    Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion

    https://3speak.tv/watch?v=mes/c3b94a80 In this video, I go over Johannes Kepler's three laws of planetary motion and derive them using Isaac Newton's second law of motion, F = m a, and his law on universal gravitation. While observing the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe's astronomical observations, Kepler observed recurring patterns in the data, which he formulated as three laws: A planet revolves around the sun in an elliptical orbit with the sun at one focus. The line joining the sun to a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times. The square of the period of revolution of a planet is proportional to the cube of the length of the major axis of its orbit. Isaac Newton later realized that Kepler's laws are merely the biproduct of his 2nd law of motion and his law on universal gravitation. I use Newton’s laws to derive Kepler's laws, while making extensive use of vector functions, calculus, and the polar equation of an ellipse. Later in the video, I calculate the distance a satellite needs to be from the equator of the Earth to have a geosynchronous orbit, in which the orbit of the satellite around the Earth is in sync with Earth's rotation. This type of orbit is sometimes referred to as the Arthur C. Clarke orbit, named after the famous author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, who popularized the orbit in a fictional novel in 1945. Each magnet is placed on a polished low friction glass mirror surface, and the football shape allows the magnets to freely rotate. Moving the strong magnet attached to the drill laterally easily moves the magnets, but rotating it barely even nudges the smaller magnets. In this case, we obtain a convergent series — otherwise, if there is no finite sum, then the series is called divergent. A partial sum is the sum of a specific number of terms of a series. The normal acceleration increases by a factor of velocity squared so that doubling the velocity multiplies the normal acceleration by 4 when along a curved path. The unit normal vector is defined as the ratio of the tangent vector (derivative of the position vector) with its magnitude; hence, the length will be 1. Likewise, the unit normal vector is the derivative of the unit tangent vector divided by its magnitude. I use the equation for the curvature and derivative of velocity to obtain the acceleration in terms of the unit tangent and unit normal vectors. These components outline how much acceleration an object experiences in the direction of its current motion (tangent) and how much in the direction perpendicular to its motion (normal).     Example 3: Integrating Acceleration and Velocity Vectors to get the Position Vector

This follows from my earlier videos on derivatives and integrals of vector functions by their components. I illustrate this with an example and show that the integration constants can be solved by plugging in the initial time variable, in our case t = 0. Thus, the velocity vector is the initial velocity plus the definite integral of the acceleration, while the position vector is the initial position plus the definite integral of the velocity.     Motion in Space: Velocity and Acceleration

    https://3speak.tv/watch?v=mes/e443f9d3 In this video, I go over further into vector functions, and this time look at motion in space in terms of the velocity, acceleration, and position of objects moving in 2D or 3D space. Using the fact that the rate of change of the position of an object is the velocity, and likewise that the rate of change of velocity is the acceleration, I show we can write the velocity and acceleration of an object just in terms of the derivatives of the position vector. Likewise, going backwards via vector integrals, we can obtain the velocity from the acceleration vector, and the position from the velocity vector. I also do an example on centripetal force, which is derived from Isaac Newton's 2nd law of motion, F = m⋅a, and arises for circular motion. The real spherical harmonics are what are typically plotted when graphing atomic orbitals or magnetic fields, since they are easier to visualize in 3D and still inherit the important properties of complex spherical harmonics. They are referred to as "solid" because they include the radial term as well. I use separation of variables to define a function that is a multiple of 3 separated functions, and then selected separation constants to obtain a periodic, repeating solution. I solve the function corresponding to the azimuthal angle ɸ via the derivative of an exponential function. The function containing the radial r term is the Euler-Cauchy equation, and I solve it via substitution. The middle function is the associated Legendre equation, whose solution is beyond the scope of this video, so I just plugged in the corresponding function.
