PeppTalks with Jeanne Pepper Ep 327 Eric Lichtblau & Shereen Rahming
Eric Lichtblau is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and best-selling author known for his deep dives into the most pressing issues of national security, civil rights, and political extremism. Having spent years at The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, Lichtblau has built a career on exposing the hidden structures of power and prejudice. His latest work, American Reich: A Murder in Orange County, Neo-Nazis, and a New Age of Hate, serves as a definitive account of the modern far-right movement, using the tragic murder of Blaze Bernstein as a lens to examine the rise of the Atomwaffen Division.Joining the conversation is Shereen Rahming, a children’s author, educator, and a key figure in the South Orange County activism scene. Born in Belize, Shereen moved to the United States and eventually settled in Ladera Ranch, where her efforts to address systemic intolerance and a conservative culture of exclusion caught the attention of major media outlets. Shereen’s journey from a dedicated educator to a vocal community advocate provided Eric Lichtblau with a vital local perspective for his investigation, making her a central interviewee in the pages of American Reich.American ReichThe intersection of Eric and Shereen’s work is a study in meaningful synchronicity. While Eric was mapping the national landscape of neo-Nazi radicalization, Shereen was confronting the manifestation of those same ideologies on the ground in her own neighborhood. Their shared presence in this investigative project highlights a crucial truth: that the work of a global journalist and a local activist are two sides of the same coin when it comes to defending democratic values and protecting vulnerable communities. In this episode, host Jeanne Pepper explores the "unusual synchronicities" that bind these guests together. A striking example of this occurred when a podcast volunteer spotted Shereen in a Starbucks reading American Reich, only to discover she was a featured subject in the book. This is the meeting that bridged the gap between the recorded history in Eric’s pages and the ongoing reality of Shereen’s advocacy, illustrating how deeply the "New Age of Hate" has impacted individual lives and community structures alike.Episode 327Hosted by: Jeanne PepperGuest: Eric Lichtblau & Shereen RahmingProducer: Eli MoskowitzOriginal Theme: Jay BernsteinSpecial Thank You to our volunteersFOLLOW or SUBSCRIBE to PeppTalks with JeanneFacebook: PeppTalks with Jeanne PepperInstagram: @pepptalkswithjeanneLinkedIn: Jeanne PepperDISCLAIMER Jeanne Pepper is providing this podcast as a public service. It is a story of a mother’s love evolving into a protective shield for all children in the state of Michigan. This interview serves as both a tribute to Rowan—a boy who loved golf and had an infectious smile—and a call to action. PeppTalks with Jeanne Pepper Ep 316 Julie M Anderson Holburn Investigative Journalist
Journalist Julie Anderson-Holburn reveals the shocking findings of her investigative work, which centers on alleged corruption in Orange County, California, and Arizona Family Courts. She discusses the pattern where judges are accused of ignoring credible evidence of abuse (sexual, physical, and psychological), and instead, prioritizing the profits of court-appointed "expert" evaluators, reunification therapists, and lawyers. This system, Julie argues, often penalizes protective parents (usually mothers) who raise allegations of abuse, effectively silencing and traumatizing both women and children.Episode 316Hosted by: Jeanne Pepper Guest: Julie M Anderson HolburnProducer: Eli Moskowitz Original Theme: Jay Bernstein Special Thank You to our volunteersFOLLOW or SUBSCRIBE to PeppTalks with JeanneFacebook: PeppTalks with Jeanne PepperInstagram: @pepptalkswithjeanneLinkedIn: Jeanne PepperDISCLAIMER Jeanne Pepper is providing this podcast as a public service. PeppTalks with Jeanne Pepper Ep 307 Joe Dreamz Inspirational Hip Hop Artist
Joe Dreamz is a rising inspirational hip-hop artist, singer, and entrepreneur from San Diego, California, whom many describe as a "breath of fresh air" in the music industry. His platform is built not just on his music, which blends an "old school message with a new school sound," but on his powerful, purpose-driven movement to encourage others to "Live Joe Dreamz." He is also a singer and fashion designer. His music, which combines elements of both classic and alternative hip hop, is characterized by its distinctive style and fascinating, relevant, and motivating lyrics. Brayden Werschmidt, a compassionate 13-year-old, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah with an inspiring Bar Mitzvah project that not only honored the memory of a my son, Blaze Bernstein but also took a firm stand against bullying. Brayden's story is one of proactive kindness and a desire to create a more inclusive world.Touched by the life and tragic passing of Blaze, whom he knew from religious school at University Synagogue, Brayden dedicated his Bar Mitzvah project to the Blaze Bernstein Memorial Fund. PeppTalks with Jeanne Pepper Ep 218 Regan Philliips CEO of CASA Orange County
Regan first became involved with CASA in 2001 while living in New York City and studying at Columbia. She completed a one-year internship with CASA-NYC, launching her career advocating for children in the dependency system. While in law school, Regan worked as an investigator for the Law Office of Harold LaFlamme. The law firm contracted with Orange County to provide legal representation–minor’s counsel–for children in foster care. She was a member of her law school’s Moot Court Honors Board, president of the Alternate Dispute Resolution Board and completed a semester-long internship with Justice Richard M. Aronson of the California Court of Appeal, Fourth District, Division Three. She also met her husband at Chapman Law; they married shortly after graduating together in 2005. Upon receiving her Juris Doctor and passing the California Bar Examination, Regan was promoted from investigator to attorney for the Law Office of Harold LaFlamme. She was assigned to a trial court department at the Lamoreaux Justice Center in Orange, where she represented children in the foster care system. When a child is detained–removed from their home by a social worker because of alleged abuse, neglect, or abandonment–the child is termed a dependent of the state and is the subject of a dependency court case. The child’s fate is then primarily determined by a judicial officer based on the evidence presented in the case. The case is prosecuted by County Counsel. The child’s parents are entitled to be represented by an attorney, and a minor's counsel is appointed to represent and advocate for the child. In her role as minor’s counsel, Regan worked with CASA volunteers in the courtroom to obtain their valuable insight into the child’s life, and better advance the child's interests. She later advocated on behalf of dependent children at the Court of Appeal, participating in a number of writ and appeal dependency cases. Following the birth of her first child, Regan worked for a time as a solo practitioner handling private adoptions and as an associate attorney for Rigg & Dean, an Orange County personal injury and liability firm. In 2009, she accepted an invitation to join the Board of Directors of CASA OC, where she served for four years and volunteered as a member of the Holiday Luncheon Committee. In 2015, Regan joined the staff of CASA as Chief Program Officer. Regan was elevated to CEO position in December of 2017. Regan has spent most of her professional life performing work about which she is deeply passionate—advocating for children removed from their homes and separated from their families due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. “I have the greatest admiration and respect for the committed individuals who volunteer as Court Appointed Special Advocates and those who give so generously to ensure our organization may continue recruiting, training, and supporting those volunteers,” Regan says. Regan and her husband reside in North Tustin with their three children and a precocious animal that purports to be a “Bernedoodle,” but more closely resembles a Muppet.Episode 218Hosted by: Jeanne Pepper Guest: Regan PhillipsProducer: Eli Moskowitz Original Theme: Jay Bernstein Special Thank You to our volunteersFOLLOW or SUBSCRIBE to PeppTalks with JeanneFacebook: PeppTalks with Jeanne PepperInstagram: @pepptalkswithjeanneLinkedIn: Jeanne PepperDISCLAIMER Jeanne Pepper is providing this podcast as a public service. PeppTalks with Jeanne Pepper Ep 217 Tahera Christy amour propre
I first met Tahera at a “Blaze it Forward” event in Foothill Ranch when she came to support our family during a cleanup at the memorial park there. I was immediately interested in this self styled lifestyle “guru” who sings, writes books, raises kids, does public speaking, podcasts and finds time to run her health and wellness business. Tahera is an energetic mother of four and married to her high school sweetheart. She talks about her life and what brought her from her home in Oakland, California to Mission Viejo, California. Her company, Amour Propre, which means“Self-Love”in French, is a wellness and beauty brand centered in self-love, enhanced by science, inspired by nature and fueled by positive energy. She was inspired to create Amour Propre because she saw the decline of kindness and connectivity in society. She believes that if society is to come together, we must rediscover the art of loving our neighbors as ourselves. Out of a radical self-love movement can come a powerful community kindness initiative. Tahera is a sought out and renowned life coach and relationship expert. She is the host of a popular podcast called, Filter Free with Tahera Rene Christy. Available on Spotify, Apple iTunes, Amazon Music, Soundcloud and YouTube. She talks about various topics and centers them around relationships with self, family, friends and business. Tahera's self-published and released her debut album, Just Let Me in 2019, featuring 14 self-written, produced and sang by her and her team of musicians (Amazon). She developed her love for entertainment and her desire to motivate people towards success while attending a performing arts high school. Tahera received her degrees in Communication and Music from the California State University in Long Beach, where she emphasized the study of Rhetoric and Vocal Jazz. She resides in Orange County with her supportive husband, Kevin, a drummer who shares her love for music. Together, they have three children, three grandsons, and a high-maintenance cat who rules their household. As a singer herself, Valerie brings a lifelong love of performance and an unwavering can-do attitude to everything she does.
