Rethinking Our History

In this new weekly show from the host of The Paranormal Lovers we take a look at some of histories less well known events. Why are they less well known? Because " History is written by the victors." So we are here to look at the other side of the story, and to give people a starting point to learn about the true history of this country.

Episode 68: The Crusades Part 2:

Send us Fan MailWhen we last left the crusades both of the main leaders of the warring parties have died. And of course there is a power struggle before we get new leaders who also set about planning their own crusades. Follow along as we meet new champions and villains, and you can choose who you think the real villains are in this lesson.  ROH EP 68 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusadeshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sack_of_Constantinoplehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_Crusade

Episode 67: The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire:

Send us Fan MailWe will be back in one week with our continuance of our look at the Crusades but this week we are going to look at an event that took place over a hundred years ago, but changed the way people did business forever. At the turn of the century it was common to find sweatshops that employed hundreds of immigrants to make products; for little pay in terrible conditions. At the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory they took things a step further and locked the doors leaving only one exit so that they could inspect bags as employees were leaving for the day. And so, on March 25th 1911, over 400 workers found themselves in these conditions when a fire broke out on the 8th floor. With no fire alarms, smoke detectors, or sprinklers the employees were trapped high above the street with no way to escape.  ROH EP 67 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle_Shirtwaist_Factory_firehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirtwaisthttps://rememberthetrianglefire.org/https://www.history.com/articles/triangle-shirtwaist-firehttps://www.nfpa.org/news-blogs-and-articles/blogs/2024/03/01/the-triangle-shirtwaist-factory-fire-of-1911https://rememberthetrianglefire.org/memorial/

Episode 66: The Crusades Part 1:

Send us Fan MailWe are going way back in time this week, even further than the Ottoman Empire, to look at a series of events that we all know about, but probably know very little about. Christianity and Islam have been large players in the religious world for thousands of years. The Pope has been the leader of one of those religions for almost as long, and through him wars have been raged in their gods name. Things really kick off in the 11th century as these two huge forces fought for what they felt their religion entitled them too.  ROH EP 66 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusadeshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_war_theoryhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusade_of_1101

    Episode 65: Eric Rudolph:

Send us Fan MailWe are taking a look at the case of a man who terrorized the nation, and our little slice of heaven, for years. Fueled by white supremacy, a hatred of socialism and abortions, Eric Rudolph set off several bombs, starting at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta GA. Even after 5 years of a federal man hunt, it was a local rookie cop from right here in Appalachia that would be the one to arrest the Olympic Park Bomber.  ROH EP 65 Source Notes:https://www.churchofisrael.org/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Rudolph

Rerelease: Episode 54: Missing in Arizona: Daniel Robinson:

Send us Fan MailWe took a little trip this past weekend and did not record so we decided to rerelease one of our more important episode. Imagine getting a phone call that your 24 year old child did not return to their jobsite out in the Arizona desert. And then imagine getting told that your child is an adult and can disappear into the desert if they want too. That is what David Robinson had to deal with the summer of 2021 when his son Daniel went missing from his job in Tempe Arizona. The Buckeye Police Department did not want to deal with a missing young adult, especially not a missing young black man. David drove from his SC home all the way to Arizona to look for his son himself. A search he has not given up although there have been few to no leads in the 4+ years since Daniel disappeared. What make it even harder is when a pretty young white girl goes missing Daniel gets pushed aside. This is some thing Joe Petito, Gabby Petito's father has been fighting against, even as he is along side David helping him look for his son. If you know anything about what happened to Daniel Robinson in June of 2021 please contact the Buckeye Police Department at 623 349 6400. Send us Fan MailThis week we go through the last part of the regain of the Ottoman Empire. At their height they had over 30 million people under their rule. But in the late 1700's the might of the Empire began to fall. Over the next couple of centuries the border of the empire fluxed, with wars raging on almost all sides. When the 20th century came around, citizens of this once great empire found themselves seeking a change in guard. ROH EP 63 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empirehttps://www.academia.edu/1391739/The_Habsburg_Defense_System_in_Hungary_Against_the_Ottomans_in_Sixteenth_Century_A_Catalyst_of_Military_Development_in_Central_Europe_In_Warfare_in_Eastern_Europe_1500_1800_Ed_Brian_J_Davies_Leiden_Boston_Brill_2012_History_of_Warfare_72_p_35_61

Episode 62: The Ottoman Empire Part 1:

Send us Fan MailWe wanted to take a look at an Empire that most of us have heard of but probably do not know much about, the Ottoman Empire. Beginning in 1299 and lasting until the early 1900's, this Empire rule vast portions of different countries across different continents. They were brutal in their attacks and left no one to rebuilt, you were either killed or take into slavery. If another empire was large enough to defend itself, you were either useful to the Ottomans, or you were an enemy to be defeated, there was no in between. ROH EP 62: Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire

His friends were though and at the time of his journey, over two dozen neighborhood boys had died in the course of the war. A suggestion from the local bartender would send John on a months long journey all the way to the front lines of one of the most protested wars in the history of the US. Episode 60: Missing In West Virginia: The Sodder Kids:

Send us Fan MailThis week we are hopping into the way back machine to look at a missing persons case that has plagued this area for over 80 years. On the night of Christmas Eve in 1945 the Sodder Family had settled in for a night of celebration. Leaving her children playing with their new toys, Mrs. Sodder went to bed, planning on celebrating the holiday. But she would never get the chance. After having been woken up a couple of time already, she awoke to find her home in flames. When she made it out, only 4 of the 9 children in the home made it out with her. Ever since then, there have been questions about what happened to those kids. Did they die and burn up in the fire that took their family home? Or were they taken by political rivals of their father? We may never know. ROH EP 60 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodder_children_disappearance

Send us Fan MailDue to doctors appointments we got a bit behind with notes this week so enjoy this FREE patreon episode! We have got a doozy for you guys this week. Carl Panzram was one of seven children born on a farm where the kids worked the land. This did not change when the parents were forced to send their kids to school, instead the kids were forced to work long into the night, or else. By the age of 8 Panzram was getting arrested for being drunk in public, which started after a botched home surgery to his head. This was just the beginning of 30 years of arrest and imprisonment that would define the life of this man. As he got older his crimes evolved, and he maybe the worse rapist in human history. WDM EP 6 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Panzram

Episode 59: The Battle Of Blair Mountain:

Send us Fan MailWe are headed up Appalachia this week to take a look at an event of great historical significance. During this time of extreme division in the US, and across the global, we are taking a look at a time when people came together to fight the powers in charge. The coal industry was the backbone of Appalachia for a long time. Generations went deep underground to mine out the mineral that was running the world at the time. These families worked and lived in towns built and owned by the company they worked for, and if they should ever consider joining a union, they could lose their jobs, as well as their homes. Tired of being used and abused thousands of miners rallied together to march to free their imprisoned friends. But along the way they came across Blair Mountain, where an anti union sheriff had set up shop to stop their march. What came next was the largest armed fight on US soil since the civil war. One in which citizens on both sides fought for what they thought was right, or for whoever was paying them. ROH EP 59 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Blair_Mountainhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_Warshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_town

Send us Fan MailWe are going way back in time today to look at a man many of us have wrongly credited with being the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula; Vlad The Impaler.Born in the time of the great Ottoman Empire, Vlad the 3rd had a rough go at life. At a young age he and his brother were taken hostage by the Sultan for years, while their father stood again him and his reign. After his father was killed Vlad had to fight long and hard before he was actually able to take the throne of Wallachia for himself. Keeping it would be another long hard struggle, with many of those years spent imprisoned.Long after his death Vlad leaves a lasting legacy that will debated till the end of time. While it is true he used cruel and barbaric tactics, he is somewhat hailed as a hero for his fight to keep the region autonomous.ROH EP 58 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlad_the_Impalerhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlad_II_Draculhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyars_of_Moldavia_and_Wallachiahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%A2rgovi%C8%99tehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire

Episode 57: The New England Vampire Panic:

Send us Fan MailIn this day and age we have the benefit of science but in the 18th and 19th century there wasn't much of that. You know, you have ghost in your blood, do cocaine about it. So when one member of the family died, then others around them also begin to get sick, suspicion often fell on the recently deceased. For around 100 years New England was in the grip of a panic; panic that dead people were coming back to consume the life force of their relatives. Long before the word vampire became pop culture, these people feared these relatives had turned into these creatures and were tormenting their living relatives. So what do you do when the dead are coming back to hurt the living? Send us Fan MailWe are brining you a lighter topic this week, and a peek at our flagship show if you haven't given it a try. Historically the ocean has always been a dangerous place. From the way the water behaves, to other humans one may encounter while on the water, tales of the dangers of the open ocean have been around since the beginning of mankind. So when a crew runs across the abandoned ship of a friend, theories abound about what could have happened to the passengers. From initial theories of insurance fraud and murder, to wilder theories of aliens and large sea creatures, theories have been whispered since the ship was brought in. But we will probably never know what happen to the ten souls aboard this brig. Episode 52: The Bosnian War Part 2:

Send us Fan MailWe are bringing you the end of the Bosnian War, as it is on paper anyways, this Christmas week. It has been just over 30 years since the treaty to end the war was signed, and life has somewhat went back to normal for many of the citizens. But in a country that was ravaged by war for three years, that normal looks a lot different than it did in pre war Bosnia. Neighborhoods and parks are littered with headstones for the thousands lost. Building still hold the bullet holes from gunfire, and Sarajevo Roses can be seen all over the sidewalks, a reminder of numerous lives lost in that spot.A lesson we can all take from this war is to be careful of nationalist who want a ethnically pure state. That leads to ethnic cleansing, rape and the destruction of an entire culture. We can not let this happened within our own countries.ROH EP 52 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosnian_Warhttps://www.sah.org/2022/07/08/a-city-that-doesn-t-forget-sarajevo-thirty-years-after-the-war/

Episode 51: The Bosnian War Part 1:

Send us Fan MailThis week we are heading over the ocean to the small country of Bosnia to look at a war many, at least in my generation, probably do not remember. Bosnia is a land that has been inhabited since humans have roamed the earth. And with humans, war has also been common place. And in 1992 war came to this small country. A friend of mine was only 16 when her mother woke her to tell her they were at war, and then she heard the bombs dropping. This episode we will go through the events of this war from 1992 till the end of 1993. There are many names and acronyms in this episode that are hard to follow but bear with us. Episode 50: Thanksgiving:

Send us Fan MailAs we prepare to visit with friends and family this week, I wanted us to take a moment to think about the original, and rightful, stewards of this land. For decades children all across this continent have been fed the lie that their was a great friendship between the pilgrims and "indians" and that they shared a feast together as a sign of that friendship. But the reality is not that simple and never has been. Yes, there was a feast in 1621, however it was not a joint celebration put on by both communities. And even after they sat and broke bread, the violence inflicted upon the native communities only got worse. Some settler villages would even give thanks after the slaughter of native camps, but in reality they would give thanks for EVERYTHING that happened to them in the new world that did not lead to their immediate death. While you eat your truck this week, watch America's team lose yet again, and argue with your MAGAt uncle, remember those who truly paved the way for you to have this celebration, many of them with their very lives. ROH EP 50 Source Notes:https://allthatsinteresting.com/first-thanksgivinghttps://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/thanksgiving-myth-and-what-we-should-be-teaching-kids-180973655/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgivinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic_massacrehttps://lhhc.org/news-events/newsroom.html/article/2025/11/14/a-grateful-nation-how-president-lincoln-shaped-thanksgivinghttps://blog.nativehope.org/what-does-thanksgiving-mean-to-native-americans

Episode 49: Missing In Western Australia:

Send us Fan MailThis week we are headed to the land down under to look at a Missing Persons Crisis that mirrors the one we are facing here in the Americas. While looking for cases to highlight Blue Jean Jacket Day on June 6th here in the US, I came across several stories of missing aboriginal men in Western Australia. Much like with the MMIR movement here in the US, WA has an absurd number of missing men from native communities, most who reside in the bush. This episode gives s quick coverage of one family of who lost several members over the decades, with no clue as to what happened to them or where they could have gone. Follow the links below to find resources if you have any information about these disappearances. ROH EP 49 Source Notes:https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-28/young-men-vanish-in-the-outback-without-trace/104127924https://sacredconnectionswithcam.medium.com/the-forgotten-voices-wesley-lockyer-and-the-crisis-of-missing-aboriginal-men-d772f7df66b1https://australianmissingpersonsregister.com/ampr/WesLockyer.htmhttps://www.sbs.com.au/nitv/article/men-are-going-missing-in-the-pilbara-these-women-are-taking-their-fight-for-answers-to-the-top/p1k3fxaj8https://www.aboriginalheritage.org/history/history/https://historyofaustraliaonline.com/aboriginal-history/

Episode 48: The Bear River Massacre:

Send us Fan MailNovember is National Native American Heritage Month and of course we had to bring you stories about native american history. But, I wouldnt call this native american history; no this is the history of white supremacy. How the Shoshone people have survived and are still here today is their history. In the late 1800's the west was opening up for exploration and settlement. Although the Shoshone people had been living in this region for milennia, they were welcoming to the settlers who had moved into the area. Much to their own detriment. After a time of harsh treatment, the Shoshone had had enough and began to strike back at the settlers who were coming in and taking over their ancestoral lands. This lead the white people of the area to reach out and ask for help from the US government. In response they sent out the man they would call the Indian Killer, Patrick Connor. And he got that name honestly; starting with this massacre of almost a whole village, he started his reign of terror against the native people of the US that would last until the end of the civil war.ROH EP 48 Source Notes:https://allthatsinteresting.com/bear-river-massacrehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_River_Massacrehttps://rsc.byu.edu/civil-war-saints/bear-river-massacre-new-historical-evidencehttps://open.spotify.com/show/57T37XxHcdkdqV62eeLen9

No, he is not known to be a kind man by historians, cutting off hands for missed taxes, " giving" native women to his friends to do with what they wanted, and forcing native people into dark dank mines to extract the resources deep under ground. His arrival opened the door for all matter of men with cruel, greedy intentions to sail across the sea in search of fortune, with absolutely no regard for the lives of those who already inhabited the land. And so next year when " Columbus Day rolls around, learn about the local native community in your area and get involved with their community. He assumed his voyage would be 1/4th of what it would actually be. But once he had the funds to set out he did so. And as soon as he made landfall in the America's, the horrors began. But just last year Mother Nature showed us even we are not safe from her wrath. And that was a hard lesson residents of Galveston learned in September of 1900. After a few decades of having storms pass them by the residents of this booming island city felt that they were safe from any that might come their way.Add to that a political pissing match between the US and Cuban governments that brought communications to a halt, Galveston was terribly unprepared for the Cat 4 hurricane that was coming their way. Episode 43: The Elaine Massacre:

Send us Fan MailWe are back this week with another lesson about the evils of wealthy white people. I know that that statement can offend a lot of folks, but that is the fact of today's story. After a long summer of violence and oppression across the country, another black community came under attack when sharecroppers formed a Union to fight for more fair portions of the profits considering they were the ones doing all the work, and seeing little return. But anytime black people attempt to build something better for themselves, a certain group of individuals can't stand to see it, so they use any excuse to beat them back down, and keep them oppressed and subjugated.Only recently has the true horrors of this particular event been uncovered and if our government has their way, they will be buried again. Send us Fan MailWe are back this week and less covidy so we have another missing persons case for you today. There are many reasons I have never stepped foot on a cruise ship, but one of the biggest is the fear of someone I love going missing. And that fear hit the Bradley family in March of 1998 when Amy Lynn Bradley went missing from a Royal Caribbean ship her family was on for vacation. What happened next was failings from every department and organization brought on to investigate this disappearance. And 27 years later there have been very few leads into what happened to Amy and where she could be now.ROH EP 42: Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Amy_Lynn_Bradleyhttps://www.foxnews.com/us/brother-of-woman-who-vanished-from-cruise-27-years-ago-reveals-critical-third-witnesshttps://people.com/was-amy-lynn-bradley-ever-found-11774103https://www.netflix.com/title/81741332https://www.forbes.com/sites/monicamercuri/2025/07/20/what-happened-to-amy-bradley-netflix-reopens-the-chilling-cruise-ship-case/

Episode 40: How The US Stole Hawaii:

Send us Fan MailThis week we are going to the land of sea and sand, the beautiful islands of Hawaii. These islands have been a favorite vacation destination for families for over a century, but it has not always been a US state. For hundreds of years the island was home to Polynesian descendants who made the islands their home. The Europeans found the islands and soon began harvesting her resources. Before long, a group of white business men felt they had more right to the land than the native did and sought out to take control of the islands by force. The people of Hawaii have never stopped seeking to regain their sovereignty and I hope that one day control of the land will be given back to her rightful rulers.ROH EP 40 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii#Historyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Cookhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lonohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1840_Constitution_of_the_Hawaiian_Kingdomhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Pearl_Harbor#Approach_and_attackhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_sovereignty_movement#Sovereignty_and_cultural_rights_organizationshttps://www.civilbeat.org/2025/03/hawai%CA%BBi-must-become-self-governing/https://new-breath.org/resource/native-hawaiian-sovereignty/https://www.nationofhawaii.org/

Send us Fan MailSo we are back with the second half of the riots that changed LA forever. After the inital day of rioting, the violence became more widespread throughout the city. While law enforcement was quick to block off the neighborhoods of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, the Korean community was trapped in the middle. And so they defended themselves while cops ran from gunfire and dispatchers didn't answer their phones call. When it was all said and done, there was over 1 billion dollars in damage to the city, and over 60 lives were lost during that week of hell on earth. Unfortunately, we now have to deal with a president weaponizing the military against us like this again, all cause his feelings got hurt.ROH EP 37 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riotshttps://spreadsheets.latimes.com/la-riots-deaths/

    Episode 36: April 29, 1992, Part 1:

Send us Fan MailThis week we are going back in the way back machine to the best decade of all time. The 90's. After what has been going on in California the last month or so, I felt it was appropriate to look at a time in history when we saw this happen before. There is a lot that went into the events of April 29th 1992 and the days that followed. Years of abuse and exploitation, racism and stereotyping had the black community at it's wits end. Imagine you are just trying to live day to day but are constantly harrassed for the way you look.In the 3 years before the riots over 50,000 people had been arrested simply because of where they lived. Then a young black girl was killed for no reason, and a black man was beaten severely with no one being held responsible. And people were tired.ROH EP 36 Source Notes:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_29%2C_1992_(Miami)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riotshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Hammer_(1987)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Latasha_Harlinshttps://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8157203-there-are-three-sides-to-every-story-your-side-my

Send us Fan MailWe got a bit of a lighter episode for ya this week, but its still a weird story. On July 14th 1518 Frau Troffea walked out of her home in Strasbourg France and began dancing. Soon more people began joining her and before long almost 400 people had joined in the choreomania that would last for two months.Even today with the technology we have there is no way for us to know what caused this plague, or any of the others to follow.
