Progress is not flourishing
We shouldn't confuse progress for human flourishing. We shouldn't confuse drug discovery with wholesome healing. We shouldn't confuse instant connectivity with meaningful and deep connection. We shouldn't confuse access with trust and what empathy creates. We shouldn't confuse making things easier with making them better. We've become more connected than ever before, and more distant from one another. We continue to create new jobs that didn't exist a decade ago, and less people are engaged at work. We have an abundance of information, and a lot of people are still confused about what to do next. We have access to more data points in the history of the human species and fewer applications of wisdom.By all account, we are making progress. And we can equally flourish when we start paying more attention to it.Read along at www.bydamo.la/progressflourishing This is a public episode. The good old days
The past is the past. We can be grateful it happened. More than that, we can be grateful we all built on it to be where we are today. The job of the past is to become something that can be built upon. Talk is cheap
Most people talk to fill silence. Don't be most people. Talk to create meaning. Convert your words into forms you find useful. Audio, text, signwriting, visuals or video. Translate across languages and contexts.Human history has a collection of moments where talking moved us forward. We still do today; we talk ourselves into taking action that move us forward. Talking is no substitute for taking action. Instead, it propels it. Clear communication precedes every major accomplishment.Talk is cheap. But cheap isn't the same as not valuable. It's not expensive. Instead, it's undervalued. Meaningful and intentional talk? That's priceless.Read along at www.bydamo.la/talk This is a public episode. There’s art in everything
Everywhere you look, you’ll find art. If you choose to.Some beautiful. Some mundane. Some well-thought out, some haphazard. Some celebrated. Some unknown and unknowable. On the will of the will
Honouring the wishes of the dead has been a long-lasting part of the human culture. Even when those wishes don't make sense.Love trumps fear. Creating a family culture that focuses on what truly matters is better than leaving things to chance. The way appears where there is a will. The innovation list
List three things you did last week that didn’t work.List three thoughts you had last week that seem embarrassing, but may make the lives of those you serve better if it works.List three things you tried last week that shouldn’t work, but did.List three things you tried last week that, as expected, worked. The last one is what most organisations request in meetings and reports. A retell of what we knew was going to work. Same old. Same old.If you don’t have answers for the first three, it may be a good time to reassess your approach to making what you do better.Better is always an option. And it’s often hidden in trying what might not work.Read at www.bydamo.la/innovationlist This is a public episode. Meucci error ≠ sunk cost
Meucci error is when a project fails because you didn’t dedicate enough resource to it. You knew what you had to do, but either didn’t or couldn’t do it.On the other end, death by sunk cost is when you decide to withdraw further resource from a project. In both cases, the project doesn't get further resources. The first isn’t due to a decision you consciously made. But the second is up to you.Let’s take a step back for context and learn about the Meucci gap.Read the full piece at www.bydamo.la/meucci This is a public episode. The essential can’t be done for you
If it can only be done by you, for yourself, it is essential. For it to work, no one can else do it for you.No one can breathe on your behalf. No one can nurture your trust in love, your embrace of acceptance, your walk in kindness. No one can find and experience rest for you. Neither can they sleep on your behalf. No one can choose what kind of life you should live. They can set the scene, put incentives in place, and tell stories to make you choose. But the act of deciding who to be in the world? The choice of living the way you believe is just? That’s on you.It is easy to get busy with many things to do. The core thing to remember is what’s essentially yours to do.Read the full piece at www.bydamo.la/essential This is a public episode.
