The Next Ride — From an Old Trike to What’s Next

In this episode, I share what comes after the climb.I rode the Washington Auto Road on an older recumbent trike — not new, not fancy, just something that worked. After my stroke, I can’t speak like I used to, so I use this system to tell my story. And honestly, it’s been really good. It lets me keep going, keep riding, and keep connecting. This episode is about the next chapter. The future of recumbent trikes — and companies like Greenspeed that helped start it all — and what’s possible now with better design, comfort, and support.👉 Explore current Greenspeed trikes:https://greenspeed-trikes.com/trikes/👉 Learn the story behind it all:https://greenspeed-trikes.com/about/history/I talk about what a newer trike could mean — more miles, more rides, more people getting back out there after stroke or injury. This isn’t just about a bike. It’s about what comes next. From an old trike…to the next ride.🎧 Music by Viacheslav Starostin from PixabayIf this story means something to you, share it or reach out. The ride keeps going.

Three Wheels, Big Miles — Radical Design Bags & Riding Toward Recovery

On this episode of Roll Toward Recovery, we talk about the gear that makes long rides possible. For recumbent riders and trike tourers, storage matters. Today we highlight Radical Design, a company known around the world for designing luggage systems specifically for recumbent bikes and trikes. Their famous Undercover bags mount under the seat, keeping weight low and balanced while giving riders serious carrying capacity. For anyone riding long distances — touring, commuting, or adventure riding — these bags have become a trusted solution. But this podcast is about more than gear. After surviving a stroke, cycling became part of my recovery and a way to keep moving forward. Through organizations like Spokes Fighting Strokes, riders across the country are proving that recovery doesn’t stop — it keeps rolling.Learn more about Radical Design:https://www.radicaldesign.comLearn more about Spokes Fighting Strokes:https://www.spokesfightingstrokes.orgFollow Mike Weed:https://www.facebook.com/michael.d.weed/Recovery moves forward — one ride at a time. 🚴‍♂️

Walk & Roll to Wheels: StrokeOT, Spokes Fighting Strokes, and Brian’s Ride

I’m Mike Weed, a stroke survivor, and this is a solo episode of Roll Toward Recovery. This episode is about community in Connecticut — and how recovery grows when people show up for each other.I talk about:• Carolyn Brown and StrokeOT• The Walk & Roll event (Walkers and rollers together — movement for everyone)• Spokes Fighting Strokes and the power of cycling in stroke recovery• And a personal moment that meant a lot to me: one more stroke survivor named Brian saw what was possible, ordered his bike, and now he rides. That’s the ripple effect. Milestones on Three Wheels — The Camino, Stroke Recovery & Rolling Forward

What if recovery is a pilgrimage? In this episode of Roll Toward Recovery, stroke survivor Mike Weed shares the story of a woman who rode the Camino de Santiago — a thousand-year-old pilgrimage route across Spain — on a recumbent trike. Her book, Mijlpalen (Milestones), is about willpower, perseverance, and choosing your own path.As a rider rebuilding strength after stroke, Mike reflects on how recovery feels like its own Camino. Some of us walk. Some of us roll. But we all move forward — one milestone at a time. This episode is supported by T-Cycle — precision components for recumbent riders. One Mile at a Time

Hi — I’m Mike Weed. I’m raising funds to support my adaptive cycling and stroke recovery journey, and to help more people get access to adaptive trikes. If you can donate or share, it means a lot.https://gofund.me/1f5293d6dIn this episode of Roll Toward Recovery, Mike Weed shares a personal story inspired by the feeling of “If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot.Living with aphasia after a stroke can mean your thoughts are clear, but your words come out slow or broken. On a quiet winter ride, Mike reflects on the gap between his inside voice and outside voice—what it feels like to want to say more, and what patience and understanding can mean for stroke survivors.Mike is a stroke survivor, and his speech is limited, so AI helps him tell these stories clearly. If you love someone who struggles to speak, this episode is for you—one mile at a time.

Burning Man: The Desert City on Bikes

My speech is limited from a stroke, so AI helps me tell these stories clearly.A city appears in the Nevada desert once a year — built from tents, camps, art, and a whole lot of bikes. In this episode, Mike Weed explores Burning Man and the temporary world of Black Rock City, where movement becomes freedom and community becomes the fuel that keeps people going. From the bike-filled streets of the playa to the idea of rebuilding after life changes you, this episode connects the spirit of Burning Man to adaptive cycling, trikes, and recovery. You don’t have to go to Burning Man to learn from it — you can bring the best parts home: creativity, preparation, kindness, and forward motion.GoFundMe — Roll Toward Recovery with Mike Weed: https://gofund.me/12c1b3754Burning Manhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Man

Everybody Rolls: Trails, Friends, and the Summer Plan

Mike lays out the summertime goal: a positive trail-and-travel project built with friends—camping sometimes, hotels sometimes, trails always. We talk about riding together (and why group travel means equipment, a trailer, and maybe a camper), plus the trike goal: the Catrike Dumont—folding for easier travel and less stress. Mike also explains the difference between loans and grants (“loans are like borrowing stress… grants are like borrowing hope”), and why the next step is finding a cool name for the business and podcast. We’re also dreaming big about long-distance trail routes like the Great American Rail-Trail—over 3,700 miles from Washington, D.C. to Washington State. All the Stuff I Do — My Wife’s Gonna Be Mad 😜

It’s the Christmas holidays, it’s snowing, and I’m out riding big tires with a motor — because winter can be fun. Then it’s family time: her family and mine together, lots of kids, lots of gifts, and a house full of love. After that, my brain goes into planning mode: three years at Hostel Shoppe’s Pedal Point Rally with Zimmerman, and TOT (Trikes Optional Tour) — usually every June in and around Kellogg, Idaho — plus Tucson TOT too. And here’s the big idea: what if we start our own New England TOT up here? I also share “his” 2026 maybe-list (NOFA-VT, SPEZI in Freiburg April 25–26, LVRT in early June, XTXL late June/early July, Mt. Motor or No Motor: Two Systems, One Journey

In this episode of Roll Toward Recovery, Mike Weed explores a question he lives with every day: motor or no motor?Mike rides with two different systems — a simple pedal-only setup for smooth home rail trails, and an e-assist setup for tougher terrain like Vermont’s hills, where a reliable base camp makes charging manageable. Looking ahead to bigger dreams — west to east, sea to sea — the question shifts again toward simplicity, reliability, and mental energy. This isn’t a gear debate. It’s an honest reflection on planning rides after a stroke, managing energy, learning from real long-distance travelers, and using AI to help shape thoughts into clear speech so the story can be told.Links mentioned in this episode:Travels By Trike (Sylvia): https://travelsbytrike.blogspot.com/JaYoe: https://jayoe.com/NOFAVT (Facebook): https://www.facebook.com/NOFAVTPleaseGo check them out — they’re great resources. No final answer — just the real journey, one ride at a time.

I haven’t done RAGBRAI yet—but it’s been sitting in my head for a long time. From Steel to Trail: Riding the Great Allegheny Passage (Part 1)

My name is Mike Weed. I’m a stroke survivor, and I ride the world on three wheels — with a little help from AI to share my voice. In this episode of Roll Toward Recovery, I tell the story of Part 1 of our 7-day ride from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Washington, DC, from August 28 to September 7, 2021. This chapter follows the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. You’ll hear about a beer boat on the river the night before the ride, my years working in a cold steel rolling mill at I2S (now Tenova I2S), and our little crew: four trikes, a “bus guy” driving the Spokes Fighting Strokes trailer, and sleeping inside that trailer along the way. We roll through trail towns, stop for coffee and snacks, cross big bridges, climb to the Eastern Continental Divide, ride the Big Savage Tunnel, and finally drop into Cumberland to celebrate with lunch at the Crabby Pig.This isn’t just a bike story. It’s about recovery, friendship, and what it means to keep moving forward after stroke — on three wheels, one good arm, and a voice powered by AI.

    Freedom on Three Wheels

Stroke changed my life in an instant.Hospitals. Rehab. No words. One arm that would not work.In this episode of Roll Toward Recovery, I tell the story of how I went from a month at Gaylord Hospital, to a month at Traurig House, to sitting at home not able to talk, read, or write… and how a dusty barn and a blue Schwinn three-wheeler helped me find freedom again.Gaylord Hospital, Traurig House, and the Gaylord Sports Association didn’t just treat me; they helped me get back into sports and back onto three wheels.I share:The early days after strokeTime at Gaylord and Traurig HouseHours alone in the barn trying to do something positiveBuilding my first trike one-handedThat first shaky ride on the roadGoing back to Gaylord for speech and outpatient therapySeeing a low recumbent trike with Gaylord Sports for the first timeThe support of my grandmother’s memory, my wife Heidi, and our kids Sam, Brandt, and EliThis episode is told slowly on purpose, for people living with stroke, brain injury, or aphasia who need extra time to follow the words. If this story means something to you, please share it with someone who needs hope, or someone who loves to ride.Support my journey and future episodes here:GoFundMe – https://gofund.me/85ee543aThank you for listening.– Mike Weed

Harlem Valley Rail Trail – Coffee at the End of the Line

Ride with me, Mike Weed, a stroke survivor on three wheels, as I take my trike up and down the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in New York. I start at Wassaic Station, follow the old railroad line past barns, fields, ponds, and a long wooden boardwalk, all the way toward Copake Falls and back. By the time I roll back to the car, I’ve done around 45–50 miles, finished off with a simple, hot, perfect cup of coffee at the end of the line.Because of my aphasia, I use an AI helper (Aphasia AI) to turn my ride notes and thoughts into the clear voice you hear in this episode. The miles, the effort, and the story are all mine.If you’d like to help me keep riding and help other stroke and brain-injury survivors get access to adaptive bikes and trikes, you can support my GoFundMe here:https://gofund.me/9002bc469Thanks for listening, and thanks for rolling the Harlem Valley Rail Trail with me.

Air Line State Park Trail – Freedom on Three Wheels

In this episode of Roll Toward Recovery, I stay close to home on one of my favorite rail trails in Connecticut: the Air Line State Park Trail. It’s an old railroad turned into a bike path, and over time I rode the whole line across Connecticut — not in one big day, but my way, on three wheels, one out-and-back at a time.I talk about the bigger dream of the East Coast Greenway from Maine to Florida, what it feels like to roll through old rock cuts, bridges, ghost-tree swamps, and big valley views, and why I feel truly free when it’s just me, the trike, and the sound of gravel under my tires. You’ll also hear about my friend Brenda, another three-wheeler with her own brain challenges, and how out on the trail we’re just two riders laughing and rolling together.I share what it’s like to live with stroke and aphasia, and how AI helps me turn my ideas and memories into a clear voice for this podcast. Bicycle Man Weekend with JaYoe Nation and Danielle

My name is Mike Weed. I’m a stroke survivor, and I’ve been riding strong on three wheels for years. In this episode, I take you to Alfred Station, New York, for a special weekend at Bicycle Man LLC with friends, family, and Matt Galet of JaYoe Nation.Out on the road, I’m riding behind Danielle George in her first year with the bike. She’s a little bit slower on the hills, still learning the feel of it – but every climb, every mile, she keeps turning the pedals and she makes it. This episode is about that kind of quiet strength: trikes, community, and the courage to keep going. We camp, cook, and laugh together, surrounded by rows of recumbent bikes and trikes at one of the coolest recumbent shops around. Back at camp, the stories get deeper – stroke, recovery, long tours – and one very strong whiskey drink from Matt, his “Rusty JaYoe,” knocks me back after a year off whiskey and gives us a night of big laughs. If you’re a stroke survivor, living with a disability, or just love the sound of flags flapping and trikes rolling, this episode is for you.Support my adaptive cycling journey: https://gofund.me/a610eb90the JaYoe Nation https://www.youtube.com/@JaYoeNationBicycle Man LLC http://www.bicycleman.com/Mike Weed(Aphasia AI  https://chatgpt.com/)

Erie Canal, Or Bust: 356 Miles on Three Wheels

In 2022, I pointed my recumbent trike toward one of the great classic routes in the United States: the Erie Canal Trail. Three hundred fifty-six miles from Buffalo to Albany. Eight days on the road. Three nights in a tent, the rest in little hotels along the way.I’m Mike Weed. I’m a stroke survivor and an adaptive cyclist on three wheels. In this episode, I take you with me day by day along the canal: the train station start, rainy mornings, quiet campsites, big canal locks, surprise flat tires, hot camp meals, and the feeling of rolling into each new town under my own power. If you’re living with stroke or any big challenge, this ride is for you. It’s not about going fast. It’s about keeping moving—one mile, one day, one new trail at a time. Thanks for riding the Erie Canal with me.

One Mile Short, A Weekend Full: My Mt. Washington Story

Join me, Mike Weed — stroke survivor and adaptive cyclist on three wheels — as I take you through my Mt. Washington weekend. This isn’t just about race day. It’s about months of hunting for the right trike, rebuilding wheels and gears, a gift from my 88-year-old friend West, camping in my Honda van, and packing a cabin full of family: Penny, my sister Jenn and her boyfriend Matt, my parents, and more. I’ll bring you along for the early-morning start, the brutal climb, the moment the clock beats me with one mile to go, and the cold, tired, beer-and-long-nap finish. In the end, I didn’t reach the summit — but I gained a mountain of memories and a new kind of win.

There’s simple camp life: one-handed cooking at the picnic table, morning coffee in my “Thank You” mug, and a small Vermont camper sticker that reminds me that stroke in action was here. This isn’t a race story. It’s a story of recovery, solitude, and finding freedom in quiet miles. If you’re living with stroke or any big life change, I hope this ride helps you imagine your own small adventure.
