Feed your family or feed your soul? This is the question so many children of immigrants come across as they enter adolescence and adulthood. In this episode, the Primas invite a special guest - their prima, Janet, a recent graduate degree in Clinical Counseling to discuss this very complex balancing act for self-actualization while abiding by cultural/familial expectations.

Facing Discrimination: "Ni de Aqui, Ni de Alla"

In this episode las Primas take us back to early starts of the formal immigration system in the United States. They unveil how U.S. intervention for its own interests cause the increase of immigration from other countries - specifically from Central and South America. The main point of this episode is to bring awareness to listeners about the long lived history of discrimination LatinX folks face in this county. A discrimination that continues to be seen in formal educations systems today.

Navigating hobbies as BIPOC can be difficult - from navigating cultural expectations, to managing time, and entering spaces where others do not look like us. Yaneli and Lasley from the Sisters Run Club join the Primas this week to talk about their journey in not only navigating running as hobby as Latinas, but also building a running community for a lot of people.

Best Practices for Fight or Flight in Children of Immigrants

In this episode the Primas have a dialogue about how to challenge our Fight or Flight feelings through a variation of best practices. We also welcome our 1st ever guest speaker to the Ponle Acento Podcast, Lilia Pulido Fernandez! As an elementary school educator, Fernandez has worked with a student population who for the most part are also children of immigrants like herself. Fernandez's observations led to learn a new coping skill for herself and others! The coping skills, really a life skill - is intentional breathing!

Fight or Flight in Children of Immigrants

Children of immigrants are often challenged by high functioning anxiety. Is this anxiety caused by the pressure of not failing your family? Is it the pressure brought by maturing at an earlier age? Maybe it was the translating and interpreting for our parent/s at the age of 7? Or maybe it is the generational trauma we carry in our genes? Actually - it might be all of the above.
