Week 5 Picks (All NFL Games)

Hello Lions fans, Detroit Lions fans, and NFL fans. I'm Paul Mather. This is the Lions 360 podcast. In this episode, I'll be going around the league and making my picks for Week Five. Looking at the schedule, there are some fantastic NFL games coming up this weekend, including the first NFL London game of the season. We'll get into that in a second. I hope you've had a good week and are enjoying the fact that the Lions are 3-1. But for now, let's focus on the rest of the league. Tonight, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Atlanta Falcons. The 3-1 Buccaneers face the 2-2 Falcons. I'm going to pick the Falcons in this game because they just came off a good win against the Saints and are playing at home. I know my friend Mark Reely won't agree with me on this one, but I'm going with the Falcons. On Sunday afternoon, we have the Jets traveling to the Vikings, but they'll actually be playing in London. The Minnesota Vikings, one of the league's top teams, have given up a home game to play in London. Will this affect them later in the season? Who knows? It's always been a concern of mine. What if a team doesn't make the playoffs because they didn't have home field advantage? Regardless, it's exciting to see the 4-0 Vikings play the 2-2 Jets. I'm going to pick the Vikings. They've had a strong start. I'll say the Vikings by 10 because the Jets haven't been playing well. The Jets have Aaron Rodgers, who is playing against one of his old divisional foes, the Vikings. I'll give the Vikings the edge in that one. Next, we have the Carolina Panthers, 1 and 3, traveling to the Chicago Bears at 2 and 2. I'll pick the Bears in this game. The Bears have been stronger, have more wins, and are at home. The Panthers struggled last week with Andy Dalton as their quarterback. Then we have the Ravens traveling to the Bengals. The Baltimore Ravens are 2 and 2, traveling to the Cincinnati Bengals at 1 and 3. I'm going to pick the Ravens on the road. The Ravens had a good win last week against the Bills, and Derrick Henry, their running back, really got the motor running. This could be a tough time for the Bengals because if they go 1 and 4, it's not what they were expecting. They're in a tough division with the Ravens and Steelers. It could be challenging times for the Bengals. Next, we have the Miami Dolphins traveling to the New England Patriots. Both teams are 1 and 3. The Dolphins haven't been doing well since their QB, Tua, went on the Concussion Protocol. I'll pick the Patriots in that one. Then we have the Cleveland Browns traveling to the Washington Commanders. Browns 1 and 3, Commanders 3 and 1. I'll pick the Commanders to win that game. Their QB, Jaden Daniels, has been playing really well. Next, we have the Indianapolis Colts traveling to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Colts 2 and 2, Jaguars 0 and 4. I'll go with a road win for the Colts. We've got another cracking game at 1 o'clock Eastern time, which is 6 o'clock UK time. The Buffalo Bills at 3 and 1 travel to the Houston Texans at 3 and 1. The Texans have won all their games except for a loss to the Vikings. The Bills have won all their games except for a loss to the Ravens. This is a great game. I'm going to pick the Bills because I think Josh Allen is playing too well. It'll be close, but I'll go with the Bills by three. Falcons vs. Buccaneers: Falcons win Vikings vs. Jets: Vikings win by 10 points Bears vs. Panthers: Bears win Ravens vs. Bengals: Ravens win Patriots vs. Dolphins: Patriots win Commanders vs. Browns: Commanders win Colts vs. Jaguars: Colts win Bills vs. Texans: Bills win by 3 points Broncos vs. Raiders: Broncos win 49ers vs. Cardinals: 49ers win by 7 points Rams vs. Packers: Rams win Seahawks vs. Giants: Seahawks win by 4 points Steelers vs. Cowboys: Steelers win by 7 points Chiefs vs. Saints: Chiefs win by 3 points

The Lions are not the best team in their division?

bjmather (00:01) Hello ladies and gentlemen, it is a Power Rankings Tuesday. This is the day of the week when the Power Rankings around the league come out. This is Lions 360, my name's Paul. Detroit Lions fan in the UK. So, let's look at where we have got the... People have got the Lions posted in the league after a win. And, Lions 2 and 1. Most rankings have got them high in the league. So, let's start off with Sports Illustrated. Last week they were third, now got them at fourth. The Athletic had them last week at sixth, got them up to third. CBS Sports has got them as low as tenth. Yahoo Sports has got them as high as third last week at fifth. ESPN has got them at fifth. Bleacher Report has got them at fourth. USA Today has got them at fourth, previously at fifth. Okay, now on the official NFL website, their power rankings, they every week rank the entire league. It's quite a fun thing because every week My nerdyism, this is my nerdy moment, this is my nerdy moment, is to check in with what the pundits think about how the Lions are. And it's not a big thing at all. It's not like an important thing because how you go from week to week counts and who they say they are and all that kind of thing. But I like to dream that the Lions can push for a Super Bowl place. at the end of this season. Okay, so I'm going use the NFL power rankings to talk about where the lines are in terms of the division at the moment. So as I said in the intro, have the Vikings at third place. They've bumped them up 12 places this week from 15th to third. So they're counting the Vikings currently as the third best team in the league. with the Lions one game back in fourth place, with the Packers a few more places back in seventh place. Now, the Packers have been doing a really good job. They've been out without their starting QB Jordan Love. They've been playing their backup Malik Willis, but they've managed to get two wins out of it. And so they are performing well. without their number one QB. They have been performing well. So the NFL website, NFL .com has got three of the top seven spots going to the NFC North, which would make the NFC North the top division in the NFL really in terms of strength. Packers are good, strong. The Vikings are strong. We play the Vikings in about three weeks time in our first divisional game. And the other team, trivia question, do you know who the other NFC North team is? It's the Chicago Bears with their rookie QB Caleb Willis. And a lot of pundits had the Bears potentially being in a good spot. But they currently have the Chicago Bears all the way down in... I can't find them. I'm scrolling through. 24th place. So, according to NFL .com, we don't have to worry about the Bears. Sorry to my longtime buddy, Stuie Muir. But this may not be the Bears' year. Again, Jay Cuttee is still his buddy. So there we go. That's just going around the power rankings. Hope you're having a good time. I think we're done here.

Is the NFC North too tough? Week 3 - Lions win over Cardinals and the rest of the NFL recapped

00:00 Lions 20 Cardinals 13 04:14 The rest of Week 3 recapped 09:10 Detroit Lions History: Classic Moment #1 2009 Lions 38 - Browns 37 Hey there Lions fans, welcome to the Lions 360 podcast. My name is Paul. Well done for a victory Monday for the Detroit Lions. I did record a podcast last week after the Lions lost to the Buccaneers. Didn't post it. I might just post that audio up. You could accuse me of being a fair weather fan of just posting a podcast when the Lions do well. So be it. But the Lions win on the road against the Cardinals 20 points to 13. Playing against an LA, sorry, a Cardinals team who the previous week had beaten the LA Rams quite hand -handedly by a bigger score than how we had beaten the Rams. And so this was a good, this was a good road win. Defense played really well. Offense. still could do with doing more but they do enough to win the game. The first quarter started with the Lions and the Cardinals trading a pair of touchdowns each. The Lions scoring with Montgomery on a one yard run up the middle. Arizona reply with a touchdown scoring seven all. lions replied to that with their own touchdown, a pass to St. Brown, traded a few punts. And then what was probably the, play of the game just before halftime to make the score 7 -7 13 -7 to make it 20 -7, 20 points to seven was a hook and ladder. Pass to Amon Rasen Brown who then lateraled it to Jameer Gibbs. A sweet, sweet play if you check that out on YouTube. It's a great, great play that they scored on. Cardinals kick just before the half to make it 20 points to 10. And then the Lions do not score any more points in the second half but do enough to close out the game with a score of 20 points to 13. setting the lines up at 2 and 1. We're going to go through some stat lines, but it was a needed win after earlier in the day. The NFC, the lines, rivals in the division, the Vikings and the Packers, both with good wins. Go through that a little bit more when we go around the league. What's some stat lines for you? Jared Goff doing what needed to be done, including on the final drive to ice the clock out, pass to Omanrass and Brown to gain a first down. But Goff, 199 yards, two TDs and a pick. Running game, David Montgomery and Jamiah Gibbs, both proving that the Lions have great weapons at running backs. offense. Jamison Williams with a quieter game but Amon Ra St Brown leading the way with 75 receiving yards and a touchdown. Kirby Joseph with an interception much needed and the Lions go to 2 -1 with the next game against the Seahawks of Monday night followed by a bye week. Followed by Cowboys. me, by the Cowboys and then after that the Vikings will be the first, yeah, first divisional game that we'll have against the Vikings at the Vikings and as we go around the league I let you know that the Lions do have some real competition in the NFC North. Check you later, that's been the Lions win over the Cardinals. bjmather (04:32) Hello. Okay, so let's go around the league, check out the rest of the week's scores. As well as covering the lines in this podcast, let's go around the league. So the weekend started with Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets getting his first win as a jet over the New England Patriots. The Patriots were just tough in that division for a long, long time. And now it's the Patriots are just the low, low, low level of the NFL at the moment. The New York Giants travel to the Cleveland Browns and won 21 -15. A great game between the Saints and the Eagles. A real great game. The Saints who have impressed the league with a quick 2 -0 start. The Philadelphia Eagles also a strong team. So this was an early season matchup between two strong NFC teams. And it was a great game to watch because the Eagles were had the lead and then the Saints score and saw the penultimate drive. The Eagles returned with their own touchdown to win the game. Really great game, really good game. And then at the Vikings, The Minnesota Vikings are 3 -0. So the big thing is now, we'll find out later, the Packers won without Jordan Love with their backup quarterback. So, initial question, who is the line's toughest opponent in the division? Is it the Vikings or is it the Packers? What do you guys think? me know. But this was big for me because early in the evening to realize... This is a tough Vikings team. have a win against the Texans, a win against the Niners, against good quarterbacks. The Minnesota Vikings with Sam Donald at quarterback, a journeyman who's been around a few teams, but has found a way initially to start playing well. The Vikings look like a tough team for us to play against, and it's going to make those divisional games, our divisional game against the Vikings coming up. And, I'm going to Couple of weeks after that we'll be at the Packers. So they're going to be really big games with Lions coming up. Let's keep going around the league. let's keep going around the league. So we had the Buccaneers with their first loss against Boeniks of the Denver Broncos. Tampa, Tampa of course beating us last week. The Denver defense looks really good. Looks really, really good. The Packers with their backup quarterback Malik Willis with a win over the Titans. Our other divisional opponent, the Chicago Bears, going down to the Colts 21 -16. Steelers winning 20 points to 10 over the Chargers. The Chargers were 2 -0. Steelers are now 3 -0 with Justin Fields at quarterback. The Seahawks win over the Dolphins with the Dolphins QB Tour in Concussion Protocol. The Carolina Panthers get their first win of the season over the Las Vegas Raiders. The Panthers having played with Bryce Young at that quarterback who they drafted last year. He was an upcoming talent. But switching quarterback to the Panthers. Matthew Stafford and the LA Rams get their first win of the season over the San Francisco 49ers. That's an interesting thing for the 49ers because they started the season with a win. They've then lost to the Vikings. They've then lost to the Rams. Interesting. Also in the late games, the Ravens getting a win over the Dallas Cowboys, the Ravens. with their first win of the season. And then on Sunday night, the Kansas City Chiefs winning over the Atlanta Falcons 22 to 17. Monday night football. Tonight we have a great game between the Jags and the Bills. The Jacksonville Jaguars, the Buffalo Bills. The Bills have started off the season strong. People have them high in their power rankings. And also the Commanders. are visiting the Bengals, the Washington Commanders, the Cincinnati Bengals. And that rounds up week three of the NFL season, already three weeks in the books. Lions at two and one. Lots of other teams finding the feet. The Chiefs still strong at three and The Vikings are at three and Let's see what week four will bring. bjmather (09:52) Hello Lions fans, hello podcasters. I'm Paul Mather with Lions 360. Now, I'm a Detroit Lions fan, have been for 30 years -ish. I think it was like 1994 when I first got into the NFL, watched the NFL Blitz TV show on Channel 4 on Saturday mornings. I'd borrowed my friends Madden 92, learned. the rules of American football, started watching the NFL blitz on Saturday mornings. This was pre -internet days. This was when you could watch the highlights of a game on a Saturday morning from the previous week and not know what the score was. This was when the scores would appear in the newspaper a couple of days afterwards. And yeah, a bit of a self -indulgence thing, but... as Lions fan, for some classic moments of being a Lions fan, the kind of moments where the team haven't been good for quite, had tough seasons, and these are the kind of moments where it's just, it's a nerdy thing. It's one you always go back to. So I wanted to start off with going back to 2009 when the The Lions beat the Browns, the Cleveland Browns, in their only their second win of the season. The Lions finished that season two and 14. It was the year after 2008 where the Lions were the first team ever to go 0 and 16. They went a whole NFL season without winning a game. They drafted Matthew Stafford, who would then go on to play for the Lions for seasons up until 2021, who then go to the LA Rams and win a Super Bowl. But in 2009, Matthew Stafford was starting his season with the Lions. They won early on in the season against the Redskins. But this was... I can't now, I'm trying to work out, remember whether this was at Cleveland or at the Lions. I'm not actually sure. But what I want to go through is at the end of the game was a set of moments which were just great to watch and still are great to watch. There's an NFL program called Mic'd Up where they take players, stick a microphone on them, and you get to hear what they're saying as they are playing. Now, this this actual game. known as one of the best Mike Tuck moments that there's ever been. I'll take you through basically the end of the game. Okay, I've gone on about it too much. Let's just get on with it and give you the detail. So, the Lions are down. The Lions are behind 37 -31. It's been a back and forth game, a shootout. The Lions have Brady Quinn at the time at quarterback. The Lions with their rookie overall quarterback, Matthew Stafford. So what happens is, it's the last seconds of the game. Matthew Stafford is rolling out. He tries to throw it downfield. He's rolling around in the pocket. He's rolling around in the pocket. He manages to chuck the ball on a Hail Mary into the end zone when, I'm pretty sure it was Sean Rogers. Sean Rogers from the Browns, a tackle. tackles Stafford plows him into the ground and on the mic's up you can hear Stafford wince in pain the ball goes into the end zone now what happens in the end zone is there's defensive pass interference which means that which means that the cornerback is bumped into the receiver so there's a flag on the play the game's not over and this is how this is while second the seconds of the game finish Stafford gets driven into the ground, his shoulder separates. He can barely feel anything. People rush over to get him. You can hear him shouting, get off me, get off me, get off me. He goes over to the sideline. Now on the field, the Lions backup QB, Daunty, Pepper comes on, goes into the huddle, starts lining up. Now the Browns... call a timeout. Now because the defense calls a timeout, you're then allowed to sub another player off. Stafford had gone off injured, but because the Browns have called a timeout, he was technically allowed to come back into the game. Now what Stafford does is while he's surrounded by the medics, I just love this moment. I can remember it to this day. He goes over, he hears the timeout and he goes, whoa, that's a timeout. I can go on the field. He rushes up to the coach and says, I can throw the ball if you need me to. I can throw you the ball if you need me to. With his shoulder separated. He lines up on the centre. So Doncy Culpepper comes off the get, comes off. Stafford goes on the game. He throws a one yard pass to Brandon Pettigrew. The Lions tie the game 37 -all and Stafford just shows so much guts to get on the field and make this happen. Stafford comes off, he's still clutching his shoulder, he's still clutching his shoulder. It's 37 -all. Jason Hansen lands up the extra point and the Lions get their second win of the season after going 0 -16. Now at the time... I remember I missed that Lions game, watching it on TV, because I was busy against the Redskins. So this was the first game that I'd seen them win on television after the 0 -16 season. And it was an amazing way to do it. And yeah, I just thought I'd go back through that moment, relive some Lions history. Does anybody remember that game? If you're a Lions fan, let me know. Hope you've enjoyed it guys, and I think we're done here.
