At the NOLI film festival 2025

It was my pleasure to attend the NOLI Festival on October the 12th 2025 at the Et Cetera Theatre in Camden, London. Here are some reflections from Billy Stanton (friend of the podcast and one of the organisers), a few short interviews from the night and a quick afterword from me. NOLI is providing a home for films that might be too intense, too strange, too home-made, too long, too short... for other festivals. It was a wonderful night with kindred spirits and an excellent programme. If you care about film as a living art form festivals like NOLI are a must have and, in that spirit, I would be extra grateful if you could share this episode far and wide.If you get the chance to attend next time, it would be great to see you there. 'In the White City'- What does Bruno Ganz want?- with Sheridan and Billy

This is the final (for now?) episode in the Decades mini series. Sheridan, Billy and myself find ourselves in the 1980s and watching Alain Tanner's 'In the White City', wondering 'What does Bruno Gantz want?' A question we should all ask ourselves regularly. This episode is brough to you in part by the NOLI film festival. This is Billy's festival and it will take place this year on October the 12th at the Et Cetera theatre in Camden. It is open for submissions here:https://filmfreeway.com/NoliTheTooLongTooDifficultTooRawShortFilmFestivalA little about the festival:Making its fourth appearance on 12th October 2025 and again at our beautiful home at Etcetera Theatre in Camden, London, Noli is the festival for short films too experimental, too daring, too real or simply too long for the mainstream circuit. Our third edition was our most successful yet and continued our mission of building a network of like-minded artists and collaborators across London and beyond. Our fourth edition promises to be even more special as our name spreads further both at home and abroad- this is your chance to be part of something that matters. We are looking to champion a British New Wave of filmmaking, from narrative to essay to experimental films that have a unique perspective on cinema and on modern life. We love pieces that eschew traditional, commercial narratives in favour of a bold vision, innovative techniques, and a clear aim in perspective & idea on the world through art.Art needs to reclaim its lost sense of verve, daring to push the held conventions of current cinema and society to usher in a new wave of creation and reflection. The medium is currently stagnant and we want to be the change we wish to see by bringing art back to its grass-roots approach, jumpstarting an unshackled form of cinema that is once again subversive, in the name of entertaining avant-garde fables, piercing essay films, innovative and exciting animations or art pieces, or honest and well-crafted narratives. We want to reflect the new, in a way that is authentically inclusive of fringe artists that are truly contributing to the medium but feel like they have no home, whether you've frequented the institutional channels like BFI, or are indie through-and-through.As such, we are looking for realised FILMS.I think some of the listeners may have films that might fit and it's a chance to see films by Sheridan, Billy and me all in one place. Wake in Fright- Decades 2- The 1970s

Welcome to the Yabba, you'll have a drink...Billy and Sheridan return for a discussion of the 1970s kicked off with 'Wake in Fright'. Nearly lost, it is now a classic of 'Ozploitation'. We discuss the transition from the political and social optimism of the 60s to the chaos and nihilism of the 70s, the definitions of 'horror' and 'auteur', the insecurity and cruelty of the decade, punk, alcohol, toxic masculinity and much more.I hope you enjoy it. Francis -Faoladh

For a long time I have intended to make a film, this film, Francis, based on my feelings in relation to George Romero’s Martin. Martin is a vampire movie without a vampire but with a deep and deeply disquieting examination of religion, sex and culture. I loved Martin at first sight and instantly thought (felt) that the idea would make something wonderful about being Irish - and also a great werewolf movie. This is my version of that film. I spent a long time thinking I just would never have the resources to make it, except as a short story and that is indeed how it started, until I suddenly had the idea ‘Why not La Jetée the thing?’ I am not sure if ‘to La Jetée’ will catch on as a verb in English but let’s give it a try. It was made for basically nothing and I want those limitations to be part of the atmosphere – how else to capture that strange and intoxicating feeling of 70’s and 80’s exploitation cinema. It is the story of a young man who has a miserable life, a violent early death, and seems to be having at least as bad a time of it in the afterlife. But in the answer to the question of why this is all so horrible there is possibly something beautiful and rather life affirming…but you’ll need to dig that out for yourself.   https://youtu.be/jmK6ryxsHOo

Scala!!! – Magic and Joy at the World’s Weirdest Cinema…With Jane Giles and Ali Catterall.

New Year and the first episode of 2024 and of Series 2. It’s a weird and wonderful, inspired and insane start to things. In this episode I interview Jane Giles and Ali Catterall, co-directors of the new documentary: ‘Scala!!!…or the incredibly strange rise and fall on of the world’s wildest cinema and how it influenced a mixed-up generation of weirdos and misfits.’ From 1978 to 1993 the Scala, in its various incarnations, was a hub of artistic and social energy and creativity and its story is inspiring as well as moving. That story is beautifully told in this unique film. It also features original music by Mr. Barry Adamson. Jane and Ali were fascinating people to talk to and the film is a joyful education. SCALA!!! is in cinemas now and available on BFI Player and BFI Blu-ray from 22 January. A season of the Scala’s greatest hits, Scala: Sex, drugs and rock and roll cinema, runs at BFI Southbank throughout January with selected films on BFI Player. Scala: Sex, drugs and rock and roll cinema Thanks to Ali and Jane for being so generous with their time and to Jill at the BFI and Shaun at Central Control for all the help getting this together.
