Lure of the Labrador Wild
by Dillon Wallace
The Lure Of The Labrador Wild chronicles the harrowing expedition of adventurer and journalist Leonidas Hubbard as he sets out to navigate the Naskaupi River, Lake Michikamau in Labrador, and the George River in Quebec. Accompanied by his friend Dillon Wallace, a New York lawyer, and George Elson, a Native guide from Missannabie, the trio quickly encounters a series of misfortunes. Instead of the intended route, they mistakenly follow the shallow Susan Brook. After enduring grueling portages and dwindling supplies, they reach a critical point at Windbound Lake on September 15, where they must turn back. On October 18, desperate to find food, Wallace and Elson leave Hubbard behind in a tent. Tragically, Hubbard succumbs to exhaustion and starvation shortly thereafter. Wallace is lost in a snowstorm, while Elson, after a week of navigating the wilderness and crafting a raft, finds help. A search party eventually rescues Wallace, alive, on October 30, 1903.
