Responding to the Riots: Birmingham Voices

Last year, following the summer’s far-right riots across the country, we came together in online spaces and in person to share our feelings, the impact of the riots and talk about what actions should be taken to mitigate recurrence of such events.Since then we have seen increased opposition to the far-right in public, we have seen communities come together to stand up for each other and against hate. We have seen how people who spread division and hostility can be held accountable, but we have also seen negative rhetoric continue as well as inflammatory actions and hostilities against migrants.We have seen politicians and the media continue to spread false and divisive disinformation about migrants. We have seen violence erupt within communities, such as riots and bonfires in Northern Ireland.It is more important than ever that we show the strength in our diversity, the power of our solidarity, and that as a community we stand together.
