Send us Fan MailWelcome to Season 5, Episode 18, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our interview with the dynamic, interstellar duo - The Moon City Masters!!! About The Band:The Moon City Masters are a neo-classic rock band with a contemporary edge and more than a hint of soul and funk. The band, consisting of twin brothers, Jordan and Talor Steinberg, brings together the whole package, with virtuosic playing and singing combined with excellent songcraft and an aesthetic that is all their own. It's the unique MCM vibe that makes outlets like Classic Rock Magazine say that their music is full of "heart, harmonies and rays of California sunshine." Ever since they first picked up their instruments at the tender age of 12 after their dad took them to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the brothers have been cranking out riffs and tunes with preternatural ability.Initially, they both picked up guitars, but Jordan soon switched to bass. Over the course of the next several years, they honed their singing and playing chops to a fine edge. The band kicked their songwriting into overdrive when they started working with Grammy-nominated producer, Justin Craig. The band released their debut E.P., “The Adventures of the Moon City Masters” in late 2019. Since then, they’ve been hard at work recording and releasing singles. They will be playing dates around the country as the world opens up again. They can’t wait to see you there.Check them out at: https://www.mooncitymasters.com/IG: @mooncitymastersYouTube: @TheMoonCityMasters _______Click Here For 10% Off Your Total Purchase From Black Box Prompter!https://blackboxprompter.com/?coupon=secondhandtalent_______With "Secondhand Talent", we want to devote a platform to taking moments to shine the spotlight on those that manage the spotlights. Ellis shares insights into the history and purpose of the Mockingbird Foundation, emphasizing the need for genuine connections and support within the music community. The episode concludes with reflections on the future of nonprofits and the ongoing commitment to fostering music education and community support.About Mockingbird Foundation:Mockingbird started as an all-volunteer non-profit in 1996 in order to raise money for music education for children. The original impetus was the compilation of the most accurate and literary book on Phish’s music available. We’ve done that, in three highly successful editions, as well as taken on a wide range of projects, including an album, art, special events, and branded merchandise.Borne from a Usenet newsgroup, and started in a mailing list, Mockingbird now incorporates a wide array of tools and media, and publishes content from Phish.net in print form, to other sites through a set of APIs, and to various mobile apps through strategic partnerships.Yet it still exists almost exclusively online, using the Internet for publicity, fundraising, all internal communications, and even to develop, produce, and distribute intellectual property.Though the Foundation exists almost exclusively online, it is a formally recognized nonprofit, with 501(c)3 tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. Donations are thus tax-deductible, and contributions are applied to the next round of regular grants. Episode #72: "Bigger Fish To Fry (Part II)" wsg The Big Fish
Send us Fan MailWelcome to Season 4, Episode 13, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you the second part of the Secondhand Talent interview of legendary bouncer, The Big Fish!I want to tell y’all a Little story about The Big Fish… and we’ll tell it as it is - a moshel, as we say in Yiddish - a parable. His grandfather, The Great Fish, once asked Big Fish a question, when he was still relatively Little. The Great Fish was from the old country, one of the first off the boat from what is now Ukraine. A tough Jew that survived the annihilation of his Shtetl when the Cossacks cleaned house on the Czar’s resources before the Bolsheviks could get their hands on the horses they raised. (add Ed. note - read “Animal Farm”)The Great Fish knew the Little Fish wasn’t like the other kids in the family. He was quiet, reserved, and unflappable. He would do things the other kids wouldn’t, because he could keep his mouth shut and absorb any consequences. The Great Fish, as he pointed at the Little one's forehead, asked: “If you are asked the question, can you say ‘yes’?”The Little Fish just looked at him, sitting in his Queen Anne chair with his legs crossed, without an answer. The Great Fish struck fear into as many people as he helped when the coin was flipped.__________As a bouncer, that question worked out for The (now) Big Fish. For he learned: “all he had to do to fit a stereotype also defines what fair play is”. For, after three mostly fucked-up decades, he had a settling: No more tough guy shit. It’s better to be endearing and sincere. To help the underdog without question. As his work is glued to getting musicians and their fans a deeper cut, The Big Fish’s efforts have evolved into the humanity of it all. Episode #71: "Bigger Fish To Fry (Part I)" wsg The Big Fish
Send us Fan MailWelcome to Season 4, Episode 12, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you the Secondhand Talent interview of legendary bouncer, The Big Fish!I want to tell y’all a Little story about The Big Fish… and we’ll tell it as it is - a moshel, as we say in Yiddish - a parable. If someone makes music, that is what they need to be doing. If The Big Fish’s efforts to get them paid what keeps them on stage and not stuck in a job they hate that keeps them from making music, then he will shakedown whomever he has to to make sure the musicians stay on stage doing what they love.Since he doesn’t give a fuck about personal affirmation for doing his job, he’ll save that shit until we talk. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you the Secondhand Talent interview of artist Matt Leunig! Scraped Knee originally was the name of a series of zines and comic books created by founder Matt Leunig and in 2006 eventually became the name of the overall studio. Early on, work consisted mostly of screenprinted gigposters for touring bands and comic books but has since grown into all fields of illustration. His work has appeared in numerous publications, video games, music videos, art galleries, etc..After a transient childhood overseas growing up in the Middle East & Greece, Matt landed in the Bay Area and spent 8 years working in the video game industry while illustrating on the side. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you the Secondhand Talent interview of artist Scotty Radford! Scotty Radford is an artist based in East Tennessee and work as an artist and as a graphic designer. He enjoys traveling, live music, family and friends. Early on, Scotty knew that he would need to use his creativity as a means to support himself, but wasn't sure what the best avenue to achieve that goal was. Eventually, design presented itself as a form of art and communicating that could potentially be paid for and a living made out of. The communication and problem solving aspect of design were very appealing to Scotty, as he went to East Tennessee State University and majored in Art & Design, as well as minoring in Fine Art & Digital Media. After college, Scotty began graphic design and became quite proficient. However, for a traditional artist, the business box was just not going to cut the chut when it comes to creative expression. As with so many people in our industry, covid and 2020 brought with it a whole slew of changes including a rediscovery of love for making rock poster art. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our expansive interview with Scherre Tucker, aka Shady Business. "Scherre is an independent merch slanger, bassist, stagehand, and positive vibes technician. Since 2011, she has been involved with live music in one capacity or another. From playing bass in bands local to her beloved Tulsa, to traveling with national acts as a merch seller, to running large stages at various independent festivals, Shady has made a dedicated effort to keep herself surrounded by what makes her happy: music and the joy it brings. In 2014 she moved to Eureka Springs, AR to assist her mentor, the legendary Ma Dank, with day-to-day tasks. Ma’s legacy continues to be a guiding light in Shady’s work ethic and overall outlook on life. These two share a zest for life that is infectious and rare. Although she passedaway in 2020, Ma travels with Shady to every show she attends.A brief hiatus from music in 2016 saw Scherre protesting for human and water rights at Standing Rock. Never one to sit idly by, she is always on the move, and always working hard to fiercely defend what she believes in; fairness, equality, and joy. After a difficult year of loss, life-changing surgery, and introspection in 2020, Shady resolved herself to make the most of every moment, and pursue her passion of travel and music. Since then, she has worked full time selling merch on the road with many bands. Most of these bandsare in the bluegrass/folk/roots scene (which is not the type of music you'll typically hear in her headphones). She enjoys seeing new parts of the country, meeting new people, and sharing in the joy that the ever-present music brings her and others. Shady is as sweet as they come, but furiously protective of her people, and she will cut you.She is a well-oiled machine that runs on sausage biscuits, menthol cigarettes, and postcard hunting. Has van. Will travel. Available for hire."*The above description was written by Shady's dear friend Jarrod Starling, frontman of Carrie Nation And The Speakeasy out of Wichita, KS. Send us Fan MailWelcome to Season 4, Episode 4, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our expansive interview with David Kozin. David is the founder of no sides records no sides records is a Chicago DIY record label started in 1997. Label CEO David Kozin likes refer to it as a "mini-major" label because the vast array of major bands and artists on the roster, coming from many different genres and also many different parts of the United States and abroad. Early releases from the No Sides record label were from Portland Oregon spazz-punk legends Tuman's Water, Detroit Michigan hooch parlor cabaret duo Terror At The Opera, Chicago nu wave of superband Miss High Hell, and Twig Harbor of experimental electronics duo Nautical Almanac. In 2003, the label released the VGM mixtape "#8" compilation CD, showcasing chiptune and video game music bands and composers from around the world. In 2005, David began full-time studies at Northeastern Illinois University and No Sides records releases started to become more infrequent, less professionally produced, and with many of the regional and national music distributors going out of business in rapid succession at the time, they became much more difficult to obtain outside of Chicago. After years of school, post-grad poverty, near feral insanity, bed bugs, and a book about Ike Turner published in 2018, the label was basically done and what was left was a stone's throw away from the trash heap. Suddenly, sadly, in January 2022 came the tragic announcement of the death of the frontman of Miss High Heel, and, more famously, To Live And Shave In LA, Tom Smith. When he passed away from cancer, it shook the avant-garde music community and shattered the ice within David and No Sides Records was reborn. By the years end, the label put out 14 releases on cassettes and CDs, which is more releases in one year than any of its 5-year period in its prior history. Cut to now and the label will be releasing no less than 18 records in 2024, including albums by: one-man-band performer The Lonesome Organist. Chicago Punk legends Silver Reviews, free-jazz saxophonist Paul Flaherty, classical pianist Charles Joseph Smith and dungeon synth slayer Alkilith. Send us Fan MailWelcome to Season 3, Episode 23 of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of us here at Secondhand Talent - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our expansive interview with legendary Grateful Dead photographer Susana Millman. Around 25 years ago, Susana Millman became a Bay Area photographer. In the spirit of her love for bad puns, she dubbed herself “mamarazi,” although she’s certainly more benign than the paparazzi. Best known for her photography of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead from the mid-1980s on through later incarnations, she’s also spent a significant proportion of her professional life shooting dance (the Mark Morris Dance Group), travel (especially Asian religious architecture), events (the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge) and interiors. Her photographic intention is to capture the essence of a moment and leave a visually evocative memory of the experience. She loves the transcendent moments that occur when she and her camera are in rhythm with the subject, whether it is the peak of a dancer’s elevation, or perhaps feeling the intent of the designer in shooting interiors.Susana spent the better part of the past several years creating and promoting her coffee table-size photography book, Alive with the Dead: A Fly on the Wall with a Camera, which was awarded a medal by the Independent Publishers Association in 2016. The book’s pictures provide an up-close and personal look at the band in its middle age and after, a product of the unusually intimate access to the band’s scene she developed as a friend of Garcia’s — which was why he came to play matchmaker and then walk her down the aisle at her wedding with Dead biographer and publicist Dennis McNally in 1985. She and Dennis live in San Francisco, where they enjoy time spent with their daughter, Season Korchin, her husband Jono, and their grandsons, Julian and Elias. She is involved with a variety of progressive causes and works with two international programs that support literacy, Caravan to Class in Mali, and 100 schools in Myanmar. For more information, visit Susana's website: mamarazi.comRex Foundation: https://rexfoundation.org/GoFundMe for Candace Brightman: https://www.gofundme.com/f/grateful-dead-lighting-designer-candace-brightman__ST Official Website | Listen On Goodpods | Listen On Spotify | Listen On AppleInstagram: @secondhand_talent | Facebook: Secondhand TalentSupport the showWith "Secondhand Talent", we want to devote a platform to taking moments to shine the spotlight on those that manage the spotlights.
