Hi! We are Ragman’s Harbour, the official podcast of the Planetosi Exchange Programme, a new podcast dedicated to discussing real-life historical and cultural parallels to ASOIAF, from a non-Anglo perspective. Because we, Virginie and Lo, come from non-English speaking countries although we use English as our common language

Bonus episode - preview of holidays of ASOIAF
Welcome to this bonus episode! As mentioned in the episode, life has conspired against us managing to find time to record, so in the meanwhile here is a shorter episode with just Lo. This is also a preview of sorts of the episode we have coming up, where we will discuss what holidays exist (and should exist) in ASOIAF. In this episode Lo discusses Valborg/Walpurgis night, and end up discussing May 1st as well. And why Westeros should have a spring festival! You can contact us at: [email protected] BlueSky Instagram Thank you to Matt Graham for the theme music with sounds from zapsplat.com! If you want to see videos of the singing promised by Lo, check out these videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmoLQ5JrfHk&list=RDcmoLQ5JrfHk&start_radio=1 (children's choir singing songs you often hear at Valborg) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTmYi8oMxjY&list=RDLTmYi8oMxjY&start_radio=1 (smaller choir singing at an actual Valborg celebration) If you're curious about the rafting in Uppsala during Valborg, here are two videos about that: https://youtu.be/sZ2YcMrPHq0?is=GItRbhvRKSF1kyy8 (rafting in Uppsala during Valborg) https://www.instagram.com/reel/DXwLEeeo_6J/?igsh=aGtzcTg2Z2FyODFk Other references and sources: https://www.isof.se/utforska/kunskapsbanker/lar-dig-mer-om-arets-namn-och-handelser/handelser/valborgsmassoafton https://www.nordiskamuseet.se/utforska/hogtider/valborgsmassoafton/ https://www.so-rummet.se/fakta-artiklar/historien-bakom-valborgsfirandet-och-forsta-maj# https://www.etc.se/inrikes/aer-valborg-ett-borgerligt-paahitt

AKOT7K wrap-up w/ Vendela
In this episode we wrap up our coverage of season one of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and discuss what we thought about the season as a whole. We're also joined by Lo's friend Vendela, who hasn't read the books, to get her perspective on the show! So if you've ever wondered what a show-only-fan might think of Dunk & Egg, tune in! We also return to our himbo-ranking (by popular demand) and discuss important topics such as Maekar's orange cat energy and how thicc Raymun is. Tell your friends and leave us a flurry of stars and a review wherever you listen to this episode. <3 You can also join us on Patreon and support our work + get some LOTR virgin read through reaction episodes in your ears (and even go as far as save the world!) AKOT7(9)K - little monsters
What used to be a bonus episode is now public -enjoy! And now we say good bye to our boys for some time, as they go away on adventures we won't join in until season 2 :( We liked this episode, although we of course have a couple complains but over all, that's really minor. We got some feel good moments, some haha moments, some teary-eyed moments, some easter eggs, some social justice, some teenage girl thinks, some unabashed himboism, a happy horse, a mystery brain thing from Lo and I both, wow, and we even get to learn about sheep and funerals while alive. AKOT7K S1E5 - Sh*t happens
What used to be a bonus episode is now public -enjoy! The trial of Seven that was promised... Let's say one thing: it happened. I also want to give another tribute here to the best (and most upsetting) Books!Daario Naharis homage we'll ever get: Humphrey Beesbury deserved better ! Also, Daeron knew what was up (poor bb, give this sexy man a ticket to rehab) You can become one of the cool kittens on Patreon and support our work + get some LOTR virgin read through reaction episodes in your ears (and even go as far as save the world!) AKOT7K S1E4 - "Honor is a horse"
What used to be a bonus episode is now public -enjoy! As I type this, I realise it may be worth it to point out that this episode titled « Seven » is very much not a remake of the movie with Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow. Just a head's up. So, here we are: Baelor nudges Dunk towards a trial by combat, but little jackass Aerion outsmarts him and requires a trial by seven. So now, Dunk has to assemble his team. He only has his squire, Prince Egg, and the honour [cough cough] of Ser Steffon Fossoway to help him get the crew together, and defend his, well, life -and the values of true knighthood: to protect the weak and innocent. We may or may not get emotional, and may or may not tell you about how we watched this episode, and another time one of us watched an episode and cried a lot (even more than today, just before hitting record) Anyway, as always, let us know what you think, here or on social media, we love getting your feedback and extra commentary. AKOT7K S1E3 - The egg cracks open
What used to be a bonus episode is now public -enjoy! We loved this episode, and of course, Virginie loves pointing out flaws as per her usual Parisianness, but fortunately Lo is here to counteract with music (you'll hear a clip of the murderer's song at the end of the episode, and can check out the whole thing out here) As per always we give you our best and if a few times it feels like Virginie is saying the wrong name or uses grammar very liberally, she has a good reason (fibromyalgia) Keep your comments coming, they keep us fuelled for what's coming now that Dunk is in big trouble for being a big strong women respecting kind himbo with the energy of a golden retriever and very much of an orange cat. AKOT7K S1E2 - Welcome to Himboland
What used to be a bonus episode is now public -enjoy! We get to say "himbo" one thousand times and if Egg knew the word, he probably would, too. Let us see why, and also talk about classism, characterisation of new people, things we didn't need to see, foul language and so on and so forth of all the good stuff (and some of the not as great, too) You can become one of the cool kittens on Patreon and support our work + get some LOTR virgin read through reaction episodes in your ears (and even go as far as save the world!) Harbour reader's e - Are there no himbos among you?
In preperation for the new tv-show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we present you a very scientific examination of himbos in ASOIAF. Spoiler alert: our boy Dunk (thicc as a castle wall) ranks highly. Join us as we discuss what exactly constitutes a himbo, and talk about characters ranging from Qarl the Maid to Grenn and Gendry. As well as some who are absolutely not himbos, even if they fit some criteria... If you want to follow along with the ranking, here's the himbo ranking in full: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FsXoYDkqeZ9U8Js95UC9-2kmUs61bbdW/view?usp=drive_link If you want to do your own ranking, here's a file you can download and fill out yourself: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xTbyax4x2jCFNOVNXVlEKeWIZqdZUyG4rgvOkgzuRuQ/edit?usp=drive_link As mentioned in the episode - during the duration of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we'll put out episodes discussion each episode for patreons. 23 -All the Brandons, saints. And convenient visions + boobies
In this episode we take you on a journey to meet very real people (à la Brandon Starks if he were a king or a hunter) who are saints and actual people who are saints (with or without boobies and visions) with a bonus festive saint and singing (no fire was started in the making of this episode). We manage to parallel Septon Meribald and Gregor Clegan (and bonus Oedipus!) to the same saint, and also talk Pretty Meris, Melisandre, Mother Mole, Baelor the Blessed, Jeyne Poole and more. We even throw in how Valyria could have avoided the Doom. And cakes that are boob-shaped. Join us on this trip and make this shortest day of the year if you're in the Northern Hemisphere longer (and bring extra light to it if you're in the Southern Hemisphere, and some cold because these candles are in Sweden) Tell your friends and maybe your racist uncle who needs to be reminded borders are fake about us and leave us a flurry of stars and a review wherever you listen to this episode <3 You can also join us on Patreon and support our work + get some LOTR virgin read through reaction episodes in your ears (and even go as far as save the world!) 22 - A Storm of Genders
In this episode we talk about gender nonconforming people throughout history, and ASOIAF. We cover everyone from Joan of Arc, genderqueer Viking era people, possible trans saints, and a Polish gender criminal (of sorts). And we compare them to characters like Brienne of Tarth, Morna White Mask, Alleras the Sphinx, Arya Stark, Brave Danny Flint, and more. Join us as we discuss how the gender binary is fake and heteronormativity is bullshit! 21- More blood on the shadows
In this episode, your hosts take you once more to the delightful (or not) realm of political deaths. Some of them just stop being alive, some are murdered, some experience chop chop, but all men must die -kings, princes who are also kings, men who used to be kings, people who got rid of kings, people who didn't want to get rid of kings, people who are not monarchs too. Also, Virginie needs to come clean: she said "kings" were banned from the streets of Paris but she meant "pigs" 😅 (also, as her voice testifies, she was sick and deserves a break. Same for that time she forgets a key word in a sentence but it still makes sense) Tell your friends and even your enemies about this episode in real life and on social media, and if you liked what you hear, leave us a firework of stars and rave about us in a review on your podcast app of choice. Also, check out our Patreon! Virginie reads LOTR for the first time and is currently finding Jesus, you do not* want to miss it! (*or maybe you do) (up to you!) You can contact us at: [email protected] BlueSky Thank you to Matt Graham for the theme music with sounds from zapsplat.com! Harbour's Reader d- Wyman Manderly
In this episode, we talk about one of our absolute favourite characters: Wyman Manderly. We analyse where he and his family stand in the North, how he is perceived and how he uses that, his sense of ethics, why we love him in spite of some... less savoury bits and we finally get to share artwork by the fantastic Hanieh @dr3adlady.bsky.social (We'll share it on social media and on our Patreon, on a public post like all our public episodes) We also talk about some of the cast around him and we have a great time doing all that! 20 - A Storm of Cultures - feat Ray
In this episode, your hosts and guest Ray, discuss what happens when different cultures meet, in ASOIAF and irl. We discuss migration, culture clashes, prejudice, racism, colonialism, and more! Along the way we conclude that both Viserys Targaryen and Jorah Mormont are the worst (albeit in different ways), and that the Free Folk makes a good parallel to climate refugees. We also chat with our guest about his journey through both the ASOIAF fandom and life in general! Harbour's reader c -sigils as storytelling
In this third episode of our series looking at the books, actually, we look at a neat trick GRRM uses for subtle storytelling: the blasons/sigils of the main Houses of the North, through the prism of semiotics -and specifically, the tools developed by the researcher, Greimas. You don't know what semiotics are? Fair enough! Let us explain that it's the study of signs and symbols, and how they are used to create meaning, tell stories, communicate ideas. And that GRRM provides the keen-eyed reader with a prime example of how to use images well <3 We hope you like this episode as much as we enjoyed nerding out and making it! All men - and people in general - must die, but what happens afterwards? In this episode we discuss understandings of death, burial rituals, and the afterlife in ASOIAF and real life! Join us to learn about how the pop culture understanding of "Viking funerals" is somewhat inaccurate, but also how funeral processions for kings and nobles in ASOIAF are far less extra than they were in real-life France. Harbour's Reader b- Brienne of Tarth
In this second episode of our series looking at the books, in an extremely shocking twist of event (not), we are analysing Brienne! We're talking gender, the patriarchy, transphobia, toxic gender norms, heresy and Podrick Payne, Hyle Hunt and Jaime Lannister get a mention. So do Cercei and Catelyn, for different reasons. Ep 18_a Feast of Food- feat Abi
Your hosts and guest Abi ( @szegfu.bsky.social ) take you on a trip around the world and across time to learn more about George's favourite topic, probably: food! We discuss having to adapt to a new food culture in real life, like Catelyn and Tyrion as well as Areo Hotah and Ser Arys do in the books, what people eat in the North(s), what spices were found in medieval European kitchens, how to preserve food when you don't have a fridge or an ice cell (or even if you have one), how to recreate Joffrey's wedding feast but make it actually extravagant and how amazing it is to learn Hungarian with curses. the Harbour's reader -a: Tormund
We debute a new episode series, all about, who could have predicted: ASOIAF. Like, actually, the books/ shows and not historical parallels. In this first episode, we talk about the greatest leader possibly ever, and certainly, a speaker for GRRM's pet project (to finish off the work JRR Tolkien left pending, something something genocide of baby orcs and tax policy): Tormund. If you've only watched the show and are confused about the previous statement (or if you have read the books and are confused about the previous statement), worry not: we contextualise everything we analyse. As this is the first episode of this kind for us, please let us know what you think, it's quite precious! 16- Make Westeros Great Again --political recuperation of medievalism
We take you on a trip to discover how fascists in our world and Westeros use what they like in the Middle Ages, pick and choose and lump it all together and bam! have lovely (or not) symbols to show and things to say to justify their hatred and actions. In this episode, your hosts take you on a trip all the way to the Early Middle Ages and back, to discuss queens of France and Sweden -a couple each, no one is jealous! And also Cercei, a lot. Somehow. And ask the real question: is Catelyn the most medieval character of ASOIAF? Tell your friends and even your enemies about this episode, and if you liked what you hear, leave us a firework of stars and rave about us in a review on your podcast app of choice. Also, check out our Patreon where our first actual bonus episode drops in a couple of days! Virginie reads the first chapters of LOTR for the first time, you do not* want to miss it! Bonus 1 - LOTR Book Club - prologue
This is but a taste of what is to come on our Patreon! In this bonus episode, one of your hosts discovers the prologue of the Fellowship of the Ring as she ventures into reading the Lord of the Rings for the first time. Sometimes, your other host represses a remark so there is suspense: what went wrong? Please don't spoil her: Your newbie host is curious and thrilled! She looks not only at the meta analysis and the story told, but also at the anthropological and linguistic elements provided in the prologue, and questions whether Tolkien was messing with both anthropologists and historical linguists. She thinks yes. It's fun! The Orcs of Winterfell get mentioned, as well as Terry Pratchett's Discworld series and a Disney Documentary on dwarves. French medievalist Vincent Ferré, whose incredible work can be found here is saluted (and Virginie looks forward to finally be able to read his most famous works when she's completed her read-through) As always, feel free to write to us on Bluesky, Instagram or send us an email: it's @ RagmansPod everywhere. Ep 13 "Oh the banners!": of sigils and heraldry
In this episode, your hosts take you on a journey to medieval and not so medieval Europe to explore the rich world of heraldry to compare it to its Westeros counterpart: sigils. Who gets to have a coat of arms? How to pick your doodle? What are the rules? Are imaginary coat of arms a new thing? 09 Mini-episode: Movie recommendations!
During this HOT HotD season, we thought both our dear listeners and ourselves could use a break from just talking about the dragon show. So here is the first of three mini-episode where we recommend stuff to you all! In this episode we talk movies! Lo talked about, in chronological order: The Millenium movies, especially Män som hatar kvinnor/The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - by Niels Arden Oplev & Daniel Alfredson (the movie with a journalist and hacker trying to solve the 40 year old mystery of a missing girl, while also delving into social inequality in Sweden) Fucking Åmål/Show Me Love - by Lukas Moodysson (90s movie about two teenage girls falling in love in the small town Åmål) Portrait de la jeune fille en feu/Portrait of a Lady on Fire- by Céline Sciamma (the sapphic love story between a painter and a lady of the gentry in 18th century France. Gay and sad.) Virginie talked about, in chronological order: La vie est un long fleuve tranquille -by Etienne Chatilliez (the movie with switched babies that’s all about making fun of rich and catholic people because we think class humour is the best) Les Visiteurs -by Jean-Marie Poiré (the medievalist movie that’s absolutely not historically accurate but that we love to loathe -or just love- and makes fun of rich people because class humour is really our thing) La cité de la peur (le film des Nuls) by Alain Berberian (the movie that made me laugh when explaining its plot because the words “serial killer” are a joke in it but also, there’s a serial killer) Les trois frères -by Didier Bourdon & Bernard Campan (the movie that’s about three brothers who didn’t know they’re brothers, who find out when their biological mother dies and leaves them a supposedly large heirloom. It of course makes fun of rich people but not only that! In a cult scene, you may discover we had the Wheel of Fortune in France. You may also discover how… dangerous it is to drive while high on ecstasy. And so much more) You can contact us at: [email protected] Twitter/X BlueSky Thank you LittleWolfBird for the sound engineering, and thank you to Matt Graham for the theme music with sounds from zapsplat.com!

03 What’s in a name?
Today on the 26th of December, the Titan of Braavos brings you a gift: episode 3 of Ragman's Harbour! In our third episode, we discuss naming conventions in ASOIAF and our real world. How did last names come to be a thing in our world, and how does that parallel last names in ASOIAF? Why are there so many Aegons in ASOIAF history, as well as many Louis and Gustavs in French and Swedish history? (Spoiler: it has to do with one of Virginie's favourite words) We also discuss the effects of colonisation and slavery on the naming of people, both in ASOIAF and our own world. So get ready to learn all about names and what they say about norms and structures in society! 02 Of Scandals and Bastards
In our second episode, we dive into a variety of sex scandals and issues of inheritance, from our own world and ASOIAF. As we go along, we discuss what happens when royals have sex out of wedlock, but also what rights bastards have in various historical and cultural contexts. And much more. We want to give a brief apology for the audio quality in this episode. We had some issues when recording, that has since been identified and won't be a problem in future episodes. This is also the reason why this episode took a bit longer to come out. Thank you LittleWolfBird for helping us with audio engineering and making all sound as good as possible! 01 The Red Wedding and Other Bloodbaths
In our first episode, we thought we'd introduce the podcast project then explore some "light and fun" real life parallels to one of ASOIAF's most well known events. Sources and resources: From Lo: https://www.so-rummet.se/artikelserier/sturarna-och-bakgrunden-till-stockholms-blodbad https://www.so-rummet.se/fakta-artiklar/kalmarunionens-upplosning-gustav-vasa-tar-makten-i-sverige# https://stockholmskallan.stockholm.se/teman/stockholmshandelser/stockholms-blodbad-1520/ https://popularhistoria.se/sveriges-historia/stockholms-blodbad https://www.so-rummet.se/aret-runt/sten-sture-den-yngres-dod (The painting is of Sten Sture den Yngre dying as his men is trying to get him to Stockholm) Virginie adds: Johannes V. Jensen's Kongens Fald (the Fall of the King), elected best Danish novel of the 20thC, that covers this period of history. From Virginie: Tuer et Mourir au Nom de Dieu : a fantastic podcast series about the St Barthélémie season with many prominent historians, particularly Jérémie Foa -on whom I largely base my blurb Jérémie Foa's Tous ceux qui tombent book on the event Jérémie Foa's BD (comic book) on the event, and on how the movie La Reine Margot is not quite accurate La Reine Margot (Queen Margot) movie. Not really historically accurate, but it's with Isabelle Adjani
