My workplace is a prison. My client is the prisoner. Who am I? There are many kinds of social workers, but the kind that works in prisons is often asked, "Why would anyone work for prisoners?" "Is my son doing okay? Ask him to come meet me next week." "Madam, there is no vacancy in the shelter home, especially for a mentally disabled woman. Now what to do?" A social worker spends her days going in and out of prisons, shelter homes, and courts answering these and many more questions. As the person who mediates between the criminal justice system and a woman 'caught' by the system, answering these questions, and making the system legible is a part of her work. But what questions does she carry with her? How does she manage to see the human behind the crime? What goes on inside the head of someone who is at the heart of the criminal justice system?Over the last 10 months, we have been conducting writing workshops with 5 social workers from Prayas, a field action project which does social work intervention in the Criminal Justice System. It is housed in the Centre for Criminology and Justice in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). In feminist organisations and within the academic discourse, we sit with the term ‘safe space’ quite often and roll it in our mouth to reiterate how multifarious and ever changing that term is. But when we asked Muskan and Shomya what it means to them and where they feel the most at home, they responded that these were spaces they have created away from home. 20-year-old Muskan from Samastipur, Bihar and 19-year-old Shomya from Thane, Maharashtra joined this conversation on a Zoom call from their safe spaces where the former had children reading in the background and the latter had a group of friends moving in and out of the computer room. We have been meeting single women in small-town and rural India in our Ekal podcast series. In Episode 4, we meet a collective of single women in Marathwada, Maharashtra. What happens when the singular turns into a collective? The answers were manifold. Along with solidarity, sisterhood and revolution, the collective opened an ekal-hood that encompasses ideas of kaam (work), aaraam (rest), bandhuta (friendship), gyaan (knowledge), samadhan (resolution), astitva (existence) and adhikaar (rights). In our fourth episode of 'Ekal In The City', meet the single women of Beed, Nanded, Tuljapur, Osmanabad, Shirgapur, Kaij and Ambajogai, who have helped us see various ways of being, and new imaginations of living.We thank all the women of Ekal Mahila Sangathan who shared their stories with us, CORO from Mumbai who brought us together, our translator Vidya who helped us through the barrier of language and Sampada who lent her voice to a song from the film Kasav. This has truly been a collective effort.अपने ही रंग में नहाउं मैं तो अपने ही संग मैं गाउं.. एक सवाल, वे महिलाएं जिन्होंने अपनी मर्जी से अपने पति को छोड़ दिया है, उनके लिए हिन्दी, अंग्रेजी या किसी भी भाषा में कौन सा शब्द है? अगर, आपको नहीं पता तो हम बताते हैं -एमएनटी (MNT)—मी नवराएला टाकले —यानि, मैंने पति को छोड़ा! जब शब्द नहीं होते हैं तो बनाने पड़ते हैं! निरंतर पॉडकास्ट के सीरिज़ 'एकल इन द सिटी' में हम शहरों और गांवों के कई एकल आवाज़ों से आपकी मुलाकात करवाते रहे हैं. इस बार एपिसोड 4 में एक आवाज़ नहीं बल्कि मिलिए मराठवाडा, महाराष्ट् की एकल महिला संगठन से. मतलब एकल महिलाओं का समूह! इसका क्या मतलब है? क्या होता है जब एकल, समूह में बदलता है? एकजुटता, बहनापा और बदलाव की धरातल तैयार होती है, जिसकी ज़मीन पर खड़े काम, आराम, दोस्ती, ज्ञान, समाधान, अस्त्तिव, बंधुता, और अधिकार को देखने सामूहिक रूप से देखने का नज़रिया मिलता है, उसकी पहचान और ताकत विकसित होती है. 'एकल इन द सिटी के एपिसोड 4 में हम आपकी मुलाकात करवा रहे हैं महाराष्ट्र के मराठवाडा इलाके के बीड, नांदेड, तुलजापुर, ओसमानाबाद, शिरगापुर, काईजी और अंबाजोगाई की एकल महिलाओं से जिन्होंने हमें संगठित रूप से जीने एवं खुद के लिए खड़े होने की कहानियों से मोह लिया. इस एपिसोड को संभव बनाने के लिए हम एकल महिला संगठन की महिलाओं का शुक्रिया अदा करना चाहते हैं जिन्होंने खुलकर हमसे बात की.साथ ही मुम्बई स्थित कोरो संस्था का आभार जिन्होंने संगठन की महिलाओं से हमारी पहचान करवाई. भाषा कोई बाधा न बन सके इसलिए सरल एवं सटीक अनुवाद के लिए अनुवादक विद्या का शुक्रिया. इसके साथ ही सम्पदा का बहुत आभार जिन्होंने अपनी आवाज़ में मराठी फिल्म 'केशव' के गानें को हिन्दी में गाकर पूरे एपिसोड को बांध लिया है. ये सच में एक सामूहिक प्रस्तुति है.

In this episode, Virginia Woolf's A Room Of One's Own travels to the tehsil of Ajmer, Kekri in Rajasthan, and meets Annu, a 31-year-old woman who gives it her own meaning. What does this room look like today? Annu talks about being ekal (single) in her room on a terrace, where she embarks on building a relationship with herself and her small town, more romantic and introspective than any other relationship she has been in.  Annu's every day in this room, through the lens of a single woman, is poetic. She says 'Ek hi kamre mein maine bahut jagah bana li hai (I have made a lot of space in my one room)' and then takes us to multiple spaces she inhabits in a single day. What does it mean to have a space for yourself in the kasbah of Kekri?  Tune in as Annu takes us to her land—bhaavnagari—the city of feelings. Artwork by Nandini Moitra Sound track: Bhaavnagri by Anahitaएकल इन द सिटी के इस तीसरे एपिसोड में मिलिए अनु से जो छत पर बने अपने कमरे से हमारा परिचय करवाती हैं. आज से करीब 76 साल पहले वर्जिनिया वुल्फ ने अपने लेख ‘अ रूम ऑफ़ वन्स ओन’ में लिखा था कि रचनात्मक रचने के लिए लड़कियों और महिलाओं के पास अपना एक कमरा होना चाहिए. किसे पता था कि अजमेर जिले के केकड़ी गांव में 31 साल की अनु उस ‘अपना एक कमरा’ को इतने सम्मान के साथ चरितार्थ कर रही होगी.   इस एपिसोड में अनु, अपने कमरे को एक दोस्त, परिवार के एक सदस्य की तरह देखती हैं. “मैं सुबह 5.30 बजे उठ जाती हूं. मुझे सुबह कटोरी में चाय पीना बहुत अच्छा लगता है. ये मोमेंट मेरी रोज़मर्रा की ज़िन्दगी में सबसे अहम है.” क्या आपने कभी सोचा है कि एकल लड़की के लिए चाभी का गुच्छा उसके अस्त्र-शस्त्र हो सकते हैं? कैसा होता है एकल होना? पडोसियों और दूसरे लोगों की नज़र में एकल लड़की या महिला जहां सवालों की लड़ी होती हैं, वहीं खुद के लिए उनके कई सवाल सुलझते जाते हैं. कैसे? आइए इस पॉडकास्ट के ज़रिए अनु के साथ उसकी भावनगरी में घूमते हुए इस गुत्थी के धागे साथ मिलकर खोलते हैं.

What is the nature of singlehood that may not yet be defined, but may be as rich as life itself? How single women make their homes and live and love in smaller towns and villages, is what we set out to document in Ekal in the City. We explore different kinds of ekal - being single - to celebrate life in its many ways of being.In the second episode of the series, Madhuri talks to two single women from Uttar Pradesh - Seema, a 27 years old journalist from Banda who works for a Hindi Digital News Channel - Bharat 1 News and Shabo, a 28 years old mobiliser in Vanangana, a rural community based women's rights collective, located in Bundelkhand and who is also an informal worker, working part time in the pad-making factories. They tell us how they found a family of ekal in the city. Exploring natal family violence, divorce, finding of community and sisterhoods in the bylanes of Bundelkhand, this episode looks at what may emerge from violent histories for women, and often, the answers may be as surprising as the women themselves.एकल इन द सिटी के दूसरे एपिसोड में माधुरी की मुलाक़ात उत्तर-प्रदेश में रहने वाली दो एकल महिलाओं से होती है. 27 वर्षीय सीमा, बांदा की रहने वाली हैं. वे पेशे से पत्रकार हैं और एक हिंदी डिजिटल न्यूज़ चैनल - भारत 1 न्यूज़ - के साथ काम करती हैं, वहीं 28 साल की शब्बो, बुंदेलखंड स्थित महिला अधिकार समूह 'वनांगना' की कार्यकर्ता हैं. वे संस्था के काम के बारे में लोगों को बताने एवं उन्हें संस्था से जोड़ने का काम करती हैं. दिन में कुछ घंटे वे एक सैनिटरी पैड बनाने वाली फैक्ट्री में भी काम करती हैं. इस एपिसोड में शब्बो और सीमा, दोनों ही खुलकर अपनी बातें साझा कर रही हैं. वे बताती हैं कि कैसे उन्हें शहर के भीतर एकल परिवार मिला. बुंदेलखंड में जन्म लेने से लेकर वहां की गलियों में बड़े होने, पारिवारिक हिंसा की क्रूरता को झेलने से लेकर तलाक़ से गुज़रने के बाद एक समुदाय में आपसी बहनापे को पाना, यह एपिसोड उन घटनाओं का दस्तावेज़ है जो महिला हिंसा से जुड़ती हैं. ये कहानियां हमें बताती हैं कि महिलाओं के साथ होने वाली हिंसा के तार इतिहास की गलियों से होते हुए किस नए रुप में सामने आते हैं. अक्सर, इसकी पड़ताल से निकलने वाले जवाब हम महिलाओं को भी चौंका जाते हैं. आइए मिलकर सुनते हैं सीमा और शब्बो की कहानी.

They roam the streets of Banda, a former gun town, and say things to each other that they may have only thought of before. What emerges is a tapestry of wonder and doubt, of curiosity and gumption, in an open-ended relationship of two single women with themselves, and their cities. महानगरों या बड़े शहरों से दूर किसी सुदूर इलाके में एकल महिला होने के क्या अर्थ हैं? शहरों की रुमानियत से दूर ऐसी जगहों पर एक महिला के अकेले रहने के अनुभव कैसे होते हैं? कोई एकल क्यों होता है? कौन से शब्द हैं जो इसे परिभाषित करते हैं? क्या यह संपूर्ण जीवन है या जीवन का एक हिस्सा? छोटे शहरों या गांवों में अकेले रहने वाली महिलाओं का जीवन कैसा होता है? घर और प्यार के इर्द-गिर्द वे अपना संसार कैसे रचती हैं, इन पहेलीनुमा सवालों को सुलझाने के लिए कई गांवों और शहरों की यात्राएं कर, हम एकल महिलाओं की कहानियां आपके लिए लेकर आए हैं. इस सीरीज़ के पहले एपिसोड में शहर और गांव एक दूसरे के साथ-साथ चलते हैं. 25 साल की माधुरी, महानगर में मेट्रो, ऑटो, कैब की सवारी करती, इधर-उधर भटक रही हैं ताकि उन्हें रहने के लिए एक फ्लैट मिल सके. इसी बीच काम के सिलसिले में उन्हें महानगर से बाहर जाना पड़ता है, अपनी भटकन को अपने बैग में पैक कर वे पहुंच जाती हैं उत्तर प्रदेश के बांदा इलाक़े में जिसे कभी ‘बंदूकों का नगर’ कहा जाता था. वहां, माधुरी की मुलाक़ात शबीना से होती है. शबीना की उम्र 40 साल है और वे इस कस्बे में कई सालों से अकेले रह रही हैं. अब, अपने-अपने अनुभवों के साथ दोनो बांदा की सड़कों पर घूम रही हैं. इस समय वे एक-दूसरे को ऐसी बातें बताती हैं जिनके बारे में शायद ख़ुद भी उन्होंने इससे पहले कभी सोचा नहीं था. इन अनुभवों में क्या-क्या छुपा है? शायद आश्चर्य, या संदेह, या फ़िर जिज्ञासाएं या कुछ ऐसा जो हमने पहले कभी न सुना न जाना हो!  आइए सुनते हैं अपने-अपने शहरों के साथ इन दोनों एकल महिलाओं के रिश्ते और उनके किस्से...
