Hello and welcome to Pali Room, a platform of recorded conversations, exchanges and offerings organized by Onassis AiR. My name is Danai Giannoglou, I am a curator, writer and former Onassis AiR fellow and today I'm particularly happy to welcome to the studio artist Paky Vlassopoulou, for what I'm hoping to be a conversation that will shed more light on her research and hopefully pull and follow several threads relating to it. I must admit that Paky is not only a dear friend, but also an artist I've worked with on many different occasions, so I like to think of today's conversation as the continuation of a discussion we started years ago. Welcome Paky and thank you very much for joining me.

In this conversation, I am very happy to welcome Felipe Steinberg. Felipe is a visual artist whose work focuses on systems of representation through various media that explore the constructed meanings of the local and the global. Felipe is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VII, with a collective research focus on economies through the lens of community economies. Today, we will discuss about invisible forms of labor and its redistribution towards an economy of care.

Marta is a Polish performing arts curator, writer and researcher currently based in Utrecht. Her curatorial and research practice focuses on the potentiality of alternative processes of instituting and on redefining modes of transnational artistic cooperation. Marta is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VI with a collective research focus on modes of governance through the lens of institutions. In this conversation, we draw from Marta's experience to discuss feminist approaches on instituting otherwise.

Theo is a visual artist and director based in Athens. Often the outcome of a socially engaged and participatory art process his work encompasses a variety of media, including film and installations that address the role of historicity and the power structures involved in the production of political subjectivities. Theo is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VII with a collective research focus on the notion of community economies. Today, we will draw from his experience in autonomous practices of education to discuss ways of fostering an economy of care.

Today, I am having a conversation with Vladimir Miller, an artist, researcher, scenographer and dramaturg. His practice focuses on collaborative research, education and spatial organization through the development of spatial and institutional structures for artistic research and practice. As program and research curator at a.pass Vladimir creates multidisciplinary, collaborative spaces and project trajectories that encourage the production of self-organized environments of artistic practice. He is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VI that centers around the collective study of governance with a specific focus on institutions. In this conversation, we discuss about processes of constructing spaces of collective learning.

In this conversation I am very happy to welcome virgil b/g taylor. With a background in public history and fine arts, Virgil's interest focuses on time and history and especially on moments of transition and histories of crisis and care through the use of various artistic media, including printmaking, film and installation. Virgil is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VI with a collective research focus on modes of governance through the lens of institutions. Today, we discuss, among other things, about the notion of exclusion and access in instituting otherwise.

Today, I have the chance to speak with Marcela Menezes. Marcela is a social activist from Brazil with varied experiences in social movements, in academia and in the cultural field. Since 2009, she has co-founded and taken part in several collectives that pursue alternative economic, cultural and political practices through community engagement from the perspective of solidarity economy. Marcela is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VII with a collective research focus on the notion of community economies. Drawing from her own experience in community organizing, in this conversation we trace together the social roots of a solidarity economy by discussing how we build a common ground.

Today, I'm having a conversation with George Papadopoulos. With a background in economics. Yorgos combines economics and philosophy with an exploratory artistic practice that focuses on the institution of money, its socio-economic functions and the technologies that support it. Yorgos is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VII, with a collective research focus on the notion of community economies. In this conversation, we discuss his research into money as an institution to trace alternative systems of valuation that lead the way towards a community economy.

In this series of recorded encounters we speak with the participants of Onassis AiR to shed light on their artistic practices and needs, as well as to reflect on ways of being and working together. This afternoon, I am very happy to welcome Saba Khan, a visual artist from Lahore, Pakistan. Through her work that includes painting, sculpture, photography and installation, Saba balances grandeur, artifice and satire in order to address environmental as well as sociological issues related to her country's complex colonial past. Between 2014 and 2020, she was running the Marine Museum artist, residency and artist led initiative in a British Colonial Hill town, and in 2019, she founded the satirical artist collective Pak Khawateen Painting Club. In June 2022, Saba conducted a one-month research in Athens as part of the Onassis AiR Tailor-made Fellowships program. In this conversation, we draw from her individual, as well as her collective practice, to discuss about her research into the notion of Third World modernism.

Today I am in conversation with Amanda Vincelli, a cultural organizer based in Montreal. Using art as a tool for personal, social and economic transformation, Amanda has been developing accessible public programing and collaborative learning initiatives through a practice of commoning and making kin. Amanda is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VII with a collective research focus on the notion of community economies. In this conversation, we draw from her experience in community organizing and in non-monetary exchange initiatives to discuss about systems of cooperation and care.

Today, I am in conversation with Stella Ioannidou an artist, designer and urban researcher based between Athens and New York. Stella's practice oscillates between the fields of architectural and urban research, of critical cartography and visual experimentation in an attempt to analyze and reflect on existing systems of governance, economy and infrastructure, as well as on the socio-spatial dimensions that reproduce conditions of injustice. Stella is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VII with a collective research focus on the notion of community economies. Together, we discuss how the spaces we share can help us construct narratives of mutual sustenance.

Today, I am very happy to welcome Orestis Athanasopoulos, an artist and filmmaker based in Paris. Orestis works on long term and participatory projects that look into informal cultural connections and the mechanisms of identity construction, often in relation to food production and consumption. Orestis is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement VII with a collective research focus on the notion of community economies. In this conversation, we take food as a starting point to discuss his filmic practice and research interest into the emergence of communities.

This afternoon I am very happy to welcome back Paribartana Mohanty. Paribartana is a storyteller working with various artistic media, such as video, lecture performance, painting, writing and curating. In addition to his individual work, he is also part of WALA, an artist collective based in Delhi engaged in public, community and site-specific art projects, public performances and guided tours in the city. In October 2019, Paribartana came to Athens as a participant of the (Inter)national Residency program of Onassis AiR. In this conversation we discuss about his research into art and labor and more specifically into the notion of art field cannibalism that he tries to tackle in his work through the design of game situations.

Today, I'm having a conversation with Nuno Cassola, a Portuguese filmmaker and cinematographer based in Athens. Working in the intersection of cinema, anthropology and fictional archaeology, Nuno's artistic practice revolves around the notion of alterity and body displacement through an array of different media, including video, photography, sound, installation, objects, texts and actions. Nuno is also one of the co-founders of Khora, a community center committed to provide services to anyone that needs them. Nuno is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement V, focusing on modes of governance through a collective research on the notion of self-organization. In this conversation, we discuss about the values of solidarity and community through experiences of moving in search for the other.

Joey is a curator and arts worker living and working in New York. Through his independent writing and curatorial projects Joey explores how material and immaterial infrastructures relate to the reproduction and resistances of precarious forms of life. He is also the co-director of the Center for Experimental Lectures, where he explores the various ways that knowledge is embodied, given form communicated and administered. Joey is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement V, which focuses on a collective study of governance by delving deeper into the notion of self-organization. Together, we discuss about his involvement in independent collective organizing in the arts, as well as his research interest in the ways that infrastructures assert and represent authority.

In this conversation, I'm very happy to be speaking with Harry Isra Muhammad. Harry is a researcher and editor focusing on the intersection between literature, art, locality and its ecosystem, especially in eastern Indonesia. Harry is a co-founder and part of Jalur Timur, an independent collective whose praxis develops around contemporary art and cultural activism in eastern Indonesia and beyond. He is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement V, delving into a collective study on issues of governance and more specifically the notion of self-organization. Today, we discuss about the notion of the collective and the role of friendship and care in fostering collective governance.

In this conversation, I am speaking with Paz Ponce. Paz is an independent Spanish curator, researcher and writer based in Berlin. Over the past decade, she has been developing process-oriented formats, such as archival and research exhibition projects, art-in-residency programs, learning platforms and professional networks, investigating the collective context in which art is produced and mediated. Paz is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement V with a collective research focus on modes of governance through the lens of self-organization. Today, we discuss about collective practice as a medium for instituting otherwise.

In this conversation, I have the chance to speak with Aris Papadopoulos. Aris is a dancer, maker and performer based in Athens. With a background in architecture Aris sees the landscape as a cultural construction and as a heavily charged field of potentiality for action, exploration, playfulness and composition. In spring 2020, Aris was a participant of the Critical Practices Program of Onassis AiR. Today, we discuss about his research interest around the reciprocal scheme of embodying landscape versus shaping an experience that he further explored during his residency through the format of an audio-guided performative walk. On this occasion, we have also invited to this conversation his two mentors who worked closely with Aris and supported him for the development of his research, Lenio Kaklea, a dancer, choreographer and writer based in Paris, and Dimitris Theodoropoulos, an architect working in the intersection of art, architecture and spatial design.

Today, I'm very happy to be speaking with Cate Giordano, an Onassis AiR (Inter)national resident 2019/20. Cate spent one month in Athens making objects and exploring parent child relationships through the lens of classical sculpture and Greek myth. In this Conv(AiR)sation, we discuss about the ways narration is used to create power structures looking into their past projects, as well as into the research that they conducted in Athens. For this conversation, we have also invited Xenia Vitos, a visual artist based in Athens, in order to expand on the notion of storytelling and world making that they both share in their work.

In this series of recorded encounters we speak with the participants of Onassis AiR to shed light on their artistic practices and needs, as well as to reflect on ways of being and working together. In this conversation, I'm speaking with Laure Jaffuel, a French independent designer and art director based in Athens. Through her multilayered practice Laure emphasizes on the design and the construction of situations surrounding her objects. In spring 2020, Laure was a participant of the Critical Practices Program of Onassis AiR, where she investigated the notion of the public space and how the different typologies of public space in Athens deploy strategies to create solidarities, social exchange and collective experiences. Today, we discuss about her research that culminated in the publication titled "All Day, All Night". On this occasion, we have also invited to our discussion one of her mentors, Olga Hatzidaki, an independent curator and co-founder of TAVROS.

Today, I'm having a conversation with Margarita Pita, a freelance lawyer, mediator and social artist based in Athens. In parallel to her practice in law Margarita has worked as a creative producer for numerous participatory arts projects spanning from community arts and cultural integration to research and management. She's the co-founder of Movement Lab, a safe space for physical theater, laboratory training and movement based projects against gender based violence. Margarita is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement V, with a collective research focus on the notion of self-organization. In this conversation, we start from the intersection of art and law in her practice to discuss the issue of self-regulation and the role of negotiation within self-organization.

Today, I'm having a conversation with Bryony Dunne. Bryony is an Irish visual artist based between Greece and Ireland. With a background in documentary photography and visual anthropology, in her work Bryony explores the relations between humanity and nature, the arbitrariness of cultural representation, the legacies of colonialism and the fantasies of human control. She's a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement IV with a collective research focus on the notion of ecologies. Together, we discuss the use of storytelling and film narration in challenging our anthropocentric worldview.

Chrysanthi is a visual artist based in Athens. Her practice, which comprises of different artistic media, such as prints, video, sound and metal constructions, focuses on language and the notion of translation through the creation of new symbolic systems and codes of communication. In Fall 2019, we both participated in the Critical Practice program of Onassis AiR. Today, we talk about her research interest into public space and into nonverbal acts of communication, while discussing some of her individual projects, as well as her collective work at 3 137, an artist run space that she co-founded in 2012 and co-runs together with Kosmas Nikolaou and Paky Vlassopoulou.

Today, it is my great pleasure to welcome Asli Özdoyuran.  Asli is an artist and researcher living and working in Istanbul. Along her artistic research and practice, which focuses on the intersection of physiology and culture, Asli is running BAS, a non-profit space in Istanbul initiated by Banu Cennetoglu and dedicated to the collection, display, production and distribution of artist books. She's also a facilitator of Omuz, a solidarity network in the field of art and culture established in order to respond to the economic precarities and inequalities which became acutely visible during the pandemic. Asli is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement V with a collective research focus on modes of governance through the lens of self-organization. In this conversation, we talk about self-organization and artistic practices in relation to mutual aid and solidarity initiatives.

In this series of recorded encounters we speak with the participants of Onassis AiR to shed light on their artistic practices and needs, as well as to reflect on ways of being and working together. In this conversation, we meet Inés Muñozcano, with whom in Fall 2019, we participated together in the Critical Practice Program of Onassis AiR. Inés is an art historian and curator based in Madrid. Her curatorial practice focuses on the historical, esthetic, economic and virtual connections that bring together different countries, people and artistic communities. Today, we discuss about her time in Athens and her research into the Athenian art scene that culminated in "Eros and Thanatos Real Estate", the exhibition that she curated inside an old Athenian house in the neighborhood of Kypseli. On this occasion, we also invited Matteo Revillo, a longtime collaborator of Ines and one of the participating artists of the exhibition to further expand on the relationship between artist and curator.

In this conversation, I am speaking with Lito Skopeliti. Lito is a climate justice activist based in Athens. She's part of the Global Support team of the international movement Extinction Rebellion and part of the Participative Democracy Work Group that provides tools for communities in order to foster deliberative, participatory democracy processes through people's assemblies. She's a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement III, with a collective research focus on issues of ecologies. Drawing from her experiences in performative activism, we discuss together about the importance of collective action and of cultural practices towards a regenerative culture of resilience and care.

Marina is a performer, writer and curator based in Athens. Together, we participated in the Critical Practices Program of Onassis AiR in Fall 2019. In her work, Marina explores the relation between voice and gender and the ever-changing roleplay between subject and object. During her residency, she looked into the politics of hosting through a performance that took the form of a lap dance and was finally presented in the exhibition 'It moves, and it shouts' at Haus N' Athen in December 2019. Today, we discuss about her experience at Onassis AiR, her interest into voice and its historicity and we have also invited the curator, Panos Giannikopoulos, to talk together about the piece that she created for the show.

In this conversation, we speak with Lydia Xynogala. With a background in architecture Lydia works across formats and scales as a designer, writer and scholar, making buildings, interiors, objects, environments and exhibitions that explore the material affects of built artifacts in the construction of cultural narratives. She is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement III, with a collective research focus on the notion of ecologies. Today, we discuss about matter as an active marker of time and the role of architecture in generating new building typologies, as well as new types and forms of communal engagement and production.

In this conversation, we speak with Marc Delalonde. Marc is a curator, cultural worker and researcher working at the intersections of arts, community building, environmental philosophy and political ecology and is currently based in Athens. Marc is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement III, which revolves around a collective research on issues of ecologies as well as human and more-than-human interactions. Today, we talk together about art and ecology by discussing his research into the scientific concept of symbiosis and its application in the socio-cultural framework through the notion of "SumbioArt".

In this series of recorded encounters we speak with the participants of Onassis AiR to shed light on their artistic practices and needs, as well as to reflect on ways of being and working together. In this conversation, we are speaking with Christina Kotsilelou, a product designer and chef based in Athens. Through her practice Christina has been experimenting and creatively combining design and cooking in various ways. Food has been an integral part of the Onassis AiR program since day one. Christina participated in The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement III, that focused on the notion of ecologies. Drawing from her experience and practice we discuss together issues concerning food production and distribution, sustainability and environmental ethics. 

In this series of recorded encounters we speak with the participants of Onassis AiR to shed light on their artistic practices and needs, as well as to reflect on ways of being and working together. Today, we have the chance to talk with Manolis Manousakis, a composer and sound designer based in Athens. With a passion for recording soundscapes and creating interactive audio documentaries, Manolis traveled to Lebanon to conduct a two-month research at Beirut Art Residency as part of the Onassis AiR Exchange Residencies Program 2019/20. In this conversation, we talk about his research into the soundscape of the city of Beirut and its people, as well as about his involvement with Medea Electronique collective and Koumaria Residency. On this occasion, we have also invited the Lebanese artist and sound designer Nour Sokhon in order to trace the parallels of the auditory experiences of Athens and Beirut.

In this conversation, we speak with Tristan Bera. Tristan is an artist and writer whose practice includes curating, critical writings, film making, and performances. He studied fine arts, aesthetics, history of contemporary art and political science. He is a participant of The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement III, which has a collective research focus on the notion of ecologies. Today, we talk about the intersection of art, ecology and technology taking as a starting point his research interest and practice in experimental philosophy, intertextuality and cinematography.

In this conversation, we are  speaking with Samuel Hertz. Sam is a Berlin based composer, sound artist and researcher working at the intersections of sound, sonic sensualities and climate change. He participates in The School of Infinite Rehearsals Movement III, with a collective research focus on ecologies as well as human and more-than-human interactions. Today, we talk about the notion of sonic ecology by discussing his research practice, where he investigates the connections between sound and climate through an emphasis on geologic, geographic, ecological and social listening practices.
