S4 Episode #62: Ask Höbin Anything (Gnome Edition)

I put out a call for questions. Some of you responded. Others responded too enthusiastically, and may be added to a watch list. Today’s the day I answer your most curious, ridiculous, and suspiciously-specific questions about gnomes, Trench Wars, and whatever else gets tossed into my hat. What did you silly humans ask?QUESTION #1: "Do gnomes really have battle muffins, and if so, what makes them 'battle' worthy?"QUESTION #2: "Is it true that some gnomes ride armadillos into the arena?"QUESTION #3: "Why do gnomes take Trench Wars so seriously?"QUESTION #4: "How do gnomes deal with fear before a match?"QUESTION #5: "What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen at a Trench War match?"QUESTION #6: "Are there forbidden Trench techniques?"QUESTION #7: "Why do some gnomes paint fake buttons on their consoles?"QUESTION #8: "Is Trench Wars still dangerous?"That wraps up not just today's wild ride through battle muffins and sabotage scandals… but also Season 4 of Life of Fiction, the Podcast.Thank you for being part of this journey. S4 Episode #61: Trench Wars — The Stories They Tried to Bury

Welcome to Episode 61 of Life of Fiction. Today, we’re talking about the stories they tried to bury. Not the scoreboards. Not the stats. Not the flashy player cards sold outside the match tunnels. We’re talking about the dirt. The bones. The secrets at the heart of the game. And at the center of it all—what most folks forget, or conveniently gloss over—are the Trench brothers themselves: Burton and Ernie. If you want more hidden lore, strange encounters, or to hear how I almost got arrested for stealing a Trench Wars towel from the VIP tent, visit us at LifeOfFiction.com.Remember: You are MORE than you THINK you are!...see you next time. 🚀Let us know what you thought of the podcast, or if you have any questions, make sure to leave them in the comments or email [email protected]. S4 Episode #60: Gnomecast Confidential: What the Surface Folk Don’t Know

Right, pull up a chair (preferably one that doesn’t hum when you sit on it), and let’s recap the episode the Guild warned me not to publish. In Episode 60 of Life of Fiction – the Podcast, I shared some of my deeply investigative—and probably indictable—observations on Trench Wars, pulled directly from my experience following Alhannah Luckyfeller through the dusty gears and deadly glory of the Games. You see, Trench Wars isn’t a sport. It’s a ritual. It’s defiance wrapped in brass and battle muffins.🔧 What Did We Learn? The Trench is older than its brackets. It started with desperation and mech-building rebellion by two dirt-poor brothers who just wanted to help their dad. Now it’s a cultural pressure valve disguised as entertainment. The Trench Brothers were legends before they were outlaws. Burton and Ernie built the first functional scrap mech and punched injustice square in the badge.Betting scandals are real. People are gambling with gearboxes, favors, and one notable instance… a canoe. I have questions.Sponsors are scary. They don’t just fund pilots—they own them. Contracts include wardrobe clauses, jellybean rituals, and in one case, a cockpit compliance rune that smells like wet mushroom loaf if you disobey orders. (Alhannah refused to confirm this, which means it’s true.)The Forked Helm is real. No records. No rosters. No expressions. Six years, six wins, six vanishings. And now their symbol is scratched under my desk. Which I did not buy on the island.🧠 Things I May Be Investigating (but officially deny):Secret mech parts hidden in bakery supply trucksA referee who may or may not be four raccoons in a trench coatWhether Alhannah is smuggling schematic blueprints inside her socks (plausible)🔧 Takeaway? You think Trench Wars is just gear and sparks? It's a living myth in progress, and the only way to understand it… is to get grease on your soul. This was Episode 60.More to reveal. S4 Episode #59: How Should Progression and Leveling Work

In Episode 59 of Life of Fiction – the Podcast, we ask one of the biggest questions in RPG design: How should heroes grow? From XP-driven advancement and story-based milestones to hybrid models and class trials, this episode explores how leveling systems can become powerful storytelling tools—not just stat spreadsheets. Whether you’re into grinding monsters, earning narrative moments, or unlocking game-changing abilities through epic feats, this conversation challenges the traditional approach to character growth and invites you to help shape a system that makes leveling feel personal, meaningful, and unforgettable.🧠 Key Takeaways from this Episode🎚️ Progression = PurposeIn The Hero Within, leveling isn’t just about stats—it’s about storytelling.Growth should feel like a shift in who your character is, not just what they can do.This episode explores how leveling systems can align with personal arcs and narrative depth.⚔️ XP vs. Milestones vs. HybridThe team dives into the three main systems of advancement:XP-Based – Consistent and predictable, but risks turning growth into a grind.Milestone-Based – Story-driven and emotional, but pacing can be uneven.Hybrid – The best of both: XP for minor boosts, milestones for major evolution. Each method changes how players interact with the world—and how their choices matter.🌟 What Leveling Should Give YouLeveling in The Hero Within could offer:Stat upgrades like Might, Coordination, and ReasonNew skills, class abilities, or role-based powersUnique story rewards, like titles, relationships, or faction influenceSpecial abilities tied to what your character has done, not just how much XP they’ve earnedProgression becomes part of the narrative arc, not just a mechanical routine.🧪 Trials, Feats, and Heroic MomentsNot every level should come easy. The team discusses:Class Trials – Advancement through challenges that fit your archetypeEpic Feats – Surviving legendary encounters, forging alliances, or changing the worldNarrative Milestones – Key story events that alter your character permanentlyThese systems encourage players to grow through story, not just combat.⏳ Pacing and Shared ProgressThe team also explores:Group progression – Everyone levels together to keep story pacing cleanPacing mechanics – Story arcs dictate growth rather than monster countsLevel caps and resets – Big class shifts (like becoming a Warlord or Magus) may “soft reset” character progression for balanced scalingAll of it is aimed at making growth feel earned, without bogging down the fun.💬 Community Questions – Help Shape the System!Should leveling be XP-driven, milestone-triggered, or a hybrid of both? What’s the most exciting kind of reward to get when you level up?Would you enjoy class trials or feat-based unlocks tied to your narrative? How fast should characters grow in a story-focused system?🛠️ Join the conversation at LifeOfFiction.comBecause your growth should be more than math—it should mean something.Thats it. S4 Episode #58: The Wayfarer Class – Survival, Story, and the Spirit of the Journey

In Episode 58 of Life of Fiction – the Podcast, we take a winding path through the mysterious and still-developing Wayfarer class—a character built not for domination, but discovery. These adaptable adventurers thrive on exploration, survival, and cultural connection. Are they a standalone class? A skill tree? A myth wrapped in boots and trail dust? From pathfinding and diplomacy to wilderness intuition and movement mastery, this episode explores what it means to be the hero who sees what others miss… and lives to tell the tale.🧠 Key Takeaways from this Episode🗺️ The Wayfarer: Hero of the Unseen PathWayfarers in The Hero Within aren’t built for conquest—they're built for discovery. They’re the scouts, diplomats, survivalists, and lore-bearers who navigate the edges of the known world and make everything else possible. They don’t just cross the map—they connect the story dots no one else even sees.🧭 Class Progression: Explorer → Wanderer → WayfarerExplorer – Skilled in travel, survival, foraging, and mapmaking.Wanderer – Experienced in environmental reading, negotiation, and adaptation.Wayfarer – A legendary figure whose very presence uncovers hidden paths, secures allies, and shapes world events.Wayfarers evolve through knowledge, movement, and connection—not brute strength or arcane power.🌍 Utility Over CombatThis class thrives in versatility:Scouts new terrainManages resources and survivalTranslates languages and mediates conflictsAdapts to almost any situationThey may not dominate combat… but you’ll miss them the moment they’re gone.🚶‍♂️ Movement = PowerUnlike other classes, mobility is the Wayfarer’s strength:Mastery of difficult terrainAccess to hidden paths and travel bondsWilderness intuition and natural resistanceTools for evasion, redirection, and rapid responseThey control the space between threats.⚖️ A Class on the EdgeOne of the episode’s big questions:Should the Wayfarer be a full class, a subclass, or a universal skill system? The design team explores pros and cons of:Full standalone class designBranching from Hunter or Tinkerer archetypesModularity: letting any class “pick up Wayfarer traits”💬 Community Questions – Help Shape the Decision!Does the Wayfarer deserve its own path—or should its essence be shared across classes? What kind of survival, travel, or exploration mechanics excite you as a player? Can a non-combat class still feel powerful and vital?🛠️ Join the conversation at LifeOfFiction.comBecause not every hero storms the gates—some map the way there.NEXT TIME: How Should Progression and Leveling Work?Thats it. S4 Episode #57: The Healer Class – Restoration, Resilience & the Power to Rise Again

In today’s episode we explore the often-underestimated role of the Healer—more than just a support class, Healers in The Hero Within are the pulse of survival and the spirit of the party. From battlefield medics and potion-wielding alchemists to divine restorers and shield-summoning protectors, this episode dives deep into what makes healing strategic, meaningful, and heroic. Whether you're into buffs, battlefield control, or saving the rogue for the tenth time in a row, this one's for you.Key Takeaways from this Episode🌿 Healers Aren’t Just Support—They’re the Soul of SurvivalIn The Hero Within, Healers aren't just the medic in the background. They’re the ones who change the outcome—not by brute force, but by keeping hope alive when all else fails.Healers are champions of resilience, restoration, and holding the line when everyone else is falling.🩹 From Medic to Miracle WorkerThe Healer class evolves through three powerful stages:Medic – Field-ready, steady hands. Bandages, potions, and basic spells that keep the team upright.Restorer – Shields, AoE healing, and buffs that prevent damage before it happens.Cleric – A legendary lifebringer capable of reversing fate, summoning divine aid, or turning the tide of an entire battlefield. This is the class that grows in both power and purpose.💫 Diverse Healing Styles = Strategic PlayNot all healing looks the same. You can specialize in:✨ Divine Restoration – Holy magic and spiritual energy🧪 Alchemical Healing – Potions, tinctures, and science-backed recovery💫 Vital Transfer – Sacrifice your own life force to heal others🛡️ Prevention – Shields, barriers, and mitigating damage before it startsThe real power? Blending styles to match the party’s needs.🔧 Healing Should Be Strategic, Not SpammyTo make healing meaningful (and fun), it needs smart limits:📉 Resource Management – Energy, mana, supplies⏱️ Cooldowns – Your strongest heals need timing🔥 Overhealing Risks – Go too far and magic may burn out, backfire, or destabilizeWhen done right, healing becomes its own combat dance—balancing risk, timing, and intuition.⚔️ Beyond the Heal: Should Healers Fight? This class isn’t defenseless. Good Healers may:Buff alliesDebuff enemiesControl the battlefield with wards or zonesProtect themselves when the rogue forgets to peel the assassin off their back (again)In short: support doesn’t mean passive.💬 Community Questions – Help Shape the Class!Should Healers stick to healing, or gain offense and utility powers? What healing systems from other games do you love—or hate? What kind of support abilities make YOU excited to play a non-damage role?🛠️ Join the conversation at LifeOfFiction.comBecause being a healer isn’t about numbers—it’s about meaning.NEXT TIME: The Wayfarer Class – Survival, Story, and the Spirit of the JourneyThats it. S4 Episode #55: The Tinkerer Class – Imagination Meets Innovation

In The Hero Within, not every hero charges into battle or channels the arcane. Some heroes build their advantage.Tinkerers are the architects of the impossible.Where others see obstacles, they see… opportunity. Gears, wires, fuel cells, alchemical canisters—whatever it takes. We’ve designed the Tinkerer as a three-stage class that grows from scrappy inventors into world-changing creators. In this explosive (sometimes literally) episode of Life of Fiction – the Podcast, we break down the class where creativity is the weapon. If you’ve ever dreamed of building gadgets, mixing science with sorcery, or solving problems with gears instead of swords—this one’s for you. Here's what we cover:🛠️ Class Progression – From scrappy Inventor to world-shaping Artificer, we explore how Tinkerers evolve in The Hero Within.🤖 Gadget Design & Combat Tricks – Mechanical companions, rune-blasters, teleport nodes, and more—because why fight fair?🔬 Tech vs. Magic – Should Tinkerers stay grounded in science… or embrace alchemy and arcane fuel sources?⚖️ Balance & Limitations – How to keep inventors powerful, but not overpowered. Every cast is a choice with weight.🔹 Specialization vs. Spell SoupMägo players might choose distinct paths like:🔥 Elementalists🎭 Illusionists☠️ Necromancers🌀 ArcanistsBut what if you could blend styles?Hybrid builds create opportunity for wild combinations—like a fire mage who bends time or a necromancer masked in illusions.Creativity becomes the true spellbook.🔹 Scholar vs. InstinctNot all Mägo learn from books. Some feel magic. They’re often the heart of the group, the strategist, and the one who stands when others falter. In The Hero Within, warriors are elevated beyond the “hack-and-slash” trope to embody purpose, personal discipline, and moral backbone.🔹 Strength: Brawn or Backbone?Strength isn't just physical. It’s the choice to keep going, even when you're scared or alone. The question raised: Is the truest strength having the power to crush your enemies—or choosing not to?🔹 Warrior Archetypes ReimaginedWarriors in this system are built to be versatile:Tank? Sure.Leader? Often.Moral compass? Surprisingly… yes. This class rewards players who think tactically, not just tactically violent.🔹 Narrative Depth > Stat BlockRather than focusing solely on hit points and weapon proficiencies, the episode encourages storytellers to explore why the warrior fights. Is it honor? Revenge? Welcome to Life of Fiction, where we don’t just tell stories—we build them together. Today, we’re diving deep into skills, customization, and progression in The Hero Within.Unlike static RPGs where classes dictate every move, The Hero Within puts skill progression in your hands. The real question is—how should those hands shape your journey?Key Takeaways from this Episode🔹 Hero Progression: Class vs. ChoiceAre heroes defined by their class, or by the choices they make along the way?The Hero Within aims to put skill progression in the hands of the player. The goal: make RPGs exciting for new players while rewarding veteran creativity.🔹 Skill Tree – Structured vs. Freeform?Structured Paths: Clear upgrades, balance, and clarity.Open-Ended Paths: Mix-and-match abilities for hybrid builds.Debate: Should progression be a winding road or have clear signposts?🔹 Skill Unlocking – XP or Story-Based?XP-Based: Traditional system—earn points, buy skills.Story-Based (Trials): Unlock abilities through challenges and roleplay (e.g., a warrior must defeat a legendary foe).Hybrid System? Core skills via XP, elite techniques via story.🔹 Balancing Power – Should There Be Limits?Skill Caps Per Stage: Forces strategic choices.Class-Locked Abilities: Maintains unique class roles.Mastery Trade-Offs: Mastering one path locks another.Community Questions – Help Shape the Game!Should skill trees be structured or allow full hybrid customization?Should skills be unlocked through XP, story progression, or both?Should power be limited by class and caps, or should players have full freedom?🛠️ Join the Conversation at LifeOfFiction.com and help build a system worthy of the heroes who play it!Drop your thoughts in the comments! S3 Episode #42: Innovation Through Limitation

In this episode I’m inviting you to rethink how we approach constraints. Often, we see limitations as obstacles, but what if they were the very thing that fuels our best work? I’ll walk you through some powerful historical examples, like how Hemingway crafted his minimalist writing style, how Picasso’s Blue Period came to life during his financial struggles, and even how the Apollo 13 mission’s survival depended on innovation under extreme limitations.I’ll also share stories of modern creators—like filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who made a groundbreaking movie on a shoestring budget, and Billie Eilish, who turned her home recording into chart-topping music—all proving that limitations can be the spark we need to create something extraordinary. This episode is for anyone who’s ever felt like they don’t have the right tools, resources, or opportunities. I’m here to show you that those very limitations might be what unlocks your greatest creative potential. I’ll share personal insights, practical examples, and a fun challenge to help you turn constraints into creative fuel.Visit LifeOfFiction.com to subscribe and access exclusive content! Thanks for listening to the podcast. S3 Episode #33: Worldbuilding and an interview with the Lord of Monsters.

Every fictional story requires worldbuilding. What makes children so amazing, is their imagination is not crippled by limitations of reality or logic. One of the most enjoyable aspects of worldbuilding in my own home is spending time with my creative children. They get a good measure of that from both myself and my wife, and it’s fun to see it come out in different ways.Today I wanted to share a conversation I had with the Lord of Monsters, my 9 year old son, Roman. He shares his thoughts and creations we are considering for the new serial adventure on LifeOfFiction.com called The Underlings. S2 Episode #29: Setting Up Your Own Independent Sales Strategy, Outside Amazon.

You have to look past the selling platforms to connect with your readers. Today I’m going to provide you with a template to do just that.Make sure you go to Life of Fiction and take advantage of the links provided for this episode:https://www.lifeoffiction.com/p/s2-e29-your-sales-strategy-outside-amazonIn today’s episode,  we will go over how I interact with readers, and why. If you want to exist outside the ‘norm’ of Amazon, there’s a mindset authors need to make for selling stories.• Use the tools / platforms available (free is best / 1st option).• If you don’t own the tools and/or platforms, they can change or vanish.• Continue to build an independent system of ‘plug & play’.• Make sure to build direct connections with readers.• Teach readers, over time, how to find you…incase others get in the way.You cannot guarantee success, but you can increase the chances of success by strategically planted ‘seeds’.If YOU have questions, comments or suggestions, you can send them to [email protected] and we will answer them for you on the podcast.Come to LifeOfFiction.com and become one of our free subscribers. There is no guarantee of success. No one can promise you that, and if they do…they’re just after your money. There is, however, something you can do to give yourself an ‘unfair advantage’…Plant seeds. In today’s episode, we go over the mind shift and perspective to take advantage of tools and resources that far too many authors ignore. S2 Episode #23: BONUS - Höbin Get's Trapped With Finley (interview)

I wanted to make sure I shared this terrifying tidbit I gleaned from my adventure of doing that interview with Finley... Apparently he has been prepping and working on solutions for this species, developing a containment suit and some forms of decontamination--because the kingdoms are going to send adventurers INTO the Dragon's Chasm. ...on PURPOSE. For those too young to remember, every fourteen years is the The Race of Seven Sons--a tribute to the original sons of Arödrin. This race, which is some serious competition, grants the winning kingdom a 'favor' from the losers, which has been prized for centuries. Problem here, is that the races are always tough as hell, and nasty. Finley tells me that the race this coming winter will be IN the Dragon's Chasm...and is one of the reasons he's been striving for a solution with this damnable fungus. S2 Episode #19: Advanced Worldbuilding with Simon

Every fictional story requires some form of worldbuilding. So why not become exceptionally GOOD at it?When I started writing stories in the Wanted Hero universe, I had a hope that someday, my kids would want to assist me in building this fictional world. That together, our talents and imaginations would create something to truly entertain those around us. When Simon took an interest in these stories, and wanted to know more about how the world worked…we started worldbuilding together. In today’s episode, Simon and I talk shop and let you listen in on the process we use, what we consider as writers, the important questions to ask…and the journals we use to keep it all organized. In fact, here’s a list of the books created specifically to build Wanted Hero, that we now share with writers around the world:Advanced Worldbuilding page [from WantedHero.com - links to everything]Advanced Worldbuilding a Creative Guide (the manual for FAST worldbuilding)Advanced Worldbuilding Journal [400 page paperback - for all subjects]Advanced Worldbuilding Events Journal [400 page paperback]Advanced Worldbuilding Character Journal [400 page paperback]Advanced Worldbuilding Animals Journal [400 page paperback]Let us know what you thought of the podcast, or if you have any questions, make sure to leave them in the comments. S2 Episode #17: BONUS - Two Reader Questions, Fun Wanted Hero History & Intrinsic Value

Did you know Wanted Hero was funded by a single pull of a slot machine? 100% True.Did you know that you’re important, just because you exist? Also 100% True. What do they have in common? Not a thing. In this BONUS LoF podcast, I get the chance to answer two similar questions from readers on the other side of the planet. Such good questions, in fact, that I felt it important enough to craft a podcast to address them in detail. Thanks for Listening. Episode #16: The End. What I've Learned, What Will Change, & What To Look Forward To!

One of the ways I know it’s likely I’m on the right course, is if everything tries to stop me. That’s when I have to smile…even at 4:35am.In this episode I go over what I’ve learned over the last 22 weeks. Writing, podcasting, and utilizing the tools and platforms I have access to, specifically Substack. Things that I like and things I don’t like, allowing me to discover what the next steps are in this evolving Life of Fiction experiment. A great deal has been accomplished, and that includes two publications you might not be aware of. The first, of course, is Höbin Luckyfeller’s DEMONI VANKIL. If you’re interested in the digital version (I have a version for every eReader), you can get that directly from me, HERE. If you want the printed version, you can use THIS LINK (it’s an affiliate link to Amazon, just FYI).The second, less known publication is the Wanted Hero Collector’s Edition…the complete black and white comic books from 2005 to 2006. That 378 pages of comics, which you get in print for the first time in 17 years! When you’re done listening, make sure to visit Life of Fiction and sign up for the weekly newsletter if you haven’t already. Thanks for Listening, and Remember: You are MORE than you THINK you are! Episode #15: What is your favorite fictional world?

Wanted Hero was originally designed to be expandable — to have a creative world without limits — a place to connect ideas for stories and give them a home.As a reader myself, I was always interested in both the ‘end’ goals and the ‘creative’ goals of authors. What did they want me to feel, think, and what kind of experience did they want to leave with me when the story was over?I’m going to share those reasons, as an author myself, with you in this episode.Make sure to sign up for my weekly newsletter at https://LifeofFiction.com and this newsletter, and the weekly articles I share will be delivered directly to your inbox. Thanks for Listening, and Remember: You are MORE than you THINK you are! Episode #14: Why Do We LOVE Fiction So Much?

When I noticed how fiction made me feel — I watched how it made others feel.Whether you enjoy fantasy, science fiction, mysteries, thrillers, or a good love story, I believe there are roughly 10 reasons we all love fiction that overlap. I’m going to share those reasons with you in this episode.Make sure to sign up for my weekly newsletter at https://LifeofFiction.com and this newsletter, and the weekly articles i share will be delivered directly to your inbox. Thanks for Listening, and Remember: You are MORE than you THINK you are! Episode #13: Finding Clarity By Getting Out Of Your Own Head

One thing I’ve learned about podcasting over the years, and I’m terrible at it, is clarity. At first, I thought it was the problem of consistency. But that’s not it. Whenever I have the time, or made the time, and I have material, there was no problem with me being consistent. It didn’t matter if I had to get up at 2 AM or stay up till 2 AM. It didn’t matter. I would get it done. The problem has always been about getting to a certain point in my progress, and then I wonder about the message I’m trying to convey. I get overly concerned about what you, the listener, are getting from me. Now you could say, “Jamie, that’s a good thing! You’re concerned about what the message is! You’re concerned about me, as the listener, as the reader.” But that’s not what I mean by the “real,” problem. What I’m doing is second-guessing what I’m trying to say. This episode was the process of how I solved that...Become a FREE subscriber on Life of Fiction. https://lifeoffiction.comHey, if you like this episode, leave a review. Episode #12: Marketing, Traditional Methods Don't Work, And Why In-Yer-Facebook Can Go Punt

If I decided to walk away from it all, would you follow me? I’m talking about social media. The bane of my existence. I said ‘cya’ on Facebook today, and it made me smile.Thing is, no matter what I do, how hard I try or work, I have never achieved even a fraction of the results I see posted by other indie authors. Even when I buy their books, courses, and religiously mimic what they teach. The results I get, each and every time, bring me to one of three conclusions:• I suck as a student and MUST be doing things wrong, or;• These so called ‘gurus’ selling the courses suck as teachers, or;• The people selling the courses I’m buying are just full of s**t.Could it be all three? Maybe. But that’s my starting point today on this episode of Life of Fiction. It’s a great day…I’m happy…and I hope you have a fantastic weekend! This is a public episode.
