    Perspectives from Staff in Academia

    On this week's episode of Raw Academia: Unfiltered and Real we discuss interactions of a staff member with the academic community. This week's special guest is Greg Bunton, who spent 45 years on the CSULB campus working as a staff member. He spent time in landscaping, grounds crews, Kinesiology staff, equipment room, and a little bit of everywhere else. During his time at CSULB, he’s had some good experiences, and some bad experiences. Today we’re going to explore the dynamic between the staff and how they really help keep the faculty afloat.

    Avoiding Burnout

    On kickoff episode for Season 2 of Raw Academia: Unfiltered and Real, Dr. Valenzuela and Dr. Boyer discuss tips on how to avoid burnout in your job. We discuss personal experiences in which burnout happened for us, what led to it, and what helped us rediscover the joy in our jobs to come out of that feeling of burnout.

    Student Evaluations

    On this week's episode, Dr. Valenzuela and Dr. Boyer discuss end of the semester student evaluations. Student evaluations are something EVERY faculty member must endure and we have had our fair share of both constructive feedback and some not-so-savory comments from students. We discuss some of the literature examining the effectiveness of students evaluations, our own experiences with them, and some advice on how to handle them.

    On today's episode, we talk about the wide world of student internships and the fun stories we hear regarding those (good and bad). Joining us today is Dr. Portia Resnick, an assistant professor in the masters of athletic training program at CSULB. She provides first hand experience and insight into how to handle internships and clinical sites with students.

    On today's episode we are going to deep dive into some personal stories and anecdotes of our experiences dealing with both the best and some not so savory people in academia. Egos are real but sometimes people forget to check them at the door. We are also going to discuss experiences that have impacted or changed us for the better and provide some insight on how to be kind in academia.

    On today’s episode, we revisit online education. Joining us on this episode is Dr. Amy Miller, Professor of Kinesiology at CBU. Dr. Miller is an expert in behavior change, health-related fitness and wellness with a background in health promotion and education. She also has extensive experience working in the online education world and provides an interesting take on her thoughts on this topic.

    On today's episode, Dr. Scott Lynn (Cal State Fullerton) joins us to provide insight into the differences between the academic world and the professional world for people with PhDs. He discusses his academic journey, finding balance between being a professor and being in the industry, working with professional sports teams, and gives advice on which direction might be best for someone.

    On today’s episode, Dr. Valenzuela and Dr. Boyer discuss the concept of Academic Integrity and what it means from the perspective of the student and the teacher. In general, when we think of Academic Integrity, we think of cheating. However, cheating, plagiarism, and academic dishonesty have significantly evolved over the years as technology has become so prevalent in our world.

    Parenting in Academia

    On today’s episode, we discuss concept of being a parent and being a professor at the same time; exploring how work life has changed after big changes in our personal lives: becoming dads. Also joining today are two special guests/friends/colleagues: Dr. Elizabeth (Lizzy) Taylor and Dr. Amanda Young, who will be able to provide the motherly perspective on parenting in academia.

    Expectations as a Professor

    On today’s episode, Dr. Boyer and Dr. Valenzuela discuss job expectations within academia, especially the unwritten ones. Job postings give you some insight into what the position will entail, but most job postings these days have something towards the end which says “other duties as assigned”, which can be quite vague.
