Face/Off Has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Something Is Wrong
Face/Off is one of the most beloved action movies of the 1990s. It also has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes — higher than John Wick, higher than Interstellar, and somehow higher than The Matrix.Marcel discovered this while rewatching it for Gun-Fu Month and immediately had an existential crisis. Danny didn't feel much better about it.This week on Reel Chums, we dig into John Woo's 1997 action spectacle starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage — two men, one face, and a premise so unhinged it was originally set in space. We talk about why the movie's bonkers concept is actually kind of genius, why the execution doesn't quite get there, what Cage was doing two years after winning his Oscar, the missed opportunity at the heart of the identity theme, and why — despite everything — this movie is absolutely ripe for a remake. We even cast it. Paramount, call us.Does Face/Off deserve its legendary status? We love movies. We watched this one. We have thoughts.Next week: we continue Gun-Fu Month with Steven Soderbergh's Haywire.📹 Follow us on socials:Reel Chums Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reelchums/Danny's Instagram: @rubio.tvMarcel's Instagram: @marztrosityReel Chums Threads: @reelchumsHave something to say? Brazil (1985) Is More Relevant Now Than Ever — Here's Why
Terry Gilliam's Brazil is one of the strangest, funniest, and most unsettling dystopian films ever made — and it's never felt more relevant. This week, Danny and Marcel close out Dystopian Film Month with the 1985 masterpiece, and they have a lot to say.In this episode: the retrofuturistic production design that still holds up 40 years later, Jonathan Pryce's quietly devastating performance as Sam Lowry, and why the Tom Cruise/Madonna alternate casting almost happened. Danny and Marcel dig into what makes Sam such a fascinating (and frustrating) protagonist — a man who'd rather fly through his dreams than face the world around him — and debate whether the government's "terrorist threat" is even real. They also get into Gilliam's use of dark comedy to expose consumerism, bureaucratic absurdity, and the horror of willful apathy: the "I'm on my lunch break" scene hits very differently in 2025.The Question of the Day: Have you ever had a recurring dream?Next week: Reel Chums kicks off Gun-Fu Month.📹 Follow us on socials:Reel Chums Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reelchums/Danny's Instagram: @rubio_tvMarcel's Instagram: @marztrosityReel Chums Threads: @reelchumsHave something to say? V for Vendetta — Hero, Terrorist, or Revolutionary?
This week, we revisit V for Vendetta (2006) and ask the big question: is V a hero, a terrorist, or something in between? We explore the film’s themes of fear, freedom, identity, and revolution — and why its political message feels even more relevant nearly 20 years later. We also break down Hugo Weaving’s iconic performance behind the mask, Natalie Portman’s powerful character arc, and the filmmaking choices that elevate the story from comic adaptation to cultural phenomenon. Children of Men Predicted 2025 (And We Weren't Ready)
In this episode, we discuss and review Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men. We break down one of the most technically ambitious films of the 21st century — a dystopian thriller that feels less like science fiction and more like a warning. We dig into Cuarón's career trajectory and why this film's box office disappointment may have permanently changed the kinds of stories he's willing to tell. We explore the film's masterful approach to exposition, Clive Owen's quietly devastating performance as the apathetic-turned-heroic Theo, and how the documentary-style cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki puts you inside the panic rather than just watching it. We also unpack the film's heavy themes — immigration, nationalism, apathy, and what it means to hold onto hope in a world that's given up — and why Cuarón himself said he wasn't predicting the future, just paying attention. And of course, we break down the technical wizardry behind the film's legendary long takes, including how the car ambush scene and the Bexhill battle sequence were actually pulled off. Does the ending offer real hope, or just a flicker of it? And what does it mean to be the one person who does something?📹 Follow us on socials for updates and more:Reel Chums Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reelchums/Danny's Instagram: @rubio_tvMarcel's Instagram: @marztrosityReel Chums Twitter: https://twitter.com/ReelChumsHave something to say or a burning question? The Hunger Games Is Frustrating to Love | Reel Chums
In this episode, we kick off our month of dystopian films with Gary Ross's The Hunger Games. We break down what might be the ultimate "we know it's gonna be good but we don't know it's gonna be good" studio movie — a film with a great first hour that struggles to maintain that energy once the games actually begin. We dig into why the script fails Katniss and Peeta in the arena, what it means for a protagonist to have agency versus just being reactionary, and how the limited budget both helped and hurt the final product. We also explore Danny's breakdown of handheld vs. shaky cam and why the distinction matters, Jennifer Lawrence's ability to have chemistry with anyone, the genius of Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, the decision to strip the score during key moments, and why the theme of hope — and the power of symbols — feels more relevant now than ever.Does the first hour carry the whole film? Is Katniss a character with real agency here? And are we slowly sliding into a dystopian novel ourselves?Let's talk The Hunger Games.Join us next week as we continue dystopian month with Children of Men.

We Can't Stop Talking About One Battle After Another
This week we're diving into Paul Thomas Anderson's latest masterpiece, One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn. This film is a technical marvel and storytelling triumph that balances intense action with surprising comedy and heart. We kick things off with a hot take about the Oscar nominations (spoiler: we're not mourning Wicked's absence), then spend the rest of the episode unpacking everything that makes this film special. From PTA's bold decision to spend over 30 minutes establishing the backstory before jumping 16 years forward, to the incredible underground railroad sequence that humanizes every character while building tension, this movie fires on all cylinders. We discuss Leo's comedic timing ("All you got is nunchucks in here?"), The absurdist brilliance of Perfidia and Lockjaw's power dynamics, and how PTA captures moments that feel painfully real—like conversations with people who are blatantly racist but completely unaware of it. The cinematography is phenomenal, the editing is tight, and the emotional impact builds from start to finish. This is a film we'll be returning to annually. Whether you're into action, comedy, character work, or just want to see what happens when a master filmmaker gets a big budget and total creative freedom, One Battle After Another delivers. We dive into whether the film’s marketing helped or hurt audience expectations, why Marty is intentionally unlikeable, and how the movie subverts the traditional “rags-to-riches” sports narrative. We also explore the film’s bold ending, Chalamet’s Oscar-worthy performance, Safdie’s unconventional casting choices, the use of anachronistic music, and why Marty Supreme may ultimately be about fame — not ping pong.Is the ending hopeful? Sinners: Duality, Blues, and Choosing Your Path
Signup for our newsletter: https://reelchums.com/newsletterWhat an incredible conversation this was. We are kicking off our month of thrillers with Ryan Coogler's *Sinners*, and honestly, this film reignited why we started this podcast in the first place.Danny retells his first time viewing the movie in a hospital room after his wife gave birth - he had just caught their baby that morning. Sitting there on that terrible couch, watching this film about legacy, life, and the duality of man while holding his newborn... it hit different. That viewing experience was special in its own way. This movie is a masterpiece. The way Coogler uses 70mm IMAX, the richness of the blues music, the powerful themes about cultural appropriation, religious oppression, and what it means to choose your own path - it's all here. Michael B. Jordan playing both Smoke and Stack is phenomenal, and Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim deserves all the awards. We talk about why this vampire film barely has vampires for the first hour, the importance of the blues to this story, and how Coogler uses duality throughout - from the twin protagonists to the conflict between conformity and individualism. Spider-Man No Way Home | Nostalgia vs Story, and Completing the Origin We Never Knew We Needed
Signup for our newsletter: https://reelchums.com/newsletterWe're wrapping up our MCU Spider-Man trilogy discussion with an in-depth analysis of "Spider-Man: No Way Home." Four years after its release, Marcel and I examine how this multiverse spectacle works as both a satisfying conclusion to Tom Holland's origin story and a product of its pandemic-era production challenges. We dive deep into the film's themes of identity, choice, and responsibility, discussing how the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield creates powerful moments of nostalgia and redemption. From Willem Dafoe's menacing Green Goblin to that heartbreaking Aunt May scene, we break down what makes this movie work despite feeling "stitched together" at times. We also explore the bigger questions: When does nostalgia serve the story versus just appeasing fans? How do we balance fate versus choice in superhero narratives? And what does it mean to be Peter Parker when no one remembers who you are?Plus, Marcel shares his theater rental story (sorry Danny!), we debate our favorite Spider-Man actors and costumes, and get emotional about Alfred Molina's return as Doc Ock. Whether you're team Garfield, Maguire, or Holland, this episode celebrates what makes Spider-Man's story so enduringly powerful - even when the multiverse gets a little messy.📹 Follow us on socials for updates and more:Reel Chums Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reelchums/Rubio's Twitter: https://twitter.com/Rubio_tvMarcel's Twitter: https://twitter.com/marztrosityReel Chums Twitter: https://twitter.com/ReelChumsDo you have something to say, a burning question about this, or any other episodes? They suggest the film would work excellently as a limited series, allowing more time to develop the various character perspectives.Question of the Day: Best journalism movies - Marcel recommends Good Night and Good Luck, Danny suggests All the President's MenThe hosts are transitioning from disaster films to a rewatch of the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy while they work on securing guests for their next themed series.📹 Follow us on socials for updates and more:Reel Chums Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reelchums/Rubio's Twitter: https://twitter.com/Rubio_tvMarcel's Twitter: https://twitter.com/marztrosityReel Chums Twitter: https://twitter.com/ReelChumsDo you have something to say, a burning question about this, or any other episodes?
