Each episode of NB Reflects is a sample of a Reflections recording. Reflections is a vast collection of oral histories recorded and stored at the Sophienburg Museum and Archives in New Braunfels, Tx.

    S3 #9- "the one treaty"

    S3 episode #9- This episode comes from pieces of Reflections #0326 where C. Herb Skoog interviews Rev. C. J. Freudenberg on 7/27/1983. The Reverend had written a thesis in 1947 at Trinity University in San Antonio, Tx and he discusses parts of that thesis relating to Native Americans and the Meusebach treaty. This episode touches on several things noted in this year's winner of the Myra Lee Adams Goff Sophienburg Award. This award is given every year to an essay author about the history of the area. This year's winner is Jaelynn Davidson. I am calling this episode-"the one treaty."

    S3#8-In this episode C. Herb Skoog interviews Pearl Playdell Bouverie from Reflections #314 on 3/17/1983. Pearl Bouverie ("Lady Pearl") was born in London, England and lived a version similar to the TV show "Downton Abbey.": The thumbnail is from her home Palace House at Beaulieu near Soouthampton. It is open to the public and you can visit it. She started coming to Texas in 1955 and did so repeatedly for almost 30 years. She considered Texas her second home. I am informally calling this one "one copes, you know, one grows with it."

    Season 3 episode #7-This podcast on the "free thinkers/frei denker" comes from Reflections #2 with Valeska Startz on 12/19/76, from Reflections #22 with Martha Borne on 02/24/77 and from Reflections #43 with Sida Streuer on 08/03/77. All three were interviewed by C. Herb Skoog with Fred Oheim. I am informally calling this one: "A metaphor for a podcast"

    S3 episode #6-This episode explores the Eiband and Fischer store fire as several people reflect on the event. 6 different Reflections were used to put this episode together.     Season 3 #5 "Schuetzen Verein"

    S3#5-In this episode C. Herb Skoog interviews Donald Rahe, Kermit Greebon, and August Schulze on 9/30/1982 from Reflections #294. They discuss the "Schuetzen Verein" that was established in 1849 here in New Braunfels, Tx.the thumbnail picture, I believe, is a very old flag sew for the Schuetzen Verein.Reflections #294 contains another 30+ minutes about the Schuetzen Verein.

    Season 3 episode 4- We are continuing our celebration of Black History month. This episode comes from Reflections #313 where C. Herb Skoog interviews Lucille Garcia on 03/10/1983. She talks quite a bit about the integration of New Braunfels, Tx in the 1960s-70s. The thumbnail includes a picture of Lucille Garcia (on the left).     S3 #3- This episode celebrates Black History Month. Eddie Millette and Mary Millette Johnson are interviewed by C; Herb Skoog on 2/2/2984 for Reflections #347. They relate their family history coming out of slavery, making their way to Tx and other stories from the early 20th century. I am informally calling this one:; "eating meat on a meatless day with a suspicious plane circling overhead."

    S3 episode #2- In this episode Leon Lacshowb describes his time as a pilot for "Air America" in Reflections #0542 with host C. Herb Skoob on 1/24/1989. Feel free to watch the movie Air America with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr and compare his stories to the movie. I am informally calling this one, "working for Pig Pen and Silver Fox."

    Season 2 episode #24- The season 2 finale, holiday episode. The podcast comes from Reflections #298 where C.. Herb Skoog interviews Myra Lee and Stewart Fischer on 10/22/82. They discuss their Christmas traditions growing up in New Braunfels. Their stories mirror many other families stories about Christmas in Comal County. I am informally naming this one "all I want for Christmas is a baton."

    Season 2 Episode #23- This episode relates methods to play the fairly unique game of 9-pin bowling that came to Comal county and survived all the way up to the present day. From Reflections #365, Moe Schwab describes the game of 9-pin bowling to C. Herb Skoog on 7/24/84. I am informally calling this one "watch out for the 9-pin disease."

    Season 2 #22- Weihnachtsmarkt origins

    S2 episode #22- Origins of Weihnachtsmarkt in New Braunfels. Janelle Berger, Anna Lee Hicks, Bette Spain and Jean Sacco were interviewed by C. Herb Skoog on 8/22/2013 for Reflections #2153. They describe the origins and early years of the Weihnachtsmarkt in New Braunfels. They also talk about how they got involved with the market and the museum. Produced in the Erben Family Memorial Sound Room at the Sophienburg Museum and Archives.

    S2 #21- This episode contains some interesting stories about Wurstfest from about 20 years ago. Several past presidents of Wurstfest, including Doug Miller, Jeff Albrecht, Rusty Brockman, and Frank Witting were interviewed by C. Herb Skoog on on Reflections #2183. I am informally calling this one "a bet for a goldfish."

    Season 2 #20- He needs no introduction if you are a fan of Polka music or a frequent visitor to Wurstfest-Alex Meixner. Alex Meixner was first interviewed on November 11, 2014 by Carl Herb Scoog for Reflections #2189. He is a wonderful musician from a musical family and is a "must see" at Wurstfest here in New Braunfels. In this episode he discusses his background and how he ended up here at Wurstfest.

    S2 episode #18- continuing our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, J C Reagan interviews Ray Martinez for Reflection #747 on 9/3/1993. Ray Martinez recalls with amazing detail his experience on August 1, 1966 as he confronted Charles Whitman, the sniper in the University of Texas tower. Ray Martinez was an Austin Police officer at the time, he later became a Texas Ranger. He retired to and still lives in New Braunfels, Tx. I am informally calling this one, "people would see me in my uniform and say, "Go Get Him!""

    S2 # episode #17-La Calera (aka Dittlinger Village) This episode was taken from Reflections #649 where Guadalupe "Lupe" Suarez was interviewed by Tom Purdum on 9/3/1991. He talks about the La Calera area by the limestone quarry where the workers lived for decades. This episode coincides with the Museum's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and an exhibit on the village itself.

    s2-episode 16- In this episode, we listen in on Reflection program #489 recorded on July 9th,1987, hosted by C. Herb Skoog where he interviews Jesus "Jessie" Aguirre Sr. and his life living in New Braunfels. He emphasizes the importance of education while also looking back on the social issues Mexican Americans faced daily in New Braunfels. He shares the wisdom he has collected as he grew older and lets others know he is appreciative and does not let what he has endured bring him down. The Thumbnail is a picture of Stephen F. Austin school, a school for people of Mexican descents. This photo was taken in 1937.

This is the “earliest born” person interviewed in our collection. She is also the most advanced in age at just under 108 years old. I am informally calling this episode “work is your best medicine.”

Herb Skoog interviews Alvin Friesenhahn on 11/11/90 and #672 where Barron Schlameus interviews Kearney Haas on 2/10/92. I am informally calling this one "fabricator of liquid spirits."

Iris Schumann interviews Walton Hoffmann, David Freisenhahn, Jean Pfeuffer, Roberta Mueller on June 28, 1993. Then Reflections #855 where Iris Schumann interviews Wib Anacher, Bob Tays, Joline Erben, Betty Grist, Bobbie Purdum, Jean Pfeuffer on July 5, 1996. In particular listen to the stories of the “pumper races.”

    Season 2 #9-Special Memorial Day Edition Part 1- taken from Reflections #662 where Pat Coffee was interviewed by Barron Schlameus on 12/1/91 talking about her father Dan Coffee. Dan Coffee served in World War 2 and his story in WILD. So wild that I couldn't encapsulate it in just one podcast. Make sure to check out part 2 for the rest of the story.     Season 2 Episode #9 (10) Part 2 Special Memorial Day Episode-Taken from Reflections #662 with Pat Coffee is interviewed by Barron Schlameus on 21/1/01 talking about her father, Dan Coffee. This is a continuation of the WILD experiences that Dan Coffee had during World War 2. The Sophienburg participates in the Blue Star Museum program that offers free admission to active military, retired military and their families from 5/17 to 9/1.

    Season 2 episode #8 “the wall of water”

    Season 2 #8 -On the night of May 11-12, 1972 there was a terrible flash flood which tore through New Braunfels. The first part of this episode recalls this disastrous event by Vol “Smokey” Davis, Jr. on Reflections #746 hosted by Iris Schumann on 09/02/1993. The second part of this episode describes the contributions of C. Herb Skoog during this fateful night. Joe Grist hosted Fritzi Richter and Gerald Thiele on 03/20/2025 for Reflections #2405. I am informally calling this one- “the wall of water.”

    Season 2 episode #7- scholarship winner 2025 Sophienburg History Award (in honor of Myra Lee Adams Goff) - Rebecca Elena Zuniga. Her winning essay was about her grandmother Estella Delgado Farias who is the subject of Reflections #2332. Mrs. Farias was interviewed by Dr. Fred Willard on 8/28/2019. I am informally calling this one "playing house while visiting grandma at La Calera."

    Season 2 #6- This episode concentrates on the long-held tradition of the Kindermasken Parade and Ball. We hear from Lucille Rust on Reflections #33 hosted by C. Herb Skoog with Fred Oheim on 05/04/1977. In a second part we hear from Bobbie Purdum, Linda Dietert, Kay Specht, and Delores Patterson hosted by Roxolin Krueger on 03/06/2000.     S2 Episode 5- the "Jolly Rough Riders"

    S2 Episode 5- The first part of this episode includes an interview of Stella Scholl Platz on 7/27/1976 by C. Herb Skoog and Fred Oheim. The second part of this episode includes an interview of Franziska Dittlinger Liebscher on 3/13/1977 by C. Herb Skoog and Fred Oheim. They both talk about the early years of the 20th century. The story that connects them in the brief stop of Theodore Roosevelt in New Braunfels. Both ladies were there for an unannounced train stop of the President. Roosevelt was serenaded, poems were read and his body guards for the day were the "Jolly Rough Riders."

    S2 Episode #4- Millie Karbach is interviewed by C. Herb Skoog (with Fred Oheim) on 02/24/1977 for Reflections #0023. She describes part of the arduous journey that her relatives endured to reach New Braunfels and an interesting story about her father and the US Civil War. I am informally calling this one "A dancing Yankee horse."

    S2 episode #3 "I'm so nervous, I don't know if I can do this."

    Season2 episode #3- Herb Skoog interviewed by Roxolyn Krueger on 8/11/2016 for Reflections #2249. Herb describes his background in radio and how he made his way to New Braunfels. He is the originator of the Reflections programs in 1976 which include more than 1500 oral history recordings (he hosted more than half of them). We lost C. Herb Skoog recently. He was incredibly significant and important to the New Braunfels community. He will be sorely missed. I am calling this one (ironically) "I'm so nervous, I don't know if I can do this."

Also at the end of this episode they interview Al Schnabel from Reflections #18 (on February 25, 1977) talking about Berger Ball. I am informally calling this one “Gloomchasers in a tree.”

    Episode #19 New Year's Episode-In this episode we listen to pieces of Reflections #571, Francis Bridges and Lottie Miller interviewed by C. Herb Scoog, and Reflections $577 Edna Zipp and Walter Faust, Jr. also interviewed by C. Herb Skoog. The two parts cover some traditions surrounding New Year's in early 20th century New Braunfels. This one is informally called-"First and foremost- Herring Salad."

    Episode #16- Janelle Williams Berger is interviewed by Iris Schumann for reflections#906 on 11/6/97. Janelle Berger passed away erlier this year and we here at the Sophienburg wanted to pay tribute to her efforts in starting and growing our annual Weihnachtsmarkt. She did so much for the Sophienburg; she will be sorely missed.

    episode #13- From Reflections#2362, Maria Paniagua is interviewed by Joe Grist on November 8th, 2023. She discussed her trials and triumphs here in New Braunfels. Sadly, she passed away recently. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. As part of the Sophienburg's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we pay tribute to this amazing person. I am calling this one "the trials and triumphs of a single mom."
