EP. 67 - Jared Bernstein: Why Fear Never Goes Away — And That’s the Point
Jared Bernstein opens this conversation with a raw spoken-word piece — a window into the inner world he’s spent a lifetime learning how to face, process, and express. From a childhood shaped by insecurity and silence to becoming a baal teshuva in his thirties, Jared shares how creativity became his way of making sense of everything — fear, identity, relationships, and his connection to G-d.Through poetry, painting, and honest reflection, Jared explores the ongoing battle with the inner critical voice — and how writing, observing, and expressing those thoughts can transform them. This is a conversation about courage, not as something you arrive at, but something you practice — again and again.Find your orange socks by leaning into who you already are.About Jared:My earliest creative memory is of comparing a drawing I made to one by mybest friend. My stick figure paled beside his confident lines, and in thatmoment, I decided I couldn't draw. The discouragement was immediate andvisceral — but I wasn't ready to let go. That tension between doubt andpersistence has shaped everything since. My work returns to those early feelings of inadequacy — not to relive them, but to move through them. As a baal teshuva, this journey is not only artisticbut spiritual: a process of returning, of seeking connection with G-d throughcreation. In this space I've found freedom — the ability to create withoutjudgment, to trust instinct over expectation. At its core, my practice is about courage. The willingness to risk failure, stayvulnerable, and continually reinvent. I work intuitively across poetry, photography, and painting, allowing each piece to emerge raw and unfiltered— something close to the immediacy of Basquiat, where expression takesprecedence over perfection.Whether through image or text, I give form to my inner world. Creationbecomes both confrontation and transformation — a way to navigate identity, reconcile inner conflict, and deepen my connection to the divine. Between2020 and 2025, a period of intense growth, I came to understand thatvulnerability carries a universal resonance. That many of us, at some time, gave up on fully expressing ourselves.*Bio*Jared Bernstein was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and was raised in NewJersey. At a young age, he was shaped by a fascination with words and abelief that there was something going on beyond what his eyes could see. These characteristics sparked Jared’s passion for writing stories and painting, which he later published in a book “Courageous Chicken” (Ktav 2021) - Ajourney to living courageously, portrayed through paintings and poems. Hestudied photography and business at Pace University in New York City andearned a BBA in finance.Raised in a secular home, Jared embraced a Torah-observant lifestyle in hisearly thirties. He lives in Jerusalem with his wife and children.Jared’s work is exhibited in galleries and is sold worldwide.Website - https://www.courageouschicken.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/courageouschicken/Photography work = https://www.jaredbernsteinphotography.comAish Hatorah -https://aish.com/revealing-the-soul-of-an-artist/Jerusalem Post - https://www.jpost.com/j-spot/article-798933?utm_source=jpost.app.apple&utm_medium=shareJewish action Oct 7 - https://jewishaction.com/web-exclusive/commemorating-october-7-through-art/?utm_source=SilverpopMailing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Oct+7+2025+Newsletter+(1)&utm_content=&spMailingID=36051984&spUserID=MjQwODMyOTUxNTYS1&spJobID=3003186908&spReportId=MzAwMzE4NjkwOAS2More about Orange Socks:Contact us at [email protected] on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/orange-socks-podcast/id1749369628On Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5Ec3LbPdujZG531xKLPssh?si=381bf3bb2b624ffdOn Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@OrangeSocksPodcastConnect with Yitzchok Moullyhttps://www.instagram.com/moullyart/https://www.moullyart.com/

EP. 66 - Shimon Cowen: The Hidden Philosophy of Jewish Art
Shimon Cowen is a philosopher, rabbi, and founder of the Institute for Judaism and Civilization in Melbourne. Raised in a deeply intellectual home and trained in philosophy, his journey eventually led him into Torah learning and a lifelong exploration of the relationship between Judaism and culture. In this conversation, we discuss a question that sits at the center of his work: can there be truly great art that emerges from the spirit of Torah?Shimon shares his vision for serious Jewish art — art that doesn’t simply depict Jewish life, but grows out of Torah itself as its guiding framework. We explore the difference between Jewish artists and genuinely Jewish art, the responsibility of creators, and the possibility of building a movement that brings high-level artistic expression into the world of Torah.About Shimon:https://www.ijc.com.au/our-teamhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimon_CowenMore about Orange Socks:Contact us at [email protected] on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/orange-socks-podcast/id1749369628On Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5Ec3LbPdujZG531xKLPssh?si=381bf3bb2b624ffdOn Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@OrangeSocksPodcastConnect with Yitzchok Moullyhttps://www.instagram.com/moullyart/https://www.moullyart.com/

EP. 64 Sheva Chaya: The Fire Between Fragile and Unbreakable
Sheva Chaya is a glassblower, painter, and longtime Tzfat artist whose work bridges Torah, material, and meaning. In this conversation, we explore her journey from a Princeton painting class to building a life of art and family in the city of the Arizal. What began as personal self-expression evolved into something much larger — a commitment to creating work rooted in Klal Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael, and the inner light of Torah. Through the metaphor of molten glass — fragile shards transformed by fire into something unified and unbreakable — Sheva shares how Chassidus, Zohar, and creativity intersect in her studio and in her life.We speak about presence, idealism, resisting the pull of commercial art culture, and the courage to create without chasing validation. This episode is a reflection on art as avodah, on slowing down enough to truly see, and on reclaiming creativity as something deeply and essentially Jewish. As always, the invitation is to find your orange socks by leaning into who you already are.About Sheva Chaya:https://www.shevachaya.com/https://www.instagram.com/shevachaya/

EP. 63 - Rosa Katzenelson: Painting Paradox and Jewish Identity
Rosa Katzenelson is an Argentine-born Jewish artist whose vibrant, textured paintings explore soul, exile, unity, and transformation. In this episode of Orange Socks, we sit inside Rosa’s studio and talk about her journey from psychology and filmmaking in Buenos Aires to becoming a baalat teshuva and finding her voice through paint. She shares the impact of a confrontational art mentor who pushed her to paint from the soul, the late-night Chabad encounter that changed her life, and how she sees art as a tool to elevate reality — like a brush that can transform darkness into light. We explore her recurring themes of galut and geulah, material and spiritual, unity through difference, and the idea that everything — from painting to cooking — can become holy depending on how it’s used. This is a conversation about depth, paradox, Jewish identity, and the courage to create from your inner truth. And ultimately, it’s about finding your orange socks by leaning into who you already are.About Rosa:https://rosakatzenelson.com/Home.htmlhttps://www.instagram.com/rosakatzenelsonMore about Orange Socks:Contact us at [email protected] on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/orange-socks-podcast/id1749369628On Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5Ec3LbPdujZG531xKLPssh?si=381bf3bb2b624ffdOn Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@OrangeSocksPodcastConnect with Yitzchok Moullyhttps://www.instagram.com/moullyart/https://www.moullyart.com/

EP. 61 - Reuven Flamer: Creativity as the Way Out of Spiritual Autopilot
Reuven Flamer is a longtime creative thinker whose journey weaves together Chassidus, film, food, and an unshakable refusal to live by rote. In this wide-ranging conversation, Rabbi Flamer reflects on growing up in the countercultural 60s, searching for meaning through experimentation, and eventually being pulled—“kicking and screaming”—into Chabad. He shares how creativity survived ejecting, detours, failed utopias, hurricanes, and decades of tension between conformity and individuality, and how that spark continues to drive his work in filmmaking, podcasting, and spiritual exploration.Together, we unpack what it really means to be creative in Judaism: the difference between mastering details and reaching essence, why rote religion drains the soul, and how true creativity is not rebellion but relationship. Drawing on Chassidic thought, personal stories, and a powerful letter from the Rebbe, Rabbi Flamer reframes creativity as shlichus—the ability to see the divine core in people and bring it to the surface. This episode is an invitation to take risks, resist spiritual autopilot, and rediscover the revolution at the heart of Yiddishkeit—by finding your orange socks and leaning into who you already are.About Reuven:https://www.linkedin.com/in/reuven-flamer-45113a165https://www.streetfarbrengen.net/https://www.highercorners.org/More about Orange Socks:Contact us at [email protected] on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/orange-socks-podcast/id1749369628On Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5Ec3LbPdujZG531xKLPssh?si=381bf3bb2b624ffdOn Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@OrangeSocksPodcastConnect with Yitzchok Moullyhttps://www.instagram.com/moullyart/https://www.moullyart.com/

EP. 60 - Rabbi Raps on Social Media Without the ‘Rabbi Filter’
Rabbi Avraham “Rabbi Raps” Rapoport is a Chabad rabbi, content creator, and community builder who brings warmth, honesty, and creativity to the way he shows up online and offline. In this episode of Orange Socks, Rabbi Raps reflects on growing up in Atlantic City, early instincts for video and storytelling, and the inner tension between fitting the expected “rabbi box” and showing up as his full, authentic self. We explore how social media can be a space for genuine connection rather than performance, why imperfection builds trust, and how creativity works best when it’s grounded in real life. This is a thoughtful conversation about purpose, vulnerability, and finding your orange socks by leaning into who you already are.Episode Link: spoti.fi/OrangeSocks60About Rabbi Raps: https://www.rabbiraps.com/https://www.instagram.com/rabbiraps/Creatives Rabbi Raps thinks you should know:The Rebbe https://www.chabad.org/therebbe/default_cdo/jewish/TheRebbeorg.htmMore about Orange Socks:Contact us at [email protected] on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/orange-socks-podcast/id1749369628On Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5Ec3LbPdujZG531xKLPssh?si=381bf3bb2b624ffdOn Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@OrangeSocksPodcastConnect with Yitzchok Moullyhttps://www.instagram.com/moullyart/https://www.moullyart.com/

Tali Yess is a musician, producer, and arranger whose creative journey began in childhood and evolved through performance, production, and personal reinvention. EP 58. - Moshe Wigder: Being Jewish Online in a Time of Hate
Moshe Wigder is a real estate agent who unexpectedly became one of the most recognizable Jewish faces on social media — and in this episode, he sits down as a friend, not a brand. Recorded in a space filled with personal and communal history, Moshe shares how he went from shy, hesitant selfie videos to building a massive online following, all while staying visibly Jewish and deeply grounded. Together, we talk about fear of the camera, perfectionism, consistency, and the quiet confidence it takes to show up before you feel “ready.” As the conversation deepens, Moshe speaks openly about going viral after October 7th — and the wave of antisemitic hate that followed. His perspective is both sobering and empowering: the hate was never personal, and it was never about content — it was about being Jewish. He offers a powerful reframing for Jewish creators who have gone silent, reminding them that showing up matters more than ever, and that light grows precisely where resistance appears. This episode is about creativity, courage, friendship, and responsibility — and why continuing to speak, post, and exist proudly is itself an act of strength.About Moshe:https://www.instagram.com/moshewigderContact Moshe at +1 917-244-4673More about Orange Socks:Contact us at [email protected] on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/orange-socks-podcast/id1749369628On Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5Ec3LbPdujZG531xKLPssh?si=381bf3bb2b624ffdOn Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@OrangeSocksPodcastConnect with Yitzchok Moullyhttps://www.instagram.com/moullyart/https://www.moullyart.com/

Keren Gordon is a painter whose work is rooted in positivity, Jewish spirituality, and the quiet intensity of lived experience. In this conversation, Karen shares how creativity has been a lifelong companion — encouraged early on, paused during years of motherhood, and eventually rediscovered through watercolor and later oils. She reflects on walking away from formal art education, choosing experimentation over theory, and relearning how to trust her instincts through disciplined daily practice and honest trial and error. We explore how Karen thinks about what belongs on the walls of a Jewish home, why she intentionally chooses uplifting subject matter, and how faith, family, and art coexist in seasons of life that allow for more—or less—creative time. From painting through turbulence to deciding what not to share with the world, Karen speaks candidly about growth, doubt, and defining success on her own terms. This episode is a thoughtful look at creating with integrity, raising children in an art-filled home, and listening closely to the quiet burn of what the soul needs to express.About Keren:https://www.kerengordon.com/https://www.instagram.com/keren_gordon_art/More about Orange Socks:Contact us at [email protected] on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/orange-socks-podcast/id1749369628On Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5Ec3LbPdujZG531xKLPssh?si=381bf3bb2b624ffdOn Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@OrangeSocksPodcastConnect with Yitzchok Moullyhttps://www.instagram.com/moullyart/https://www.moullyart.com/

EP. 52- Andi Arnovitz: Stitching Stories of Pain, Power, and Faith
Andi Arnovitz is a Jerusalem-based artist whose work fuses beauty, tension, and truth — exploring Judaism, feminism, and the human condition through concept-driven art. Raised in a Reform family in Kansas City, Andi’s creative journey took her from art direction in New York advertising to becoming one of Israel’s most prominent contemporary religious Jewish artists. She shares the stories behind major pieces like A Robe for Rachel and The Trees Saw Everything, created in the wake of October 7th, and discusses how art can both mourn and heal. Andi speaks candidly about being an observant Jewish feminist artist in today’s world, and her belief that artists are “modern prophets,” responding in real time to the world around them. Her advice to young creatives: don’t imitate — stay true to what’s yours, keep showing up, and make meaning out of the moment you’re living.About Andi:Andi Arnovitz lives and works in Jerusalem, Israel. She is a conceptual artist, using etching, digital information and various printmaking processes, as well as fabric, thread and even porcelain to create both print series, artist books and large-scale installations. EP. 48 Moshe Shamah: Collage, Chaos, and the Call of Jewish Creativity.
Moshe Shamah, fresh from his U.S. art tour, brings the perspective of an Israeli artist who bridges worlds—diaspora and homeland, religious and secular, analog and digital. We sat together in front of my mural HaMelech Basadeh and explored how his art became a response to the upheaval after October 7th, and how collage, for him, is not just cutting and pasting but transforming chaos into new meaning. Moshe shared how his Judaica, and mixed-media work speak across communities, and why he insists on staying rooted in human imperfection in an age of AI. Our conversation went deeper into the role of Jewish creativity today—how artists must give voice where words fall short, how culture becomes a form of resilience, and why this moment demands a new Jewish renaissance. We spoke openly about the struggles of measuring worth in likes and algorithms, the necessity of creating for its own sake, and the responsibility to share our light as “October 8th Jews.” Moshe’s message to young creatives was simple yet urgent: don’t wait, just make.About Moshe:Moshe Shamah is a Jerusalem-based artist, Jewish educator and founder of Studio Shamah. His work aims to capture the convergence of old and new, of antiquity and futurism, as it relates to Jewish tradition, peoplehood and history. Bridging the gap between mixed-media collage and calligraphy, and more broadly, the art of words, Shamah aims to stimulate dialogue across the breadth of cultures and thought traditions - and play a small role in the emerging New Jewish Renaissance. Shamah holds a degree in Jewish Studies and Art History from Rutgers University, which he gained while sharing an art studio on the campus of arts at the same time. His solo exhibitions have been featured both in Israel, Serbia and the United States, with upcoming exhibits planned in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Johannesburg, Warsaw, Kyiv, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
