    Ep. 24: GODLIS (Photographer)

David Godlis, who is best known by his last name GODLIS, has been photographing in New York City since 1976. A “street photographer” in the style of Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand, he wandered into the nightclub CBGB’s one night, and has become known for his photographs of the NYC Punk scene. GODLIS, who shot in the style of photographers Brassai and Robert Frank, used his handheld Leica camera and Tri-X film to capture his subjects by the natural light of the Bowery outside as well as inside the club CBGB’s. His book of those photographs, HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT, artistically documented that club between the years 1976 and1979, when Patti Smith, The Ramones, Blondie, Richard Hell, Talking Heads and Television ruled the Bowery. Since the late 1980’s, GODLIS has been shooting the New York Film Festival, where he has been the unofficial official photographer for the last 25 years. Now thoroughly enmeshed in the digital world with a FUJI X camera, he shoots assignments and exhibits his photographs internationally. His two books of “street photography” - GODLIS STREETS and GODLIS MIAMI are available from Reel Art Press.  https://www.godlis.com/ https://www.instagram.com/godlis Stephen Bluhm Sound Engineer/ Editor https://www.stephenbluhm.fun

Ep. 22: Michael Weinstein (Photographer) Rock and Roll Portraits

Michael Weinstein’s career began in 1978, after graduating from the University of Michigan with an English degree. During that time, Michael worked as a printer at the Ross-Ehlert Photo Lab (one of Chicago’s most well known) in the black and white film department. Simultaneously, the music scene in Chicago was bursting at the seams. New and exciting acts, including Rock and Roll, Blues and Punk as well as more established musicians were playing in a wider assortment of venues. It was an extremely exciting time, and a rare opportunity to be documenting all of the musical acts that were in Chicago.  Weinstein spent his days at Ross-Ehlert printing for work, and most nights he would photograph shows and venues all over the Chicago area. On weekends, Michael would develop his film at a place known as The Darkroom - a communal darkroom dedicated to working with both amateurs and professionals. It was an inspirational home base for Weinstein as a young photographer, and a primary influence on his whole career. In the basement of The Darkroom was the office of  Photo Reserve, an agency that specialized in Rock and Roll photography and covered most of the musical venues in and out of the city. Photo Reserve provided Weinstein with access to almost every musical event in the city. As a result, Michael’s Rock and Roll photos appeared in local Chicago publications, as well as most of the major national music magazines including Rolling Stone. Michael has had the good fortune to photograph full-time ever since. He has photographed portraits for practically every national magazine and has photographed fashion for numerous retailers. For the last 25 years, Weinstein grew his namesake MW Studio, into one of NYC’s top boutique Real Estate and architectural photography studios.  After spending the past few years archiving all of his music photography from the special period of the late 70s and early 80s, Weinstein premiers this treasure trove of photos featuring some of Rock and Roll’s biggest stars. This collection  - sitting in storage for over 40 years, represents an opening into the past,  and has the quality of a time capsule. Michael wants people to be able to look at a single photo and tap into the emotional and visceral experience of being there. Michael is thrilled to share these images- when Rock and Roll was Rock and Roll!  https://www.themfgallery.com/michaelweinsteinphotographer Music   Richie by B.J Snowden https://bjsnowdenmusic.com/  I Never Feel Alone Instrumental by Stephen Bluhm  https://www.stephenbluhm.fun/  Website https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/

Ep. 21: Andy Sweet Legacy (Photographer)

Andrew John Sweet was a young photographer living and working in Miami Beach in the late 1970s. His life and his art were cut tragically short when he was murdered on October 16, 1982. Andy left an extensive body of work that exhibits a level of creative maturity far beyond his years. His photographs are a testimony to a rich but often overlooked period of Miami Beach’s cultural heritage. Andy Sweet returned home to Miami Beach after receiving a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1977, to photograph the old world Jewish culture that then distinguished South Beach. While in graduate school, Andy was part of a small faction of young artist-photographers who were discovering the creative possibilities of color imagery. His beach-ball hues perfectly described the vivid light and lively culture he explored and portrayed, a culture that many others found bleak and pedestrian.   He photographed in this way until his death in 1982. He was only 29 years old. Citizens of the City of Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County were shocked and horrified by Andy’s senseless murder. This native son, affable and fun-loving, who, having entered his artistic prime and was becoming well known for establishing an important visual legacy, was abruptly gone. While mourners overflowed from the sanctuary of Temple Emanu-El, The Miami Herald was preparing a tribute about Andy Sweet; it was the cover story in Tropic magazine, its Sunday supplement. Family and friends sat shiva while the police searched for his killers. Time passed, but the Sweet family and their friends kept an emotional vigil. Andy’s photographs, in boxes containing hundreds of large colorful prints, became their focal point. His archive would represent his richly-lived short life. However, if there was any glory in their undertakings, there would be much more anguish. Andy’s aesthetic was as fresh as his colors. He rejected formalist theory and idea-driven imagery in favor of immediate and unmediated responses, of living it up and aligning himself with the people he knew he was privileged to photograph. Andy admired the work of Diane Arbus, and like her he rejected the notion of self-conscious art making. The pure and spirited photograph was what mattered. He knew he was an artist but his aesthetic, his intellect, and his ego required that he conceal this fact in service of achieving the caliber of photograph he desired. Intuitive, but certain, each click of his camera’s shutter release was an affirmation. https://www.andysweetphotolegacy.com

    Ep.20: Ruthann Friedman (Musician)

Ruthann Friedman is one of the most captivating singer-songwriters of the 60s California scene. Yet you’ve probably never heard of her. If you have, it’s most likely because you know she penned The Association’s irresistible pop smash, “Windy.” But Friedman created many more extraordinary songs, crossed genre lines, and ended up being ignored by the mainstream. In an era of hippie idealism and wonderment, Friedman hung out with Janis, The Dead, Donovan, Ken Kesey, Van Dyke Parks and Hoyt Axton. She crashed at David Crosby’s pad. And just prior to Grace Slick’s grand entrance, almost landed the lead vocalist role with Jefferson Airplane. In 1967, with “Windy,” Friedman became just the third female songwriter to reach the number one position on the charts. She wrote and sang songs in the cult flick “Peace Killers.” Her 1969 solo album, the impressive “Constant Companion” (on Warner Reprise) should have elevated her to Laura Nyro-like status. But it quickly disappeared. Friedman was soon focusing on raising a family. In 2006, the Water label reissued “Constant Companion,” spearheading a rediscovery of Friedman’s work. Water followed up with a collection of rare tracks, “A Hurried Life,” comprised of home and studio recordings, circa 1965-71. The U.K. label Now Sounds has since released an expanded version of “Constant Companion,” as well as another compilation, “Windy: A Ruthann Friedman Songbook.” Friedman has returned with her first new album in 40 years, the strikingly beautiful “Chinatown” (Wolfgang Records). Van Dyke Parks guests on piano and accordion. Friedman’s writing proves to be honest, insightful and consistently surprising. Her songs are melodically intriguing and entrancing; lyrically profound and thought-provoking. The material is deeply personal and often reflects the fact that Friedman has never abandoned her social/political conscience.  http://popcultureclassics.com/friedman.html

    Ep. 19: Gary Monroe (Photographer)

Gary Monroe, a native of Miami Beach, received a master's degree in fine arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1977. Upon returning home, he photographed the old world Jewish community that characterized South Beach for a decade, until it vanished. From 1984 through 2000 he photographed throughout Haiti, and later looked at tourism across Florida, especially the "rite of passage" of vacationers at Disney World. Gary Monroe has always photographed throughout Florida and also "wanders aimlessly" to photograph in other countries – Brazil, Israel, Cuba, India, Trinidad, Poland, England and Egypt to name a few. At the turn of the millennium he photographed the landscape, focusing on the transformation of place due to corporate-driven planning. In 2020 he began photographing digitally. Gary Monroe's life's work is housed at Emory University’s Stuart A. Rose Library.

Ep. 15: Dean Friedman (Musician, VR Creator, Author)

Ep. 15: Dean Friedman (Musician, VR Creator, Author)  Dean Friedman first marked his entry into pop consciousness with the Top 20 chart success of his infectious hit single, Ariel, a quirkily irresistible and uncategorizable pop song about a free spirited, pot-smoking, vegetarian Jewish girl in a peasant blouse who lived, as the lyric goes, "...way on the other side of the Hudson".  Friedman scored again with the release of his follow up album, “Well, Well,” Said the Rocking Chair’, and the now classic hit single, Lucky Stars. This magical duet, performed with singer, Denise Marsa, zoomed to the top of the UK singles charts, going instantly gold. Lucky Stars paved the way for a slew of Friedman hits, including familiar radio staples such as Lydia, Rocking Chair, McDonald’s Girl and Woman of Mine.  Friedman’s consummate songwriting and performing, have earned him a loyal international following, devoted to the sophisticated, funny and profound work of a master songsmith.  “Stunning Musicianship” - Hot Press, "Songsmith Extraordinaire!" - Music Week , "An Amazing Talent" - The Sun, "An American Classic" - Tribune, “The Soundtrack of Our Lives” – NY Times, are just of few of the superlatives used to describe Friedman's powerfully unique and original talent.  Friedman’s recent run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival garnered similar critical praise: “Every song in this Edinburgh show is a classic. You won't see a better show.” – London Theatre Guide.  "Sophisticated and humorous work from an old master!" Scotland on Sunday. “With his mix of jaunty ditties, sentimental ballads and bashful charm, Friedman is the pop troubadour of choice.”  The Scotsman. “Dean Friedman is entirely unique and utterly brilliant” – ThreeWeeks. Though Friedman’s next single, McDonald's Girl was officially banned by the BBC for mentioning the  tradename of the fast food restaurant, the irrepressible pop song has been successfully covered by a number of acclaimed contemporary bands including the Blenders (Universal) and top canadian band, Barenaked Ladies [WEA]. (BNL member, Steve Page, sings background vocals on Dean’s recent double album.) The song has become a viral YouTube video hit, and a staple of high-school and college a capella groups, around the world – including Harvard’s Din & Tonics and Yale’s Mixed Company - spawning more than 40 different video versions on YouTube; and now, three decades after being banned, the song has just been licensed by the McDonald’s corporation to be featured in a national TV/Radio campaign:"McDonald's Girl". Friedman composes and produces music soundtracks for TV and film, including five seasons of Central TV's hit series BOON and the soundtrack to the underground cult horror film classic I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle [Hobo Films/U.K.]. Other credits include Nickelodeon, NBC, BBC and FUJI TV. Ep 12: Heads Together. Weed and the Underground Press Syndicate 1965–1973 (A conversation with David Jacob Kramer and Box Brown)

The youth uprising, now simply called “The Sixties,” was fed by one of the greatest booms in publishing history. The Underground Press Syndicate (UPS) began as a loose confederation of five papers in 1966, and within a few years swelled to over 500 across the world, reaching millions of readers. They “spread like weed,” said the UPS director, weed-dealer, and eventual founder of High Times, Tom Forcade. The metaphor was apt: the UPS spurred the legalization movement, and weed became its totem.  Book by David Jacob Kramer Weed was so pervasive it became a helpful means for government agencies to crack down on the UPS. Weed came to emblematize activist groups, and added a touch of flair to the mastheads of UPS titles. Weed permeated UPS pages, with gaps in text crammed with weed-inspired “spot illustrations”. Heads Together collects these drawings, shining a light on lesser-known names in the stoner-art canon, and many who weren’t names at all, as no signature was attached. It also compiles guides for growing weed from the period that were treated like contraband by the CIA. Activist-oriented, psychedelic rolling papers are showcased too. As pot now fast-tracks toward legalization in the U.S. and beyond, its once incendiary status is brought into odd relief. Pot’s profiteers of the corporate market today do not reflect those who fought for legalization, or the Black and Latino populations strategically criminalized for pot well before hippies were targeted, and long after. The art in this book speaks to a time when pot was smoked with optimism, as something potentially good for society and people, capable of activating profound transformation in the face of corrupt and powerful forces. With Oral Histories by: Ishmael Reed, John Sinclair, Marjorie Heins, Mariann Wizard-Vasquez, Abe Peck Box Brown  Cannabis: The Illegalization of Weed in America  Legalization Nation is a comic strip aiming to educate the population about what exactly is happening right under their noses. It covers legalization from a ground level perspective, not shying away from black market discussion, patients' rights, corporate advantage and more.  People want to legalize weed very much, but don't quite understand what this looks like in practice because it's happening so lightning fast. Brian "Box" Brown, is a cartoonist, New York Times Best Seller, Eisner Winner and Pennsylvania Medical Cannabis Patient. My non-fiction graphic novel Cannabis: The Illegalization of Weed in America, studies why cannabis became illegal. I stopped short of covering the legalization process because it's too fast moving and complex. By the time a book about legalization was released it would be horribly outdated https://www.patreon.com/LegalizationNation Cannabis: The Illegalization of Weed in America  https://www.amazon.com/Cannabis-Illegalization-America-Box-Brown/dp/1250154081 Research by Otter Castro  https://www.instagram.com/ottercastro/   Songs used  Richie by BJ Snowden  https://bjsnowdenmusic.com/ I Never Feel Alone (Instrumental) There Was a Light (Instrumental)  https://www.stephenbluhm.fun/ More info on Jewish Vintage Annals Archive https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/the-jewish-vintage-annals-archive---digital-online-archive-and-podcast.html Please Support If you'd like to support this project please join our Patreon. Ep 11: Rabbi Gershom Sizomu and Jay Sand (Jewish Stories/Jewish Music)

I don’t want to give too much away about this episode except to say Rabbi Gershom shares an amazing story that truly involves a miracle happening, and he and Jay have a truly remarkable friendship that they speak about. This episode is very special.  Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, who was ordained at the Zeigler School of Rabbinic Studies in 2007, is the spiritual leader of the 100-year-old Abayudaya ("People of Judah") community of almost 3,000 Jews living in rural villages in Eastern Uganda. He is the grandson of community elder Rabbi Samson Mugombe and lives near the Moses Synagogue in the village of Nabugoya, which he and others from the community’s early 1980s “Kibbutz movement” built with their own hands. His goal has been to gather back together what was left of the Abayudaya community after the devastating reign of Idi Amin Dada ended in 1979. It is readily apparent to those who visit that the Abayudaya endure extremely harsh conditions of African life; yet despite these challenges, they express such joy and gratitude for God, being Jewish, and being part of the collective Jewish people. Your donation will go directly to support the Abayudaya Community in Uganda. Scan the QR code with your cell phone, which will take you to the donation page, and then choose Abayudaya Fund in the "Type" drop-down box. Or type stsgive.org in your web browser. The fund is administered by Shomrei Torah Synagogue in West Hills, CA. Please be assured that 100% of your donation will go to aid the Abayudaya community. For questions, contact Shomrei Torah Synagogue at (818) 854-7650 https://sts.shulcloud.com/payment.php Jay Sand, guitarist and children's music teacher, dad of three girls and world traveler (much more so before he became the dad of three girls), developed the All Around This World curriculum with his children as a way to introduce them to the countries he's already visited and the many more he plans to visit with them. Jay held his first All Around This World classes in 2009 in his West Philadelphia living room. (Vintage Annals will be putting out this book by late September) I want to be clear that neither Flo nor I want anyone to think her life, or this episode, is meant to be Inspiration Porn in any way. Flo would be ok with the porn part as she has always been a sex positive photographer and artist, and even did a Playboy shoot in 1976 that she designed and photographed. Flo has also been an activist and fought for the rights of disabled people for years. Lastly she is one of the funniest, and at times, raunchiest 77 year old jewish females I have ever met, which is also why I enjoy interviewing her for this episode, and why I am working with her now. When Flo is out taking photos with an assistant and when she needs the lens to zoom, she asks her assistant to give it a hard on. Please enjoy.  I want to thank Karen Gottfired to connecting me to Flo when I was looking for folks to interview about Arlene's work.  I want to thank Gigi at 2 by 2 media for committing to support their work at twobytwomedia. They will be  putting out zines and books of Flo's work.   I want to thank Flo herself for working on this with me.  For more info on Flo Fox  https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/flo-fox-69-project.html Flo Fox's Youtube Page www.youtube.com/@flofox9831 VAA Sponsored Flo Fox's 69 Fotos Instagram Page and Website  https://www.instagram.com/flofox69fotos/ www.vintageannalsarchive.com/flo-fox-69-project.html Two by Two Media  Instagram and Website  www.instagram.com/twobytwomedia/ www.twobytwomedia.org/flo-fox/ Songs used  Richie by BJ Snowden  https://bjsnowdenmusic.com/ I Never Feel Alone (Instrumental) There Was a Light (Instrumental)  https://www.stephenbluhm.fun/ More info on Jewish Vintage Annals Archive https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/the-jewish-vintage-annals-archive---digital-online-archive-and-podcast.html Please Support If you'd like to support this project please join our Patreon. HE HAS A RARE FORM OF CANCER Filmmaker Amos Poe was recently diagnosed with a rare, aggressive cancer that has left him too weak to continue working. Following a recent barrage of testing, a treatment plan is finally coming together. His family and friends are hoping for the best while knowing the road to recovery will be a long and grueling one. The costs of care and testing leading up to treatment have been astronomical, even with insurance. The treatment itself and the aftercare will be nearly insurmountable without all of our help. https://www.gofundme.com/f/amos-poe-is-our-friend-and-now-he-needs-all-of-us Hosted, Researched, and Edited by Richie Wexler  Songs used  Richie by BJ Snowden  https://bjsnowdenmusic.com/ I Never Feel Alone (Instrumental) There Was a Light (Instrumental)  https://www.stephenbluhm.fun/ More info on Jewish Vintage Annals Archive https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/the-jewish-vintage-annals-archive---digital-online-archive-and-podcast.html Please Support If you'd like to support this project please join our Patreon. Ep 7: Arlene Gottfried Legacy Project - Part 1 (Photographer)

All I can say is that I truly understand that Arlene Gottfried was the greatest photographer of here generation. If Robert Frank was the father, and Diane Arbus the mother, then Arlene is the first daughter of photography. I have been working on this since September and plan on releasing two more parts. My plan is to garner interest about a documentary art other form to work on a video documentary project on her life. Her work changed my life! It also took me about eight years to get this project going, so just don't ever quit anything that has meaning for you. Ep 6: Eddie Davis (Musician)

I met Eddie Davis in 1983 when he played my bar mitzvah. I am very proud to present this particular episode as I started this project as a way to share stories of old school Jewish musicians in Philadelphia. Eddie is the real deal and one of the most dynamic and talented musicians out there. We talk about how he got his start in music, working with Chubby Checker, knowing Dayrl Hall, and his infamous Tom Jones impersonation. Ep 5: Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns)

Ep 12: Tracii Guns I refer to Tracii in this episode as the Richard Linklater of Metal, which I think is the best way to describe someone who embeds spirituality, philosophy into his life and music, and goes on wonderful tangents that make you understand how much thought goes into his everyday actions. One expects a certain flavor in terms of classic metal and Tracii provides that, but also goes against the grain and and incorporates influences such as Kabuki theater, Prog rock, Psychedelic music, and even covers a James Brown song. Welcome to the world of Tracii. There are not many other people in the world that started writing songs at 5 years old, had a band at 8, hung out with Slash in high school, became a famous metal guitarist by his early 20's, and started Guns and Roses and L.A. Guns! Tracii is such a down to earth impressive and thoughtful person. Please enjoy. We reference a podcast episode with Helen Russell that can be access below which greatly influenced this episode. I felt like I really knew and understood Tracii by the end of our chat and I hope you will as well. We talk about everything from Led Zeppelin, to Ronnie James Dio, to Psychedelic Mushrooms, to bad teachers, to bar mitzvahs, and the kind of stuff that Tracii collects. Ep 4: Gabe and Herbie

*Trigger Warning - This episode mentions a suicide.   (Jewish Stories of Philadelphia) Episode 11: Gabe and Herbie. I have a talk with Gabriel Nathan who runs a unique suicide prevention out of an 60 year old Herbie VW. We talk about the dream the had as a young child, that he has now achieved, and came from seeing "The Love Bug" (on VHS) with his Aunt. And how the hell he bought his first Herbie car at age 14. This is a tough, but uplifting story, with a happy ending.     About Gabe and Herbie  Enter Gabriel Nathan, a mental health and suicide awareness advocate from the Philadelphia suburbs who drives a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle daily. Why is this car so important, you may ask? It’s because this specific Beetle is a replica of Herbie the Love Bug, the charming little car from the 1969 film “The Love Bug.” Nathan, who is a self-described “Herbie freak,” uses Herbie to attract attention to the these issues that plague humanity through the use of a rear window graphic, which reads “Drive out suicide, Stop suicide now,” as well as lists both the website www.DriveOutSuicide.org and the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Many people may not know this, but Herbie the Love Bug is the only car to ever attempt suicide in motion picture history. By knowing this, Nathan knew he had to use Herbie, a car that many people recognize and love, to draw attention to suicide awareness.  Article About Gabe    https://www.inquirer.com/life/herbie-the-love-bug-suicide-prevention-awareness-gabe-nathan-20191204.html Short Film about Gabe and Herbie  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlQz0KDJJGg This film and road-trip is being generously supported by: Bud Clayman, OC87 Recovery Diaries, The Community Foundation of New Jersey, Dr. Frank Campbell of Campbell & Associates LOSSteam Postvention Workshops & Training, and the Reel Mind Film Festival. Ep 3: Meryl Meisler

We speak to renown Photographer Meryl Meisler. I don't want to give much away, so here are some cool things people said about Meryl's work Although I will say Meryl is a hilarious human, and that's a high bar for a person in my book! I will also say my life is much better with Meryl in it.  Rich Wexler  Vintage Annals Archive  "A clubby by night and a teacher by day, it was not until she retired in 2010 that she started to reopen her extraordinary archives" " Meryl Meisler captures the moments of intense joy and pure madness" "Whether they are improvised at home, in party rooms or in clubs, the dance floors are breeding grounds for characters on which she cannot help but aim the lens." "A joyful and crazy work. " "From bar mitzvahs and weddings to punk gigs and go-go bars, Meryl Meisler obsessively documented all walks of life in 1970s New York, finding ‘funny’ wherever she went." "Everything seems unreasonable and possible. And the photographer takes care never to widen the field of vision and “game” too much." "Driven by impertinence and humour, Meryl captured moments of intense joy and pure craziness" "Meryl Meisler captures the moments of intense joy and pure madness of the early days of disco and immerses us in a fascinating city and era" Info about Meryl can be found on her website  https://www.merylmeisler.com I highly recommend getting her books. Not only are they amazing but her first book I bought for like $30 five years ago is now worth $500, and for a good reason! Ep 2: Sara Sherr, Karaoke DJ

This week, a fun yet revealing talk between two long-time Philadelphia karaoke DJ's, Sara Sherr & Dr Thunder.  "Sara and her company Sing Your Life are practically synonymous with Karaoke around here, and her nights are always packed and a lot of fun. By the time I started hosting weekly karaoke back in 2010, Sara was already well established and rightfully popular among singers who want something more than just sloppy-drunk scream-athons of the same 5 songs every week. That same year, she was named Best Karaoke In Philly by Philadelphia Magazine. It's always therapeutic trading war stories with Sara, one of a small club who know what it's like to be the center of the whiskey-soaked storm that is bar karaoke. Even if you're not a singer I hope you'll enjoy eavesdropping on two KJ's dishing about the pros and cons of handing microphones to everyone from rugrats to retirees." - Dr Thunder [GUEST] Find Sara Sherr at SingYourLifeKaraoke.com or https://www.instagram.com/singyourlifephillykaraoke/ on Instagram.
