Chapter 15: The Rendezvous
In a courthouse in sweltering downtown Memphis, the charming and dapper Lee Filderman is leading the defense team. Memphis's own F. Lee Bailey makes hearts flutter and women swoon as he delivers his opening statements. It's up to the young, and untried Carrie Bryant to take on the legal mastermind. The tiny little dynamo heads the Prosecutor's team as The State of Tennessee versus Hunter Lee Baron III presents their opening arguments. No one could argue that Lee Filderman failed to make a spectacular entrance - or exit - under Judge Chris Craft's watchful eye, with CNN, Harvey Levin, Nancy Grace and the rest of the nation glued to their seats. It's the biggest trial to hit Memphis since the Alice Mitchell trial for the brutal slaying of Freda Ward, in 1892... Want to follow along with our narrator? The former home of Elvis Presley is now open for tours and is part of a large entertainment park dedicated to Elvis Presley. However, there is also a dark side to the King's former estate. While Priscilla, his ex-wife was specifically written out of his will after a fairly contentious court case over spousal support, Elvis' dad Vernon enlisted her aid at the end of his life. She, along with her advisors came in and stripped out many of Elvis' red and white decor from the 1974 re-model to transform Graceland back to an earlier era, that she deemed more tasteful. Don't worry dear visitors, there is still plenty of kitsch 70's style, and "poor boy rich" flavor. Following the death of Elvis's troubled only child, Lisa Marie Presley in 2023, his ex-wife, Priscilla went to great lengths to wrestle control of the mansion away from her own granddaughter, Riley Keough. After Lisa Marie sold away much of the Elvis memorabilia and licensing rights - the mansion is the largest part of the Elvis estate that remains intact. Priscilla also fought for (in court) and won the right to be buried at Graceland in the family cemetary, which was considered ironic given that she has spent the last 50 years capitalizing on her ex-husband's fame with barely disguised disdain, including a recent film that suggests that the King of Rock n' Roll was a child molester who took advantage of a young Priscilla and stood in the way of her fame. (There is a great biography by an award winner journalist, Suzanne Finstead that suggests otherwise.) Chapter Ten: Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ

Read our chapter notes for more information about the famous people and places in our Bluff city on the banks of the Mississippi. Chapter Notes Marnie went through a lot in this chapter, but we won't focus on the heavy stuff. Instead we'll go right to the best of Memphis. Memphis is synonymous with Blues and BBQ. But an eternal debate rages; where is the best BBQ in the city? Marnie Gellhorn weighs in on her favorites including Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ. Marnie's Memphis Barbecue picks: 1. Jim Neely's Interstate Barbecue - this one wins, hands down, every darn time. For the delicious, fall-off-the-bone tender Ribs, of course - as well as the reasonable prices. But it's not just the food, it's the history, tradition and Jim Neely himself that make the food so special. Action 5 News has done a nice story on Jim Neely. 2. Blues City Cafe - Nothing on Beale Street should be so delicious, but surprisingly, there are several excellent restaurants within this two block tourist trap. As always, it's the ribs, ribs, ribs. But then again, what pulled pork sandwich could ever hold a candle to a rack of ribs? 3. One & Only BBQ - this is a great place, especially if you are hanging around East Memphis.. 4. B. B. King's Blues Club - the food shouldn't be so good here, but it is! I like to sit at the Gales table, which is decorated with the likenesses of the Gales brothers. 5. Elwood's Shack outside the Lowe's in East Memphis. We've also collected a selection of articles and links to help barbeque enthusiastics make their way thru the many, many delicious, finger-licking locations in Memphis, Tennessee. "7 Must-Visit BBQ Joints In Memphis," Moss, Robert for Southern Living magazine, July 2023. We can't agree with all of our picks, but the world-famous and classic Charlie Vergos Rendevous is a "must eat", in our opinion. The Tasting Table lists their choices for the 10 best BBQ restaurants in Memphis in this 2022 article by Amy Bizzarri. Passports & Grub shares many of the above listed favorites, with a couple more thrown in, "16 Absolute Must-Try Barbecue Restaurants In Memphis." Chapter Notes: Memphis - the city of music Best live music venues - LaFayette's Music Room. LaFayette's profile as featured on Memphis Travel. Located in mid-town Memphis, LaFayette's is surrounded by chic bars and restaurants in the hipster part of town. For a more low profile occasion, head to Neil's Music Room in East Memphis. Unfortunately, Neil was recently arrested on tax charges, but hopefully this is resolved quickly - and he's back at the helm. If you are feeling up for a trip to the famous, and always lively Beale Street - there are a flurry of favorites. The original B.B. Kings, which hosts plenty of well-known artists - as a rite of passage, almost. The Band Box is the closest thing to an authentic "juke joint" on Beale Street and is attached to the Blues City Cafe, which serves several southern favorites. You can head over to Jerry Lee Lewis's farther down the street. Jerry's no longer there, but that's probably a good thing. His appearances in the last few years were marked by drunken arguments and tantrums. If you have the chance, plan ahead to attend Memphis in May's Beale Street Music festival. It's three days, hundreds of musical acts - multiple stages, and (even!) a Blues tent. But, out-of-towners beware, the festival is also known as "Memphis in Mud" due to the region's frequent spring showers.

Chapter Notes: Temple Israel - Memphis This progressive synagogue has been an important ally to many in the Memphis community starting with Rabbi Bill Fineshriber, in 1915. He was an outspoken supporter of women's suffrage and equal rights for African Americans and encouraged his parishioners to do the same. This was also exemplified by the dynamic and well-known Rabbi Wax, who led the synagogue from 1954 to 1978. He was a civil rights activist and encouraged Temple members to participate in pursuing racial integration. Rabbi Wax was also instrumental in giving the Memphis sanitation workers a chance to be heard after the January 31st incident that resulted in the death of two African American city workers. His role in mediating the sanitation worker's strike as a leading member of the Memphis Ministers Association was more mixed, with Rabbi Wax telling his congregants that "This city shall witness a new spirit and the memory of this great prophet of our time shall be honored. There will be bigots and segregationists and the so-called respectable but unrighteous people who will resist. But in the scheme of history, God's will does prevail." ABOUT THIS SHOW
This is a multi-generational tale of a political family in the mid-south; with all the steamy details that emerge after a crime that shocks the Bluff city. In the aftermath of this grisly murder, Memphians are scandalized by the gruesome details that emerge, and all the national attention it attracts. At the center, is the eccentric, egocentric charmer, socialite and Instagram aficionado, Hunter Baron III. Follow along chapter by chapter, with native Memphian and narrator, Zeporia Gray of R. M. P. Studios. #MurderinMemphis #Deathofasocialite #MurderScandals #HighSociety #Memphis #Crime
