Process to Progress: Navigating Growth Through the Journey

Teresa comes from an "insurance family” with her Dad (Frank Bilder) and mother working in the insurance industry as she was growing up. She initially decided to pursue something outside of insurance and after earning a degree in Elementary Education, she taught 5th grade English in the DeSoto ISD until staying home to raise her children for nine years. In 2003, Frank wanted to pursue opening an independent agency and Teresa agreed to be the agency principal/agency owner. She actively participated in the agency while raising her two children. Now, she has the privilege of coordinating the Sterling Insurance Team, developing agency technology and implementing the vision for the agency. She has a passion for mentoring and speaking which is apparent in her YouTube videos, social media posts, podcast, and her speaking opportunities around the country. She also coordinates a “mastermind,” where she shares her time and talents with other insurance agency owners to help them achieve success in the industry and in general. → Key Takeaways: The pivot (whether in life or business) is often the hardest. What happens in life affects business. What happens in business affects life. From the start, Teresa wanted to orchestrate her agency differently. She had VAs and VOIP well before most and continued to make changes and adjustments along the way. Goal: Team of people who love their job and love what they do but also have the personal freedom to be the people they want to be. As you reach certain milestones in your career and agency, your vision is going to completely change. You always think, “Oh, (fill in the blank) is when I’ll be happy.” Let go. We are not the Queen of everything. Expectation for Team Members: How did you already try to solve this (before coming to me)? She expects that they'll go back and fix it (and learn from it). Began asking her team and children, “Do you want advice, do you want me to listen, or do you want me to be your champion?” You do you, Boo. Release responsibility of others and just be there when and how you’re needed. → Key Moments: [0:01] Who is Teresa Kitchens [2:17] Jumping into the Insurance Industry [4:35] Selling the CRM System [8:42] Apologize for mistakes [10:28] What's Teresa's vision? [16:06] Creating a different vision for yourself [24:25] Life is a series of seasons [28:25] How to avoid burnout [32:41] The importance of prioritizing self-care [38:36] Helping people find their own way [42:09] Redemption in all areas of life [44:45] The importance of letting go of control [48:23] Finding what is significant to you [52:18] Advice for people who are just starting an agency [1:01:56] Grief is not just about death of a Mother [1:05:22] Taking time to process and heal [1:08:25] Advice on how to deal with grief → Follow NAME: Email: [email protected] Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sterlinginsurancegrouptx Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sterlinginsurancetx Website: https://www.sterlinginsnow.com → Thank you for listening to this episode! Episode 17: The Leader Within: Dawnyel Smink on Discovering and Strengthening your Leadership Skills

Dawnyel is known industry-wide for her leadership and steadfast resolve in understanding and empowering women. Throughout her work in the insurance industry and in her busy life, she has become a strong female contributor in a male-dominated industry. In the last two decades, Dawnyel has grown as a person and as a business owner. Dawnyel is the first to tell you that working on one’s self is never over. It is a lifelong journey of continuing to learn and remaining aware. Today, she is sharing these lessons with her Mom. When asked, “What still scares you,” she will tell you she still battles the fear of failure. Yet, through her conscious work on herself, she has learned that no one is perfect and neither is she. With this realization, she continues to strive to maintain a shit-free existence.  Dawnyel is married to her husband, Jason, and the two live in Northeast Mesa with their children, James Michael, Carter, and Savana, and dogs, Rea and Kronos. When not working or spending time with her Benefactors, she describes herself as a “crazy reader” with an eclectic mix of books on her Kindle. At any given time, she has a bedside stack of books, consisting of cookbooks (for her love of cooking), self-improvement books, fiction (for her book club membership), weird history books, and books on travel. She is also an avid golfer, often blending business with leisure by hitting the links. → Key Takeaways: You have every opportunity to redesign yourself and your wants and needs personally and professionally. Men and women not only communicate differently, but they perceive things differently. If someone is having a 'not so great' moment, we all need to give each other a little grace and give them the benefit of the doubt that it's just a bad day or moment in time. That's not who they are or always will be. Being underestimated isn't a disadvantage. Use it as your super power. Say, "They just don't know me yet" and live up to what you're capable of. Visualization is key. Ask yourself, "What would it look like if I completed what they thought I couldn't?" "How would that make me feel (if I completed it)?" "How can I make them feel awesome about it, too?" Always be thinking what the end result looks like. Check out Dawnyel's book, "Don't Project Your Shit On Me." Take on what's yours, but don't project it on to other people. → Key Moments: [0:00] How did you get into the Insurance Industry? [4:46] How do you stimulate conversations between men and women? [10:28] Learning how to communicate differently [14:17] Conflict between men and women in sports [20:18] Why being underestimated is not a disadvantage [25:16] Tips for being a female leader [28:56] The declaration of independence and mission behind it → Follow Dawnyel: Email: [email protected] Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CLISelectAgencies Website: https://www.canyonlandsinsurance.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/canyon-lands-insurance/ → Thank you for listening to this episode. Episode 14: Melissa Dillon AKA "The Insurance Exam Queen" talks Exam Prep and Mindset

Melissa Dillon, AKA “The Insurance Exam Queen," has helped thousands of people pass their insurance exam with her simple and easy explanations, memory tricks, and quips that you can't help but remember. She doesn't just explain the topic, she implants it in your mind so you recall it at your command when taking the exam. "The Insurance Exam Queen" is 5-star rated and helps create a sense of ease and confidence so you can hit the ground running when you begin your insurance career.  → Key Takeaways: Melissa found success working for corporations in the pre-licensing education field and quickly became the most requested instructor. In 2022, with her background as a middle school teacher and her love for the insurance industry, she started her own business and was able to teach in a more meaningful way that was in alignment with her values.  Myth: If you study the material over and over again and take the practice test and pass, you will easily pass the State exam. Melissa says this isn't the best advice or strategy because people don't learn by reading, we only retain about 10% that way. People struggle with those courses because they're just memorizing the material and not fully understanding the concepts behind it. Melissa started a YouTube channel and supportive Facebook Group and teaches material audio and visual. It's engaging well beyond reading.  There are so many well-qualified, educated, and incredible salespeople who could be working in insurance but because they can't pass the exam we lose them. Melissa's goal is not to lose them. She wants to keep them! (Too many people leave the exam demoralized after receiving a failing grade and think maybe insurance isn't for them.)  TIP: Mindset always. Whatever your mindset is about studying or taking the exam is crucial because if you are afraid or overwhelmed and think it's too much, what you believe to be true is what you will end up experiencing in your life. → Key Moments: [0:03] Meet the "Insurance Exam Queen" [1:49] How Melissa got into Insurance and teaching [7:46] Who needs the courses vs. who can do well on their own [14:03] Tips for preparing for the exam [18:53] How does the information work in Colorado? In today’s second part episode, Lisa does a deep dive into creating a team dynamic that brings balance to her life and business using The RAMP Method. → Key Takeaways: After the first coaching session with Cheree, I felt exhilarated. I felt like there was hope again. The blinders came off. The cloud of confusion went away and there was some clarity. I could see the other side. I could see the beautiful view. I didn’t have to live under this almost oppression. The heavy dark cloud was gone.  Show up for yourself. Advocate for yourself. Listen to your body and spirit.  I had a business coach. I had a therapist. I needed someone to help me merge the two together. We often try to keep business and life separate and they are not separate. Episode 12: Part 1 - Lisa LeBlanc on The Courage to Lead: How to Step into Your Power and Make a Difference

Lisa is a previous client of Cheree’s. It was their work together that led Cheree and Tarah to niche down specifically to female Insurance Agency Owners. After you listen to this two-part special, you’ll know exactly why. Tune in over the next two weeks to hear about Lisa’s life and business transformation she experienced through coaching, and how The RAMP Method helped Lisa and her team. These 3 words are Lisa's compass: Jesus, connections, and learning. Learning from all of life's lessons, building meaningful connections with her family and friends, and serving God with her gifts are how she hopes to show up each and every day. Owning North Town Insurance in Spokane, WA, and sharing that experience with 5 other team members, including her husband and sister, is the vessel she gets to use to learn, connect, and bring value to her community. → Key Takeaways: We lead with values. One of them is ‘Irrational Generosity’. We’re able to show up and give well for things that matter and are important to us because we have the ability to.  Another value is ‘Engaged Connections’. To me, engaged means meaningful, intentional, present, and like-hearted. Insurance can be transactional or commodity, but we want to make space for families who want an insurance advisor or advocate. Trust is important to us. We’ll spend the time needed for those willing to invest and reciprocate. Yet another value is ‘Purposeful Growth’. We are intentional about growing. As individuals and as a company, we set a goal or vision and we invest in movement toward that goal or vision. Everyone has an annual budget that they can use towards their own personal development whether their own coaching or improvement courses, industry related or not. → Key Moments: [0:00] Who is Lisa LeBlanc [2:51] How Lisa got into the Insurance Industry [9:31] Shifting into a different direction [12:54] The retreat that changed her life [18:43] Commitment to coaching and the catalyst [24:40] Work-life balance [27:48] Leading with your values and decision making [32:59] North Town Insurance on Instagram [39:57] The value of taking time off → Follow Lisa: Email: [email protected] Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NorthtownIns Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/northtowninsurance Website: https://www.northtowninsurance.com → Thank you for listening to this episode! Episode 8: Leslie Shields-Botvidson on Hiring Women and Tapping Into Hidden Employee Markets

Leslie Shields-Botvidson is the proud owner of The Shields Agency, a female-driven insurance agency specializing in Individual, Medicare, and Small Group Benefits. To better serve clients, The Shields Agency recently expanded into the property and casualty markets. The company thrives by providing clients with high-quality service and treating them with integrity and honesty. After working with several national health insurance companies for six years, Leslie started her own independent agency in November 2019, which has seen tremendous growth in the last three years. In addition to her work at The Shields Agency, Leslie is an active member of the EO, Entrepreneur's Organization, where she is the MyEO Women's National Delegate and incoming Social Chair on the local board. She is active in the Fort Worth community and is President of the West Meadowbrook Neighborhood Association. She enjoys spending time with her family. Her toddler, Harrison keeps her and her husband, Chris, very busy. They are lucky to have family in the area, both having grown up in North Texas. The Botvidsons enjoy camping, traveling, and spending time with family in Wisconsin. Leslie also has a passion for animal rescue, gardening, reading, and cooking. Leslie was recently featured in 2021 - Fort Worth 40 Under 40 Honoree 2022 - American Heart Association Fort Worth Woman of Impact Nominee, Benefits Pro Magazine, Canvas Rebel, and as a Podcast Guest on The Jeff Crilley Show.  → Key Takeaways: A lot of companies are very set on candidates having a degree/education, but it’s about learning to look at someone's resume and see that they’ve worked retail for 5 years or front of house in a restaurant and know how to sell or have great customer service skills. You need to be able to see what a woman can do without those letters behind her name and look beyond that.  Elevate your own networking and build contacts by putting yourself in places like the “non networking” networking approach. Maybe that’s a table at a nonprofit luncheon or happy hour at a high end restaurant downtown.  Once you land it, protect it. Let the owner/boss, whether male or female, know what you’re doing for them and their business regularly so that they see the value you're offering and it doesn’t get overlooked.  → Key Moments: [0:00] Who is Leslie Shields? Kelly opened her office in 2021 in the town she grew up in. Kelly enjoys her hometown roots and being a service to her community. Kelly currently lives just outside of Pittsburgh, PA with her husband, children, and 3 Great Danes. → Key Takeaways: Don't sacrifice more than you're willing. We don't set out ahead of time to sacrifice our health, family, or relationship, but it can so easily happen if you don't manage your time or set boundaries Define your version of success, whatever that is, and work towards it. Develop a plan that will get you there Burnout occurs when you're reactive to circumstances instead of being proactive and leading with intention Focus on the things that matter. Lawanda “Elle Michell” Hall’s professional career spans more than 20 years, serving in progressive Risk Management and Insurance roles. Elle’s rich life and career experiences coupled with her love for serving people and adroit problem-solving skills are the perfect ingredients for a thoughtful and impactful life coach. She blends innate creativity, natural inquisitiveness, and analytical acumen to guide her clients through various life and career transitions. She also received a Life Coaching Certificate from the National Coaching Society. Elle is a passionate advocate for foster children and a faithful supporter of the arts. → Key Takeaways: You do not need to operate as a bifurcate having to be one way at home and a separate way at work. It is okay to bring all of you into the workspace, and to the work product as well, and the industry will be better for it. Showing up authentically as yourself will revolutionize the industry because there is a lot of time and energy spent in Human Resources with people trying to manage their own expectations of people. If you are not creating intentionally, then you are either a component of someone else's creation, or you are the casualty of chaos. I think there needs to be more alignment, and intentionality, as it relates to how we manage our careers. It is important to make sure that you are doing what pays your bills AND your heart. Fulfillment is at the intersection of who you are and what you know. If you are only doing a job every day based on what you know, and are not congruent with who you are, then it is such an empty existence, it is such a heavy and exhausting thing to do. → Key Moments: [0:02] Who is "Elle Michell"? Episode 5: Breaking The Mold - How Becki Jennings is Leading in a Male-Dominated Industry

Becki Jennings is the Owner of Jennings Insurance Group in Osage Beach, MO. The agency opened in June 2011, after she returned to the lake area from Boise, ID, where she lived for 20 years, raised her two daughters, and started in the insurance industry in 2007. Her agency focuses on senior benefits, including Medicare Health Plans, Annuities, Life Insurance, and Employee benefits. Becki is passionate about her clients and works to introduce legislation to help Medicare beneficiaries and clients in the State of Missouri. She is a member of the National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals, where she serves as Legislative Chair for the Central Missouri Chapter. NABIP is the largest association for Health Insurance Brokers. Becki joins them while they remain on the front lines, lobbying in Washington, DC for brokers and their clients. Becki is proud to call Lake of the Ozarks home. She has been enjoying the Lake since she was a young girl and loves the sound of the boats on the water first thing in the morning and a leisurely sunset cruise at the end of a great day. Becki’s success is largely due to her community involvement. Most recently, she co-chaired LOTO Relief Fund, providing relief for residents of Ft. Myers Beach, FL after Hurricane Ian. → Key Takeaways: As women, we often feel like we are not as tough as we are. Like when we are going through something hard, or we respond out of emotion instead of taking a minute and gaining control of it. Best advice - dry your tears, get up, go to work, and do what you need to do. You attract people who are like you and if you are attracting the wrong people, you need to look in the mirror and make changes. That is hard to admit. Owning an agency is not a cakewalk. It is tough and you must have a lot of grit and a lot of tenacity in this industry to be successful. Have you ever felt a "stirring" in your life? A counselor once told me, it was because I was not living in my destiny. Until you get to the point where you are living your destiny, you are going to constantly feel like you need to make a change. → Key Moments: [0:03] Becky's Background [3:03] Banking on yourself [8:51] Push past the doubt [14:57] Hiring the right team [20:05] Branding and Lead Gen [25:36] The challenges of competing with Men [28:33] The challenges of being a female Agent [33:48] Taking ownership of your decisions [39:37] It's not an overnight success [44:13] Advice for women thinking about starting their own agency → Follow Becki Jennings: Email: [email protected] Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jenningsinsurancegroup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Jennings.Insurance.Group Website: https://jenningsinsurancegroup.com/ → Thank you for listening to this episode! Episode 4: Does Self-Care Pay Off Financially?

--> What if you knew with 100% certainty that prioritizing your self-care allowed you to do the following: - Make decisions from a place of peace instead of guilt, fear, or people pleasing - Gave you control over your calendar, time, and energy - Empowered you to say yes to only things that were in alignment with your values, intentions, and goals - Empowered you to say no without guilt or worry about what others might think - Helped you increase your productivity and overall happiness - Grow your business to new heights with less stress Would you then take self-care more seriously? Self-care and a lack of self-care really comes down to your beliefs. What are you believing about self-care or about your time? Insurance Revolutionized Trailer

Have you ever wondered how women in insurance thrive in this male-dominated industry? Welcome to the Insurance Revolutionized Podcast brought to you by Success Without Sacrifice. I am your host and coach Cheree Sauer.  I will be interviewing female innovators who are changing the face of insurance for women, as well as giving you tips and inspiration for reaching new heights in your business without sacrificing what is most important to you. Join us on this journey as we explore, encourage, inspire, and grow together. At Success Without Sacrifice, we talk a lot about athletes and use a ton of sports analogies. You may be wondering what it has to do with entrepreneurship?! In short, everything!  Host, Cheree Sauer has over 21 years of experience helping high performance athletes, teams, and business owners reach optimal levels of success. Using her knowledge of business, sports psychology, sports training, and team performance, she recognized a need to help women in insurance bridge the gap and align business, life, and leadership so they could continue their success without sacrificing themselves.  Your body, especially as a female, was not designed to be in peak performance 24/7, 365 days per year. Just like pro-sports teams have coaches and a training plan designed to avoid burnout, injury, and achieve peak performance, our Success Without Sacrifice proprietary system, The RAMP Method™, provides agencies a roadmap to fully optimize specific physiologies and business trends, so they can be in peak performance at the right time, instead of all the time.  Join us as we revolutionize the way women in insurance do business!
