A Simple Plan
This week on Second Chance Cinema, MC and Spro head into the snowy woods to revisit A Simple Plan — the quiet, brutal thriller from Sam Raimi that proves greed can destroy absolutely everybody. The guys break down the performances from Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, and Bridget Fonda, discuss why this might be Raimi’s most mature film, and ask the big question: if you found millions of dollars buried in the woods... would you keep it? Along the way, MC and Spro spiral into conversations about bad decisions, human nature, whether life ever actually goes “according to plan,” and how one tiny compromise can snowball into total disaster. Plus: a ridiculous song parody, philosophical debates, and the kind of moral panic only Second Chance Cinema can deliver. Sometimes the simplest plan is the one that ruins everything. #SecondChanceCinema #ASimplePlan #SamRaimi #BillPaxton #BillyBobThornton #BridgetFonda #MoviePodcast #FilmPodcast #Cinema #90sMovies #ThrillerMovies #NeoNoir #FilmDiscussion #MovieReview #PodcastLife #MCandSpro #TrueCrimeVibes #DarkComedy #MovieLovers #FilmFans

Plus, we break down our favorite moments, discuss how short films make you want more (and maybe intrigue financers, too?), and explore why The Proposal feels like a proof-of-concept for something much bigger. Shock and Awe
Second Chance Cinema returns with a timely deep dive into Rob Reiner’s political drama Shock and Awe—a film we originally revisited to honor Reiner after his recent passing… only to discover that its warnings feel eerily aligned with this weekend’s news cycle. MC and Spro take listeners back to their shared dorm at Ohio University on 9/11, when the world changed in real time outside their window. MC brings firsthand experience from his time as a "journo" (what it means in the boring world of chasing down facts), while Spro breaks down how easy it was for average Americans to trust the Bush administration’s narrative after the towers fell (and why it made him feel at his worst). We didn’t plan for the world to make Rob Reiner’s 2017 film about 2003 feel relevant again… but here we are. This is an episode about journalism, memory, fear, and the stories we choose to believe when everything is on fire. Year 8: Unfinished Business
Second Chance Cinema returns with MC and Spro digging into Unfinished Business (2015), the not-quite-forgotten Vince Vaughn comedy that somehow slipped between studio cracks and audience expectations. Was it really as bad as the critics said? 10 F***ing %?! Or was it a case of a film that was mismarketed, with more heart than anyone remembers? Join us as we revisit the business trip from hell and uncover the surprisingly thoughtful story buried under corporate jargon, European chaos, and Dave Franco being the, obviously, more likable Franco brother. This is the kind of movie Second Chance Cinema was made for: overlooked, misunderstood, and maybe… actually pretty good? #SecondChanceCinema #SCC #MCandSpro #UnfinishedBusiness #VinceVaughn #DaveFranco #TomWilkinson #KenScott #MoviePodcast #FilmDiscussion #ForgottenFilms #ComedyMovies #RewatchPodcast #CultClassics #FilmCommunity #MovieFans #PodbeanPodcasts #PodcastLife #FilmCriticism #GiveItASecondChance #HiddenGems #CinemaRevisited

Green Street Hooligans
In this episode of Second Chance Cinema, MC and Spro lace up their boots and step onto the pitch as they revisit Green Street Hooligans, the gritty 2005 cult favorite that introduced many Americans to the world of English football firms. From Elijah Wood’s unexpected turn as an ex-Harvard student to Charlie Hunnam’s unforgettable performance as Pete Dunham, the guys dig into why this film has endured, what it gets right about loyalty and violence, and how it became a late-night staple for a certain generation of movie fans. Along the way, Spro shares what little he knows about Premiere League football and their fans, MC talks about why this movie made his picks and still wows him today, and together they explore whether Hooligans deserves a second chance in today’s cinematic landscape. Suicide Kings
In this episode of Second Chance Cinema, MC and Spro dig into Suicide Kings — the 1997 crime thriller that blends dark comedy, kidnapping chaos, Christopher Walken coolness, and more plot twists than any film about rich-kid amateurs should legally be allowed to contain. Once dismissed as a Tarantino-wannabe and overshadowed by the decade’s heavier hitters, Suicide Kings has since developed a loyal cult following thanks to its razor-sharp dialogue, brisk pacing, and Walken’s magnetic, deadpan menace. MC and Spro revisit the film with fresh eyes to ask the big question: Did we judge this movie too harshly the first time around? From its clever structure to its surprisingly emotional center, the guys explore why Suicide Kings may deserve a seat back at the table — or at least a cleaner chair than the one Walken gets taped to. Featuring signature SCC banter, behind-the-scenes nuggets, and the usual dose of nostalgia, this episode is everything you need to reevaluate one of the ‘90s most underrated crime thrillers. #SecondChanceCinema #SCCPodcast #MoviePodcast #SuicideKings #ChristopherWalken #90sMovies #CultClassics #UnderratedMovies #FilmDiscussion #FilmNerd #MovieRewatch #CinemaClub #CrimeThriller #IndieFilm #RetroRewatch #PodcastEpisode #FilmCommunity #MovieBuffs #PodcastersOfInstagram #RewatchPodcast

The Thing From Another World (1951)
On this episode of Second Chance Cinema, MC and Spro revisit the 1951 sci-fi classic The Thing From Another World—a film brought back to our radar thanks to our interview with Jayson Dumenigo. Known for cinema’s first full burn, this Cold War-era chiller pits scientists against soldiers in a frozen standoff over knowledge, survival, and an alien threat. Along the way, we dive into the film’s sharp dialogue, explore its themes of science vs. the army, debate black-and-white vs. colorized viewing (with MC firmly in the color camp), and even bring poetry into the mix with acrostics chosen by the Wheel of Poetry. #SecondChanceCinema #TheThingFromAnotherWorld #SciFiClassics #HowardHawks #FilmPodcast #MoviePodcast #CultCinema #TheThing #GoldenAgeCinema #ClassicMovies

Sisu (2022)
This week, we dig into Sisu (2023)—the Finnish pulp-action blast where one man, a pickaxe, and a whole lot of grit take on the Nazi war machine. Recommended to us by filmmaker Jeff Wolfe (Outbreak, 2024), Sisu blends brutal, inventive violence with breathtaking cinematography, creating a mythic folk-hero story that feels like John Wick collided with a spaghetti Western. We talk about why this kind of lean, violent cinema works, the appeal of watching Nazis get torn apart on screen, and whether “sisu” as a concept makes the film resonate beyond its bloody spectacle. If you like your action raw, stylish, and more about grit than words—this one’s for you. #SecondChanceCinema #Podcast #Sisu #SisuMovie #FinnishCinema #ActionMovies #GeoffWolfe #Outbreak2024 #FilmDiscussion #JohnWickVibes #SpaghettiWestern #PulpCinema

The Saint
MC and Spro exploit a Second Chance loophole to talk about the late, great Val Kilmer's less talked about gem. If you're in the mood for a sleek '90s action thriller with a bit of espionage, a touch of romance, and a wildly entertaining performance by Val Kilmer, The Saint is worth a watch. Kilmer plays a master of disguise and international thief who gets pulled into a Cold War-style conspiracy involving stolen technology and Russian politics. It's got that stylish, globe-trotting vibe, a moody soundtrack (including some standout '90s electronica), and Kilmer clearly having fun switching personas. It's not perfect, but it's an enjoyable ride — especially if you like your thrillers with a bit of camp and charm. #TheSaint1997 #ValKilmer #SimonTemplar #TheSaintMovie #ElisabethShue #SpyThriller #MasterOfDisguise #ColdFusion #SaintWithManyFaces #KilmerClassic #90sMovies #90sThriller #NostalgiaCinema #RetroMovieNight #ThrowbackMovie #MoviePodcast #FilmDiscussion #PodcastEpisode #NowPlayingPodcast #MovieTalk #SpyMovies #ActionThriller #EspionageFilm #SecretIdentities #MovieSpies #90sSoundtrack #ElectronicaVibes #ScoreAndSoundtrack #RewatchAndReview #HiddenGemMovie

A Chat with Mike Chat
Michael Chaturantabut (born April 30, 1975) is a Thai American actor, martial artist and stuntman, best known for his role as Chad Lee, the Blue Ranger in Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. He was born in Rayong Province, Thailand. Extreme martial art Xtreme Martial Arts or XMA is a brand name owned by Chaturantabut. Chaturantabut's XMA is a combination of elements from martial arts, acrobatics and gymnastics, with an emphasis on showmanship. The concept of adding gymnastics-like tumbling moves to elements of traditional martial arts is otherwise known as "tricking (martial arts)". XMA makes these exhibition moves the focus of the sport. Open hand and weapons choreography are often accompanied by dramatic dance or programmatic music. The goal is to command the attention of the audience. Currently there are schools of martial arts or similar XMA styles based in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, the World Headquarters being in North Hollywood, California. Many of the moves are high-flying aerial acrobatic maneuvers. These stunning movements attain the goal of capturing the crowd, improving physical agility, balance, strength, coordination, and endurance, as well as performing an artistic display of talent. He feels that there are many basic moves that can be specialized to be more acrobatic, flashy and artistic, so as to give the impression of complexity and difficulty for showmanship purposes. It is for this reason that he feels that even the basic athlete or beginner can learn the progression from basic moves to highly complex acrobatic sequences.

Coherence
Coherence is a 2013 American surreal science fiction psychological thriller film directed by James Ward Byrkit in his directorial debut. The film had its world debut on September 19, 2013, at Fantastic Fest and stars Emily Foxler as a woman who must deal with strange occurrences following the close passing of a comet. Byrkit came up with the idea for Coherence after deciding that he wanted to test the idea of shooting a film "without a crew and without a script". He chose to shoot in his own home and developed the film's science fiction aspect out of necessity, as he wanted to "make a living room feel bigger than just a living room". While Byrkit did have a specific idea for how the film would unfold, he selected improvisational actors and gave them the basic outline of their characters, motivations, and major plot points. In the second part-- MC and Spro catch-up with their pal (and Review Reader) Rudy who just got done returning to the stage in Available Light's Production of You Will Get Sick in Columbus, OH. Listeners will get to know one of MC and Spro's favorite people on a higher level, and listen to one man's advice on how to keep the spark alive for the thing you're passionate about. The Punisher: War Zone
Punisher: War Zone is a 2008 vigilante action-thriller film based on the Marvel Comics character the Punisher, directed by Lexi Alexander. Rather than a sequel to 2004's The Punisher, the film is a reboot that follows the war waged by vigilante Frank Castle / Punisher (Ray Stevenson) on crime and corruption, in particular on the disfigured mob boss known as Billy "Jigsaw" Russotti (Dominic West).[6] It is the third feature film adaptation of The Punisher, the second reboot thereof and the first of two films to be produced under the Marvel Knights production banner, which focuses on films for mature audiences. Punisher: War Zone was released in North America by Lionsgate on December 5, 2008, and it was released in the United Kingdom by Sony Pictures Releasing on February 6, 2009 to negative reviews and grossed $10 million worldwide, making it a box-office bomb. Its related soundtrack hit the #23 slot on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart. It was the final Punisher film to be produced by an outside studio before the rights reverted to Marvel Studios, with Stevenson reprising his role as Castle in The Super Hero Squad Show. A television series was later released on Netflix in 2017 and is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. MC references this article in the episode: https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisettevoytko/2020/06/11/the-creator-of-the-punisher-wants-to-reclaim-the-iconic-skull-from-police-and-fringe-admirers/?sh=2ab6c3b1b434

Power/Rangers
For the first time in Second Chance Cinema history, MC and Spro sat down together to watch a film and then hopped right on the mics to talk about it. Maybe it's because this film is only 11 minutes long. But, despite how short it is, it truly packs a punch. If you want to watch it with them, you can find Power/Rangers here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wncYbIpm6hk Power/Rangers, or Power Rangers: Unauthorized, is an American superhero fan short film based on the Power Rangers franchise, and was directed and co-written by Joseph Kahn, produced by Adi Shankar and Jil Hardin, and co-written by James Van Der Beek and Dutch Southern. The short film featured an ensemble cast starring Katee Sackhoff, Van Der Beek, Russ Bain, Will Yun Lee, and Gichi Gamba. It was released on YouTube and Vimeo on February 23, 2015.

Without a Paddle
In 2004, amongst other comedies like Road Trip, Eurotrip, Grandma's Boy, Super Troopers came this comedy starring Dax Shephard, Seth Green and Matthew Lillard that started amazingly and then went... a little off the rails. Basic (2003)
MC and Spro continue Year 6 with one of Spro's most liked under-the-radar films. Basic reunites John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson on the screen for the first time since their Pulp Fiction days. Critics hated this film because they didn't understand it, but Spro hopes to explain it so the SCC audience can grasp how John McTiernan's (Die Hard) last film isn't filled with twists and turns but rather just manipulative lies. This episode proves that Basic isn't complicated. 316 - A Celebration of Bruce Willis
Walter Bruce Willis (born March 19, 1955) is an American former actor. He achieved fame with a leading role on the comedy-drama series Moonlighting (1985–1989) and has appeared in over a hundred films, gaining recognition as an action hero after his portrayal of John McClane in the Die Hard franchise (1988–2013) and other roles.[1][2] Willis's other credits include The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Hudson Hawk (1991), Pulp Fiction (1994), 12 Monkeys (1995), The Fifth Element (1997), Armageddon (1998), The Sixth Sense (1999), Unbreakable (2000), Tears of the Sun (2003), Lucky Number Slevin (2006), Surrogates (2009), Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and Motherless Brooklyn (2019). In the later years of his career, Willis starred in many low-budget direct-to-video films, which were poorly received. In March 2022, Willis's family announced that he was retiring after suffering from aphasia. In February 2023, he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. As a singer, Willis released his debut album, The Return of Bruno, in 1987, followed by two more albums in 1989 and 2001. He made his Broadway debut in the stage adaptation of Misery in 2015. Willis has received various accolades throughout his career, including a Golden Globe Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and two People's Choice Awards. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006. Films featuring Willis have grossed between US$2.64 billion and US$3.05 billion at North American box offices, making him in 2010 the eighth-highest-grossing leading actor. Several years ago, Second Chance Cinema Host and S.C.C. Guest Host Jeremy were sitting at work and came up with a brain exercise of picking the four best things in a pop culture category. Years later, they invited Spro and Rudy to join them and nominate, dissect, debate and elect their choices. To introduce the second season of The Mount Rushmore Podcast (recorded between Second Chance Cinemas 2nd and 3rd seasons,) we came up with a crossover idea of trying to figure out which of the movies we covered are the 4 best. 315 - TMNT 2007
TMNT is a 2007 computer-animated superhero film written and directed by Kevin Munroe (in his feature directorial debut). It is the fourth theatrical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and a standalone sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993).[6] The first animated film in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, it features an ensemble voice cast including Chris Evans, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mako, Kevin Smith, Patrick Stewart, and Ziyi Zhang with narration by Laurence Fishburne. In the film, after having grown apart following the final defeat of their arch-enemy, the Shredder, the four Turtles — Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo (voiced respectively by James Arnold Taylor, Nolan North, Mitchell Whitfield, and Mikey Kelley) — are set to reunite and overcome their faults to save the world from evil ancient creatures. A computer-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film was first announced in 2000, with John Woo supposedly directing, but the project languished in development hell, and Woo ultimately moved on to other projects. The choice to do the film in CGI instead of live action like the prior Turtles films was to have audiences suspend their beliefs easier as well as to save budget. When writing TMNT, Munroe wanted to divert away from the lighthearted elements of the franchise and put a heavier emphasis on the darker tone of the original comics. The animators that worked on the fight sequences were inspired by Hong Kong action films. TMNT was released theatrically in the United States on March 23, 2007, by Warner Bros. Pictures, and in Hong Kong, on March 29 by Gold Scene. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it was a small commercial success, grossing over $95 million worldwide against a budget of $34 million. Planned sequels were cancelled after Nickelodeon acquired the franchise in 2009, rebooting the film series with the live-action film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2014. Teenage turtles fight amongst each other and, yet, they still save the world -SPRO Cowabunga, dude Four turtles. Four Green Brothers. Best Turtle fight, yet. -MC

314 - Hancock
Hancock is a 2008 American superhero film directed by Peter Berg from a screenplay by Vince Gilligan and Vy Vincent Ngo and co-produced by and starring Will Smith in the title role with Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman. The story was originally written by Vy Vincent Ngo in 1996. It languished in development hell for years with various directors attached, including Tony Scott, Michael Mann (who would later co-produce the film), Jonathan Mostow, and Gabriele Muccino, before being filmed in 2007 in Los Angeles with a production budget of $150 million. In the United States, the film was rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America after changes were made at their request in order to avoid an R rating, which it had received twice before. The film was released on July 2, 2008, in the United States by Columbia Pictures. Hancock received mixed reviews from critics who praised its humor, performances, visual effects and premise, but criticized its execution and failure to deliver on its potential, especially during its second half. It grossed $629 million worldwide, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2008. ABAB Poetry-- "So, huh, Hancock came out in 2008? You would think after Will Smith's 2022 I bet he wished he did this today... Could have gotten some character reconstruction, dude." - Spro "Hancock was a jerk. A superhero with no class. Fighting crime with a smirk, shoving head into ass." - MC "Will Smith played a drunk hero. Who doesn't know Charlize is his equal. The fucks he gives equals zero. Dammit, this movie deserved a sequel." - Rudy

313 - Sudden Death
Sudden Death is a 1995 American action-thriller film directed by Peter Hyams and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Powers Boothe, Raymond J. Barry and Dorian Harewood.[3] The film pits a lone fire marshal against extortionists who hold unsuspecting NHL players and fans for ransom during game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals, and set payment milestones to coincide with the game's progress.[4] It was Hyams' second directorial collaboration with Van Damme, after Timecop (1994) and before Enemies Closer (2013).[5] Sudden Death was released in the United States on December 22, 1995 to mixed reviews, albeit better than most of Van Damme's earlier efforts.[6][7] It was a minor success, grossing $64 million at the box office on an announced budget of $35 million.[1][2] However, it fell short of Timecop's performance, especially domestically.[8] There once was a French Canadian named Darren McCord A fire marshall with a certain set of skills in store He’s got three periods plus one to make a terrorist’s plot undone And save a stadium of people plus two more -Spro There once was a man named McCord His presence was sorely ignored He rescued his daughter Bad guys, he did slaughter All while players were crashing the boards -MC It’s Jean Claude vs Powers Booth Van Damme’s behind the scenes playings sleuth Things are going to get dicey He’ll kick the shit out of Icey And toss some guys off of the roof -Jeremy
