JOACHIM SPIETH
by JOACHIM SPIETH
Joachim Spieth is a German DJ, music producer and label owner who emerged musically in the late nineties and has since developed a multi-faceted spectrum of sound between the poles of ambient and spherical techno. Characteristic for his work is the attention to detail and a sensitive sensorium for the creation of atmospheres, which one can hardly escape, no matter if this takes place in his studio work or in his performances. After several years of intensive collaboration with Wolfgang Voigt’s Kompakt imprint, he founded his own label, Affin, in 2007, which has been constantly developing ever since and has made a name for itself internationally. Besides quite a few EP’s and collaborations, he has released a number of albums in the past years such as Irradiance, Tides, Ousia, Terrain as well as the recently released Reshape projekt, which features variations of his music tracks by Alva Noto, ASC, bvdub and others. In addition to the albums, the Textures Sound Library series was created,

Affin Ambient Works (2022 - 2026) | Curated by Joachim Spieth
A selection of works from Affin, released between 2022 and 2026. Over time, a distinct sense of space has emerged - shaped by slower movement, extended forms and a shared sensitivity for detail. Many of the artists gathered here have crossed paths repeatedly, forming quiet connections that continue to evolve across releases. Rather than following a linear narrative, the mix unfolds as a continuous passage, where transitions remain subtle and boundaries dissolve. It captures a phase defined less by individual moments and more by their relationships - a field of sound that expands gradually and invites sustained listening. Compiled and mixed by Joachim Spieth. track listing 01. Mathias Villard - Swarms 02. Markus Guentner - Whispers In Nebula 03. Joachim Spieth - Shine 04. Galán - Spieth - Guentner - Noïn 05. Phobia
Over the past years, my focus has gradually shifted towards more reduced and introspective forms of sound - less driven by structure, more by subtle internal movement. My new 10” EP Lurk, released on the Polish label FOMO_, continues this direction. The record is part of the label’s Thresholds series, which explores transitional states - moments where perception begins to shift, but hasn’t yet fully resolved. This idea immediately resonated with me. Both tracks on Lurk are built around very subtle changes and internal tension. Phobia introduces a restrained rhythmic framework with slow, broken beats, surrounded by field recordings and warm, evolving textures. The piece develops gradually, focusing on density and presence rather than progression. Subliminal moves further into an ambient space. It’s more open and less defined, unfolding as a continuous undercurrent rather than a structured composition. Conceptually, the release aligns with what the series describes as Pre-Visions — signals that emerge from within, where the body registers a shift before it can be translated into thought. This approach reflects how I currently understand music: not as something that explains, but as something that allows certain states to become perceptible. Lurk will be available as a 10” vinyl and digital edition. shop links https://joachimspieth.substack.com/p/lurk

Chain
This compilation traces fragments and developments of my musical work between 2011 and 2026. Loosely connected by dub as both attitude and sonic language, the material moves between ambient, stripped-down club music and timeless in-between spaces.

Conversion, the second opus from German electronic duo Guentner + Spieth, dives deep into their shared musical roots to reinterpret them through a contemporary, nuanced lens. The result is a body of work that blends ambient expansiveness with dub-inspired detail - layered soundscapes that balance openness with structure. Unbound by conventional formats, the album moves fluidly between rhythmic depth and atmospheric stillness. Bass drums appear alongside quiet passages, carried by floating pads, carefully placed accents, and a sense of space that feels both introspective and organic. Conversion is both a tribute to shared origins and a statement of artistic evolution. Created in a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, Conversion reflects formative influences of early ambient, dub, and deep techno releases while combining them with the artists characteristic signatures. Both made their debut on the legendary Cologne label Kompakt in the early 2000s and were part of Wolfgang Voigt's trend-setting Pop Ambient series. They have since independently developed distinctive positions within electronic music: Guentner with his cinematic-atmospheric albums such as Theia and Onda on the label A Strangely Isolated Place. While Spieth heads the Affin label with its deep, hypnotic sound aesthetic, he releases a steady stream of his own works such as Irradiance, or the more recent Retrace. Conversion is less retrospective and more a continuation of a finely tuned dialog that invites introspection with its minimalist compositions, organic hues, and cavernous depth. Each track on this "after-hours" album unfolds with deliberate subtlety, drawing the listener into an immersive experience where sound becomes both space and emotion. Between structure and expanse, density and silence, a work of quiet intensity unfolds that is club-compatible. press reactions “Conversion bears testament to shared provenance and lineage as well as artistic evolution.” Igloo Magazine “If ever there was a case for deep listening, this is it.” Magazine Sixty “Conversion stands as a finely tuned exploration of texture, tone, and emotional space that is equally suited for introspective listening or late-night immersion.” Chain D.L.K. “Deep, rhythmic, and bathed in texture, it marked the next musical evolution and a harbinger of what is to come.” Delayed “Textures build one upon the other to enhance dimension and symmetry, causing a mix of joy, comfort, fear and anxiety, at the hands of something found, and something lost.” White Light // White Heat “If you also love [as much as I do] their solo works, you will find that here, together, the multiplier is higher. They’re truly at the top of their game here, ...” Headphone Commute credits

Utopia
Arcadia brings together zakè, Joachim Spieth, and Markus Guentner in a collaborative work that thoughtfully expands the possibilities of ambient and drone music. Released via Affin, the album merges the trio’s distinct artistic voices into a coherent whole, resulting in a body of work that is both contemplative and richly textured. Each artist contributes a defining element to the album’s sonic architecture: zakè’s emotive soundscapes, Spieth’s meticulous minimalism, and Guentner’s vast, atmospheric layers. Their approaches converge seamlessly, crafting an immersive experience that moves fluidly between structure and abstraction, serenity and quiet intensity. Rather than adhering to ambient music conventions, Arcadia subtly reconfigures them, offering a profound exploration of mood, space, and stillness. Intricate layers unfold with restraint and clarity, inviting the listener into a world where time seems to dissolve. As their first joint endeavor as a trio, Arcadia stands as a testament to their shared sensitivity and craftsmanship. Available on CD, the album is a nuanced and deeply resonant addition to the ambient canon, rewarding attentive listening with its quiet depth and elegant design. press reactions “Three renowned representatives of modern-day ambient music and textured atmospherics join forces to release a meticulously crafted album, where tonal colors flow gently, adorned with sinuous micro-details and subtle variations, inviting the listener to immerse themselves in a revitalizing spiritual bath..” – Igloo Magazine “This really is quite the meeting of heavyweights.” – Moonbuilding

Nocturna
Nocturna is the first collaborative album between New Zealand musician Andrew Thomas and German artist Joachim Spieth. Inspired by fleeting moments of beauty in nature, where light illuminates and then disappears into the shadows, Thomas began composing on the piano during Summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Gathering piano fragments like treasured relics, he passed them on to Spieth some months later, as Summer was now dawning in the Northern Hemisphere. Spieth wove the piano’s delicate tones into something new, preserving its organic essence while illuminating certain sounds and removing others. The textures within Nocturna are shaped by light, time, and the discernment of each artist - as what to keep became as important as what to leave out. The shadow of what used to be allows a strange and delicate mood to arise. Though the piano remains at the heart of the album, Spieth’s intricate sonic layers form a spectral web around the immersive soundscape, while the piano’s fragile notes climb tentatively like tendrils of a plant. Nocturna sits on the threshold of ambient and modern classical, with elements of sound design that make it an especially pleasing piece with deeper listening. As Nocturna unfolds, it transports the listener into a space of contemplation and mystery—expansion and enclosure, and perhaps reflecting the increase in nocturnal activity of nature on a Summers evening. Light and shadow, the duality of hemispheres, and the promise of Summer’s arrival converge, and then fade once more into the night. press reactions “Questing for the ephemeral and elemental rather than the infinite, beauty is all in the moment.” – Electronic Sound Magazine “The record is a fresh example of a timeless sound sought by so many ambient and instrumental artists.” – Melted Form This album sits on the threshold between ambient and contemporary classical music, featuring sound design elements that invite deep, contemplative listening. – Rmas.mx It is a sonic impressionism, focused not on building a narrative, but rather an impression and mood. – Nowamuzyka.pl

Appearance
Fragments is the first joint album by Joachim Spieth and Warmth. It brings together two musical characters with an affinity for expansive, imaginary soundscapes and atmospheric compositions. Agustin Mena is a Spanish ambient producer and has been operating under his 2 alter egos ‘Warmth’ and ‘SVLBRD’ on the two labels he founded, Archives and Faint. Joachim Spieth has been running the label Affin for almost 2 decades and is a regular contributor to Wolfgang Voigt's Pop Ambient series on the Kompakt label. The first musical points of contact between the two were in the form of mutual remix projects. This exchange laid the foundation for Fragments, which now reveals the intersections for a sense of space and timelessness. On seven tracks, the album takes the listener on a walk through organic textures and places of longing. press reactions “The joint work by Spieth and Mena consists of seven short recordings which, true to their title, seem like fragments of a larger whole. They are an almost benedictine exercise in discrete modulations of minimalist sound.” – Nowamuzyka.pl “These contradictory associations serve as a fitting introduction for this immersive, spellbinding album of immersive arctic ambient, which is alternately steamy warm and frosty, soft yet cutting, alien yet somehow earthy and organic.” – Micro Genre Music “The divisions between the tracks become irrelevant when you fully immerse yourself in the album, which begins to permeate your consciousness” – Radioaktiv.it “There’s a stunning resonance here, and with both playing off each other’s strengths, the results are something beautifully overpowering” – Sun 13

Longing
Joachim Spieth presents his new project, "Retrace," on his eminent electronic label, Affin. Dub influences and cooling, ambient electronics blend to create complex, aqueous soundscapes. The seven track album reveals detailed textures and crystalized melodies that captivate the imagination. Like glittering drops of water, the sound elements combine to slowly filter through sonic biotopes until they extend across the spectrum in full frequency. In “Retrace”, Spieth offers a fresh perspective on ambient soundscapes while retaining the signature elements that have come to define his musical identity. “Retrace” unfolds with meticulous precision, leading listeners through a labyrinth of sonic possibilities where every sound and texture serves a purpose in the narrative. press reactions “An album in which Spieth’s crystal clear compositions find new ground in his ever-evolving world of sound. ” – Sun13 “Perfectly curated as a soundtrack for any time of your day, these seven pieces will guide you back into the meaning of this reality” – Headphone Commute “Spieth’s compositions should be regarded as several chapters of a single stream of sound, a narrative that has an almost supernatural emotional power, capable of evoking a sense of permanence and infinity” – Radioaktiv “The result is a short but successful album that recalls the best achievements of glitch dub at the beginning of the 21st century” – Nowamuzyka

Recall (Luigi Tozzi Blue Dub)
"Recall" is a pre-release single for Joachim Spieth's upcoming album "Retrace", which will be released in October. It features a remix of the album opener by renowned Italian producer Luigi Tozzi, who is internationally recognized and celebrated for his work on labels such as Hypnus, Non Series and Outis Music. Tozzi's interpretation skillfully blends his unique production style with Spieth's deep, ambient and dub-tinged original track, creating a seamless fusion of their different musical identities. This collaboration emphases the synergy between two prominent figures in the electronic music scene, presented in a sophisticated and subtle way. The 10" will be available as a collector's item in September 2024, as a limited edition that has been handcrafted. Additionally, a digital download version will be available for wider accessibility. It also offers a captivating insight into Joachim Spieth's forthcoming album "Retrace", and could foreshadow what may follow. credits

Scope
In 2001, Regensburg-based Markus Guentner and Affin’s Joachim Spieth first crossed paths through their contributions to Kompakt’s Pop Ambient series. Their creative synergy resurfaces with ‘Overlay,' a six-track album that amalgamates decades of their distinctive styles - a harmonious blend of Guentner's ethereal, atmospheric textures and Spieth's pulsating rhythms. “We envisioned a process akin to masking and unveiling, revealing certain elements while fading others, mirroring the essence of the album titles themselves. This reflects how we approached the audio material, a philosophy extended to our album. This collaboration thrived on a foundation of trust, cultivated organically, much like our previous joint endeavors. Musically, we entrust each other almost instinctively”. With meticulously crafted tracks showcasing their artistry in creating evocative sonic landscapes, this release marks the inaugural entry in a series of collaborative works by the duo. "With this album, the flow of things knows no distinct start or finish—rather, it's a continuous stream of material in motion." 'Overlay' will be released digitally and on a limited edition CD on November 3 via Spieth's Affin Records. press reactions “Oozing with narcotized and eroticized romantic impulses, Overlay feels like a living revenant from a voluptuous dream. One hopes that Guentner and Spieth’s new series will give Pop Ambient a run for its money” – A Closer Listen “an album that captures a time and pulls you out of your present state, teleporting you out to far off places.” – Sun13 “a solid portion of music typical of both of these producers – spacious and monumental” – Nowamuzyka “a harmonious blend between Güntner’s ethereal, atmospheric textures and Spieth’s pulsating rhythms” – Radioaktiv

Texture 40.1 (Claudio PRC Atmospheric Mix)
After contributing a timeless track "Limnic" to the first part of the "Affinity" 12" series in 2015, we are pleased to announce Claudio PRC once again as part of the Affin label. The Berlin-based DJ, producer and label owner found the time to submit the musical input for a strictly limited 10" vinyl alongside his numerous own projects. "Textures 40.1", a sample of "Textures 1 (Sound Library)" by label founder Joachim Spieth was taken up by Claudio PRC as the epicenter for the two tracks of this limited 10". The source material was subjected to a detailed elaboration, which in the result takes into account the ambient sound aesthetics, but carries them elegantly on the dancefloor. The mastering was done by Artefacts Mastering (Berlin) and the graphic design was realized by Markus Guentner. The record is a strictly limited lathe cut. Reshape brings together musical interpretations by alva noto, ASC, bvdub, Warmth, Markus Guentner, Simone Giudice, zakè, and Głós — artists known for their distinctive approaches to ambient, dub, and experimental electronic music. Each rework revisits and transforms pieces from Joachim Spieth’s earlier creative phase, forming a reflective and deeply textured conclusion to the 15th anniversary of the Affin label. Originally released in 2022 as a double 12" vinyl, Reshape is now available in an elegant 6-panel Digipak edition, offering a new physical format for collectors and listeners alike. press reactions “It shows not only Spieth’s spectacular work but also that of his contributors including interpretations by alva noto, ASC, bvdub, Warmth, Markus Guentner, Simone Giudice, zakè, and Głós.” – Igloomag “Reshape is everything that’s good about Affin, all wrapped up in a neat sunset bow. The sound design is second to none, with the fiercest bass this side of a Ben Frost record, while still sounding as airy and elegant as Nils Frahm or Scott Morgan at their most accessible.” – Spectrum Culture “the album cannot be defined as a collection of remixes, but rather as a real transformation, a different reading that comes from the different background of each musician involved.” – Radioaktiv

Terrain 2
With ‘Terrain,’ Joachim Spieth presents the fourth long player on his Affin imprint. The follow-up album to ‘Ousia’ (2021), ‘Terrain,’ reflects on the human relationship with nature. The album title is a reference to a musical language that layers Spieth’s music production practices and intimacy with nature. ‘Terrain’ was forged in deep solitude. “It’s an interplay of euphoric flashes and introspection,” says Spieth. The eight compositions take the listener into a captivating cascade of sonic textures resembling internal states fluctuations and emotional release. The tension between the organic warmth and static curves broadens tones into liquified roars and empty spaces. Unlike Spieth’s previous albums, ‘Terrain’ holds more intimate gestures and emotional sensibility. Soothing frequencies here are intended to create a state of awareness in the listener. It is a work of conceptual and emotional beauty, evoking a form of spatial imagery that is as grounding as elevating. Following the regular LP release earlier this year, a 6-panel Digipak CD version has now been added to complement the album’s physical editions. press reactions “Quite related and on a par with Alva Noto’s album Xerrox Volume 2.” – Groove “It is a work of conceptual and emotional beauty, evoking a form of spatial imagery that is as grounding as elevating.” – Headphone Commute – Best of 2022 “The sound has incredible depth. And width. Even with the accents that give these sounds the necessary tension, the music induces an incredibly relaxed state” – Ambientblog.net “Terrain is a masterclass on ambient intimacy and spatial texturing” – Tone Harvest all reviews: linktr.ee/terrain_album

Textures [Sound Library 1]
"Textures” is a sound library that I've created during Winter 2021. It is a carefully selected collection of cinematic and evolving sounds that can be easily incorporated into your work, but they are primarily intended as a starting point for your own creative process like a painter's palette of colors. All included sounds were produced for this sound library and have not been used on any of my releases before. https://joachimspieth.bandcamp.com/album/textures-sound-library contents Textures Sound Library includes more than 900 mb WAVs The audio samples are provided as uncompressed 24bit 48khz stereo WAV format files and should be universally compatible with any DAW or sample playback software or hardware produced and mastered with Ableton Live 10 Suite Ableton Push 2 Ableton Live Sampler Native Instruments Kontakt 6 PaulXStretch Elysia Mpressor Avalon AD2055 EQ Thermionic Culture Swift Hendy Amps Michelangelo Custom Audio Germany HDE-250 All sounds w + p by Joachim Spieth Mastered by Nicolò Papini at Artefacts Mastering Studio Berlin Artwork by Joachim Spieth ℗ & © Affin 2021 Upon purchase you have a personal license of the sound library to use the samples in your productions, but the samples may not be used for resale (on other sample libraries). https://linktr.ee/joachimspieth http://artefactsmastering.com/

Cahaya Bulan
Originally released in 2020 as a double 12", Tides marked Joachim Spieth’s second full-length album on his Affin imprint. The record quickly sold out and has now been reissued as a carefully crafted CD edition presented in a 6-panel digipak. The album unfolds across eight tracks, shaped by endlessly interwoven layers and subtle shifts of tone, tracing a path between immersive, melancholic, and euphoric moments. Flowing textures and atmospheric depth merge into a vivid emotional landscape — a signature element of Spieth’s sonic world. Press reactions: “Tides is a masterpiece of dark ambient music.” – 5Mag.net “What you do get is lush, ever moving soundscapes that provide layers of sound and temperature, that move in different ways.” – Drifting, Almost Falling “Spieth’s ambient is of XL size, pretentious and powerful that you just can’t ignore.” – Terminal313 “The entire album has a cool, lush beauty to it, rewarding the listener at any time of day or night with a sonic excursion to other lands.” – Igloomag credits

With Ousia, Joachim Spieth presents his third full-length album on his label Affin. Originally released as a double 12", the record translates ephemeral impressions into cinematic soundscapes and unfolds across eight pieces that form an intense, emotional journey — exploring the subtle interplay between external perception and inner reflection. The album also features Mutuus, a captivating and unique collaboration between Markus Guentner and Joachim Spieth — their first joint work in over two decades, following their appearance on the inaugural Pop Ambient compilation curated by Wolfgang Voigt. Reissued in 2023 as a CD edition presented in a 6-panel digipak. Press reactions: “The German artist signs an hour of dreamy and profound ambient music in which we are fascinated by the imaginative character of the compositions and Spieth’s ability to fill and inhabit the space with his music.” - Radioaktiv “Ousia plays firmly inside the pocket of modern ambient electronica while finessing and polishing the spatial and aural possibilities of the sphere.” - Backseat Mafia “The album is so effective that it sucks you in, stopping time and freezing you in your tracks (pun intended!).” - Delayed all reviews can be found here: linktr.ee/Ousia_Album

ABOUT THIS SHOW
Joachim Spieth is a German DJ, music producer and label owner who emerged musically in the late nineties and has since developed a multi-faceted spectrum of sound between the poles of ambient and spherical techno.
