Espiritualismo y Medicina: Healthcare Determinants of Trust Among Latines
Produced and directed by José Caballero, Patricia Lynne Bessie, Alexia Jayde Martinez. In this podcast episode, we explore a central question: What are the determinants of healthcare trust among Latines? We are joined by Dr. Roberto Lewis-Fernández, a psychiatrist and Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University’s Medical School. Together, we examine three potential drivers of trust -- class, health gradient, and education -- and Dr. Lewis-Fernández concludes with concrete recommendations for strengthening trust among heterogeneous groups within the Latine community.Importantly, the goal of this episode is not to diagnose a universal or singular narrative about Latines in the United States. Instead, we acknowledge the profound heterogeneity within this population and critically interrogate the ontological and epistemological assumptions behind the category of “Latines” itself. Through this lens, we aim to surface the structural, cultural, and experiential factors that shape healthcare trust, as well as the implications these dynamics carry for real-world clinical encounters.
