You know, it's an interesting experience doing the voice of a character that you absolutely despise. Man, this has been a brutal week for me emotionally. I've been overwhelmed with anxiety in my down time and have been coming home from work and just going to bed. And we're back! I want to say thank you to everyone who is still listening to the audiobook, it really means a lot to have people care about the work I put out and the effort that goes into this. I've had a lot going on in my life, been very stressed, but worst of all I got sick with something that has made my voice hurt and my throat and sinuses stuffy for the last month and a half or so! You might be able to notice it, I actually recorded this chapter on like 4 different days because of the state of my voice. It's subtle, but you can kinda tell when I left for a few days and came back just from how the mic sounds. GAH! I have been so dang busy with work, I've been working basically 7 days a week for the last couple months. But I have now quit that job and intend to make regular uploads again! Fun fact, turns out I have some pretty significant dyslexia! If you aren't familiar with dyslexia, effectively it means my brain has trouble processing letters, which makes reading hard! I got tested recently and scored something like a 35/50, putting me in the "severe" range. After getting the test I told the doctor that I narrate audiobooks and they gaped at me, I guess people who have a visual impairment don't normally take on work that is 100% reading based haha. Normally dyslexia would be caught at a young age, but I never got tested because despite reading slow I always did really well in school. I read about as fast out loud as I do in my head, and frequently will have to re-read things a few times to retain it. It's very frustrating, and as a result I don't read books very frequently these days. This shows up in the audiobook as the occasional messed up word or wrong name, however behind the scenes in this chapter alone I edited out around 220 flubbed lines. It really adds up! On the bright side, I've been prescribed some specialty glasses to help with dyslexia, when I get those in a few weeks I may find reading easier than it's ever been, wouldn't that be novel! I'm also currently working a temp job that is taking up most my time. I have mandatory overtime pretty much every weekend, so finding time to record has been a challenge. I should be done with this job some time next month though, so soon I'll have proper audiobook time again (I hope). I'm also not convinced anyone reads these descriptions, if you actually read this far leave a comment calling me four eyes or making fun of the narrator that can't even read or something, I'd get a kick out of that. I had a lot of fun recording this chapter, hopefully the leveling is ok for all the yelling. Normally when you're recording lines, if you're going to be shouting a lot you would turn down your gain so that you don't have any peaking, and when you're talking at a regular volume you would have it at a higher gain. The problem with recording something long like an audiobook is that it isn't practical to change the gain throughout because it would add a lot of time to the recording and editing processes. So because of that when there is a lot of yelling like this you may hear some peaking because I don't have the time that adjusting the gain every couple of lines would require as I'm doing this entire audiobook in my free time (which is very strained at the moment) and entirely for free. I've been having issues with my throat for a couple weeks now and it's making it hard to record. At first it was from a food I ate and had a reaction to, then while recovering from that I got sick which just made my throat hurt more. So while recording this chapter I had to take a lot of breaks to let my voice recover so that I wouldn't sound hoarse. It's also why I missed the Wednesday upload for the last two weeks. Anyway, I'm mostly better now so I should hopefully be able to record like normal again in the coming week, which is good because chapter 60 is going to be around 2 and a half hours long!
