Healthy Relationships: Green Flags, Communication, and What Real Love Looks Like
Send us Fan MailAfter talking about toxic relationships and red flags in their last episode, the hosts of Life Coaches Unfiltered flip the script, and explore what healthy relationships really look like. From green flags and emotional regulation to communication, consistency, and mutual respect, this conversation challenges the idea that healthy love is boring and shows why stability is actually the goal. The episode also gets personal. Michelle, Doree & Desiree reflect on how family dynamics shaped what felt “normal,” how old patterns show up in dating and friendships, and how healing changes what we are willing to accept. If you’ve ever wondered whether healthy relationships are supposed to feel calm instead of chaotic, this episode offers honest insight, relatable stories, and a grounded look at what makes connection work.In This EpisodeWhy healthy relationships can feel unfamiliar if you grew up around chaos or dysfunction. How family patterns influence the way we choose partners and friends. The difference between excitement and instability in relationships.Green flags like consistency, reliability, accountability, and emotional regulation. Why communication and speaking up for yourself are essential in adult relationships. How healing changes your attraction patterns and your standards.Key TakeawaysThe hosts share that it took time to understand that their early models of love and family did not represent the full picture of what healthy relationships can be. They discuss how some people are drawn to familiar dysfunction because it feels easier to navigate, even when it isn’t good for them. The episode makes the case that many people confuse intensity with connection, when what they actually need is consistency, honesty, and safety.Another major theme is self-awareness. The hosts talk about how healthy relationships require emotional regulation, being able to pause before reacting, and saying “this doesn’t work for me” without fear. They also explore the idea that as people heal, their “green flags” change too, and what once seemed attractive may no longer fit who they are becoming.Related episodes: If you enjoyed this episode, you may also enjoy listening to ~ Setting Boundaries and Safe PeopleIs your teen choosing college based on pressure or purpose? When Love Turns Toxic: Signs You’re in a Dumpster Fire Relationship
Send us Fan MailJoin Desiree, Doree & Michelle for this raw and honest episode of Life Coaches Unfiltered. The 3 hosts get real about toxic relationships, red flags, manipulation, and what it takes to finally say, “enough.” They explore how dysfunction can feel normal when you grow up surrounded by it, why toxic dynamics can show up in dating, friendships, family relationships, and even marriages, and how fear, isolation, and low self-worth can keep people stuck far too long. The conversation goes deep into the emotional toll of toxic relationships, from lying and controlling behavior to jealousy, anger, cheating, and unsafe conflict. The hosts also talk about the hard, necessary work of therapy, nervous system regulation, and rebuilding self-esteem after leaving harmful relationships.Key takeaways & how to move forwardThis episode highlights the emotional cost of staying too long in toxic dynamics. The hosts discuss how manipulation often convinces people they are unlovable or that nobody else will want them, which makes leaving feel impossible. They also talk about how therapy can help reveal the truth of a relationship once the “blinkers” come off.A major theme is recovery: learning to trust yourself again, rebuilding self-esteem, and recognizing that leaving a toxic relationship is often a decision you make more than once. The conversation closes with a strong reminder that healing is possible, but it takes honesty, support, and a willingness to stop calling chaos loveDomestic Violence help is availableIf you are experiencing domestic violence and need help, there is help. Is Work–Life Balance Bulls**t? Redefining Balance, Boundaries and Burnout in Real Life
Send us Fan MailIf someone secretly recorded your evenings, would it look like you have a healthy work–life balance OR that you just switched from one job to another? In this candid episode of Life Coaches Unfiltered, Desiree, Michelle, and Doree get painfully honest about what “balance” actually looks like in midlife when you’re juggling a business, a JOB, caregiving, creativity, family, and an exhausted nervous system. You’ll hear confessions about answering emails at music bingo, working through weekends, binge‑watching instead of resting, and feeling like you’re on a treadmill with no off-switch. The coaches unpack why so many high‑achievers feel behind all the time, how values (family, creativity, health, spiritual life) should drive your version of balance, and why boundaries at work are non‑negotiable, even if your boss expects you online at 11 p.m.They also dig into:What work–life balance really means when you’re a go‑go‑go person vs. someone who craves quiet. How to know when work has taken over your life AND what it’s costing your health, relationships, and joy.The role of values (family time, creative pursuits, wellness, spirituality) in designing a custom “balance recipe” that actually fits your life. How to start setting boundaries with demanding bosses, constant email, and unrealistic expectations. Why saying “no” is a complete sentence and a nervous system intervention.Micro‑shifts like time‑blocking, small creative breaks, and redefining productivity beyond hustle culture. If you’re tired of generic advice about “self-care” and want a real‑life conversation about working, caregiving, creating, and still trying to have a life, this episode is for you.Related episodes: Burnout is not a badge of honor: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2448048/episodes/18764014Is your teen choosing college based on pressure or purpose? Why Your Brain Won’t Shut Off: Breaking the Overthinking Loop
Send us Fan MailIf overthinking burned calories, half of us would already be in our goal jeans. Instead, it’s burning us out. It’s impacting our sleep, time, and sanity. In this episode of Life Coaches Unfiltered, Desiree, Michelle, and Doree get honest about what happens when your brain won’t shut off, you’re "catastrophizing" every scenario, and you’re replaying past conversations on a loop. They unpack what overthinking actually is, how it shows up as rumination about the past and worry about the future, and why your nervous system believes worst-case scenarios are keeping you safe. Along the way, they share real-life stories - from ice-storm prep with contingency plans all the way to Z, to lying awake worrying about insurance claims, to imagining you’ve ruined a relationship just because someone hasn’t texted back. You’ll also hear how perfectionism, people-pleasing, grief, and busyness all feed overthinking, and where the line is between healthy reflection and mental torture. Most importantly, the coaches offer simple, practical tools you can use right away: how to notice when you’re looping, how to get thoughts out of your head and onto paper, and how to gently question your own stories with “Is this true?” and “Where is the evidence?”.In this episode, we cover:What overthinking is and how it differs from problem-solvingRumination about the past vs. anxiety about the futureReal-life examples of catastrophizing (storms, insurance, step-parenting, texts)How grief and constant busyness can delay emotions until you finally slow downThe perfectionism trap and analysis paralysis at work and at homeWhen overthinking becomes a problem (sleep, looping, stalled decisions, relationships)List-making, brain dumps, and time-limited “thinking windows”Becoming your own inner coach with evidence checks and kinder self-talkHow to approach conversations when you’re afraid you hurt someoneYou’ll walk away with:Language to spot when you’ve crossed from planning into overthinkingPractical tools to interrupt 3 AM spirals and fall asleep more easilyA way to question your stories without gaslighting yourselfPermission to take one small imperfect action instead of waiting for things to feel perfectIs your teen choosing college based on pressure or purpose? Living on High Alert: Hypervigilance & Anxiety in Mildlife
Send us Fan MailWhen life finally calms down, does your brain immediately ask, “Okay, but what’s about to go wrong?” In this episode of Life Coaches Unfiltered, Desiree and Michelle dive into hypervigilance and what it feels like. Living on constant high alert, always waiting for the other shoe to drop and how it shows up for stressed, burned-out women in midlife. From obsessing over germs after COVID to mentally rehearsing every worst‑case scenario in your business, relationships, and health, they talk about how hypervigilance is often a learned survival response from grief, illness, trauma, caregiving, and years of chronic stress, not a personal flaw. You’ll hear real stories about how COVID impacted Desiree and her fear of germs, backseat driving with a fear of car accidents, and always choosing the restaurant seat that faces the door. The coaches unpack the difference between healthy intuition and hypervigilance, why your nervous system may still act as if the emergency is happening long after the crisis is over, and how mirror neurons mean your dysregulated state can spread. The good news? Calm is also contagious. They also share practical tools to gently work with hypervigilance instead of shaming yourself for it.In this episode, we talk about:What hypervigilance actually is (and why it’s more than “just anxiety”)How hypervigilance develops after grief, illness, caregiving, chaotic childhoods, or repeated life disruptionsSigns you’re living on high alert: can’t relax when it’s quiet, always scanning for danger, exhausted but unable to shut your brain offThe difference between intuition (calm, grounded, clear) and hypervigilance (urgent, loud, repetitive)How hypervigilance strains sleep, health, and relationships—and why partners can feel criticized or micromanagedSmall, nervous‑system‑friendly practices to start feeling safer in your own bodyIf you're a midlife woman, who's tired of being "on all the time", sleeping with one eye open (figuratively & literally), this episode is for you. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of New Year’s Resolutions
Send us Fan MailNew year, new goals… same burnout? In this episode of Life Coaches Unfiltered, the coaches get real about goal setting, New Year’s resolutions, and why big, lofty goals often backfire - especially for women already exhausted and in survival mode.New Year’s goal-setting sounds great on paper. Next thing you know, you’re two weeks in, already “behind,” and ready to say “forget it” to every resolution you made. In this honest conversation, Desiree, Michelle, and Doree unpack the good, the bad, and the ugly of goal setting, from vision boards and flip charts to bonfire resolutions that go up in smoke (literally).Michelle shares why she loves goals as bite-sized direction (not giant life contracts), how realistic goals create clarity and momentum, and why most people overwhelm themselves with huge, vague resolutions. Doree talks about her mixed feelings as a hypnotherapist during “resolution season,” including her story of throwing a pack of cigarettes into a New Year’s bonfire… then trying to bum a smoke an hour later. Desiree names the pressure and shame that come with goals when you’re in midlife, grieving, caregiving, or just plain tired, and asks the question no one likes to admit: How do you set a goal for a life you haven’t even imagined yet? You’ll hear the difference between resolutions and actual plans, why “all-or-nothing” goals are so damaging, and how to create goals that fit the season you’re in instead of punishing you for not being farther along. The coaches also explore process goals vs. outcome goals, and how tiny, consistent actions beat grand declarations every time.Resources: Send a free email to your future self In this episode, we talk about:Why New Year’s resolutions so often fail. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, the hosts dive deep into the topic of gaslighting—what it means, how it manifests in relationships, and the impact it has on self-perception and emotional health. Spoiler alert: if you've ever felt like you're losing your mind while someone insists you're "too sensitive," this one's for you. Through personal stories, book recommendations, and the kind of candid conversation your therapist would approve of, they unpack the confusion around the term, its origins, and how to recognize and respond to gaslighting without questioning whether you're overreacting. (You're not.)Key Topics in this episode:~ Defining gaslighting and its origins (from the 1938 play and subsequent films—because yes, emotional manipulation is vintage)~ Personal experiences with gaslighting in relationships, family, and friendships (aka the greatest hits of "Did that really just happen?")~ The difference between healthy disagreement and gaslighting (hint: one involves respect, the other involves you Googling "Am I insane?" at 2 AM)~ Signs you might be experiencing gaslighting (e.g., doubting your reality, over-explaining why you're upset about something obviously upsetting, seeking validation from your houseplants)~ The connection between gaslighting and narcissistic abuse (they're like toxic best friends)~ The importance of trusting your intuition and seeking support (Your gut is smarter than you think. Listen to it)~ Strategies for responding to gaslighting and setting boundaries (because "I'm not doing this anymore" is a complete sentence)~ The role of self-care and community in healing (turns out talking to people who don't make you feel bonkers is therapeutic...who knew?)If you resonate with any of the stories or signs discussed, know that you're not alone. Trust your intuition, seek support, and remember: your reality is valid. Even if someone keeps insisting it isn't. Especially then, actually.NOTE: We share resources that may be helpful on your journey, they are affiliate links that help us cover the costs of producing this podcast. Stopping the Anxiety Spiral: (aka "When Your Brain Goes Full Tornado Mode")
Send us Fan MailThe hosts are still riding high from their fancy tea party (fascinators included, dignity optional), but reality quickly sets in as they tackle everyone's favorite mental health villain: anxiety spirals. You know, those delightful moments when your brain decides that forgetting to reply to a text obviously means you're a terrible person who will die alone surrounded by cats. (The cats part doesn't sound so bad, honestly.)We dive deep into the science of why our brains love to catastrophize, explore the "window of tolerance" theory (spoiler: most of our windows are basically cracked open like a sketchy motel room), and share practical strategies that actually work, unlike that advice to "just think positive thoughts" your aunt keeps giving you.Key Topics:Post-tea party analysis (because apparently we can't let go of those fascinators)Anxiety spirals: When your brain becomes a drama queen with a PhD in worst-case scenariosThe art of catastrophizing (we're all experts, no training required)"Window of tolerance" theory—or as we like to call it, "Why we all live in emotional tornado alley"Self-care that goes beyond bubble baths (shocking, we know)Why doom-scrolling at 2 AM isn't actually a hobbyBreathing techniques (yes, you've been doing it your whole life, but hear us out)Setting boundaries without becoming the neighborhood hermitPerfectionism: The overachiever's anxiety specialTaking action when your anxiety brain insists hiding under blankets is the only logical choiceIs your teen choosing college based on pressure or purpose? The Apology Epidemic
Send us Fan Mail Sorry, not sorry! Wait, no—actually sorry for saying sorry. Or wait... In this episode, our hosts tackle the "apology epidemic" that's got more people saying "I'm sorry" than a Canadian tourist convention. They explore why humans (especially the fabulous female variety) have turned apologizing into an Olympic sport, and spoiler alert: it's not doing anyone any favors. Key Topics: - The origins of over-apologizing: because apparently someone decided "existing confidently" wasn't ladylike enough - The difference between "Oops, I genuinely messed up" apologies and "Sorry I breathe oxygen" apologies - How saying sorry 47 times a day turns you into a human doormat (results may vary, side effects include becoming invisible) - Breaking news: You're allowed to take up space! Revolutionary concept, we know - Why we apologize for having feelings (as if emotions were a personal failing rather than, you know, being human) - When you actually DO need to apologize (hint: it's fewer times than you think, but more meaningful than "sorry for existing") - Brilliant alternatives to "I'm sorry"—like "thank you for your patience" (mind = blown) Personal war stories about learning to stop apologizing for everything short of global warming - The epic showdown: genuine kindness vs. performative "niceness" - Delightful tangents about Trader Joe's (because life coaches shop too), TikTok rabbit holes, and waxing nostalgic about the days when news came on paper and music lived in plastic rectangles Amy Schumer - “I’m Sorry” skit (referenced in this episode): https://vimeo.com/253499468 Subscribe so you won't miss our next episode, where we talk about how to break out of an Anxiety spiral. 👍 Like, comment, and subscribe for more real talk and resources. #stopapologizing #lifecoachesunfiltered #lifecoaching #podcast #apologyepidemic #takeupspace #standinyourpower Is your teen choosing college based on pressure or purpose? How Desiree's Journey led her to Coaching
Send us Fan Mail Episode 8 features a deep dive into Desiree's journey as a life coach and her coaching methodologies. Desiree shares her personal journey into coaching, which began in 2016 during a challenging period in her life. In 2020, after her corporate job was eliminated during COVID, she finally pursued her coaching career. Michelle and Doree discuss with Desiree her approach to helping clients, particularly focusing on her use of the Positive Intelligence (PQ) framework. Desiree explains how PQ helps clients identify and manage their self-sabotaging behaviors through understanding their 'saboteurs' and developing their 'sage' mind. The conversation touches on Desiree's specialization in midlife transitions and grief coaching. She emphasized how she helps clients navigate various life changes, from divorce to career transitions, using a combination of tools including somatic work, grief counseling, and PQ techniques. The hosts also discuss the importance of being coachable and open to change, with Desiree highlighting how she provides various tools and approaches, likening her methodology to a 'Golden Corral buffet' where clients can choose what works best for them.
